Debswana, owned by the Government of the Republic of Botswana (GRB) and De Beers in a 50:50 joint venture partnership, operates the Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana - the most valuable diamond mine in the world. The mine provides between 60 - 70 per cent of DebswanaÆs earnings, and about 30 - 40 per cent of the GRBÆs income. In 2008, the company embarked on the Cut 8 Project - an open pit waste cut-back to expose more diamond bearing ore to sustain mine life by another six to seven years. This undertaking was much larger than previous cut-backs; it increased the waste stripping ratio threefold, increasing significantly the waste handling fleet of trucks, shovels and infrastructure, and impacted a large part of the materials handling plant which required replacement with new facilities. The project coincided with the beginning of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and a slowdown in the economy. Its $4 billion total life cost was billed as æthe largest private investment project in BotswanaÆ which produced heightened expectations amongst stakeholders that it would redress some of the issues brought about by the GFC and leave behind a legacy of jobs, increased opportunities for citizen owned business and improved social infrastructure.Most of the big project challenges were non-technical and ranged from dealing with various stakeholders?at?all levels, a 25 per cent currency depreciation of the Botswana Pula against the South African Rand, obtaining work permits for non-citizens in a job starved environment, managing construction to world class safety standards, managing the low productivity of construction workers and producing a viable legacy program that satisfied the GRB and stakeholders. Whilst most of these risks were identified in front end studies, the magnitudes were in many instances underestimated. Managing this uncertainty on Cut 8 can provide valuable lessons to other projects in a similar environment, or at least provide the information to indicate that these factors should be adequately provided for in the financial evaluation of a project in the form of budget, schedule, contingency or risk mitigation.CITATION:Jones, G M and J Rademan, 2012. The Grey River dredge is the first large scale alluvial operation to be permitted under the Mining Act 1971 and the Water and Soil Conservation Act 1967. The experience of Grey River Gold MiningLimited in pursuing these statutory approvals has identified weaknesses and strengths in the present system and problems which need to be resolved. The Company has learnt lessons, which if heeded, will assist future large scale alluvial mining projects.

Geological data provides the foundations for the mining value chain. It is used to underpin the modelling and planning and consequently optimise downstream business decisions. However, it is often forgotten or taken for granted. End users often assume the data to be sound without verification. Geological data can be considered a company’s number one asset. Subsequently, the storage, use and management of this data need careful curation and time invested in preserving and protecting it. An established polymetallic mine with 20 000 drill holes could have a data replacement value in excess of $500M at 2020 prices, excluding labour and salary costs. The Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the ‘JORC Code’) provides guidelines for Public Reporting. Within the code, Table 1 requires discussion around the different types of geological data, its collection and use. What is needed is additional details regarding the validation and integrity of the geological database. A comprehensive guideline specifying minimum geological standards for geological databases has been developed. This expands on the critical points outlined in Table 1 of the JORC Code. This guideline can be used by companies where geological databases are managed in-house or used to assess these services’ outsourcing. This guideline will ensure that geological data is reliable and unadulterated and can be used with confidence. Using this guideline will assist in preserving the investment of geological data in the mining value chain

This paper is dedicated to the memory of our friend Peter McKenzie who contributed much to the knowledge of the New South Wales Coalfields.ABSTRACTA fossil river system was recently mapped over parts of the Southern Coalfield, N.S.W. This river system occurs in the roof strata of the Bulli Seam. Sandstone of a fluvial nature was deposited in its course. The sandstone exhibits strong sedimentary vectorial properties and has a marked influence on strata-control in colliery workings.The sedimentary features analysed indicate an approximate S200W flow direction. Petrological studies reveal a clastic, well-cemented sedimentologically and structurally anistropic rock type. Washouts have been found and isopach maps of both sandstone and underlying roof-strata have been compiled. Relevant measurements were carried out in existing colliery workings and on bore cores.Optical determinations of feldspars revealed the presence of plagiocIase feldspars with few exceptions. Most of the feldspars are altered to clay minerals. It was found that a geographical trend exists in the distribution of feldspars, with more basic plagioclase in the northern part of the field.The source area of the fluvial sandstone lies to the north of the Southern Coalfield.Petrofabric analyses were done on several specimens of the fluvial sandstone. In the vicinity of major disturbances, penetrative fabrics were discovered.Calcites (e, 0112), micas (001), and quartz (crystalIo graphic c) show preferred orientations.

