Today tunnel segment liners are sealed with corner-vulcanised gaskets made of extruded elastomeric compression profiles. The profile geometries and the elastomeric materials have been further developed in course of time to meet the steadily increasing water-proofing requirements. After 40 years of using such compression gaskets, a wide range of proven standard profile geometries and well-known brands can be found on the market. Even so, there is still potential for further developments and improvement, not only with regard to the water-proofing performance. Permanently increasing cost pressure in the segment production plants demands further developments and new solutions with regard to application techniques. Flotation science and technology are related to three major sub- processes which are organized in a hierarchical structure as shown in Fig. 1. The basic sub-process is the chemical process which affects the attachment of air bubbles to mineral particles. In particular, the chem- ical process is related with the adsorption of surface active sub- stances at the gas-liquid, liquid- solid, and gas-liquid-solid inter- faces. This field has been most intensively explored in flotation research. The second domain in flotation research is concerned with the mineral particle to air bubble attachment sub- process in the system. This sub- process represents the dynamics of particle and bubble encounter where the contact angle and the induction time, determined by the surface chem- istry of the system, are among the most significant parameters. This sub-process can be referred to as the micro-process as against the third sub-process, or the macro-process, which corresponds to the integral behaviour of the system. Two other sub-processes are integrated into the macro-process in which they may not reveal themselves explicitly in the details. The third sub-process does not entail surface-chemical or physi- cal events any more, but it represents them all inclusively. To represent this sub-process we use mathematical equations, called models. Only in some simple or simplified cases can the models be solved exactly to find out the behaviour of the flotation system in which we are interested. Digital

This paper is a tribute to the late Dr Donald Martin Hausen as a father of applied mineralogy. His dedication to promoting the field through technical societies and through his professional work was outstanding, and his activities as a humanitarian are noteworthy. Dr HausenÆs involvement in technical societies included organising and conducting the only ICAM congress that was held in the USA, co-founding and nurturing the Process Mineralogy Committee within the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum Engineers, and participating in CAM, the International Mineral Processing Congress, as well as other technical societies. The Process Mineralogy Committee that he co-founded has continuously organised annual meetings in the USA by conducting a series of sessions, and 17 books on the proceedings from those sessions have been published. As an applied mineralogist Dr Hausen solved many problems in exploitation and processing of minerals, metals and materials, especially gold. He helped to find many Carlin-type gold orebodies by outlining targets using alteration halos as determined by X-ray diffractometry, and he defined mineral characteristics that affected gold metallurgy and cyanidation. It is also noteworthy that Dr Hausen and his wife, Mary, opened their arms and home to many foster children and were instrumental in their placement in many homes. They also sponsored refugees from south-east Asia, taught them English, housed them, and provided constant support until the refugees became responsible and independent US citizens.

Entropy is an important concept both in natural and social sciences.Considering the preparatory process of the earthquakes as an open system, in view of basic ideas of the Theory of the Dissipative Structure, the seis-mological Entropy is introduced as an order parame-ter, describing the scale of order associated with the earthquake distribution in time, space and mag-nitude. The features of evolution of seismic acti-vities before and after the large earthquakes have been studied by using the seismological entropy.The preliminary results show that the seismological entropy in certain region decreases as the large earthquake is approaching, it means that the distri-bution of earthquakes has turned gradually in order from disorder.It is expectation that the application of the Principle of Entropy in seismological research will deepen the understanding of the physical process of earthquake preparation. Meanwhile, it will also offer some enlightements in studying mitigation of seismic hazard as well as earthquake prediction.

Until recently the Corus IJmuiden pellet plant produced approximately 4.5 Mtpa of pellets. Corus IJmuiden is currently running a program to increase its pig iron production to 6.4 million tonnes HM per annum. The burden of the Corus IJmuiden blast furnaces consists of approximately 50 per cent high basicity sinter and 50 per cent acid pellets, both produced in-house. To accommodate the increased pig iron production, the capacity of the pellet plant needed to be increased to 5.0 Mtpa. The productivity was increased by modifications to the plant layout, which were implemented during the 2006 cold maintenance stop. In addition, the composition of the ore blends is optimised to gain productivity.

