Two separate mine rehabilitation programmes carried out by Australian Consolidated Industries Limited (A.C.I.) in South Australia at Normanville and Port Lawler are discussed. Emphasis is given to the methods used, the results achieved and to possible future improvements.

Preliminary petrographic investigations of eight Upper Permian coal seams of the Muja sub-basin, Collie Coalfield, reveal that the coal is high in inertinite and relatively low in vitrinite and exinite contents. The exinite content of Collie coal is relatively high when compared to other Australian coal of similar age. In addition the mineral matter content of the coal is very much lower than comparable Permian coal of Eastern Australia. The higher exinite content could be attributed to the type of Glossopteris flora, and the lower mineral matter content to the environment of deposition postulated for the Collie Coal Measures.

The paper explains the genesis of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education to its unique position in mining engineering education. A description follows of the development of the Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management which commenced in 1979 in the cooperative mode of four groups of three weeks full- time study followed by twenty-three weeks in industry. In particular an analysis will be given of the state of origin of students, ages and employing industries. Given the experience from the evolution of this course a similar process is described for the Graduate Diploma in Mining which has been accredited to commence early in 1987.

Opinions vary widely within the community on what are legitimate environmental social respon- sibilities. The extreme conservationists see the responsibility as the total preservation of the natural environment achieved by opposition to all forms of industrial development that would disturb it. The `growth-at-any-price men' consider it more important to stimulate economic growth, develop new industries, and maximize profit letting the environment take care of itself: within this wide spectrum of concern are the middle-of- the-road men, part of the vast majority, fully aware of the need to compromise to achieve a satisfactory economic growth rate whilst pre- serving to the greatest extent practicable the con- ditions upon which we depend for a balanced self-perpetuating existence. Environmental change is not new. It is the inevitable accompaniment of human activity. Plato wrote in the 5th Century B.C.* of the devastating changes wrought by man and his animals on the ancient world of the Mediter- ranean. Zinifex Rosebery Mine is a lead-zinc underground mining operation located at the base of Mount Black, on the West Coast of Tasmania. Mining activities at the Rosebery Mine have been undertaken for over 100 years, and it has been operating in its current form for over 60 years. A large surface and underground exploration drilling program over the last 18 months has increased the mineÆs expected mine life from five to 12 years, with expectations that over the next 18 months as the program continues this will swell to 20 plus years. Zinifex Ltd secured Rosebery Mine in April 2004 and commissioned a detailed life-of-mine (LOM) study on all aspects of the operation. One of the most detailed sections of this report was on the state of the current ventilation system. It was identified in this report that for mining at the current depth of approximately 1100 m to continue a minimum 30 per cent increase in ventilation quantity was essential, as well as a likely requirement for a refrigerant cooling plant for each of the two deepest panels, the K and P lenses. It was identified that Zinifex did not have personnel with the expertise in underground refrigeration to manage and implement a project of this nature. A second report was commissioned with Bluhm Burton Engineering (BBE), a South African firm specialising in both surface and underground large-scale refrigeration plants. BBE concluded that two refrigeration plants were required to provide the necessary cooling power in the lower sections of the mine. In 2005, with BBE as technical consultants, Zinifex Rosebery Mine embarked on a project to commission two underground refrigeration units capable of lowering the wet bulb temperature at the decline face by four degrees centigrade. This paper is intended to give the reader an overview of: Rosebery Mine operations,Rosebery underground refrigeration project,technical difficulties associated with implementing an underground refrigeration system, andkey learnings to date.