The question of prediction and prevention of dynamic events û rock bursts (RB), tectonic rock burst (TRB) and mining-induced earthquakes (MIE), induced by large-scale mining, are discussed. The mine itself and the host geological environment are taken as a natural-technical system (NTS) whose evolution is characterised by alteration of the adaptation-bifurcation (catastrophes) periods. So, to predict TRB-MIE means to predict the limiting NTS states that are determined from the NTS geological monitoring data, and to prevent the said events means to control the processes of rock deformation and failure within the critical zone. The study considers particular examples of how TRB-MIE-events are predicted and prevented in apatite mines, Kola peninsula, Russia.

Major mining projects are developed with the assistance of lending institutions who provide hundreds of millions of dollars in funding over several years, and of course expect those funds to be returned with interest. Two Australian banks have adopted the Equator Principles, an emerging financial industry benchmark for assessing and managing environmental and social risk in project financing. Project financiers have encountered environmental and social issues that are both complex and challenging, particularly with respect to projects in the emerging markets of Asia-Pacific and elsewhere. There are many recent and historical examples of failures by resource companies to effectively manage their environmental, social, safety and security risks, some of which have caused the project to fail completely, and some of which have caused the temporary cessation of production. These events put the financial institutionsÆ funds at risk through inadequate management capacity and non-compliance adversely affecting the ability of the borrowers to repay the loans. They can also reflect adversely on the reputation of the lending institutions. In assessing these risks, lenders are increasingly looking at the track record of the borrower in its country of origin and in other countries where it operates. Lenders are wary of companies that have one standard for operations in a developed country, where the regulatory environment may tightly control what they do, and another standard for operations in countries where the regulatory regime is perhaps less stringent. Lenders may require environmental and social reviews or audits to be conducted on their behalf by competent third parties prior to a loan being approved, and annually over the life of the relationship. The mining industryÆs concept of the unwritten æsocial licence to operateÆ is highly relevant in relation to the delivery of community benefits that are sustainable post-mine closure. This paper provides examples of recent practices that support financial viability and sustainable development, as well as examples of some failures that have put lenders at risk.

The key goals for mine site rehabilitation require mine managers to demonstrate that rehabilitation is safe, stable, self-sustainable and non-polluting. Within this context, it is reasonable for stakeholders to expect that mine site rehabilitation is resilient to disturbance impacts such as fire and drought. However, mine managers actively avoid fire on rehabilitation; and as a result have limited understanding of fire behaviour on revegetated landforms, the long term implications for site stability and the potential risk to site relinquishment. An experimental fire that was conducted at the Curragh Mine site in May 2015, burnt 117 ha of 19- to 21-year old mine site rehabilitation, mimicking wildfire conditions and creating a mosaic of fire impacts across the landform. Using a combination of ground surveys and remote sensing assessments, we demonstrate that over a two year period, ecological metrics such as species richness, woody density and understorey biomass all recover to pre-fire levels for both grassland and open woodland areas. This is supported by WorldView-3 satellite imagery and the remote sensing assessment using the differenced Normalised Differenced Vegetation Index (dNDVI) which shows high regrowth within the burn area in 12- and 24-month image captures. The results suggest that within the recorded conditions, this site is resilient to fire impacts, and has the capacity to recover to pre-fire levels within the first two years following the fire.CITATION:McKenna, P, Erskine, P D, Phinn, S, Glenn, V and Doley, D, 2018. Prospectivity, the relative value of gold, investor confidence, general economic stability and legislation driven by public attitudes are seen as the major influences on the gold mining industry in New Zealand. Since the 1860s the gold mining industry in New Zealand has been subject to the complex interaction of these influences resulting in three successive boom and bust periods. The booms are related to periods of greatest potential economic growth. The busts are more strongly related to downturns in the economy and falling gold price. The influences may be expressed as trends over time. The role of gold has changed from being a currency base to that of a traded commodity. This change has caused price instability and rapid fluctuations in its value. Increased competing land uses, shifting public attitudes and legislative changes have added to the instability of the industry. Reaction against change is to be expected from the companies until new legislation is seen to be functioning efficiently. Other trends show that there has been a tendency towards reduced exploration and consolidation of active gold mining projects. The future consequences of this are likely to be felt both regionally and nationally as there will be no new discoveries to fill production voids which will develop as currently producing mines close. The review of New Zealand's resource use statutes is nearly complete. A period of legislative stability can now be expected. There are some positive signs that consents will be obtained much more quickly than under previous legislation, particularly by those companies which develop the skills to work with the system. The new regime is about consideration of impacts rather than specific activities. This, together with excellent prospectivity, bodes well for the identification of mineral resources in New Zealand.

