Since the early days of flotation, process technicians have known that the speed at which the froth is recovered over the lip of the cell has a very direct and consistent influence on the grade and recovery of the circuit. No plant would deny that, even to this day, one of the most important aspects of a process technicianÆs job is ensuring that the froth is moving at a desired and controlled speed over the lip. Unfortunately, process technicians cannot watch the froth throughout the entire shift, as there are always other problems to attend to. A considerable amount of work has thus been done to develop a æsystemÆ that automatically measures the speed of the froth. This measurement would then be used in simple controllers to emulate the steps taken by the process technician in correcting deviations of the froth speed from its desired level. Many of the earlier attempts to measure speed were ineffective, as they were unable to cope with turbulence on the froth surface. The FrothMasterÖ instrument makes use of machine vision technologies to measure the speed of the froth over the lip of a cell at a very high sampling rate. This instrument produces an extremely reliable and accurate measurement of the froth speed (as well as other parameters such as bubble size and froth stability). As we will show, the effectiveness of the speed measurement in controlling the performance of the plant is a testimony to its reliability. Three FrothMasterÖ units have recently been installed on the Cadia Hills Gold Mine in New South Wales (Australia). The objectives of this installation were:to control the mass-recovery of two Tank Cells in series on the same level where differences in the hydrostatic head between the two cells result in the cells pulling inconsistently with respect to each other; control of the concentrate grade (per cent copper) from the first rougher; reduction in the frother consumption in the rougher circuit by monitoring the froth speed. A simple controller was designed to react to disturbances in the same way that human operators react. This was done after consultation with the metallurgists and the process technicians at Cadia. The controller had two functions: Stabilisation: The stabilising controller made use of three manipulated variables (level, frother addition rate and aeration rate) to control the froth speed to a setpoint. Optimisation: The optimising controller adjusted the froth speed setpoint based on deviations of the grade (measured in real-time by the OSA) from a setpoint. The plant metallurgist adjusted the grade setpoint based on information about the ore. The results from a 21-day trial have shown the following:The ratio of concentrate mass-recovery between two cells in series on the same level has been successfully balanced, thereby overcoming problems due to differences in hydrostatic heads. It is possible to control the speed of the froth, in mm/s, to within five per cent of its setpoint using the aforementioned manipulated variables. It has also been shown that, for reliable control, it is necessary to control more than just one variable (eg level or air). The grade of the first rougher concentrate has been controlled to within 0.3 per cent of the grade setpoint for long periods of time, which has important implications for the circuit recovery. The frother consumption has been reduced significantly. This paper will thus show that substantial progress has been made to demonstrate the value of using on-line froth speed measurements in flotation plant control to obtain real financial benefits.

Gretley Colliery is situated at Wallsend, a suburb of Newcastle in New South Wales and is owned and operated by the Newcastle Wallsend Coal Ccnpany, a wholly owned subsidiary of Peko Wallsend Limited. The mine has been an efficient bord and pillar producer by industry standards. However, its continued economic viability was threatened because the bulk of remaining reserves lie in more difficult mining conditions and are of poorer quality. Alternatives were examined to improve productivity and allow Gretley to become more competitive in the current difficult market Environment.