The concentrator plant of Fahrica Mine, that started production in 1977, was using nine Jones wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) of the standard type DP 317 with a 1.5 mm gap width for the production of pelletfeed concentrate. These WHIMS units were operating in parallel with a feed rate of 110 t per hour, with about 47 per cent Fe in the feed, and with a maximum of only 0.8 per cent magnetite. The field strength was about 1.2 Tesla. From 1986, the mine has adapted its production facilities to mine and concentrate larger amounts of lowgrade itabintes to maximise the use of the available iron ore reserves. An increase of up to three per cent magnetite in the magnetic separator feed, resulted in a reduction of capacity. This was due to partial clogging of the separation boxes at high field intensities, which were required for the recovery of the very fine hematite. Even by lowering the feed rate and the field intensity the problem could not be resolved. After extensive testwork in a pilot plant, with a Jones separator model DI' 90, the commercial WHIMS plant was modified into a two stage process using the existing nine Jones separators. The gap of the first stage with four machines was increased to a width of 3.5 mm, corresponding to a maximum field intensity of 0.7 Tesla. This first 'medium intensity scalping stage' is followed by a second 'real' high intensity WHIMS step with five machines operating at the original settings with 1.5 mm gap width and 1.0 Testa maximum field intensity. Feed rates of up to 320 tons per hour in the first and up to 240 tons per hour in the second stage could be achieved. The design concept of the concentrator at Fabrica mine is described using the old and new flowsheets. Details of the pilot plant testwork as well as actual performance data of the new plant section are presented.

AIR-LOCK AT No. 14 SHAFT.Some time ago it became desirable to raise and lower the McBride tunnel men to save them walking the inclined tunnel, about a mile in length, with a dip of nearly 600 ft., and a maximum gradient of 1 in 4. The main Upcast shaft, No. 14, was, therefore, equipped for winding the men. As this shaft was the main ventilating shaft for the McBride tunnel mine, it was necessary to take the greatest precautions against leakage of air. The writer therefore devised the concrete structure shown in Plate 1.The structure, as shown, surrounds the shaft inside the poppet legs. As the men are wound on double-decked cages (twelve men to each deck) provision is made at both top and bottom for the two decks to be loaded and emptied simultaneously. The doorsover the sky shaft, shown in the drawing, have been cut out and the sky shaft has been close-timbered with a double layer of T. and G. flooring boards, with building paper between, nearly up to the thimble frame, a small hole only being left for the winding rope topass through. The space between the ramps is glazed with plate glass to allow the winding-engine driver a good view of the pit top.The men are wound from two levels, 302 ft. and 611 ft.2. Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.

The Beaconsfield gold mine processing plant is a complex operation and utilises crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration, sulfide flotation, bacterial oxidation, cyanidation and zinc cementation to recover gold from the partially refractory ore. This paper discusses the challenges, developments and advancements throughout the processing plant since start up, which have culminated in a 25 per cent increase in the mill throughput over the nameplate design and a concomitant gold recovery increase from 75 to 92 per cent. The improvements have been attained via advancements in mechanical integrity, metallurgical review, process control and operator training, resulting in the current operation producing over 630 000 ounces of gold to date.

The New MetroRail City Project was completed in 2007 in Perth, Western Australia. The project included construction of two underground stations, twin bored rail tunnels of 1.4 km combined length and cut-and- cover tunnels and dive structures of about 1 km total length. It is the first major underground construction project within the Perth central business district (CBD). This paper provides an introduction to the project and describes the geology and hydrogeology of the area. Ground conditions varied significantly along the alignment from soft estuarine muds in an area of reclamation to very dense cemented sands and very stiff to hard clays. Deep foundations for the project extend down into the bedrock below the CBD, a Tertiary siltstone/sandstone. Key geotechnical hazards encountered during the project are discussed. The building protection methodology on the project is described, including damage assessment, condition surveys, monitoring and protection of key structures.

At Renison Limited, on the West Coast of Tasmania, modern trackless decline mining is practised to exploit the various tin bearing sulphide deposits. With footwall accesses, one of three adaptations of horizontal mechanised cut and fill, 1. unsupported, 2. pillar supported,and 3. unsupported - resuing is used to stope each defined ore block. The stoping method is basically determined by the dip and true thickness of the ore with emphasis on high ore recovery. Extreme flexibility is possible by the selective mining of stope lifts, the consumption of development waste as fill and the utilisation of the same mobile equipment in all phases of production. This has resulted in high productivity and low cost per tonne of ore.

