Base metal sulphide mineralisation on the northern end of Great Barrier Island is spatially associated with hypabyssal intermediate to acidic intrusives, in transgressive structures in indurated, complexly deformed greywackes and argillites. Copper predominates in the mineralisation, with minor accompanying lead and zinc and also some gold and silver. However, in some cases lead or zinc may be the dominant constituent. The mineralisation is generally characterised by only narrow envelopes of weak alteration (propyliticassemblages dominated by chlorite and epidote) and with only minor amounts of quartz accompanying the sulphides, which form a cement in zones of hydraulic fracturing. There are two distinct structural settings to the mineralisation: at MinerÆs Head, in a structurally complex situation in a shell-like zone of crackling in hornfelsed greywacke, in association with both north- and east-striking fractures and rubble breccias associated with the apical part of a large intrusive; and in very narrow, but very strike-persistent, 1inear steeply-dipping fracture zones, exposed on the north coast and inland areas near Tataweka.

About twelve months ago, owing to the increasing quantity of stone and dirt being drawn frQm the Victorian State Coal Mine due to the large amount of dead work below ground, cutting, faults, etc, and to the increasing quan#ty of banded coal beingworked, the writer was forced to consider the question of economy in handling the spoil at the surface. The method in operation at the time was to run out level dumps fro,m the, tipping floor of the heapstead, or brace, and to tip most of the skips of stone in tipplers at the ends of the dumps, the remainder of the skips being side-tipped to widen the dumps.The method, whilst quite satisfactory for dealing with a few skips of stone, was found to be costly as the dumps extended, and the number of skips to be dealt with increased from 300. to 400 per day of two shifts;. therefore, in order to expedite thework and cheapen its cost, the writer devised an improved method which may be qescribed as follows :-(1) The stone is tipped into a hopper car which holds about 10 skips(2) The hopper car is hauled up an inclined dump by means of an electric winch.(3) The spoil is dumped from the car forwards or to either side, as required.(4) The car is returned to the starting point for a further load.Plate I Fig. 1 gives an idea of the construction of the hopper car. Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) is an important technology that enables autonomous robots to navigate independently and create detailed, real-time maps of their surroundings. This capability is crucial in underground mining settings, where it enhances operational efficiency and significantly strengthens safety in these subterranean environments. SLAM algorithms typically rely on identifying and using distinct geometric features, such as plane and edge features, to understand the spatial layout of the environment and to track how it evolves as the sensor moves through it. In underground roadways, the scarcity of noticeable edge features, coupled with the repetitive nature of walls and corridors, poses a significant challenge, making it difficult for these systems to distinguish one area from another. Furthermore, the absence of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals in underground adds more challenges, leading to the accumulation of errors in both the mapping and localisation.

During the course of the major research in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne into the creep characteristics of lead and .its dilute alloys, it has been the practice to prepare the majority of test specimens from rolled strip. From time to time during the progress of the work, certain variables involved in. the rolling of the experimental ingots have been investigated. It is proposed to collect together in this paper the results of these experiments. In underground operations, where copper, gold and other metals are mined, the open stopes can be backfilled to stabilise surrounding workings. This fill may consist of tailings from the processing plant, usually mixed in slurry with a binder such as ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Extensive use is made of tailings in OPC-based paste fill, cemented hydraulic fill or cemented aggregate fill applications. A large underground operation such as the Mount Isa Copper Operations utilises over three million tonnes of backfill per annum. Geopolymers offer an alternative binder system with significant environmental advantages over OPC. Geopolymers are formed by polymerisation of aluminosilicate precursors in an alkali medium. They generally form products with superior strength characteristics as well as increased resistance to degradation, particularly under acidic conditions. Geopolymers have lower carbon dioxide emissions associated with their manufacture than OPC and offer further potential advantages, such as the use of less water and more waste materials. The application of geopolymers to weak material systems such as mine backfill has not been widely studied. The aims of this investigation were to assess a range of Australian mine process wastes for suitability as feedstocks in fill applications and to construct a range of these cemented minefills using a geopolymer binder. The physicochemical characteristics of each of the wastes are discussed as well as how they ultimately contribute to the geopolymer cement through direct replacement of OPC. Results from various tests on the candidate geopolymer fill formulations are presented and the potential of such fill formulations to replace OPC in mine backfilling operations is highlighted. The significant potential contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the use of geopolymer-based mine backfill across the industry is noted. Conversion of a single mine, such as the Mount Isa Copper Operations, is shown to match the reductions in greenhouse gas emissions due to the current total installed photovoltaic electricity generation capacity of Australia. A similar examination of wastes available to a gold mine could potentially yield new binders for use in established or new fill systems.

