The story of the Penjom gold mine located near Kuala Lipis on the Malay Peninsular demonstrates the valuable role successful exploration companies can play in the development of the gold mining industry. Avocet Mining PLC ('Avocet') began exploration in the area on a limited budget in 1989, securing land tenure around the Penjom alluvial workings in July 1990. The lease granted, known as Block 7, formed part of a land package offered at the time by the Pahang State Government to develop the resources of the area. Until the late-1980s, the Kuala Lipis region, situated approximately 180 km north west of Kuala Lumpur, had restricted accessibility for security reasons precluding serious exploration or mining activity. The situation has changed dramatically in the 1990s, with several foreign explorers active in the Peninsular, targeting old alluvial and underground workings adjacent to the north-south trending Raub-Bentong Suture. Deeper drilling of these prospects has shown there is potential for both small- to medium-scale open pit mining and possibly underground operations, providing companies such as Avocet with an ideal mining investment opportunity.

With the use of 36 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Co, it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts is noted on this line (see Figure 1). Thus at a glance it is possible to see the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this clifficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component.As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5000 feet bored (see Figure 2).

The effects of detonation of downlines and downline-booster systems on lodse-poured charges of 94% porous prilled ammonium nitrate/6% fuel oil (AN/FO) were determined. Detonation stability was indicated by the initiation-failure pattern of detonating fuse witness lines located at intervals along the charge. Steel tubing was used as the confining medium. Charge diameters (d) varied between 2-21/32 and 8.1/8 in. and specific charge weights (w) of downlines between 4.0 and 93.2gr/ft. The axes of charge and downline were colinear. The minimum value of w required to cause initiation of AN/FO increased with d. When initiated by a downline only, the charge'underwentlowòorder detonation. When downline-booster systems are used, the detonation wave in the downline cuts all equatorial planes in the charge before the detonation wave in the surrounding AN/FO. If the downline itself does not cause initiation, therefore, the explosive ahead of the main detonation wave is crushed, and hence desensitised, by the radially-expanding compression wave and gases generated by the downline. The Manantial Espejo district (Argentina) hosts a low-sulfidation epithermal Ag (-Au) deposit with a proven and probable reserve of 38 Moz Ag and 0.55 Moz Au. The district lies along the southern rim of the Deseado Massif in the Middle to Late Jurassic Chon Aike Province, a large bimodal igneous province dominated by silicic volcanic rocks that were formed during the initial extension leading to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. The district stratigraphy consists of 162 to 161 Ma old rhyodacitic to rhyolitic volcaniclastic rocks of the Chon Aike and La Matilde Formations, followed by 160 to 157 Ma old andesites and dacites of the informally called intermediate formation. The main stage of normal faulting post-dates the volcanic activity and coincides with the formation of the precious metal veins that were dated by 40Ar/39Ar on hydrothermal adularia with ages between 152.8 ¦ 0.8 Ma and 156.6 ¦ 0.8 Ma. Economically important hydrothermal veins show characteristic features of a low-sulfidation epithermal deposit with crustiform and colloform banding, bladed calcite replaced by quartz and abundant adularia. In the Maria Vein, the major orebody of the district, six hydrothermal stages are identified, but only stages one and four contributed metal. Lead isotope ratios in hydrothermal sulfides show a close relationship to ratios in feldspars from the district Chon Aike Formation, suggesting a common source for the Pb and possibly the precious metals in both the magmatic and hydrothermal products, or that the Pb in the hydrothermal veins was derived from the volcanic rocks. The sulphide ores of the Kalgoorlie goldfield have long been looked upon as' refractory, involving special metallurgical treatment. For many years two kinds of treatment have been practised-(l) wet treatment, including fine grinding, amalgamation or concentration of the free gold, concentration of the sulphide minerals with subsequent roasting and cyanidation, and cyanidation or bromo-cyanidation of the residue from the concentrating operation; (2) dry-crushing of the ore and roasting the whole of thecrushed ore, amalgamation of the gold in the calcine during fine grading, followed by cyanidation. The wet treatment was advanced a stage further when, in 1929, the Lake View and Star Ltd. adopted large scale flotation. As a consequence, however, further metallurgical problems were introduced. This paper covers the investigation, ,of one of the most prominent of these problems.Flotation preceded by strakes was satisfactory to a point.The flotation concentrate consisted largely of auriferous pyrite and tellurides, and the gangue minerals in the concentrate were practically barren.Several sources of loss of gold values were, however, found to be associated with this circuit, viz.-(a) There was the loss of gold in the flotation tailing.(b) Loss by dusting during roasting of the flotation concentrate.(c) Loss of gold in the cyanided residue.