The Merlin project is situated 130 km south of Cloncurry in North West Queensland, Australia. It is located within the Pre-Cambrian Mt Isa Inlier and is grouped within the Eastern Fold Belt. The host rocks are metasedimentary rocks of the Proterozoic Kuridala and Staveley Formations adjacent to the Mount Dore Granite.Merlin zone represents part of the Mount Dore polymetallic deposit containing copper, zinc, silver, gold, lead, cobalt and most recently has been found to host molybdenum mineralisation. This is intimately associated with economic grades of rhenium, a naturally occurring metal that is an important component of high temperature aircraft engines. The host rock sequence is a 200 m thick zone of metasediments sandwiched between competent granite in the hanging wall and brittle quartzite in the foot wall. A distinct shear marks the contact between the granite and metasediments. The host rocks are comprised of three main rock types: black shale, phyllite and altered banded calc-silicate.Mineralisation dips to the east at approximately 45° in a package of fine grained pelites and banded calc-silicates. The top 150 m of the sequence is typified by black shale and phyllite. The lower 50 m is typified by pink banded calc-silicate. The main molybdenite zone is located at and parallel to the pelite-calc-silicate contact. Down dip, the zone splits into two or three veins hosted by the calc-silicate rock suite and haloed by thin, steep dipping, stylolitic molybdenite veinlets.The deposit was discovered in 2008 by routine infill reverse circulation sampling conducted for the Mount Dore copper deposit. One hole penetrated below the main target Cu horizon and intersected visible molybdenite. During 2009 and 2010 a 50 × 50 m diamond drill pattern delineated a total mineral resource of 6.7 Mt @ 1.3 per cent Mo, 23g/t Re, 0.3 per cent Cu (mostly Indicated Mineral Resource with minor Inferred Mineral Resource). The resource has been estimated using ordinary kriging within grade domains. Access to the deposit has commenced via a decline and production through the nearby Osborne flotation concentrator (70 km south) is expected in 2012. All facilities and resources are fully owned and operated by Ivanhoe Australia Limited, a public listed company on the Australian and Toronto stock exchanges.