Regular monitoring for methane gas is required near working faces in gassy underground mines where the potential for methane ignitions is greatest. However, high concentrations of methane can also accumulate outby the face where methane levels are monitored less frequently. Wearing a personal methane monitor equipped with an alarm could protect persons working in these outby areas from injury or death due to methane ignitions. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted studies to evaluate methanometers that could be used as person-wearable monitors. For the present study, seven different person-wearable monitors that are not currently approved for underground use were evaluated. This paper describes test procedures used to evaluate performance of methane monitors that could be used underground for continuous personal monitoring of methane. The information in this report provides data that allows the reader to make side-by side comparisons of these instruments.

The Bureau of Mines used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas to evaluate the effectiveness of gob ventilation and/or sealing practices at three coal mines, each having different problems associated with their mined- out areas. The purpose of these ventilation studies was to better understand whether current techniques employed for ventilation or sealing are successful at minimizing the potential for gob fires and explosions. The work performed at each mine is discussed: One is a longwall operation that uses ventilation to carry off hazardous gases, and two are room- and-pillar operations, each with far different concerns, that seal off the gobs to isolate them from the main mine ventilation. In all cases, employment of the Bureau's SF6 tracer gas technique resulted in answers to questions raised by the mine operators concerning the effectiveness of their gob ventilation or sealing practices in preventing mine fires.

A substitute for rutile can be produced by leaching natural or pre-treated ilmenite in hydrochloric acid. Ilmenite in its natural form is an extraordinarily inactive mineral from which the selective removal of iron is rather difficult. The reactivity of ilmenite so that it can be leached with dilute hydro- chloric acid (=2O% w/w) can be enhanced by pre-treatment steps of oxidation and re- duction. The temperatures at which oxidation and reduction are carried out have an effect on both the kinetics of these steps and the leaching kinetics and optimum temperatures for oxidation and reduction are 950 and 850¦C respectively. The mechanism of leaching of iron from pretreated ilmenite and the effects of rate of agitation, temperature, acid con- centration and addition of ferrous chloride to hydrochloric acid on leaching kinetics and production of fines are discussed in the paper.

In October 1980 the two existing flotation circuits were combined into a single new circuit. This circuit used modern 11.3 m3 flotation cells which replaced 1.4 m3 units. Sometime after this change, a significant deterioration in metallurgical performance occurred. This paper describes the work done to discover the causes of deterioration in performance and actions taken. The program implemented to prevent a future occurrence is also presented. The work included analysis of routine plant data, analysis of surveys to obtain element and mineral flows on both a sized and unsized basis, some quantitative mineralogy, and analysis of some external factors.

The continuous casting of zinc alloys has been of fundamental importance for many years in the production of a number of products, including sheet for architectural applications, battery cans for dry cells and wire for metallising. The intrinsic benefits of continuous casting, including efficiency and high tonnage capability, uniformity of metallurgical structure and properties, and absence of voids and other defects, have contributed to the success of these products. Less well known, but of growing importance, is the more recent application of continuous casting technology to the production of zinc alloy bar stock products, including bearing stock, machining bar stock, forging stock and cathodic protection anodes. A wide range of zinc alloys are now continuously cast in a variety of cross sectional shapes and sizes to suit the diverse characteristics of these products. Of particular significance are the introduction of hollow zinc-aluminum bearing stock, and the availability of zinc alloy machining bar stock for hydraulic applications and for producing prototypes of zinc alloy pressure die castings. In addition to the traditional benefits, continuous casting provides special properties which are important in the application of these bar stock products. The list of successful applications of continuously cast zinc alloy bar stock is growing rapidly, and the market potential for resultant new zinc applications appears to be significant.

The mines are part of a Joint Venture managed by Exxon Coal and Minerals Australia Limited (ECMAL). Currently all the mines output of over five million tonnes per annum is sold into the export market predominantly as a steaming product.

This paper reviews the historical data on relative height changes of landmasses with respect to sea level for Pacific Rim countries.It discusses existing theories of the Greenhouse effect, and the interaction with the vertical movements of the continental plates which leads to different effects for different places. Possible future scenarios are described and directions for future research and measurement programs are given.Relative sea levels are governed not only the increase of water from deglaciation but also by a range of other factors such as variable water storage in lakes and the atmosphere, thermal expansion of the ocean, ocean currents, and the shape of the ocean and the continents. Sea floor spreading, for example, is ultimately more significant than deglaciation in sea level control but is generally much slower.
