In the narrow stopes of South African gold mines, rockbreaking is carried out by drilling and blasting with safety fuse and igniter cord being used as the initiation system. The fuse/gniter cord system is used primarily because of its low cost, however several limitations of this method include: inaccurate delay time, unreliable firing, inflexible application to varied configurations, and the absence of dynamic interaction between holes. Alternative initiation systems that incorporate millisecond timing are being developed to overcome the limitations of fuse(tgniter cord systems. Current investigations by the Stoping Technology Division of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) into the effects of millisecond initiation are being conducted at a deep test site. Experimental blasts using various millisecond delays and the independent firing of holes with fuse/igniter cord are being studied in order to quantify the influence of delay time on the blasting process and to identify the best methods of applying millisecond initiation systems. The effect of design variables such as delay time, hole firing pattern, stemming, and panel layout are discussed. Blast results including throw distance and direction, muckpile profile and rock cleaning times are used in the discussion of different combinations of blasting variables.

The proximity of the Town of Kalgoorlie to the Mount Charlotte mine necessitates that charge weight per delay be limited in order to keep surface vibration levels within acceptable limits and to reduce damage to underground workings. The mining system requires that large mass blasts must be used to recover pillars and therefore a large number of separate delays are needed. Until recently all blasting has been done electrically, fired from mains, but with the introduction of large diameter blastholes (165mm diameter) this firing system was inadequate. Various firing systems were considered, but after extensive trials a non-electric sequential firing system was chosen. This system fulfilled all criteria of blast design, was relatively straight forward in charging technique and had a very simple primary initiation system. Although initially designed for large mass blasts, the non-electric firing system is now used for all large hole blasting and in a simpler form for small (57mn diameter) holes.

Vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) is the refining process used by ALZ (Genk, Belgium) for their production of stainless steels. The process consists of three stages: oxygen blowing at a pressure of 100 mbar, degassing, and reduction of the slag with ferrosilicon at 5 mbar. The magnesia-chromite bricks used in the slag zone of the ladles suffer from acute wear. In this paper results obtained from a program to improve the refractory life span are presented. The dominant wear phenomena were identified with an electron microscopy study of bricks taken from different locations in the ladle. Concurrently a dynamic model for the vacuum oxygen decarburisation (VOD) refining process was developed. The model calculates the elementsÆ oxidation rate during the blowing oxygen stage and allows the continuous calculation of the change of the metal, slag and gas composition throughout the VOD process. From these activities a general scheme of the refractory wear was worked out and measures to improve the refractory life were proposed and implemented.

The recent re-emergence of an Integral Pressure Stripping system which operates with both cell and column in closed circuit at elevated temperature and pressure, requires no cyanide in the eluate solution and has greatly reduced carbon reactivation requirements in seen as a progressive step in this area. Several of these re-configured IPS systems have been placed in service in Australia and overseas in the last three years, with the first of the new generation units constructed and commissioned by Como Engineers Pty. Ltd. at Mt. Fisher in the East Murchison of W.A. in September 1987. This plant was relocated to a new ore body at Darlot W.A. in February 1989. Use is made of a data base of raw plant performance figures from both Mr. Fisher and Darlot and its performance compared with other operating plants. Initial commissioning difficulties of the Mt. Fisher prototype and dis- cussed together with the modifications and operational procedures required to overcome these problems. Stripping times of less than 6 hours at 145 degrees have been achieved with barren carbon values less than l O ppm from loaded carbon values above 3000 ppm and with cell pass efficiencies reaching 90 per cent.

The article presents methods of testing and recording of water amount pumped out in surface mining. The authors describe necessary recommendations how to carry out measurements so that one can separate the surface run-off and groundwater inflow from the total inflow. They demonstrate methods of evaluation of these kinds of inflow in open pits when water amount testing is carried out every eight and 24 hours as well as simple methods when only monthly records of water are available. The authors also describe procedures for evaluating the water inflow when an open pit is dewatered gravitationally and measurements in discharge channels are irregularly carried out.