Tailings management is typically constrained by many factors that are taken as given. These include the tailings production rate that must be accommodated, the desire to deliver the tailings cheaply and easily as a slurry using centrifugal pumps, and a tailings footprint limited by the desire to minimise capital costs leading to a rapid tailings rate of rise and a low settled density. Other constraints include wall raises being delayed due to limited capital, inadequate tailings water and rainfall run-off management, and the net present value (NPV) approach to capital expenditure that puts off expenditure at the expense of performance. All of these constraints result in the tailings occupying much more volume than is necessary, being difficult to rehabilitate, and not being capable of supporting a beneficial post-mining land use or function. Ultimately, such constrained tailings storage facilities will assume very large dimensions, but each will typically be developed as a series of smaller storages that are filled rapidly and added to progressively. The optimal stage to efficiently recover process water is in the process plant, but this is limited by the desire to use centrifugal pumps rather than the more costly positive displacement pumps, which also require greater management of tailings deposition. Process water can also be recovered from the tailings storage facility (TSF) decant. Tailings water that is not recovered from the plant or the decant will be lost to entrainment within the tailings, seepage to the foundation or through the wall, or evaporation. However, tailings water is not always suitable for reuse in the plant, particularly when it becomes contaminated by the processing, and it may simply be stored on the TSF. This will exacerbate the seepage of contaminated water to the environment, and will limit the densification of the tailings that would otherwise occur due to desiccation of the tailings on exposure. If a larger tailings footprint were developed early, cycling of tailings deposition in thin lifts between a number of cells could occur, maintaining the dormant cells dry to enhance desiccation and densification, and ultimate rehabilitation. The end result would be a much reduced stored volume of tailings, the potential for upstream raising, and ease of rehabilitation to a high level. "Surface support is a key component of most ground support systems which are applied as a means of reducing the risk of rockfall occurrence and maintaining serviceability of mine development. Surface support has two primary functions: distributing the applied load throughout the system by providing connection between rock bolts retaining smaller rocks that unravel between rock bolts.Confinement is also provided to the rock mass, which may increase its capacity to resist further degradation or loosening.Surface support has been routinely installed in most underground mines around the world for many years, yet the operators are still not always certain which type is best suited for deformable ground conditions. A number of factors need to be taken into consideration prior to selecting the type of surface support liner, such as its capacity, availability, practicality of installation, manual handling and loading conditions (static or dynamic) to ensure the system’s optimal performance in terms of safety and costs.This paper presents an overview of the surface support types currently used in underground mines in Australia. Shotcrete, weld mesh, high-tensile chainlink mesh, reinforced weld mesh and high energy absorption (HEA) mesh are discussed. A detailed description of each system is provided in terms of capacity, energy absorption, installation cycle and costs. The cost of each system has been normalised to the units of energy absorbed. Coal mining operations can impact on various types of surface infrastructure or natural features, including cliff-lines, steep slopes and natural watercourses. Longwall mining leads to a subsidence depression due to the changing geometry of the mined out area. The current regulatory process for managing subsidence in New South Wales (NSW) involves the preparation of a Subsidence Management Plan (SMP). This paper demonstrates the use of a Weights of Evidence (WofE) technique applied within a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment to predict potential areas for rockfalls along cliff-lines in the NSW Southern Coalfield. The WofE is a ædata-drivenÆ method that can be used to predict subsidence impacts prior to mining. The WofE method was applied to ten known rockfalls along the Cataract River to evaluate the reduced impact of not mining within 50 m of cliff-lines along the Nepean River. There is significant reduction of probabilities of rockfall occurrence when mining is avoided within 50 m of cliffs.

