The Miitel nickel sulfide deposit has been overprinted by a family of late stage structures that have acted as conduits for fluids that have contaminated the orebody with arsenic minerals. This has resulted in highly variable and unpredictable arsenic grades throughout the Miitel orebody. The ore produced from Miitel is processed under a toll-treatment agreement with Western Mining Resources Kambalda Nickel Concentrator. Part of this arrangement includes a financial penalty if monthly average arsenic grades in ore delivered exceed 800 ppm. This constraint has provided an extra challenge to the Miitel mine geologist in addition to daily underground duties. Routine development and stope mapping, close spaced sampling and cross-sectional interpretation were used in building an understanding of the structural controls of arsenic mineralisation and ore repetition at the Miitel nickel mine, and in providing maximum input to mine planning and scheduling. The distribution of structures responsible for arsenic introduction is now well understood from detailed mapping, sampling, and interpretation. By applying these insights to mine scheduling, the operation has successfully managed arsenic levels within the required specifications. Geological mapping has also improved the understanding of the structural complexity of the ore deposit, leading to the addition of ore tonnes and an increased confidence in resource modelling. Regular sampling and tight controls on data quality provided confidence in a strongly skewed arsenic data set. Multiple Indicator Kriging has been used for resource estimation of the arsenic contaminated nickel ore since it allows explicit control of the spatial influence of extreme grades in the positively skewed arsenic sample population. Both the grade control and exploration data sets are used to model the arsenic distribution.

In China the hydrogeological type of solid mineral deposits can be divided into A. Mineral deposits with fissure water; B. Mineral deposits with pore water; and C. Mineral deposits with karst water. The hydrogeological conditions of mineral deposits with fissure water are relatively simple with the exception of a few cases. Mineral deposits with pore water are few but great amounts of ground water can be encountered in the mine accompanied by floating sand or slope failure during the exploitation. Mineral deposits with karst water are complex in their hydrogeological conditions. Enormous inrushes occur frequently in the mines of north China; Karst collapses are a serious matter in the mines of the south; Subterranean river and conduit systems are often encountered in the southwest. This paper will give full discussion on these features and put forward a way of combating and controlling the groundwater problem in accordance with type and feature.

A reconstructed landscape may exert long-term influences on its surrounds and behave in ways that may not be predictable given uncertainties regarding climate, soil and vegetation interactions (Evans, 2000). In recent years, computer-based landscape evolution models (LEM) have been used to assess potential and existing mining landscapes and their long-term geomorphic behaviour (Hancock et al, 2007; Hancock, Lowry and Coulthard, 2015; Tucker and Hancock, 2010).In this paper, we focus on the evolution of post-mining landforms, which are designed to include burial or encapsulation of mine-impacted areas and materials, including tailings, drains, spoil tips and other industrial architecture (Figure 1). At the Ranger Uranium mine in the Northern Territory of Australia, low-grade uranium ore, tailings, brines and other mine wastes will be buried at depth in the areas of the former pits and tailings storage facilities.The use of LEMs to predict long-term landscape evolution has several issues. These include that model predictions are based on the calibration and parameterisation of the model carried out using values determined from present day, or recent surface conditions. Furthermore, there is also the question as to how subtle perturbations or roughness on the DEM surface can produce alternative model results by randomly varying the elevations of the DEM surface.In this study we examine the effect on sediment transport rates and geomorphology for a proposed rehabilitated landform using multiple landscape realisations with increasing magnitudes of random changes in the DEM using the SIBERIA LEM (Willgoose, Bras and Rodriguez-Iturbe, 1991).CITATION:Hancock, G R, Coulthard, T J and Lowry, J B C, 2016. The operation of quarries for the production of crushed stone and aggregates, depends heavily on rock blasting efficiency, which usually represents a major share of total production costs. After investigating the causes of this situation, a series of technical aspects have been detected, and they are described for the purpose of contributing to the minimization of costs, which also reduces the effects of blasting on the environment. Utilization of empirical design methods, of inadequate explosive types, and of erroneous drilling pauems with respect to rock properties, are the main factors to be corrected, as a consequence of poor engineering criteria, with scarce use of computational methods and field instrumentation. Several concepts of blasting optimization are pointed out, and their application to industrial operations in a Portuguese limestone quarry indicated clear trends for the reduction of production costs, as well as some of the deleterious consequences of blasting on the environment.

The paper discusses how automation is steadily proceeding throughout all areas of the electrolytic zinc industry. Fluid bed roasters with integral sulphuric acid plants are now on -computer control. Highly efficient, continuous leaching and purification stages, with feed-forward predictive and optimisation computer control, precede electrolytic cells with on-stream solution analysers and automatic stripping of deposited zinc. Controlled electric induction furnaces feed continuous casting lines, equipped with automatic stacking and strapping, machines, after computer based metal analysis has confirmed metal purity or alloy composition. The paper also discusses the use of computer models tied to process control systems, and the equipment and solution measurements that could be automated with advantage, using modern micro-based controllers and analysers.

