This paper looks at the problems associated with surface settlements and other subsidence effects from the underground extraction of coal in relation to consent applications under the Resource Management Act. The main features of subsidence are examined with respect to identifying the adverse effects as defined under the RMA. Particular attention is paid to sites where little or no data is available as in the case of greenfield sites or at mines where new or different mining methods are being introduced. In these situations it is not possible to make accurate predictions of settlements or strains and therefore other factors need to be considered. The long term effects which might occur post mining are examined in relation to mitigation and management options.

Nickel WestÆs Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter operates three Peirce-Smith converters, each processing 110 tonnes of matte per charge. The vessels are lined with chrome-magnesia refractory with a mouth traditionally constructed from steel liner plates, protected with cast refractory. Mouth refractory is damaged by molten material and the action of cleaning solid buildup off the mouth. Once damage has accumulated, the mouth must be frequently maintained with hot refractory gunning or a mouth leak may occur. Such a leak requires a 32 hour repair period. A converter mouth redesign program was undertaken with the aim of reducing the rate of mouth damage during operation, eliminating mouth leaks and shortening mouth replacement times during vessel rebuild periods. An overview of the redesign process and operational performance is contained herein.

Safety remains a critical priority for the Australian mineral resource industry and will receive increased focus in the future. This is particularly evident in underground coal mines where reserves are becoming deeper and more hazardous to extract. The CSIRO, through its Exploration and Mining Division, have recently delivered on two projects aimed at providing step-change capabilities in real-time risk management and hazard control. This paper describes the key outcomes of these projects.

Erosion of unprotected batters, spoil banks, slopes, and stockpiled material creates a multitude of environmental problems. Winds blowing across these denuded surfaces can generate dust clouds capable of depositing un- desirable particulate material a considerable distance from the source. Water eroding these areas continually exposes new surfaces which may be oxidized. Iron pyrites can be dissolved in the flowing water, resulting in the addition of pollutants to streams and water sources. Silting of water sources can also occur as a result of this erosion. Valuable topsoil can be blown or washed away. In addition, the after-effects of erosion leave a visual pollution which is more difficult and expensive to correct than to prevent.

The competitive coal market has required coal producers to put more effort into coal quality control. Successful quality control requires a good estimation of the in situ coal quality as well as a good estimation of the probable fluctuation of the in situ coal quality during production. Geostatistics offers a very promising way to meet this requirement. A geostatistical approach toward the coal quality control problem is presented. Two models, the prediction model and the conditional simulation model, have been developed for coal quality data from two large export coal mines in central Queensland, Australia. The mine planning and scheduling aspects based on this and other potential applications of the models are addressed.

The fragmentation of whole rock by blasting has an influence on the subsequent loading, hauling and crushing operations. However, no method of calculating the frag- mentation has yet been developed. This paper gives a method of calculating the fragmen- tation for the simplest form of blasting, i.e. cratering. Cratering consists of the detonation of a spherical charge of explosive in a blasthole breaking to one free surface. This paper gives a method of calculating the extent of the system of radial cracks generated by the explosive in the rock. This system of radial cracks is then used to calculate the fragment size distribution curve from blasting. The calculated curves are shown to be in good agreement with experiment.