The 5.6 km Canning Tunnel was constructed to improve water supply from Canning Dam to the Perth metropolitan area. The site area is in the Darling Range which is essentially a laterite-capped plateau-remnant underlain by Archaean granitic rocks, intruded by dolerite. Two arrangements were available. After geotechnical investigations which included geological mapping, seismic refraction geo- physics, diamond drilling and mechanical rock testing, a single tunnel was selected in pre- ference to two short tunnels and a connecting pipeline. The tunnel is hydraulically equivalent to a fully lined tunnel 1.83 m in diameter and 5 580 m long. The alignment diverged from a straight line so that the initial upstream section was almost normal to the contours which allowed for minimal support requirements in a weathered zone. Although steel and con- crete lining was needed at both ends, the main section of the tunnel was unlined except for a concrete floor. A sand and rock trap with a capacity of 46 m3 was constructed near the outlet portal to collect debris and sand down to a size of about 2 mm. Portal excavations were in highly to completely weathered rock which extended 56 m into the tunnel at the upstream end, and 18 m at the downstream end. The current extraction method of the Platinum Group of Metals (PGM) from an ore concentrate and the subsequent separation of one PGM metal from another is a timeconsuming complicated multi-step process. The use of the Chemical Vapour Metal Refining (CVMR) process for the extraction and separation of PGMs is a simple and economical alternative. The paper covers the CVMR process, which is based on the formation of volatile metal compounds, followed by extraction and thermal decomposition into the pure metals and reagent gases. In the case of PGMs, CVMR does not use CO, and hence, the process is quite different from the carbonyl process previously attempted by a number of organisations and test facilities. CVMR extracts PGMs via synthesis of trifluorophosphine complexes at low pressures and low temperatures (80 to 100¦C). These two facts alone make the process highly economical, compared to other methods available. This paper presents a comparison between the process of extraction of PGMÆs and CVMR proprietary carbonyl process for the extraction of nickel and cobalt. In the carbonyl process, CVMR also uses very low pressures and temperatures, compared to those other processes currently use.

Many maintenance managers find it difficult to justify investments in maintenance improvement initiatives. In part, this is due to a tendency by mine managers to regard maintenance purely as a cost centre, and not as a process able to influence productive capacity and profit. It is also hindered by a lack of alignment between commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers, and the lack of formal business training amongst maintenance professionals. With this in mind, a model to assist maintenance managers in evaluating the benefits of maintenance improvement projects was recently formulated. The model considers four cost saving dimensions. These are: 1. reduction in the cost of unplanned repairs and maintenance,2. increased or accelerated production and/or sales,3. spares inventory reduction, and4. reduction in over-investment in physical assets and operating costs. This paper discusses the application of this model and a number of numerical examples are given to justify investments in maintenance improvement projects having varying objectives.

The great philosopher, Marshall McLuhan, is said to have stated that the use of forecasting as a means of guiding future actions is akin to driving an automobile through observations made in the rear-view mirror! In effect, in forecasting it is assumed that there will be an orderly progression from the past into the future, and that the model will be sufficiently unvarying for use to gauge both the directions and the rates of change. The concepts of forecasting have served man well in disciplines in which the relationship between causes and effects can be clearly demonstrated; such as between rainfall and crop yield, for example. These are of no value, however, when conditions change rapidly and unpredictably, or when there is no model at all. Even worse, under such circumstances our preconceived notions may cause us to make some horrendous errors in judgement. Such are the risks at present in attempting to make an assessment of the educational needs of the minerals industry for the coming century! The model, and the conceptions that we have had of the linkages between cause and effect are in disarray. Minerals markets are chaotic, and there is almost no ability to forecast trends in metal values. Linkages between supply and demand seem tenuous. Internationally, producers are struggling for survival. Mine closures, temporary shutdowns, and reopenings are frequent occurrences. Decision-making under uncertainty is probably one of the most certain things about the world mining industry Today!

The scale and seriousness of AustraliaÆs social and environmental problems are no longer in doubt. We are consuming the opportunities of future Australian generations by our lifestyle choices. And at the global level, human activities are altering the very systems on which our species depends. Doing nothing about such problems as climate change is not an option. It is possible to move to a sustainable future but it will require fundamental changes to our values and national social institutions. We must recognise that we share a common future with the entire human family and the other species with which we share the planet. It is not just our humanitarian duty to improve the lot of the poorest people of the world. It is also enlightened self-interest because a world of increasing inequality will be a world of increasingly destructive tension.

Mining and metals projects have tended to increase in both scope and cost to a point where many projects are Droperly designated as superprojects. Specialist engineer- constructors have developed organisations and systems to provide project management services during the design and construct phase of large projects. However, the engineer-constructor is also required to provide a wide spectrum of services during the evolution of large projects prior to the construction phase. Some common phases of pre-construction evolution are identified together with the associated types of specialised services which may be required. A project management team approach is described which has been developed for the design and construct phase. It is suggested that a modified matrix organisation could be adapted to the provision of special- ised services as well as to project management for ore-construction phases of the project.