A review is given of the development of the author's ideas on the relationship of ore occurrence to regional dislocations in the earth's crust, presently identifiable in particular areas as linear discontinuities in patterns of geological and geophysical data. Ideas originating from field observations in Broken Hill were developed in conjunction with three-dimensional kinematic deformation models which were devised to simulate rock structures, and to illustrate their response to assumed linear and planar movements at the scale of mine and regional geology. These led to the study of linear features in the pattern of Broken Hill district geology, and to the observation that the Broken Hill lode occupies a "cross-roads" position at the intersection of regional geological lineaments where they cross through and deflect the host rocks. A genetic association was therefore proposed. The recognition of significant regional lineaments requires special techniques and treatments of field data originally developed for the Broken Hill situation. The subsequent application of the work to the Western Australian shield revealed that known major nickel and gold deposits also occur where the host rocks are crossed by one or more regional lineaments. These lineaments were recognised as part of a continental tectonic pattern of major linear trends with which major ore deposits are associated. The ideas were later used in exploration leading to the discovery of the Olympic Dam deposit at Roxby Downs, South Australia, which is related to regional lineaments.

The topaz resource at Torrington in northern N.S.W is currently the subject of a joint research and development programme managed by Pacific Copper Ltd, This programme has culminated in a pilot topaz calcination plant, located at Parramatta, which, through its operation, will establish the commercial viability of developing this mineral as an industrial raw material for both the refractory and fluoride chemical industries.

Big Bell Mine started experiencing relatively large mining related seismic events, and accompanying rockbursts, from February 1999. Twelve rockbursts damaged access development from February 1999 to June 2000, with severe damage extending for up to 100 m along footwall drives. Five seismic events associated with the rockbursts were recorded by the AGSO, measuring 1.9, 2.2, 1.7, 2.4 and 2.2 on the Richter scale. These events affected 485 and 460 footwall drives in August and November 1999 and 535 footwall drive in June 2000 (drive level nomenclature is equivalent to the depth below surface and RL). After the third event (July 1999) it was apparent that the seismicity was not a once-off phenomenon. This (sudden) onset of seismicity required management to implement a series of precautionary measures:to ensure the safety of the workforce, to maintain continuity of production, and to reduce rockburst damage rehabilitation. The measures included extended re-entry periods and exclusion zones in high-risk areas, improved rockburst resistant support systems in areas prone to damaging seismic activity and improved support systems in areas prone to shakedown damage. A full-scale minewide ISS seismic system was ordered in October 1999 and commissioned in February 2000. A portable eight-channel CSIR-Miningtek system was installed at short notice as an interim measure in August 1999. This CSIR system covered the northern producing stopes, where the majority of the rockbursts had occurred. The objective of the seismic monitoring was to monitor relative activity and to determine trends with regards to time and location. MAP3D numerical modelling was used to investigate the relationship between seismicity and various combinations of stress components to assess the relative seismic risk in both current and proposed working areas. This information is used to determine where and at what stage in the mining cycle the rockburst resistant support is required. Analysis of the seismicity has determined two distinct modes of seismicity û small-scale localised, high frequency events in high stress areas and larger events related to shear along previously intact foliation surfaces. This paper includes a summary of the seismic history, seismic data analysis, support system design, mine design adjustments and management action to minimise the effects of seismic activity at Big Bell Mine.

Martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits that show no trace of hydrothermal alteration may extend to more than 200 m below the permanent water table and are typically saprolite with evidence of exposure to the physical, chemical and biogenic processes of soil formation restricted to the low-grade goethitised upper levels. Typically no evidence of the prior presence of chert bands is discernable within the ore yet it has been assumed that these ore deposits derive from cherty banded iron formation (BIF) through supergene leaching of the chert bands and thus classified as supergene iron ore deposits. The fact that chert bands are absent and that these ore deposits are highly weathered does not prove supergene leaching of the chert bands. Quartz is one of the most resistant minerals to chemical weathering within the saprolite and large scale dissolution of quartz is absent from all other quartz-bearing saprolites, yet this unlikely process is accepted without question as the origin of the most abundant form of high-grade iron ore deposits. It is proposed that martite-goethite high-grade iron ore deposits formed only from BIF in which chert bands were absent prior to weathering. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Pneumatic flotation, as developed by Dr Rainer Imhof, has been applied in commercial beneficiation operations since 1987. Over 85 flotation cells have been installed in more than 30 operations, successfully beneficiating a wide range of minerals. Pneumatic flotation is however still considered as a non-conventional flotation process. Due to its highly selective nature in operation it has generally found its market in difficult applications where conventional flotation equipment has struggled. Compa±fa Minera Huasco (CMH) operates an iron ore pellet plant in central Chile. CMH desired to produce a low silica pellet for the export market where the SiO2 grade should not exceed 1.5 per cent. It is common practice in other countries to float quartz from hematite with relative ease. However, the silicates contained in the magnetite ore of CMH are only present as quartz in small quantities and the major undesirable silicates are difficult to float. CMH spent considerable time on developing a reverse flotation process and a reagent suite to try and reduce the silica content to acceptable levels. However, extensive laboratory and pilot plant tests with conventional mechanical tank type cells and with column cells failed to produce the required reduction in impurities. A series of tests with pneumatic flotation cells indicated that this type of flotation technology could achieve the required silica target. A 500 tph Imhoflot pneumatic flotation plant was subsequently constructed and successfully commissioned by CMH, making it one of the largest iron ore flotation plants in the world. This paper details the background and testing that was undertaken by CMH which led them to choose pneumatic flotation as the preferred process and compares the test results with that achieved in the industrial plant.

The Golden Cross Mine is located within the Waitekauri Valley near the southern end of the Coromandel Ranges, eight kilometres north-west of Waihi, North Island, New Zealand. The mine is owned and operated in a joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Ltd (20 per cent). The underground mine produces gold and silver from low sulphidation epithermal quartz veins which developed in the shallow parts of a meteoric water dominated system during the Upper Miocene (7.36 - 6.67 Ma). The Empire Vein System is hosted within a dilational structural environment which developed at the lithological contact between acid intrusives, rhyolitic-dacitic tuffs and reworked pyroclastics, and undifferentiated andesites. The formation of the Empire Vein System was controlled by the rheological properties of the host rocks and variable displacement along a series of normal, right lateral, easterly-dipping faults. These faults represent sub-parallel zones of master shearing within a Riedel shear model. Underground mining extracts ore from the steeply dipping hangingwall and the complex footwall veins of the Empire Vein System. Initially sills are driven along the hangingwall vein on ten to fifteen metre sublevel intervals. In the footwall zones where significant mineralisation adjacent to the hangingwall sill drives has been identified, a series of cross-cuts and footwall drives (sub-parallel to the hangingwall sill) are also developed. Where continuity of mineralisation and ground conditions permit a combination of post pillar flatbacking and AVOCA longhole benching methods are used. Detailed underground mapping of lithology, quartz veining and major structures provides the information for designing ground support and footwall pillars, planning mine development and ore extraction sequencing. Sectional interpretation displays the vertical extent of faults, fractures and the vein system. The mining methods used underground at the mine have evolved through a thorough understanding of the structural complexity and the systematic geological mapping of the Empire Vein System.

The determination of mineral composition is necessary in the mineral sands industry. Tiwest has developed a procedure for safe and convenient determination of the mineral composition using a magnetic separation followed by chemical analysis using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. This then requires the conversion of the elemental assays to mineral compositions. A project at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has developed a convenient analysis method for this conversion. This analysis is based on a reconciliation of the of the assays of the sample with the standard mineral assays by making minimal adjustments based on the assay accuracies to both sets of assays. As well as providing the mineral composition it to be tested for other applications and variations of the procedure to be evaluated. Given a range of samples, testing for the accuracy of the assays of the standard minerals, has been demonstrated.

With the evolution rate of technologies, earthmoving equipment users are establishing vision statements for their operation out to and in some cases beyond 2000. Autonomous systems are receiving a lot of 'press' - and rightly so, as they hold a potential for achieving quantum leaps in productivity and cost gains. Caterpillar feels that it is important that the infrastructure of on-board systems are understood and can be utilised more in the near term to `grow' a user up to the stage of autonomous operation.

Dump leaching began at Teller in late-1988 at a rate of 4 MTPA and has been progressively expanded to the present rate of 10 MTPA. Teller's on-going commitment to dump leaching is driven by the amenability of gold ores to the process and the availability of large tonnages of low grade gold ore. The sequence of evaluating ores for dump leaching involves rolling bottle tests on coarsely ground ore, followed by small and large column leaching and finally trial heaps. Trial heap tests are very expensive and an alternative approach to this is large diameter column leaching.A four-column permanent facility was built at Teller to specifically evaluate the leaching characteristics of new dump leach ores. Details of construction, operation and dismantling are discussed in the paper. Capital cost for the four column facility was some $45 940, while operating costs are about $24 800 per column.