The cell volume and impeller speeds were reduced, and it is estimated that the power consumption for lead and zinc flotation will be reduced by about 2·8 kWh per ton of ore treated, and that substantial savings will be made in maintenance costs. The metallurgical efficien.cy of the operation has been maintained and attention is now being directed towards the improvement of grades of concentrates and recoveries of metals.INTRODUCTIONIt was on 1st August, 1934, that the first Denver No. 21 flotation cells were operated in the treatment plant of The Zinc Corporation Limited, in a pilot Nant which had been installed to determine the economics of all-flotation as against the then existing gravity and flotation practice.The ore being mined at that time came from the lead lode which consists of a granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, manganhedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, manganocalcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only.A parallel lode, known as the zinc lode, was well developed at that time. The common lead lode gangue minerals-calcite, rhodonite, bustamite-were rare in the underground exposures of the zinc lode. The Rosedale Outfall Project utilised an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) for only the second time in Auckland. Although the tunnel was excavated fully through East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF), the downhill gradient along with some unexpected areas of extreme water posed some significant challenges during construction.The Rosedale Waste Water Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel project was commissioned in response to the growing needs of North Shore City, New Zealand. The outfall tunnel comprises a 3 km long segmentally lined tunnel and a 2.1 km buried marine pipeline, and discharges 2.7 km offshore. The capacity of the new outfall is 6 m3/s compared to the existing outfall capacity of 1 m3/s.Following previous project experience, and with the tunnel located along its full length in the bedrock weak sandstone/siltstone bedrock of the East Coast Bays Formation, tunnelling conditions were expected to be benign. However during construction six high inflow events were encountered, including a full face (3.4 m diameter) of Albany Conglomerate over a 48 m length of tunnel. This material comprised cobbles in an uncemented sand matrix, and inflows were recorded at over 25 L/s.This paper describes the design challenges on the project including the design of a steel fibre reinforced segmental lining for internal pressures. The specification of the machine is discussed including the modifications required to enhance the risk mitigation measures already in place. The ground conditions encountered are discussed and have improved the knowledge of the range of conditions that can be expected in Auckland.Despite the challenges presented during construction, excellent progress rates were achieved and the tunnelling was successfully completed ahead of program.

The Zinifex Century Mine employs a large number of Detritor mills for fine and ultra-fine grinding to liberate silica and sphalerite at 80 per cent passing 7.5 microns before final zinc flotation. A joint project between CSIRO Minerals and the Zinifex Century Mine was carried out to evaluate the Detritor mill performance. Plant surveys were conducted around the Detritors in conjunction with laboratory tests. The survey data showed that the Detritors in the ultra-fine milling circuit performed well. They reduced a feed F80 sizing of 46 microns to a product P80 sizing of 7.5 microns at a gross energy consumption of 37.2 kWh/t. Scale-up of ultra-fine milling Detritors was studied using a 0.55 kW laboratory batch unit and a 355 kW full-scale Detritor by processing Century zinc concentrate with 1 mm sand media. The results indicated that the 0.55 kW laboratory mill underestimated the energy consumption of the full-scale Detritor by about 20 per cent for a product P80 of seven microns. The performances of a horizontal IsaMill and a vertical Detritor were compared as ultra-fine milling devices for processing Century zinc concentrate. The experimental data demonstrated that, when using the same grinding media, the energy efficiency of the two mills is similar despite the difference in mill designs. The Detritors used for regrind duty at the Century Mine performed poorly when processing feed at 80 per cent passing 88 micron. The energy consumption was high and the product size distribution was broad with particles above 100 microns in the feed unbroken and particles below ten microns overground. A coarser ceramic media of 3 mm was therefore tested in a laboratory Detritor to process the regrind Detritor feed as an alternative to the 1 mm Colorado sand used at the Century Mine. The ceramic media reduced the energy consumption significantly and produced a narrower product size distribution, which is more desirable for the downstream flotation process.

DEFINING AN ECONOMIC TARGETExploration usually begins with the corporate goal of finding a minimum tonnage and grade of a selected mineral. Sometimes this is expressed more simply as a minimum quantity of contained metal without any indication of the desired grade or implied profitability. Such a goal is useful in the selection of exploration areas and the planning of initial drilling programs. However, it should be reviewed as soon as significant mineralisation has been identified. To make rational decisions about exploration expenditure, the potential return from a deposit must be estimated from the outset and re-esti-mated frequently.The potential return will depend on:1. The proportion of mineral which can be economically recovered from the deposit by mining (the mining recovery).2. The quantity of valuable constituent that can be recovered after dilution with waste rock during mining and losses due to incomplete metallurgical recovery.3. Expectations of price and markets.4. Capital and operating costs applying to the selected mining and processing methods, and to transportation and marketing. Increasingly, environmental costs and constraints must also be considered.