Today, the selection of a mining method is a multi-criteria decisionmaking process, with many factors in this process connected to each other. These trends do not have a high degree of confidence. In this study the analytical hierarchy process was used to select the suitable mining method for anomaly No 3 of Gol-Gohar iron mine of Iran. The results of this study show that gathering all existing information from the exploration stages and using AHP technique, the open pit mining method is the mining method for this anomaly.

King Island is situated at the western approach of Bass Strait and approximately mid way between Victoria and Tasmania. The scheelite orebodies lie within the south east of the island. Ore bearing horizons from 10 m to 40 m thick occur in south and east dipping stratiform deposits. The orebodies occur in skarn formed by contact metasomatic replacement of carbonate rocks by granite intrusives. The scheelite is deposited as fine disseminated grains in and along the margins of andradite garnets in the skarn. King Island Scheelite operates two under- ground mines from which 350 000 tonnes per year are obtained. The Dolphin mine produces almost two-thirds of the total. See Figure 1. The Dolphin orebody lies beneath the sea and an area of reclamation. The orebody is inter- sected by zones of major dislocation. A chequerboard post pillar cut and fill stoping system has been chosen to provide the necessary support to the hanging wall. Because the stability of the pillars is critical to the economic welfare of the mine, considerable attention is given to the reduction of overbreak.

Water is a defining feature of the Pilbara. Its management was and remains vital for the pastoral industry which European settlers established when they first came to the Pilbara, and for the mining industry which now dominates economic activity in the Pilbara. Water availability in the Pilbara is, however, problematic. Severe droughts and major floods can occur at close intervals. In response to this uncertainty, the Department of Water undertook a Prefeasibility Study to determine, at a high level, the water requirements and opportunities in the Pilbara region. This paper reports on the outcomes of this study and the water integration opportunities in the region, identifying the sources of water supply and offers possible options for managing this water sustainably for the present and future demand. A range of supply opportunities is reviewed including: dewatering from mining operations, surface water, and desalination. All opportunities were subject to order of magnitude costing, including capital, whole of life and retail unit pricing with preferred options receiving further interrogation through triple bottom line (TBL) analysis to prioritise solutions. Options were also subject to intangible quantification (IQ) including benefits from the reduction of carbon emissions to ensure that the preferred option is based on factors other than just the least cost. Demand analysis was undertaken to identify current and future requirements and were assessed through review and integration of regional and sub regional master plans and consultation with mining, agriculture, industry and the community. The paper concludes that the viability of a Pilbara integrated water supply scheme depends on the development of a financial mechanism involving both government and industry participation models. The agreed scheme formed the basis of a submission to Infrastructure Australia for funding assistance.

The granulites and related "dry" igneous rocks tend to be passed over during exploration for metals. Preliminary data show that high trace concentrations of Cu, Ni and other metals of economic interest are common in orthopyroxene and some of the other granulite minerals. During retrograde metamorphism of granulites, pyroxenes are converted to amphiboles or phyllosilicates, and significant quantities of metals are released and become available for incorporat- ion into new mineral phases, or may be transported elsewhere. S--rich scapolite is the normal scapolite of granulites. Its retrogression to secondary plagioclase provides much S which scavenges Cu, Ni, etc., from pyroxenes undergoing retrogression, thus producing ore-fluids. A full analysis of a scapolite with 5.10 per cent S03 is given. Beryl is unstable in granulites but the rare Be mineral taaffeite (Al4Pf (Be,Fe)O3) with 5,50 per cent BeO occurs in central Australia as a pale green Tabular mineral easily confused for chloritoid in hand-specimen. Metamorphic differentiation and mobilization of primary ore concentrations are major factors controlling their post-granulite attitude and grade.