The Northern Beaches Storage Project (NBSP) is part of Sydney Water’s SewerFix™ Program to improve the wastewater system and protect public health and the environment. It was built by the SewerFix Wet Weather Alliance (the Alliance), a partnership between Sydney Water, RPS, MWH, Parsons Brinckerhoff and United Group Infrastructure.The project temporarily stores excess wastewater diverted from the Narrabeen Submain during wet weather. The project considered a below-ground storage facility, which involved constructing a deep tunnel from Brookvale to Fairlight, connecting into the Northside Storage Tunnel and a storage tank, which was subsequently adopted and constructed.The storage tank scheme included a pumping station and inlet and outlet pipes installed by microtunnelling. The storage tank site is in the Brookvale industrial area situated in an area of deep marine sediments overlying Hawkesbury Sandstone at about 30?m below ground. Microtunnelling for the inlet pipe was conducted from a 12?m deep jacking shaft. The jacking shaft and 14?m deep pumping station excavations were carried out from within secant pile earth retaining structures adjacent to existing buildings.Construction activities had the potential to cause settlement of the adjacent buildings. During excavation and microtunnelling the water ingress, adjacent groundwater level and settlement of the adjacent buildings were monitored. The monitoring data was assessed against an action plan, which modified construction activities as required to minimise the risk of damage to buildings from settlements caused by lowering of the groundwater table outside the excavations. The secant pile construction, excavation, microtunnelling and pumping station construction proceeded without incident or damage to adjacent buildings.This paper highlights that tunnel/underground options should be considered during options development, describes the original storage tunnel scheme and presents details of the successful microtunnelling and deep shaft construction adopted on the NBSP.CITATION:Taylor, N and Hewitt, P, 2014. The integration of digital twins in mining represents a significant advancement towards enhancing operational efficiency and decision-making. Central to this development is the role of visualisation, a crucial element in mining digitalisation. This paper aims to develop a data-driven visualisation solution for the construction of mining digital twins, highlighting how this innovation revolutionises the representation of physical mining environments. It spotlights the shortcomings of conventional visualisation methods, particularly their inability to accurately depict complex underground environments and their predominantly historical orientation. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel, data-driven approach. This approach extensively utilises CAD files, encompassing data from geological surveys to intricate mine plans, thereby significantly elevating the precision of digital twins. It supports real-time updates and enables flexible interaction with a variety of data types. Moreover, it introduces a comprehensive data diagram alongside the adaptation of a 3D tile index. This strategy ensures the efficient rendering of extensive mining environments, allowing for a more dynamic and interactive digital twin model. In conclusion, the implementation of data-driven visualisation in the construction of mining digital twins marks a pivotal advancement in the industry’s digital transformation. It promises a more detailed, accurate, and dynamic depiction of mining operations.

A wide variety of copper-bearing gold ores exist throughout the world which have yet to be processed economically for gold recovery. The copper minerals present in these ores can be many and varied and usually result in high cyanide consumptions and problematical levels of copper in leach solutions. The copper content is often assessed as being of nuisance value as the ores are generally of the grade or type which can support neither a copper project nor a straight gold project, due to the interference of copper. Many of these problematical gold-copper ores could possibly be processed economically for gold recovery using a novel ammoniacal cyanide leaching system which utilises a copper-ammonia-cyanide complex as an effective lixiviant for gold, yet limits copper dissolution and conserves cyanide. Results from recent testing have promoted a re-evaluation of the economics of treating some gold-copper ores. This paper describes the novel leaching process and discusses the conditions employed to treat a variety of gold-copper ores.

Nickel flotation circuits currently experience difficulties in recovering fine particles of pentlandite less than ten microns. By agglomerating these particles using shear-flocculation it is hoped to improve the recovery of these fine particles. A sample of massive sulphide ore from the Kambalda region was separated using magnetic separation to obtain a high grade pentlandite concentrate (> 90 per cent). This was finely ground to produce a sample with particles of 50 per cent minus 10 um in size. This sample was then shear-flocculated using a variety of reagents, including xanthates, dithiophosphate and mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT). The effects of reagent type and concentration, conditioning time, impeller speed and type, and pulp density were studied. Froth flotation tests were also conducted on the shear flocculated pulps to compare the effects of xanthate and MBT on the recovery of pentlandite.