Mine haul road design at Bougainville Copper Limited has undergone significant changes since mine start-up. Selection of 95 tonne trucks and the subsequent replacement by 155 tonne units is discussed, with particular reference to haul conditions within the mine. Changes to haul road design and construction practices are detailed which have lead to improved standards and tyre life. INTRODUCTION Bougainville Copper Limited operates one of the largest copper mines in the world at Panguna, Bougainville Island, in the North Solomons group of Papua New Guinea. The mine commenced commercial operation in April, 1972 and current planned production is 198 000 tonnes of material per day, of which 115 000 tonnes is ore averaging 0.46% copper. Annual total planned production is 72 000 000 tonnes to yield approximately 150 000 tonnes of copper with significant quantities of gold and silver. The mine operations workforce now consists of national employees up to General Foreman level.

The results expected from a longwall face can best be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the effective operating hours, and the utilisation.The effective operating hours are determined by a number of scheduling factors which include the proportion of manned time to calendar time, the effective shift factor (effective time to manned time) and the move times.Analysis of the results achieved on the last 121 completed longwall panels in Australia (1984 onwards) shows a significant trend between 'actual tonnes/manned hour' and 'ideal production rate' (the measure of the capacity of the installation).Using 1982 'state of the art' longwall equipment, (the average in use in the seven year period), it should be possible to produce around 2.7M tonne/year ROM from a mine with one longwall. Few mines are achieving this.A review of production scheduling factors and general natural hazards affecting some mines suggests three things.1. Whilst some increase in average effective hours has followed the CIT decision, further improvement is possible at many installations.2. Many mines subject to general natural hazards, such as high gas make and high general stress, have found effective solutions and achieve the same utilisation as the overall average.3. A small number of faces within such mines have been severely affected, some less so. The most severe effects of natural hazards appear to be very site specific. This emphasises the need for detailed investigation of the causes, and development of means of predicting their presence. Only then can either satisfactory technical solutions be found to overcome the problems or prior decisions be chosen not to mine badly affected panels.

Understanding the real utilisation of the available volumetric capacity of a conveyor is key to unlocking latent capacity or ‘debottlenecking’ existing plant. Conveyors are typically designed on the basis of conservative density and ore surcharge angle specifications, and consequently there is often latent volumetric capacity available.Laser scanning measurements of conveyor ore profiles has been undertaken on iron ore conveyors to gain an understanding of the actual surcharge angle and the available edge clearances. Iron ore producers seeking to extract maximum production from their assets have used these measurements to debottleneck existing plant and to revise the design criteria for future plant. The benefit is that latent capacity of existing plant can be unlocked and smaller and cheaper conveyors can be designed for future plant, maximising the return on capital. This paper presents an iterative net present value (NPV) maximisation method to determine the optimum surface to underground transition depth for an orebody to be mined by multiple open pits and an underground mine. The determination of transition depth from open pit to underground mining is based on global production scheduling optimisation of open pit and underground mines using mixed integer linear programming. The method is applied to a case study coming from a gold mining complex with six open pits and a large underground mine using longhole open stoping. The results indicate potential improvements of the NPV of global operations when compared to the traditional techniques based on independently optimised open pit first, followed by underground mining.CITATION:Dagdelen, K and Traore, I, 2014. The Central Extended Orebody is located within the Cracow Goldfield approximately 360 km northwest of Brisbane and approximately 220 km west of Bundaberg. It is an epithermal gold deposit hosted by the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Camboon Andesite. The lode was mined by open cut methods and produced 170 458 tonnes of ore at 5.62 g/t gold.The geology of the rit is relatively simple, comprising two rock types, trachyandesite and rhyolite which have been sub-divided into several units. The trachyandesite is sub-divided into three rock types: brecciated trachyandesite which is the most widespread, hydraulically fractured trachyandesite hosts the mineralisation and the third sub-unit is chloritised hydraulically fractured trachyandesite and has no associated mineralisation. The mineralisation is confined to quartz veins in hydraulically fractured trachyandesite. Several phases of brecciation and subsequent quartz and quartz/adularia vein injection are evident although not all phases are mineralised. Two rhyolite dykes intrude the trachyandesite one is monolithic, the other is sub-divided into hydraulically fractured rhyolite (barren), silicified rhyolite and auto-brecciated rhyolite.