Construction of cave mining systems requires significant capital expenditure and long-term commitment of human, equipment and material resources before production commences. Risks and uncertainties of these large-scale mining projects are significantly higher than for small-scale projects. This is due to the complexity and interactions of the construction schedule components and the large scale and uniqueness of such projects. One way to successfully manage construction uncertainties that would lead to schedule delays is to include a reasonable cost contingency in the budget estimation. A real options approach based on the least-squares Monte Carlo (LSM) method is used to estimate cost contingency associated with schedule uncertainty in mass mining projects. Cost contingency is estimated as the cost of potential project crashing (acceleration) decisions, which pays for not extending the schedule. While such a significant undertaking is expected to be subject to some delays, these can have an enormous impact on the economic value of such projects. The value of the crashing option was explicitly formalised into the process of valuation, as it is assumed to be a single option being considered in the valuation at every decision point prior to the construction completion date. As a part of the proposed method, a stochastic function for the percentage of remaining scope of work for the remaining duration of the entire project was integrated into a framework of numerical simulations. This ensured that this function can implicitly account for sources of schedule uncertainties for projects represented by multiple and overlapping work packages. The LSM method was applied to a real case scenario in an operating block cave mine, with modified scale and features. The results yielded by the LSM method indicated that significant changes in capital budget allocation stem from variation in a contractor’s risk perception and confidence level of estimated delays.CITATION:Ahmed, H M and Dunbar, W S, 2016. It is shown that factors associated with conditions whIch are thermodynamically favourable for the formation of CuS04 in roasting lead to high copper recoveries on leaching. One of these factors is the ratio of the air to solids used for roasting. This can be varied widely without loss of temperature control in the sulphating roasting of many Australian copper concentrates.Thus, the prediction of the air to solids ratio corresponding to a maximum p(SO3) value, for a given concentrate and temperature, is of importance in fluidized bed roasting, since this could be associated with the formation of a maximum quantity of CuS04. Calculations are presented which predict this air to solids ratio, not only for a given concentrate composition, temperature, and pressure, but also for air which is enriched with sulphur dioxide or oxygen.

Recovery of Fine Gold Particles from Philippine Gold Deposits by Enhanced Gravity Concentration and Flotation The objective of the study is to determine the applicability of enhanced gravity concentration (EGC) and flotation for gold recovery. While gravity concentration methods have long been applied to gold ores, especially to free-milling types that requires minimal beneficiation, flotation for gold recovery has not yet taken hold as a major operation in the Philippine setting. In this study, the application of EGC and flotation for gold is applied and compared to the existing methods for gold recovery. Two samples, with assays of 7.315 and 5.333 g Au/MT (samples 1 and 2, respectively) are used for this study. These samples are subjected to mineralogical studies and is found to have a gold-particle size ranging 10 to 200 microns. To verify the separation size, the mesh-of-grind (MOG) is used as the primary parameter for experimentation. Initially, the samples are stage-crushed, ground, and subjected to EGC using a Falcon SB40 Concentrator. Based on the results, the two samples showed that recovery increases with a finer MOG. The ratio of concentration (K) decreases with a finer MOG. This shows that there should be sufficient liberation of the gold values for EGC to be effective. The effect of the enhancement is to pronounce the difference in specific gravity of the minerals, promoting better separation. This is validated by the high recovery values of 86.97 per cent and 98.73 per cent exhibited respectively for samples 1 and 2 (at 54 microns). For the flotation runs, sample 2 with an average particle size of 80 per cent passing 74 microns is examined using thiocarbamate-based collectors for roughing and subsequently exhibited a recovery of 96.32 per cent. At this point, the concentration ratio (K) is noted as an important efficiency indicator for flotation process since it yielded a very low-mass and high-metal content concentrate.

Mine ore, reduced to minus 71/2 in. by primary crushers, is stockpiled. Size reduction of the reclaimed material by secondary and tertiary crushers is achieved in a closed circuit crushing and screening plant. Screen products of minus 30 mm plus 6 mm lump, and minus 6 mm fines are stockpiled by conveyor and stacker systems prior to rail despatch 10 port facilities at Dampier. Crusher settings, determined from experience, are closely maintained to obtain the desired lump/fines ratio. Chemical and sizing analyses from automatically taken samples are used to maintain product specifications. The beneficiation plant upgrades the fines product when this is necessary. The recorded wear life of individual plant components is the basis of a planned maintenance programme.