This paper discusses the implementation and potential limitations of the method for estimating sampling and analytical errors of multiple source mine output blended into a shipping product, described by Everett and Ziegelaar (2010). The practice of quality measurement varies between iron ore miners. The common objective is to monitor effective resource utilisation and control of product quality to customers. A flow diagram is given presenting the various options used by iron ore mine operators and the merits of the different options are discussed.

Mineral occurrences of the Hillgrove Au-Sb-W district are hosted in late Palaeozoic polydeformed, hornfelsed metasediments and Permo-Carboniferous granitoids of the NewEngland Orogen. In excess of 204 individual occurrences have been identified to date with the mineralisation developed as strike extensive (>20 km of known veining) and potentially depth extensive steeply dipping fissures. These are contained within an elongate area measuring some 9 km by 6 km in surface dimensions. Recorded gold production of 720 000 ounces along with current resources in the order of 340 000 ounces highlight the significance of this district. Historical antimony production is estimated at in excess of 50 000 metric tonnes. Significant tungsten of over 2000 t in the form of scheelite has also been produced from the field. Mineralisation is developed in veins, vein breccias, sheeted veins, network stockworks and as alteration sulfide haloes to the main structures. The vast majority of fissures are subvertical and vary in widths of up to 20 m in places. Paragenetic studies have previously indicated that the earliest mineralising event was a scheelite-bearing phase of quartz veining. Subsequent phases of arsenopyrite-pyrite-quartz-carbonate veining were accompanied by gold and minor base metal sulfides. Alteration is typically sericite-ankerite-quartz. Overprinting stibnite-quartz veining with gold-electrum, aurostibite and arsenopyrite form an important subsequent phase. Veining can be inferred from historical records to extend for vertical depths of over 1 km.

"A geotechnical centrifuge can characterise and model the interaction of tailings and fluids over very long time periods by accelerating drainage and consolidation processes. This technology can be considered an environmental ‘time machine’ for designing and evaluating tailings storage projects and verifying numerical models. The Broadbent G-18 geotechnical centrifuge (2 m diameter, up to 875 rev/min) and associated equipment is a unique facility commissioned in 2011 at UNSW Australia for applied research in low-permeability materials such as mine tailings. Two centrifuge modules are available: the permeameter module for characterisation and physical modelling and the strongbox module for physical modelling.This paper presents examples of geotechnical centrifuge applications for the: consolidation of slurries and dewatering design of earthen barriers compatible with tailings chemistry prediction of contaminant mobility. The specifications and capability of the UNSW Australia geotechnical centrifuge and associated instrumentation is also presented, along with preliminary analysis of the confidence intervals associated with permeability testing of a set of samples of varying heterogeneity. Drainage velocity through a mine tailings sample increases linearly with g-level in the centrifuge permeameter until tailings consolidation occurs. Alternatively, geotechnical centrifuge experiments can be designed to limit consolidation so as to quantify permeability changes that may occur with geochemical interactions between fluids and mine tailings or earthen containments. Reactive solute transport through mine tailings can be simulated at realistic solid:liquid ratios when chemical equilibrium is maintained during geotechnical centrifuge testing. Carefully designed physical models of tailings disposal tested at accelerated gravity can therefore provide a realistic evaluation of tailings consolidation and drainage and the potential for subsurface migration of contaminants from mine tailings over long time periods.CITATION:Timms, W and Anderson, D, 2015. Simple parameters, capable of easy observation on-site under operating conditions without interruption to production, are outlined for the operational assessment of underground conveyor systems. Recording techniques, methods of analysis and deduction of operational characteristics are discussed for batch inputs to several points of a multiple belt conveyor system with limited inter-belt storage capacity. Particular attention is given to input and output load- time distributions, utilisation of inter-belt storage capability and system shutdown behaviour. Actual data, observed for a transfer feeder located between two trunk conveyor belts in an underground coal mine, is used to illustrate the operational assessment of an underground system. Load sensitive feedback systems-are briefly considered.