CSIRO staff and University of Melbourne staff and students collaborated in an intense programme of investigation on the CSIRO 50 kg Sirosmelt pilot plant.In two days of operation copper matte converting and zinc slag fuming trials were performed, whilst investigation of the process dynamics and process chemistry was carried out. This exercise is an example of the techniques available for process evaluation, which can rapidly advance the understanding of pyrometallurgical operations by use of a team approach covering a wide range of experiments.

A statistical investigation of folding at Mount Isa disclosed similar patterns in both the shales and the "silica dolomite" zones. Analysis of these patterns yields 3 groups of folds fully developed north plunging folds, fully developed south plunging folds, and flexuresrepresenting stages of development of folds. Interpretation of results indicates that a regional force from a southerly direction was responsible for the folding.The general pattern of shearing is allied to that of folding, with the exception of bedding-plane shearing. Many shears resulted from continued application of force on folds which ruptured after overthrusting. Other shears resulted from rupture of the more incompetent shale members, without associated folding. The shear pattern is consistent with the theory of a regional force from a southerly direction.INTRODUCTIONThe notes on folding and shearing presented in this paper are part of a current study of the structural geology of Mount Isa.FOLDING 1Measurement of FoldsInvestigation of folding underground involved the measurement of plunge, strike and dip of the axial plane, and the order of magnitude of each fold, together with its location and the rock type. The total number of folds measured was 701, of which 411 occurred in shale areas and 290 within the "silica dolomite" zones. All folds measured are located on main levels, from 7 level to 13 level inclusive. The sections of the mine involved are the Black Star, Black Rock and Racecourse. Detailed investigation of folds on the upper levels (4, 5 and 6) has not yet been done, but observations there suggest...

Thiourea has been recognised for a long time as an acid-stable complexant for gold. Generally, the use of thiourea has been shown to exhibit enhanced leaching kinetics compared to cyanide but suffers the disadvantage of excessive reagent consumption. Thiourea leaching is particularly com- patible with the extraction of gold from refractory ores. This is due to the need for an oxidative pretreatment to liberate the gold. Such pretreatments typically result in the production of an acidic residue. The application of novel thiourea leaching technologies to the extraction of gold from a bioleached pyrite concentrate was investigated. The interac- tion of leach variables with thiourea consumption and gold extraction was established. An economic assessment of thiourea leaching was compared with conventional cyanidation. The results indicated that gold leaching of the bioleached residue using thiourea compared very favourably with cyanidation.

This study used structural equation modelling (SEM) to develop a series of models to explain the impact of work-life balance on employeesÆ perceptions of job performance, job satisfaction, turnover intentions and absenteeism. The sample comprised 257 participants (108 males and 149 females) from a range of occupations and levels of seniority. In sum, the results clearly demonstrated that successful work-life balance is associated with higher levels of job performance and worker satisfaction and with decreased levels of absenteeism and turnover intentions. The data also lent support to the impact of employeesÆ coping styles, schedule flexibility and supervisor support on employeesÆ abilities to balance work and life. It is concluded that tangible benefits to an employerÆs bottom-line can be anticipated from organisational initiatives to assist employees to better balance their work and personal lives.

The efficient operation of any modern metallurgical facility depends on the accurate measurement and estimation of flow rates, inventories, and composition of their intermediate and final products. All of this information is subject to both statistical errors and gross errors, which can lead to poor estimation of efficiency, yields and specific energy consumption. The detection and the elimination of these errors require not only plant data, but also product transactions and the operational events. Once the gross errors have been eliminated, it is possible to estimate validated performance indicators, such as grade recovery or yields. This paper describes the methodology to implement a unification and gross error detection system using the available infrastructure of both information and data reconciliation system. It covers the different infrastructure layers, from the data collection layer to the data validation and reconciliation layer. In addition, the impact of these methodologies on the decision-making process is presented.