It is, considered that the title of this paper includes hot finished seamless, and continuous-weld pipe, cold drawn seamless tubing, and electrically welded tubing.The continuous-weld process will be reviewed first, passing to the various methods of seamless manufacturing, which, in addition to meeting the demand for hot finished seamless pipe, also supply the raw material for cold drawn tubing, the manufacture of which will then be described. The west coast of New Zealand’s south island is host to a large number of placer goldfields that stretch from the Westport area in the north to Gillespies Beach in the south and inland to the foothills of the Southern Alps. This area is host to a large number of alluvial, glacial and strand line deposits ageing in range from Recent to Tertiary. In recent years exploration models have been developed for off shore placer deposits on the continental shelf.Gold mining on the west coast has exploited placer gold resources from the 1860s to present, and with the recent surge in the gold price the industry is currently undergoing a resurgence. The current increase in mining is dominated by small-scale mechanical operations usually involving one to two people at each site; a few larger operations also exist such as the Grey River Dredge.Mining methods range from using floating bucket dredges to small diggers. Some of the mining technologies used are similar to those employed during the great gold rushes of the 19th century. Exploration and grade control techniques can be very rudimentary often relying on previous sampling programs or wide spaced bulk sample drill holes. Some bulk sample drilling is used on the larger operations as a form of grade control, most of the small operations tend not to use any ore control sampling prior to mining. Extraction techniques relying on simple gravity based designs with riffle tables or spirals are the most commonly used. Environmental standards are very high within New Zealand and require operators to return mined areas to preagreed to landforms. The high rainfall experienced on the west coast causes challenges to operators in regard to water quality. Technical issues combined with often limited capital provide for challenges to the operations.

The Argyle AK1 orebody was discovered in 1979 and subsequently found to be a large, economically viable reserve with high grade diamondiferous ore. Production began via an open pit operation at the end of 1985 and has continued for some 25 years to present day. This, however, will come to an end in the next few years with production moving to an underground operation via block-cave mining methods.A series of studies from 2001 - 2005 was carried out; diamond drilling commenced after approval in 2006, from an exploration drive to determine the likelihood of the current proposed block cave operation.In 2006, development of the block cave project began, in order to realise the part of the orebody below the extent of the open pit mining operation.Development of the block cave technique, comprising an undercut level beneath the target zone of the orebody with subsequent extraction level 15 - 20 m beneath, relies largely on a number of block-caving parameters (hydraulic radius, rock type, structure and orientation of stress and grade of the orebody). These all have an influence on cave ability and eventual profit of the operation. Evaluation of further potential for taking this orebody beyond the block cave phase with options such as sublevel-caving are being considered for the UG-2 portion of the resource/reserve. Diamond drilling for this work is currently under revise.The challenges faced in transitioning form the surface operations to the underground, comprising a changing workforce, converging development drives, underground aquifers, major excavations and transportation of ore via automation are intriguing.

