In designing for a highly productive new mine during the present declining coal market, a very detailed ò planning is necessary. Attitudes of both management and coal operators may have to be changed, with more initial participation by the unions, governmental agencies, and the coal owners. A considerable number of Australian mines are remote from labour source and this trend is likely to increase particularly in the state of Queensland. Consequently such 'mines must be developed on the basis of the future technological and social changes in order to minimise both the capital and operating costs.

The Big Bend and Cobra molybdenum prospects which occur near the margin of the Karamea Batholith in the Northwest Nelson molybdenum province are compared. The Big Bend Prospect is a 3000 m by 800 m area of disseminated pyrite and anomalous molybdenum associated with Cretaceous porphyry intrusives and later argillic and potassic alteration within Ordovician schists and phyllites adjacent to the batholith margin. The Cobra Prospect is a 1200 m by 1200 m area of weakly disseminated pyrite mineralisation and anomalous molybdenum-in-rock associated with moderate to strong quartz-molybdenite and quartz-orthoclase-molybdenite veining in quartzite.

The paper discusses the state of the progress reached in the development of the diamond wire tool for cutting hard rocks. To the advances of this relatively new technology a substantial contribution has been provided by the research being carried out at the University of Cagliari on samples of granite rocks from different Sardinian stone quarries. On the basis of field experiments and laboratory test data, the mechanism of diamond wire cutting has been assessed. In particular the influence of the rock features and operational variables on tool performance (cutting rate and bead wear) has been Elucidated.

Subsidence data resulting from longwall mining in the northern part of the Newcastle Coalfield of New South Wales has been reviewed. Themain factors influencing subsidence variability in this area (apart from width/height ratio) are strong bridging strata, the effects of the first major goaf fall, mining direction and depth of cover. In 1987 the NSW Department of Mineral Resources produced a guide to subsidence prediction for the Newcastle Coalfield which is still widely used. The current study shows this guide to be no longer appropriate for this area. An alternative prediction curve, incorporating more recent data, is suggested.

A highly effective binder for iron ore pellet making is obtainable from bituminous materials produced in the high temperature cracking of crude oils. A sample of crude copper powder produced by the CLEAR Process was refined by dissolution and recovery in sulfate media using the Parker Process. The Parker Process offers an alternative method of copper recovery to electrorefining and allows a range of Eh and pH conditions to be used to provide further discrimination of impurities. High purity copper powder was recovered by the Parker Process even in the presence of added impurities when the Eh and pH was maintained near constant throughout the refining step.

A methodology for modelling dense medium cyclones is presented for cyclones operating under conditions which avoid particle interference or apex crowding. Particle interference and apex crowding are shown to result in less efficient separations and represent undesirable regimes of dense medium cyclone operation. In order to avoid apex crowding, suitable medium to ore ratios and apex diameters should be used. Cyclone density differentials should be kept below approximately 400kg.m 3 to limit loss of efficiency due to excessive particle recirculation within the cyclone. The relationship between size-by-size partition curves shows that the flow split and density of the medium within a cyclone can be related to two new parameters, the pivot partition number and pivot density. The parameters are common to each partition curve in any set of size-by-size data and are mathematically related to the familiar performance characteristics, ecart probable (Ep) and separation density. The resulting expression confirms that the Ep and separation density are directly related.