Following an underground coal mine explosion, it is important that ventilation is quickly restored to ventilate the mine and affect a mine rescue. To achieve this, surface ventilation fans must be suitably protected from explosion damage, but still able to be quickly restored.A review of all Australian coal mine regulations was carried out, revealing that Australia has no prescriptive regulations that specify the design of explosion relief panels and the protection of ventilation fans in the event of an underground explosion.To better define the level of protection required, this paper reviews and extracts details from relevant major international regulations and standards on the subject.A suitable design methodology for the protection of ventilation fans is presented that could be applied in Australia, using a combination of explosion relief panels, appropriate isolation of the fan, and ventilation shaft/mine design.CITATION:Rafferty, T and Bourcier, R, 2013. The level of wire rope technology used in mine hoisting applications has a significant effect on the overall efficiency of the hoisting system. This paper discusses the effect that a reduction in rope mass per unit length and an increase in rope breaking strength can have on rock skip capacity and hence mine shaft output. A 20 per cent reduction in rope mass per metre for a typical 48 mm hoisting rope, while maintaining the breaking strength, increases the skipÆs capacity by circa 30 per cent at a suspended rope length of 3000 m. Such gains in shaft output, without any significant changes to the shaft or winder design, can have major implications for the feasibility of future deep mine projects. The technical challenge for rope manufacturers is how to get rid of 20 to 30 per cent of the rope mass while keeping the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity of the whole rope constant. CASAR are currently developing steel wire rope constructions where the steel IWRC has been replaced with high strength, high modulus fibres such as Kevlar«, Spectra« and Dyneema«. One of the key aspects of such composite rope designs is to ensure equal load sharing between the different rope components, ie in proportion to their area. If there is a significant difference in modulus between the fibre core and the steel outer strands, the core may not carry its proper proportion of the load and the outer strands would be overloaded. Some technical aspects of the design of composite steel wire ropes are discussed. A design and operational issue that needs careful consideration is the safe non destructive testing (NDT) of composite ropes. Traditional magnetic NDT would only be capable of inspecting the steel wires. Techniques therefore need to be developed that would give operators a reliable indication of the condition of the load bearing fibre core. This paper also discusses possible solutions to this very important NDT question.

Development of measurement techniques pertinent to the industry is described as is the early application of mini-computers. The current application of microprocessor based equipment and the benefits obtained from this range of equipment are discussed. A speculative opinion as to what future instrument development may offer the industry is outlined.

The Merensky Reef at Northam Platinum Mine in South Africa is characterised by a high degree of variability with respect to reef elevation (difficult to mine), as well as mineralogy and texture (difficult to process). Development along strike and down dip of multiple reef types has led to unpredictable run-of-mine characteristics that pose problems for the mineral processing circuit at Northam. Following mining terminology, Normal, Transitional (NP2) and Pothole (P2) Merensky reef types can be defined, and this geometallurgical study aims to characterise and understand the relationship between their mineralogical characteristics and laboratory scale batch flotation performance. The plagioclase-rich NP2 reef ore is the easiest ore to process in terms of capacity for high mill throughput as well as flotation performance. The lack of very fine-grained disseminated sulfide textures in the NP2 reef ore results in better liberation characteristics relative to the Normal and P2 reef types. Consequently, chalcopyrite, pentlandite and sulfide recoveries are highest for the NP2 reef ore. The lack of ferromagnesian minerals in the NP2 reef ore also results in the recovery of the least amount of floatable gangue during flotation tests. The Normal and P2 reef ores are similar to each other, with an orthopyroxene-rich mineralogy with associated alteration minerals. The P2 reef is also characterised by the highest sulfide content and degree of pentlandite liberation. Chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite liberation is only significantly increased by a change in grind for the Normal reef ore. The change in grind, however, only significantly affects pentlandite flotation performance and overall froth stability for the Normal reef ore. However, for all three ores, a small change in grind has a detrimental effect on pentlandite flotation performance.