Gold mineralisation at the Macraes Gold Project is hosted in the Hyde-Macraes shear zone and can be traced for ~30 km along strike, although economic resources are confined to a seven kilometre section in the vicinity of the Macraes  township. The shear zone, which typically dips at a low angle (~20¦) to the NE, is bounded by an upper hanging wall shear and a lower footwall fault. Mineralisation occurs along the hangingwall of the shear zone as well as in low angle concordant shears and stockworks. Ore types include graphitic cataclasites with variable amounts of quartz veining, 'lode schists' and quartz-vein stockworks. Mine geology and grade control activities are designed to ensure accurate definition of ore and waste as well as the accurate prediction of ore grade. Grade control involves an integrated process of blast hole sampling, geological mapping and geostatistical modelling. Geological mapping is carried out post blasting by means of excavating trenches across are zones defined by assay data. Conditional Simulation is used to model raw assay data to define ore-waste contacts and estimate ore block grade, although, geologically defined contacts have precedence. Low angle ore zones impart a wedge shaped geometry to many ore blocks. These ore blocks are bounded by contacts that can be selectively mined to, thereby reducing misallocation of ore and minimising grade dilution.

This paper describes the current and finished design work which has been performed for shallow rock station caverns for New York CityÆs first new subway construction in 60 years. A new robust, sophisticated, design procedure has been developed for two up to 30 m wide caverns, with overburden of less then 12 m, and rock cover to span ratios (C/S) in the order of 0.25. The design is based on empirical input parameters like the Q-value, rock mass rating (RMR) values, rock mass class after Cording (1984), cover to span ratios, which have been validated by the use of structural computer models as well as two- and three-dimensional numerical discontinuum models. The design approach is a staged approach using first principles, empirical models and non-linear FEM and DEM models. In addition, the paper describes the factors and circumstances why shallow caverns have been selected instead of cut-and-cover structures and why all the underground station structures have been developed as drained structures.

Firstly, electric analog models are discus- sed to show fluid streaming conditions. In these models the depth of blast at tuyere level, the height of the bath, the influ- ence of different angles of the furnace zones and the different possibilities of the root of the cohesive zone have been changed. Tests to define the influence at a large blast furnace are given. Secondly, the wear of carbon bricks in the hearth is examined under the influence of gas, slag and pig iron. Oxidation tests in a special scanning microscope with the pos- sibility of heating and gas treatment are shown. Wear mechanisms are discussed fora large blast furnace and proposals for im- provement are given. Finally, the possib- ilities and value of the temperature meas- urement in the hearth block are discussed.

The Palaeoproterozoic Warramunga Formation is notable as the host to the enigmatic, so-called 'Tennant Creek style' mineralisation. These polymetallic (but mainly Au-Cu-Bi) ore deposits typically have a close spatial association with massive ironstone bodies, and frequently also with banded ironstone, known locally as 'haematite shale'. The Warramunga Formation is a polydeformed, turbiditic succession. Partial, or complete Bouma sequences variously comprising lithic arenite, wacke, siltstone, and mudstone constitute a classic flysch sequence deposited as a proximal (sandstone lithofacies) to distal (siltstone lithofacies) fan association. The Warramunga Formation has a substantial component of volcanic detritus and has generally been attributed to an essentially contemporaneous volcanic provenance. However, lithostratigraphic revision (Donnellan, Hussey and Morrison, in press) apparently precludes outcropping volcanic rocks of the Tennant Creek Block, or indeed Inlier, as the source of detritus. Warramunga Formation geochemistry indicates rapid derivation from a fractionated, predominately felsic igneous source (Palaeoproterozoic upper crust) with a minimum of chemical weathering; together with an admixture of mafic material. Warramunga Formation geochemistry cannot, however, be reconciled with that of the Bemborough Formation, which is here taken to be representative of Flynn Subgroup felsic volcanic rocks. Similarly, the Warramunga Formation is geochemically distinct from Flynn Subgroup sedimentary rocks. Geochemistry of the banded ironstone is consistent with its interpretation as Dine-grained turbidites.

The purpose of this paper is to outline the basic policy problems for good community relations programmes in the resource extraction industries of Papua New Guinea. The main focus of the paper will be on defining and analysing those problems which lie on the landowner side and which are still not widely understood within the resource extraction industries despite several decades of turbulent experience. Many of the companies operating in the resource extraction industries of mining and petroleum and gas have in recent decades adopted, by choice or necessity, 'good corporate citizen' policies. Some of these companies now pursue ethical business, environmental and community relations policies. Some have adequately funded and well-trained staff in their community relations departments. Although different industry sites scattered over Papua New Guinea show significant differences in their experience of social conflict, I argue here that a good deal of this variation has less to do with the differences between the companies' public relations policies and their effectiveness and more to do with the conflict causing features of indigenous society. Experience suggests that even a company well-equipped with good intentions, good policies and good staff may experience serious difficulties in maintaining good community relations in Papua New Guinea. Many of these difficulties, I argue, can be traced to causes that lie, essentially, within the structure of Papua New Guinean communities and in the customs and social relations of Papua New Guinean peoples. Accordingly the attention of this paper is focussed on the conflict causing aspects of Papua New Guinean society. It is true, to the point of being a cliche, that Papua New Guinean societies are oriented very strongly towards achieving consensus and social harmony. In this regard Papua New Guinean communities differ significantly from, say, Australian communities. My purpose here is not to denigrate this aspect of Papua New Guinean societies but, rather, to point out that the drive for consensus is driven by the desire to avoid its opposite, dissensus. This paper sets out to define the dissensual aspects of Papua New Guinean societies and my special interest is in those conflict producing aspects of Papua New Guinean societies that are most resistant to the mechanisms that are designed to create social harmony. A survey of the recent history of industry and community relations in Papua New Guinea indicates that there are three main factors present on the landowner side which are liable, separately or through their interaction, to cause difficulties. These factors are respectively generational challenge, social boundaries and custom variability and I shall discuss each of these in turn.