At the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in 1927, the Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions was formed and it was proposed that the Council take steps to prepare a "Review of the Mineral Resources and Industries of the Empire." At the third congress in 1930, it was resolved that the proposal to institute the review should be submitted to the Imperial Conference held in 1930. This was done, and the Minerals Committee, of the Imperial Economic Committee compiled, an interimreport which was based on statistics of imports and exports, and did not consider resources and consumption.In 1942 the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, wrote to the Empire Council and stated that it was desirable that the Council should be in a position to take part in decisions affecting the future of the mining and metallurgical industries. The Council communicated with the constituent Institutions regarding the nominations of two members then in England. Subsequently the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical ,Institute of India prepared a review of the mineral resources and industries of India and their post-war development, and the Empire Council forwarded a copy to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and asked if that Institute would submit a review on simjIar lines for Australia. An investigation was carried out at a US underground mine to characterise diesel aerosols and to asses the effects of various control technologies on the concentrations and properties of particulate matter and gases emitted by heavy-duty diesel-powered equipment. This study was dedicated to evaluating the impact on mine air quality of contemporary diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems installed on mining equipment. Additional efforts were made to assess the effect of blended biodiesel fuels, yellow grease and soy, ultra-low sulfur fuel, a fuel emulsion and of selected diesel oxidation catalysts on air quality and emissions. The carbon analysis performed on the collected samples showed that the tested DPF systems reduced the mass concentrations of elemental carbon in mine air by between 70 per cent and 92 per cent. In addition, TEOM measurements, collected during these tests, showed that the total diesel particulate matter concentration in the mine air was reduced by greater than 65 per cent when DPF systems were used. The tested biodiesel blends were found to reduce elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by between 49 per cent and 33 per cent, for the B20 (20 per cent biodiesel/80 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease respectively and between 66 per cent and 56 per cent for the B50 (50 per cent biodiesel/50 per cent #2 diesel) of soy and yellow grease, respectively. The water-in-diesel fuel emulsion was shown to reduce elemental carbon concentrations by as much as 85 per cent. NO2 measurements showed an increase in the maximum concentrations of NO2 when catalysed DPF systems were used instead of mufflers.

The combination of new tools with a more rigorous approach to understanding the interaction of mill liners with overall mill performance and economics, forms the basis of an integrated approach to liner management. Based on accurate liner wear measurements, some (limited) physical mill inspections and surveys, accurate calibration of the mill load and analysis of process data, a whole new approach to liner selection, relining intervals and mill control is proposed. Collection and analysis of this information in operating mills illustrates the mill performance improvement which can be attained through this careful measurement and modelling approach.A more holistic approach to liner management is proposed, including a broadening of the current work to cover the potential benefits of improved relining technologies and predictive liner wear modelling. Those involved in managing risk today are asking various questions: why is it so frustrating to discuss æriskÆ with communities? why do consultative processes around æriskÆ get more and more complex? where is all this going to end? These questions will be addressed by examining how our understanding of risk has changed from one based on biophysical hazard to a broader view that includes social and cultural factors. There is evidence to suggest that we are living in a ærisk societyÆ, where the goal of æsafetyÆ has replaced that of equality in a class based society. The global mining industry operates within this complex and politicised environment. The very meaning of ædevelopmentÆ has broadened from the narrow economic vision to include the social and environmental factors which make up æSustainable DevelopmentÆ. Corporate accountability now extends beyond traditional shareholders to wide groups of stakeholders. The mining industry is developing responses which look beyond traditional technocratic methods. At the industry level these responses have included the recent Mining Minerals and Sustainable Development global and regional reports It has proven challenging and difficult to operationalise these new understandings at the company level and it is time to look at the bigger picture.

A BRIEF account of the water-power potentialities of Tasmania is given, together with possible applications of the power commercially. A short history of the Waddamana development is then given, and the main works are described.WATER POWER POTENTIALITIESTasmania is an island of approximately 24,500 sq. miles area (exclusive of small islands). An area of 12,000 sq. miles is at an elevation of over 1000 ft. above sea-level, and of 2300 sq. miles at over 3000 ft. above sea-level. Average annual rainfall varies from' over 140 in. on West Coast to 20 in. on East Coast, and for the whole island averages 48.5 in. The total water-power available, based on conservative figures for run off and efficiency, is 6,000,000 b.h.p. Only a small percentage of this total will, under present conditions, and under likely conditions in the immediate future, be capable of being developed commercially.An extensive hydro-metric and water-power survey is at present being carried out in order to collect information concerning the most promising water-power schemes. Already 400,000 b.h.p. has been located in different proposals, and there is still a large area of very likely country along the West Coast which has not been investigated yet. Tasmania thus has very vast power potentialities, which, combined with good ports and communications and wonderful mineral and timber resources, should augur well for the establishment of the great key industries, particularly chemical and metallurgical.