Column flotation cells have been installed in numerous base metal operations around the world. The majority of these cells utilise conventional air-only spargers to introduce air into the bottom of the column. The recent development of instruments to measure the bubble characteristics in these columns has provided a renewed understanding of column behaviour. These new tools provided insight into why the columns at Red Dog Mine had never performed up to expectations. After efforts to optimise the spargers failed to substantially change the bubble size and air efficiency, alternate sparger systems were investigated. The Metso Minerals CISA Microcel sparger system appeared promising and was selected for a full-scale plant trial. The Microcel sparger system was originally developed for the coal industry at the Virginia Centre for Coal and Minerals Processing. In October 2003, a Microcel was retrofitted into one of two 3.66 m diameter flotation columns in the zinc retreat circuit at Red Dog Mine. The operation of the two different sparger systems in parallel allowed a detailed comparison. This paper discusses the performance of the Microcel based on the data collected during several detailed surveys. Bubble size measurements carried out in the pulp zone using the McGill University bubble viewer showed a significant difference in bubble size. The mean Sauter diameter of the bubbles decreased from 3.4 mm for the jetting-type sparger to 1.9 mm for the Microcel sparger. The overall recovery and the recovery by size fraction for both valuable and gangue minerals were compared. Paired t-tests demonstrated that the Microcel column produced a higher concentrate grade (0.6 per cent zinc absolute) and a higher unit recovery (2.8 per cent zinc absolute) than the existing Canadian Process Technologies Inc (CPT) SlamJet column. These improvements provided a payback period of 1.5 months for the $109 000 investment.

The role of marketing in the development of a new project will be affected by political, commercial and technical pressures. Marketing success will be determined by the ability to predict and react to tomorrow's environment. In the Australian coal industry there is an emerging transition from production to marketing orientation. As a result, greater technical awareness of customer needs will be required. In particular, the industrial product nature of coal markets will need to be recognised. Greater attention will also need to be paid to product options and quality in mine planning. Marketing personnel will become more involved at every phase of the development of a new mine.

Within the last decade, major research discoveries have been made in the submarine realm of magmatic and hydrothermal activity of arc-backarc systems in the southwestern Pacific. These include identification of numerous particulate-poor, gas-rich (CO2-CH4) hydrothermal plumes emanating from arc front volcanoes, actively forming porphyry-copper-gold style mineralisation, and new backarc spreading systems erupting alkali basalt-trachyandesite magmas. Major goals of these studies have been identification of modern analogs to ancient volcanogenic massive sulfide ore bodies, and quantification of the volatile fluxes though supra-subduction zone systems.

The Kempfield deposit is located in the Hill End Trough, one of several intracratonic basins developed during Silurian–Devonian time, in the eastern province of the Lachlan Orogen, Eastern Australia.The deposit contains an oxide resource of 5.8 Mt @ 58 g/t Ag and a sulfide resource of 14.4 Mt @ 45 g/t Ag, 1.7 per cent Zn and 0.6 per cent Pb, classified and reported in compliance with the JORC Code. The deposit has been previously explored by a number of companies, including INCO, Shell, Jones Mining, Golden Cross Resources and recently Argent Minerals Ltd (Argent). Argent is currently completing a definitive feasibility study with a view to mining the deposit.The deposit is hosted at the boundary between the Molong High to the west, comprising Ordovician sediments and volcanic rocks and the Hill End Trough to the east, interpreted as a back-arc basin containing Silurian sediments and siliceous-feldspathic volcanic rocks. The boundary between these two strato tectonic units is an imbricate thrust fault zone known as the Copperhannia Thrust.The Kempfield deposit is hosted in felsic volcanic rocks known as the Kangaloolah Volcanics. These have been in-faulted and folded into the Middle Ordovician meta-sediments of the Coombing Formation of metasediments along the Copperhannia Thrust. The Kangaloolah Volcanics belong to the Late Silurian Mumbil Group, comprising submarine carbonate-shale facies interspersed with extensive felsic volcanic piles, which grade conformably upwards into turbiditic sandstone and siltstone sequences (interpreted to represent a deeper depositional environment). These turbiditic rocks are known as the Campbells Formation, comprising siltstone, sandstone and andesitic tuff. The rocks at Kempfield are metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies, reflected through the different type of schists.Silver, gold, lead, zinc mineralisation is hosted in barite-rich horizons, near the boundary to quartz-phyric tuffaceous rocks in submarine, immature, reworked felsic ash tuffs. Barite appears to be hosted in greatest concentrations by the coarser grained volcanoclastic sandstones and grits, whilst intercalated siltstones are volumetrically minor and tend to return low barite and silver. Mineralisation is hosted in stratiform and probably stratabound barite-rich horizons. A northeast-trending, steeply dipping, metamorphic cleavage (S1) occurs throughout the project area.