A thermodynamic model of the copper Peirce-Smith (P-S) converter has been developed to predict the behaviour of magnetite in the converter slag, the amounts of slag and matte, the compositions of slag and matte, the volume of the bath, the bath temperature and the SEMTECH OPC signals. The predictions of bath temperature, slag and matte compositions and magnetite content in the slag have been validated by the industrial data. The effects of fluxing strategy, returns and skim charges, oxygen enrichment and temperature on the magnetite formation in the slag have been predicted and discussed. Some industrial applications of this model have been presented.

Computer modelling is being used to simulate rock fracture, caving and stress redistribution about longwall panels with increasing confidence. The models are being assessed against field monitoring and have significantly increased the understanding of caving mechanics within the overburden. This paper discusses the modelling approach and provides some examples of its application to overburden damage and induced hydraulic conductivity. Computer models used in this study simulate the fracture process in the geological units throughout the overburden. Analysis of the mining induced fracture patterns and in situ joint patterns allows an estimation of the hydraulic conductivity within the overburden. The cubic flow relationship has been used in the examples presented.

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry has always been considered to be a comparative method of analysis. Reference materials are required to calibrate the analytical system. This paper describes the use of a set of æsyntheticÆ oxide standards, made from commercially available high purity compounds, to calibrate a spectrometer for 21 major and minor oxides. The spectrometer software uses simple methods of background correction, and a fundamental parameter method of matrix correction. Sample preparation is by fusion in 66 per cent lithium tetraborate, 34 per cent lithium metaborate. The use of synthetic standards, made from traceable compounds, brings XRF significantly closer to being a primary rather than a comparative method. Reference materials were used to validate the method described and examples of accuracy for major constituents are given using ores and other minerals. This method has successfully been used to analyse a wide variety of minerals and ores, as validation data shows. A titanium process example clearly shows the benefits of highest accuracy analysis.

The arid and semi-arid region of Western Australia occupies about two-thirds of the State equivalent to an area of about 1.8 million sqkm. Groundwater demand in this area has historically been linked to the pastoral andmining industries commencing with the gold discoveries in the Eastern Goldfields some 100 years ago. Substantial increases in demand have occurred in the past two decades initially as a result of nickel discoveriesin the early 1970's and more recently the rapid resurgence of the gold mining industry. Mineral exploration and development in the Great Sandy Desert at Telfer (gold) and Kintyre (uranium) and in the Great Victoria Desert at MulgaRocks (uranium) has also been accompanied by detailed groundwater investigations.

There are no manuals or handbooks for budding mill superintendents or process plant managers. Most who obtain this level of responsibility have gained their training from watching the good and bad of their predecessors and the successful ones have themselves graduated from the school of hard knocks. This paper attempts to provide some helpful guidelines and direction for those who aspire to better manage a mineral processing facility. The authors have 20 years combined experience in senior management roles at nine different mineral processing operations in Australia and overseas, covering gold, base metals and mineral sands. This summary of tips and pitfalls will hopefully benefit future leaders in mineral processing and metallurgy.