To assist in the evaluation of different haulage systems, a truck haulage simulation model has been developed at BHP Melbourne Research Laboratories. Experimentally determined and theoretically explained phenomenon of zonal disintegration of rock around the development working brings about the radical changes in existing ideas about the mechanism of interaction rock massive with engineering constructions.The essence of the phenomenon consists in the fact, that forming of non-elastic deformations zone goes on by way of more intensive deformation and destruction of rock simultaneously in several zones, covering partially or fully output circuit and divided by zones of destructed rock. Under the influence of change of massive strained-deformational condition of depositional rock an accidental deviation of zones of supplementary expansion and compression of rock from the previous positions take place. One can observe multiplicational change of the outline, size and form of all disintegration zones in the time within the area of the working influence at massive. This phenomenon was named "fluctuation of zonal disintegration of sedimentary rock around development working".

The use of black and white and colour infrared film in remote sensing of natural resources, is reviewed. In heavily-forested areas such as New Zealand, the main value of the method is in surveying the vegetation cover to detect the existence of plant communities characteristic of specific geological formations, By contrast, in and areas of Australia where the vegetation cover is sparse and where rocks and soils are well exposed, the method can be used in detecting different rock types or other geological differences.

Regolith, the blanket of bedrock weathering products and surficial sediments, covers almost all of the landsurface. In Australia extensive areas are covered by regolith up to several hundred metres thick which is relatively old (extending back to the Mesozoic or possibly earlier) and largely complex. As such, it is poorly understood and is presently regarded as a significant hindrance to resources exploration. The regolith: obscures bedrock lithology and structure blankets ore deposits in the bedrock hosts surficial mineral deposits ranging from placers (gold, diamonds, platinum, mineral sands ....) to chemical precipitates (uranium, opal, gold, bauxite....). contains important groundwater resources. The application of surface exploration techniques without recognition or understanding of the regolith could result in wasteful expenditure. The understanding of the distribution and characteristics of the regolith in the context of its evolution and geomorphic history and its relationship to underlying bedrock will promote development of suitable geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing techniques. It also will assist exploration industry with the interpretion of data from: geological mapping soil geochemical surveys stream sediment geochemical surveys airborne remote sensing airborne radiometric surveys other airborne geophysical surveys some ground geophysical surveys shallow drilling and so improve mineral exploration Strategies.

Unplanned dilution directly adds cost to production from mining, milling, tailings disposal and administration. Additionally, unplanned dilution decreases the productivity, profitability and may affect the planned life of mine. Identifying and quantifying the potential for unplanned dilution allows optimisation of the mining plan and mining practices to minimise the adverse impact on productivity and the cost of production. The Dilution Rating System (DRS) has been developed to more accurately predict dilution thickness and the variable potential for dilution, from individual stopes to life of mine planning. The DRS utilises the methodology developed for the Mining Rock Mass Model (Seymour et al 2007, Jenkins et al 2009) to generate a three-dimensional dilution rating model, which is then calibrated against stoping performance. Dilution can be predicted more accurately and the parameters affecting dilution can be determined and minimised through improved mining techniques, for example blasting and ground support design. Potential high dilution areas can be identified in the planning stages of the mine and systems put in place to mitigate the risk of excessive dilution. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the DRS and then successfully predict dilution for both the hangingwall and footwall of stopes at the Gara Gold Mine. This has enabled the expected dilution to be more accurately predicted and mitigated where possible thus reducing unplanned dilution.

Mt. Whaleback is in the Pilbara region of Western Australia approximately 1200 kilometers north of Perth, the State capital. In this deposit the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers are mining ore reserves totalling 1500 million tonnes of high grade hematite averaging 64.0% Fe. In addition to Mt. Whaleback, 38 ore bodies have so far been identified outside Mt. Whaleback on the Company's remaining 75,000 hectares of lease area. These ore bodies contain major tonnages of iron ore. Extraction at present is planned at a rate of 37 million tonnes per annum at an ore-to-waste ratio of approximately 1 to 1.4. The ore is railed north to Port Hedland on the Indian Ocean where the different products are screened, crushed and blended prior to shipping. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with the facilities installed in the Mt. Newman operation to form a background to the sampling techniques employed, describe the precisions which were achieved in experiments conducted February through June, 1976 and also to assess the degree of blending which takes place during the various processes and to put a quantitative measure to the degree of blending.