Sun Metals Corporation Pty Ltd (SMC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Korea Zinc Co Ltd (KZC) is a company formed to develop, construct and operate a zinc refinery, 11 km south of Townsville in North Queensland. The project opportunity exists because of on-going consumption growth for refined zinc metal, technological, environmental and economic obsolescence of existing zinc processing plants, and a prolonged ædroughtÆ of new zinc processing capacity under construction. The Project will utilise proven technology developed by KZC at the Onsan refinery in Korea. The Townsville Refinery has been designed to be the most environmentally-friendly zinc refinery in the world, and in particular to resolve the issue of secure, long term treatment of the ironbearing content of the zinc raw materials.

The discovery and delineation of significant mineralisation in the Eliwana region continues Fortescue Metals Group’s strong exploration success. In the decade after the first hole was drilled into Christmas Creek in mid-2004 a total of over 11 Bt of hematite-goethite mineralisation have been delineated supporting the raising of $13 B, construction of five mines, 620 km of rail and a five-berth port. As of June 2014, Fortescue was shipping at the rate of 155 Mt/a. The area including the Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits is one of a number of future growth opportunities that Fortescue is currently evaluating.The Eliwana and Flying Fish deposits occur on the south dipping limb of the Brockman Syncline/Jeerinah Anticline. The Eliwana group of deposits are hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation with the Flying Fish/Broadway group hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation.Structurally the area is dominated by moderate southerly dips of the regional dome and keel style folding. The regional limb is locally cross-cut at a small angle by asymmetric north facing Ophthalmian folds trending 110°. These fold sets, in part, preferentially host subsequent supergene mineralisation. Faulting is only locally apparent.Early phases of exploration commenced in 2006, with mapping of Flying Fish and reconnaissance drilling in 2007. However, due to the concurrent discovery (Clarke et al, 2009) and subsequent fast tracked development of Solomon channel iron deposit and Firetail bedded iron deposit (Simpson et al, 2011) priority was placed on developing Solomon due to its relative proximity to existing Fortescue infrastructure. Staged follow-up drilling of both Marra Mamba and Brockman targets at Eliwana was progressively undertaken from 2008 onward.As of 20 May 2014 a total of 1494 reverse circulation (RC) holes for 54 248 m and 13 diamond holes had been completed, resulting in the delineation of a Mineral Resource of 740 Mt. The banded iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits located in the Hamersley Ranges of Western Australia contain marker shales that are used to distinguish lithology for geological and orebody mapping. These marker shales produce distinctive signatures in the natural gamma downhole logs, which are conventionally manually interpreted. This paper proposes an alternative method of automatically identifying these shales using dynamic time warping (DTW). A Gaussian processes (GPs)-based method for automatic identification is also considered. Both methods are tested on a deposit that contains the Marra Mamba sequence of the Hamersley Province.Both methods were trained to predict the location of the desired shales, and the resulting outputs were compared with a manual interpretation of the results to determine the accuracy. The GP method can identify signatures with an accuracy between 87.0 per cent and 92.0 per cent, which increases to 92.9 per cent and 95.7 per cent where the GP is certain. The DTW method has an accuracy between 90.0 per cent and 91.6 per cent, which increases to 94.0 per cent and 95.4 per cent where the DTW is certain.The GP method has several advantages, including a more automated library building process, a probabilistic output and a shorter run time. However, the DTW method was capable of accepting more distortion in the signature and therefore identified more signatures. This is important in a deposit where the signals are frequently distorted by events such as hydration and folding. Both methods provide a viable alternative to the current manual detection, but their differences make them applicable to different cases.CITATION:Silversides, K and Melkumyan, A, 2014. In May 2018 Kasbah Resources Limited (“Kasbah”) completed an ore sorting test work program which was a precursor to releasing in July 2018 an updated Definitive Feasibility Study (“DFS”) for the Achmmach Tin Project in Morocco, which it is proposing to develop along with its joint venture partners. The testwork program evaluated ore sorting as a pre-concentration option to achieve early elimination of gangue and the low-grade component of ROM feed, thereby potentially:  Significantly upgrading the head grade of tin to the downstream processing plant.  Significantly reducing the required throughput capacity (and projected capital expenditure) of the downstream processing plant.  Reducing total consumables, power and water requirements in downstream processing.  Increasing the recovery of tin in the gravity and flotation circuit due to the higher feed grade achievable with ore sorting.  Reducing tailings tonnage, tailings cost and environmental footprint.  Using sorter rejects for mine backfill or road base applications. Key aspects of the design of the metallurgical testwork program centred around the need to ensure that samples representative of ROM ore feed (including projected mining dilution) were selected for the ore sorting testwork. The design and implementation of the ore sorting bulk testwork program is described, as well as a summary of the test work results and a discussion of the enhancement of the project economics reported by Kasbah, which led the company to adopt ore sorting as part of the proposed processing circuit in the updated 2018 DFS.

