TO measure high temperature properties of blast furnace burdens ( the change of gas permeability accompanied by contraction, soft- ening and melting ) which govern the gas flow and its distribution, a series of experiments were carried out under simulated blast furnace conditions, using sinter, acid pellets and self -fluxing pellets. 1) The high temperature properties are affected by the ore's reducibility ( up to 1000 -1200¦C ), and the composition, and volume of gangue before reduction. Generally, the burde- ns with high basicity ( Ca0/Si02 ), high reduc- ibility and low volume of gangue have good high temperature properties. Good high temperature properties are : a high temperature at which the gas permeability rapidly decreases, a high melting point and a low maximum pressure drop. 2) Using acid pellets, slow-down of red- uction rate occurs around 1000¦C because the pellet forms a dense metallic shell, while its slag core, resulting from a FeO, Si02 and A1203 reaction, has a lower melting point. 3) The addition of MgO sources improves high temperature properties both of sinter and Pellets.

Predictive chemical models facilitate the selection, design and assessment of aqueous chemical processes. The development of expertise in aqueous themochemistry has not matched the explosion in computer technology for modelling, which has placed pressure on the need for acquisition of skills to critically assess the appropriateness of the models produced. The 'blind faith' culture which appears to be developing must be arrested by appropriate programs at the tertiary level and professional development strategies in the minerals industry.

Previous methods for the assessment of the explosive potential of gas mixtures have required the plotting of apeexplosibility diagram. These became cumbersome if a large -number of assessments of various sampling locations over a period of time wererequired. This may make the approach of a dangerous situation more difficult to predict. With the aid of a programmable calculator, a new method for the rapid assessment of the explosibility of coal mine sample gases has been developed. This method does not require that an explosibility diagram be drawn to indicate the explosive status of a gas mixture. Simple Cartesian co-ordinates representing the explosive potential of,mixtures are obtained, which may readily be plotted to show changes with time.

The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

In recent years, wide consideration has had to be given to methods of improving the condition of the mine environment in many coal mines, and significant developments and changes have evolved. Thus even after substantial increases inòair flow rates at the working place (they have increased over three fold in the last generation), environmental conditions have arisen for which it has been necessary to introduce or consider: i) additional ameliorative measures, such as good housekeeping; ii) layout changes: such as Y or Z layouts; iii) homotropal ventilation; and iv) air conditioning. Human habitation of the Pacific Rim began when mankind began migrations out of its place of origin in the Rift Valley of Central Africa c. 4million years ago. This migration was erratic and largely controlled by advances and retreat of the various Ice Ages which, while limiting advances in areas of intense cold, at the same time aided migration thro-ugh the creation of land bridges as ocean levels declined during periods of glacial advance (Fig.l).Mankind began its trek to the Pacific from Africa across India then north into southern China and south into Indonesia (Fig.2). In part, these migrations stimulated early technological develop-ments to fulfill needs and adapt to environmental conditions; thus, these nomads developed stone and bone tools, animal skin clothing and the use of caves and other simple shelters. The earliest evid-ence of mankind's use of fire can be found at Zhou-koudaian near Beijing, c.400,000 BP.From China, the completion of the Pacific Rim's population can be attributed to the last Ice Age that dropped the ocean level by more than 300 feet and created land bridges about 40,000 BP allowing migration across the Bering Strait into Alaska and to Australia from Indonesia. The American migration reached Mexico about 30,000 BP, and by 6000 BP the occupancy of the Pacific Rim was complete when the first human settlers reached the southern tip of Chile.

A continuing demand for exploration geologists, at a level well below that during the mineral "boom" of 1967-1971, will be highly selective. The exploration geologist must be more than the traditional geologist whose primary function has been detailed description of rocks and their recording on a geological map. He must be capable of 1. reconnaissance recognition of favour= able environments for ore mineral concentrations, 2. application and interpretation of techniques of search and evaluation, and 3. evaluation of economic, technological and political interactions that combine to make an ore deposit. Universities have an obligation to their students to provide them with a saleable skill, to educate them so that they can cope profess- ionally and socially, and to provide a mechan- ism by which education can be a continuing process. Humanistic and social studies, develop ment of communication skills, understanding of economic and management principles, ability to assess rock properties that influence extract- ion and beneficiation, and a knowledge of technological developments and limitations are necessary parts of the exploration geologist's

In China, the State-run mines are currently practising an information card management system, to collect data about mine production and safety condition. Since large volumes of data will be obtained every day, efficiently and effectively processing data and sorting out valuable information will take enormous resources of manpower, if by hand. Therefore, an intelligent database system with easy data inputting was developed to assist information processors in data classifying, filing and retrieving. For analyzing and improving production performances, reliability models and production functions were embodied. The system was implemented on AST-286 in DBASE M. Preliminary applications have proved effective and successful.

Since the introduction of the Neil George Five Point Safety System, to the underground sections of The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines in March, 1969, the Disabling Injury Frequency Rate has been halved and shows signs of contin- uing to fall. The total accident frequency rate has also fallen, although the decrease has not been as significant. Before the introduction of the Neil George Safety System, analyses of the direct causes of accidents showed that approx- imately 25 per cent were caused by "unsafe conditions", while 75 per cent were attribu- table to "unsafe acts". Within twelve months of introducing the system, these percentages had significantly changed to 7 per cent unsafe conditions and 93 per cent unsafe acts. Today, the figures are 3 per cent and 97 per cent respectively, and these figures clearly show that the main emphasis in the current programme must be directed towards making the operating men safety conscious. The effort must be focused on changing the minds of men.