The performance of prototype magnetic resonance sensors suited to mineral measurement in conveyor, slurry or portable applications is described. The sensors can be positioned around conveyors and modified slurry pipes, providing deep penetration of the sensing field, relative insensitivity to ore surface conditions and high mineral discrimination. Measurements on slurry, concentrates and ores sourced from mine operations are presented for two applications. Firstly, the quantitative measurement of chalcopyrite in slurry was demonstrated in laboratory measurements. In a calibration test, a standard error of 0.1 wt per cent and detection limit of 0.3 wt per cent was obtained. Secondly, results were obtained for the discrimination of iron ore texture. Signals were readily observed using measurement integration times of seconds to several minutes, depending on ore material. The results demonstrate the feasibility of online quantitative analysis of selected minerals in processing applications using magnetic resonance.

Structural Controls Interpretation of regional aeromagnetics, radiometrics and satellite image data has identified three structural domains (fig 2): The Fairyland Domain: a general N - S structural trend. The Cracow Domain: a general NW - SE structural trend. The Bald Mountain Domain: a general N- S structural trend. Known mineralisation is confined to the Cracow Domain in which there occurs two major NW - SE trending fault zones. The Cracow Fault Zone (CFZ) and the Immy Creek Fault Zone (ICFZ). Enhanced detail of the CFZ (fig 3) shows three main structural trends within it: NW-SE structures which include the mineralised White Hope South fault zone and the Golden Mile fault zone. NE-SW structures which have an influence on mineralisation in the Orange Creek, Fernyside and Golden Plateau areas. N-S structures comprising several major structural zones.

A brief test program was undertaken to assess the viability of air-sparged hydrocyclone beneficiation at the Cadjebut concentrator. Three different process streams were processed (lead rougher feed, lead scavenger tail and `mine water' solids) in a small scale ASH unit (one litre volume, feed rate 1000 to 1800 kg solids/hour). Analysis of the concentrates indicated that ASH based flotation was successful, selective and capable of achieving improvements to the overall metallurgical performance of the concentrator. The flow regime inside the device accentuates the selective flotation of the finest particle size ranges generally not recovered to any significant extent in conventional mechanical flotation devices. The testwork proved that the ASH is a viable alternative option for increasing the flotation capacity of the lead beneficiation stage of the Concentrator.

The Gold Fields Cerro Corona copper-gold deposit in Peru has heterogeneous rock characteristics in terms of its mineralogical, geological and geotechnical properties. Blast design variations in these conditions directly impact the run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation, which in turn influences downstream process efficiencies. In particular, when harder ore is processed, throughput and circuit performance may be limited.To evaluate the potential to increase throughput and improve overall plant performance by optimising blasting practices and comminution circuit operation, Gold Fields La Cima engaged Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) to conduct a full process integration and optimisation project at Cerro Corona. Blasting, crushing and grinding processes were reviewed to identify the potential to achieve substantial improvements in productivity when treating the most competent ore types.Site-specific models of the blasting, crushing and milling processes were developed using SmartTagTM ore tracking technology for calibration and validation. Ore tracking permitted locations in the blast volume to be queried against the geotechnical block model to determine the hardness and structural parameters of the feed to the comminution circuit. They also ensured surveys were conducted when ore from the audit blast was flowing through the crushing and grinding circuits.The predictive models developed enabled PTI to demonstrate how changes in blast design influenced both ROM fragmentation and the performance of downstream comminution processes. Outcomes of the project suggested changes to blast designs and comminution practices, and these were partially implemented for a validation trial. The trial demonstrated a 14.8 per cent increase in mill throughput for the specific ore selected for the study, and an average increase of 5.7 per cent for all ore types. There is potential to further increase throughput and process performance if all recommendations are implemented. Main geochemical problems concerning the environment and mining industry interrelation are connected with the transformation of natural water chemistry by mining wastes. The investigation of many mines in Primorye, the southern part of the Russian Far East, showed that their mining waters have high concentrations of heavy metals and aluminium. Water acidity is primarily connected with the amount of acid-forming sulphide minerals in ores and also depends on the neutralising capacity of rocks. Considerable quantity of metals occur in the waters in dissolved form. Metal concentrations in mining waters exceeds the natural levels by 2-5 orders of magnitude and can't be reduced to the background levels even after multiple dilution. It is necessary to develop and put into practice new technologies so that to reduce the geochemical impact upon the environment.