Tailings dam failures continue to occur worldwide at an unacceptable rate, averaging two events annually over the last 100 years. Furthermore, tailings dams continue to grow in size, increasing the potential release of tailings and water should they fail. Tailings are generally deposited in a slurry state, with the potential to flow if containment is lost. Understanding the generation and propagation of excess pore water pressure on failure is critical to predicting the flow and run-out of tailings. This paper presents numerical modelling using the material point method indicating that tailings run-out processes may be self-enhanced by the excess pore water pressure induced during the collapse of the containment. On the more important mines it is almost essential to have a general plan of the surface. A special feature of this plan should be the indication thereon of a suitable arrangement of contour lines, either wholly over the surface of the property or at parts where may seem most useful. The importance of having these contours marked on the plan will be best appreciated by the engineer, in selecting the best available site for a proposed new plant, in locating a tramway, in connecting the surface with the underground workings to the best advantage, or in solving many similar problems that come within his province. The closer the contours are together vertically the better, the limitation being the trouble and expense of getting them on to the plan. They may range from five to fifty feet apart but a distance of ten feet will be found, in most cases, to be the most useful.In deciding the datum level from which these contours are to be measured, it is best to depart from the ordinary sea level datum, and use instead the highest available point on the property. This datum will be called zero and all levels will be reckoned so many feet below it; thus by a contour marked 160 on the plan, it will be understood that the level of the plane of the contour is 160 feet below the highest available point on the property. This system of measuring levels downward is readily suggested from measuring the depths of shafts from the brace or of excavations from the original surface.

At Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. a number of attempts were made to remove water soluble copper and iron salts from calcined pyritic concentrates but variou~ problems arose and the methods were abandoned.A method of rapid washing has been developed and although some problems still exist a workable process was established which resulted in substantial savings of reagents used for the cyanidation of calcine.INTRODUCTIONIn the Great Boulder flowsheet crude ore is ground in cyanide solution, then thickened, agitated and subjected to two stage filtering. Secondary filter discharge is pulped with flotation circuit water, gassed with sulphur dioxide to precipitate soluble gold and activate pyrite, and after the addition of copper sulphate and xanthate, the pyrite and tellurides are recovered by flotation. Flotation tailings are thickened and pumped to the disposal area and concentrates are calcined in Edwards roasters. Calcine is washed to remove water soluble copper and iron salts and the washings pumped to the flotation section where the copper is used as an activator. The washed calcine is cyanided and returned to the crude ore circuit via the thickeners. Solution for precipitation in the Merrill Crowe is drawn from the crude ore thickeners.Prior to the introduction of calcine washing the calcine contained 7 lb/ton copper of which approximately 60 per cent was water soluble. A commonplace, sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, article of everyday existence is the tin can. Produced from thin gauge low carbon steel, and commonly coated with a mere 60 millionths of an inch of pure tin, the product is however strong and corrosion resistant. Tin-plate serves a myriad of purposes-the most important being to meet the requirements of the canning industry. Australia's newest steel product, tin-plate, was first produced on a commercial scale during the early part of August, 1957. The commissioning of the Hot Dip Tinning Plant (Fig. 1) of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. at Port Kembla, marked the culmination of a proposal dating back to 1939, the advent of World War II having caused its deferment to the present time.Cornish tin is known to have been exported as early as 300 B.C. to Syria and tinned vessels existed even in the year A.D. 23. The tin coating of plate could be described as an ancient art, believed to have had its origin in Bohemia in the thirteenth century. During the next 450 years, the process spread through Saxony to Pontypool in Monmouthshire, but it was a further half century before any measure of success was obtained.Perhaps the two greatest milestones in tin-plate manufacture were the rolling of iron plates first carried out in 1728, thereby outmoding the hammer formed sheet, and more recently, the development of the electro-deposition process.