Every mine will close! Charting a profitable course through mine operations to acceptable mine completion requires that risk and opportunity management planning of the mine life begin as early as possible in the life cycle. Management targets and metrics are required to identify and navigate the course to successful mine completion based on economic, social and environmental criteria. This paper outlines the application of The Metrics NavigatorÖ principles to the life cycle of a mine site. In general, metrics are required to make key strategic ideas apparent, transforming those ideas into a manageable set of quantitative measures that guide communication and decision making. For example, the chemical industry has established metrics that focus on the life cycle impacts of its products and eco-efficiency of their processes. Other industry sectors have focused attention on workplace and community well-being outcomes. These management metrics are necessarily organisation-specific, aligned to stakeholdersÆ expectations and the strategic outcomes sought, as well as the cause-and-effect relationships underlying key issues. Recently, the Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI), a consortium of multi-national companies, developed The Metrics NavigatorÖ. The guidance document provides a structured process for assessing and developing metrics for key environmental, social, and economic issues based on business and stakeholder perspectives. It incorporates best practices learned from the chemical and other industry sectors and has since been applied to develop metrics that guide life cycle strategies. The paper examines how the life cycle of a mine site could benefit from experiences in other industry sectors where sustainability metrics have guided strategy. It considers the potential application of The Metrics NavigatorÖ process to the life cycle of a hypothetical Australian mine site using the processes that have been successful in other industry sectors.

A breaker line support (BLS) monitoring system, BLSmon, has been designed and constructed by the CSIRO and installed and commissioned at Laleham No.] Colliery, Queensland. This system was designed to record hydraulic leg pressure and canopy position measurements and relay these, in real time, to the surface. The system has shown itself to be capable of operating on the BLSs without any adverse affect on production. Analysis of the results of the monitoring exercise has shown that rate of change of leg pressures on the BLSs could be used as an aid in the prediction of adverse mining conditions. Under favourable mining conditions the supports were observed to initially unload from the set pressure, this unloading reduced with time and by the end of a typical lift cycle had either ceased or reversed slightly. This behaviour was considered to be due to one of four possible causes, these being; the compaction of floor debris, and/or compaction of the floor, and/or crushing of the roof and /or support creep. The actual cause can only be determined through detailed monitoring of both roof and support convergence. However observational data would suggest that compaction of debris and softened floor material beneath the supports was the most likely cause. The few positive loading rates recorded under these conditions were of short duration and occurred towards the end of individual lifts. Where mining conditions were unfavourable the negative rates of change of pressure, unloading of the support, were reduced throughout a lift, in both duration and magnitude, when compared with favourable mining conditions. Over the same period the positive rates of change were observed to be greater. The rate of change of loading and convergence can be utilised to identify the onset of instability in the lift area. However, before this facility can be utilised by the mine for the reliable prediction of instability more monitored data and sophisticated processing techniques are required.