Elastomeric compression gaskets for segmental tunnel liners are capable of fulfilling all sealing requirements for one pass constructed tunnels.Once the segments are mounted and the gaskets are compressed the watertightness of the tunnel is guaranteed at once and for the whole technical life time.The only prerequisite for effective sealing is that tolerances in the tunnel segments be kept within reasonable limits.

Perilya Broken Hill, from its inception, has budgeted for more than 2.0 million tonnes per year from the Southern Operations. This tonnage was planned to come from in excess of 100 stopes per year in a remnant mining environment with numerous mined voids and consequent mining challenges. To mine an average of two stopes per week requires patience, flexibility and detailed knowledge to best manage the potential risks and hazards. The evolution of the Perilya Broken Hill Mine Planning Process has necessitated the establishment of a process to identify and manage these risks during the planning stage in a reliable but efficient manner. This process is to ensure that vital steps for each stope are not missed, and that each personÆs work can be tracked by other members of the team. This paper outlines the planning process from resource to stope closure.

The goal of the Bureau of Mines, U. S. De- partment of the Interior, diesel engine research program is to reduce exhaust emissions and mini- mize the risk of fires and explosions caused by the use of diesel-powered equipment in under- ground mines. Significant results of research conducted during the last 5 years are briefly described, with references to published reports on specific topics. Topics covered here include brief discussions of a newly completed diesel research laboratory, the effects of a fuel addi- tive on diesel exhaust particulate matter, the effect of diesel engine maintenance on emis- sions, a diesel particulate filter for equipment used in underground metal and nonmetal, and coal mines, and lastly, the prototype hydrogen- powered mine vehicle. These research accomplishments could favor- ably affect the mining industry by reducing the health and safety hazards associated with the use of diesel-powered equipment in underground Mines.

Froth flotation processes use different surface properties of the minerals to be sorted. In an aqueous environment the hydrophobic mineral attaches selectively to air bubbles and is lifted to the surface of a separation vessel, while the tailings settle towards its bottom. Besides the surface properties, the hydrodynamic conditions play an important role. With respect to the hydrodynamics the flotation process can be divided, for simplicity, in two sub-processes. The attachment of hydrophobic particles to air bubbles, the so-called mineralisation, demands a large number of collisions and therefore high turbulences. The phase separation however needs a deterministic movement of both the particle-bubbles-aggregates and the tailings particles and therefore a quiescent flow field. The optimisation of the overall process requires a separation of both sub-processes, especially when fine particles have to be sorted. In conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells both sub-processes take place in the same turbulent volume. For this reason they suffer from a decreasing selectivity with decreasing particle size. In flotation columns the mineralisation of air bubbles and the phase separation are performed in a quiescent environment. This results in high concentrate grades and at the same time in a very slow attachment kinetics, which must, especially for fine particles, be counterbalanced by a long residence time of the slurry.

To establish the design and the capacity of the Stanwell Magnesium Plant, Australian Magnesium Corporation Ltd (AMC) with Fluor Australia has modelled the operation of the magnesium plant using ARENA Simulation Modelling. The reliability model has been used to evaluate: surge capacities required between different sections of the plant; critical equipment requiring standby capacity; the number of trains required for different sections of the plant; and potential capital cost reduction options. The reliability model was established using the detailed Process Flow Diagrams, reliability information from literature and maintenance, operation and start-up experience from the Demonstration Plant. The model was run with different plant configurations to assist AMC in determining the most effective configuration to provide the production capacity at the lowest capital cost. The model was not only able to confirm the plant capacity to the independent technical expert but was able to minimise quantitative risk by minimising the quantities of hazardous materials on site. Fluor Australia provided the ARENA simulation expertise and has used this software for optimising new plant design and to establish improvements in operating plants. Reliability modelling is a normal feature of chemical plant design but is rarely used in the resource industry. The experience gained by AMC in the modelling system has indicated that metallurgical plant design can be improved by the application of reliability modelling.