"Resurrected from its former life at the Big Bell operation, the grinding circuit at Evolution Mining’s Edna May operation in Western Australia has many a story to tell. The task of optimising a plant designed for another orebody provides as many challenges as opportunities. Initially faced with a blend of primary and oxide ore, the circuit achieved in excess of 320 t/h until the oxide was depleted, leaving only the much harder primary feed.The 2.0 MW semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill and 3.7 MW ball mill were assisted by a 150 kW pebble crusher, but the power limitation of the SAG mill resulted in a drop in throughput. Edna May personnel have been involved in a number of progressive improvements to restore the design capacity of the concentrator and work towards 3 Mt/a or even higher ahead of the gravity and leach recovery circuits.These improvements include: a crush forward configuration of the SAG mill scats partial to full secondary crushing variable speed drive upgrade of the SAG mill lifter and grate design changes ball mill circuit grinding efficiency.This paper summarises the chronology of events that has resulted in significant improvements in throughput by conventional (and in some cases, novel) methods of reconfiguring the existing grinding mills. "Best practice for acid rock drainage (ARD) risk assessment still relies solely on the geochemical properties of sulfidic rocks and mineral processing products, despite the fact that a rockÆs tendency to produce acid also depends on mineralogy and texture. Consequently, there are a plethora of geochemical tests routinely utilised by the mining industry to predict ARD formation. Due to limitations associated with these tests and their relatively high costs, analysis of recommended best practice sample numbers is rarely achieved, reducing the accuracy of waste management plans. Our research addressed this through examining the application of geometallurgical data for predicting acid formation, and led to the identification of potential environmental geometallurgy indicators.Samples obtained from an iron-oxide copper gold deposit were subjected to the geochemistry-mineralogy-texture (GMT) approach, an improved methodology for classifying acid forming potential. GMT results were compared against geometallurgical and assay data sets to evaluate: relative carbonate content measurements (measured by HyLogger) and identify how these could be used to calculate effective acid neutralising capacity mineral hardness (measured by EQUOtip) to determine application of this data for calculating lag-time to acid formation opportunities to automate the acid rock drainage index (ARDI) using classified images produced by a GEOTEK logger and automated microscopy.Links between the GMT approach and geometallurgical data sets were identified. Classified mineralogy data has application at stage one, HyLogger and EQUOtip at stage two and computer-based ARDI evaluations of classified images at stage three. Through such integration, ARD characterisation costs can be reduced, with value added to geometallurgical data sets. Furthermore, deposit-wide ARD domaining is possible, and acquisition of total-orebody knowledge more likely. Short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral reflectance of the hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks in the footwall of the Hellyer Zn-Pb massive sulfide deposit was measured with a portable PIMATM infrared spectrometer. The Al-OH absorption band was used to derive information on the cation composition of white mica. The wavelength range of the Al-OH band from 2194 nm to 2222 nm reflects variation in the number of octahedral Al (Alvi) in white mica from 3.9 to 3.2 (based on four octahedral cations per formula). This Alvi range indicates a substantial compositional variation, covering most of the compositional region between muscovite (Alvi = 4.0) and phengite (Alvi = 3.0). Moreover, the spectral reflectance data show that the compositional variations of white mica are spatially related to the hydrothermal alteration zoning, such that the white mica of more phengitic composition tends to form in the main upflow fluid channels in the centre of the footwall alteration system. The results suggest that the octahedral Al content of white mica, which is spectrally definable by the wavelength of the Al-OH band using a field instrument such as the PIMATM, can be used to map fossil hydrothermal systems and potentially as vectors to mineralisation.

Quality control (QC) of reverse circulation drill sampling commonly involves regular duplicate subsampling to monitor the extent of imprecision or random error in the subsampling system. A series of laboratory flotation tests were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of various depressants as arsenic (and zinc) depressants in the lead cleaner stage of the NBHC mill at Broken Hill. The depressants used included potassium cyanide, ferrous sulphate, sodium hypochlorite, potassium ferricyanide and two Cyanamid commerical depressants, Aerodepressants 610 and 633. A standard roughing stage was completed before the addition of the reagents in the cleaning stage. All reagents tested produced significant arsenic depression, with the best results being obtained with the addition of potassium cyanide and sodium hypochlorite. Some of the depressants activated the zinc in the process of arsenic depression. The best result was obtained with the addition of 90 g/t potassium cyanide at a pH of 10 when arsenic recovery was only 1/4 that of the value obtained for the standard test.

"Copper-ammonia-thiosulfate?leaching of gold has been researched for several decades as a potential alternative to cyanidation. However, this technology has not yet been applied commercially due to many challenges such as complex solution chemistry, reagent degradation and losses, system instability with losses of precious metals and difficulties in gold recovery from the leachate. Progress has been made at CSIRO in tackling some of these challenges including:better understanding and control of the leach conditions to minimise reagent losses whilst maximising gold recovery use of strong base ion exchange resins to recover the gold strategies to deal with polythionates that adsorb competitively with gold on ion exchange resins development and evaluation of process flow sheets.As a result there has been increased interest from the gold industry and renewed activities to develop thiosulfate based processes for gold recovery. One application area, which has been developed to the point of piloting, is the treatment of gravity gold concentrates using a copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leach with ion exchange recovery of the gold thiosulfate. Asa consequence they constitute the preferred habitats, of, petroleum.The Gambier ,sub-basin forms part of the southern Australian-continental terrace where it opposes the (3000 fathom), Jeffrey deep. The'purpose of'this paper is to discuss its nature, structure,_ and developmental history in re-lation to its oil prospects.

Severe development difficulties were experienced soon after in-seam mining commenced at Appin Colliery in'1962. Thirteen years later no significant pro- gress had been made in overcoming some aspects of this development problem. Some success had been achieved in destressing roadways both in development and pillar extraction. Longwall retreat mining had shown promise of being highly productive but at an extremely high cost in terms of development requirements both in number of roadways and intensity of support in those roadways. No real advance was made in the problem of driving the first heading of a group of headings under conditions of apparently high stress in directions other than the preferred mining directions, although failure of the roof in this heading did seem to give easier work in the subsequent headings driven particularly if they were driven on narrow centres.