Understanding the slag composition-structure-property relationship remains challenging due to the amorphous nature of slag melts and the difficulty of high-temperature experimental investigations. Since the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 slag system is maybe the most important slag system for various hightemperature metallurgical process, the present research employed high-throughput molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on the entire composition region of the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 slag system to determine physical properties like molar volume, density and diffusivity, structural properties such as distribution of different oxygen types for each simulated slag melt. The obtained slag properties result from the simulations displayed good consistency with experimental data, underscoring the reliability of the MD simulation as a novel tool to predict reasonable slag properties and to study slag behaviour from atomistic insight. The simulated results demonstrate a near-linear relationship between molar volume changes and composition, highlighting the predominant role of oxygen atoms, which is attributed to the significantly larger size of oxygen compared to other cations in the slag melts. This disparity in size leads to oxygen ions occupying most of the space in slags, thereby playing a major role in determining the overall molar volume. The simulation results of slag density revealed a decreasing trend with increased SiO2 content and identified a local minimum at constant SiO2 when Al2O3 content increases, also consistent with established slag density models. Furthermore, the simulated oxygen self-diffusion coefficients reveal a strong composition-structureproperty relationship, where an increase in CaO content enhances slag diffusivity, while a minimum in diffusivity is observed near a CaO/Al2O3 ratio of unity. The diffusivity minimum also corresponding to the local viscosity maxima, indicating effective simulation of charge compensation effects and dynamic characteristics of slag melts. The simulated distribution of oxygen types in slag — bridging oxygen (BOs), non-bridging oxygen (NBOs), free oxygen (FOs) and tricluster oxygen (TOs) — reveals a composition-dependent pattern: BOs peak near CaO/Al2O3 = 1, NBOs and FOs are abundant in CaO-rich areas with NBOs peaking near the Ca3SiO5 composition, FOs in the CaO corner, and TOs predominantly in the Al2O3 corner, highlighting the complex interplay of network formers and modifiers for the charge compensation effects on the slag’s structural properties. The successful application of MD simulations in this study paves the way for a powerful approach to explore the complex relationships in multicomponent slag systems and bridges the gap between mathematics modelling and experimental observations in high-temperature metallurgical processes.

There is active debate and research around the most suitable indicators to assess the sustainability of mining. The most common approach is to report a range of data for a given mine site (or less preferably, a company total), such as inputs, outputs, benefits and potential costs. The most popular protocol in use (and growing rapidly) is the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). However, these measures are numerous and still do not allow a single over-arching indicator to be developed. Other measures, such as known mineral resources over time, do not account for critical challenges such as declining ore grades, increasing wastes and poorer quality ores or more difficult mineralogy. By adopting a thermodynamic approach to sustainability, through the concept of æexergyÆ, it is possible to incorporate into a single measure the effective quality of mineral resources. Exergy involves the assessment of the minimum energy costs involved in producing a mineral resource with a specific chemical composition and concentration from common materials in the environment. The exergy of a mineral resource is evaluated from mineralogic composition, concentration (or ore grade) and, of course, quantity, by multiplying the unit exergies with the tonnes of the resource produced (or consumed). Since exergy is a thermodynamic quantity (ie energy or joules), it is additive across different minerals, such as iron ore to gold to copper or even oil and gas or coal û making it an ideal indicator to assess mineral resource sustainability at the industry scale rather than the individual mine scale. This paper briefly outlines the theoretical basis for exergy, and then presents a range of commodity case studies showing the application of exergy to the Australian mining industry. Overall, the usefulness of exergy is clearly demonstrated for use as a broad indicator of the sustainability of mineral resources at the national or even global scale.

This paper summarises the research, development and initial application of a sensing platform that has the potential to monitor subsurface deformations, pore pressure and other variables simultaneously to gain a better understanding of rock mass behaviour. The platform is based on Networked Smart Markers (NSMs) devices, which, with their ability for wireless communication between individual sensors and the possibility of real-time data acquisition and processing, will assist in the development of predictive tools to better assess rock mass behaviour.A good opportunity to implement this technology is in the specific application of transitioning from an open pit mine to an underground caving operation. One of the key elements to maintaining the mining business during such a transition is having a good understanding of the unique geotechnical conditions of mutual influence created during the open pit to underground interaction. The knowledge acquisition will require the implementation of a robust platform for geotechnical monitoring, which could be enhanced by incorporating the NSMs. The integration of sensors within the NSMs would enable the collection of additional data about rock mass behaviour (ie caving propagation and crown pillar fracturing), which could be used to improve the management of mining operations and, specifically, allow the development of reliable predictive tools based on the data collected.CITATION:Widzyk-Capehart, E, Hölck Teuber, C, Fredes, O, Rivero, V, Sanchez, E, Pedemonte, I, Gonzalez, N and Steffen, S, 2016. The Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is owned and operated by Xstrata Copper and is located in North-West Queensland, Australia. The mine is currently undergoing a transition from an 11 Mtpa open pit mine to a large sublevel cave underground mine producing 6 Mtpa. Due to a number of factors, including geometry of the pit and crusher depth, the decision has been taken to develop a hoisting shaft rather than inclined conveyors.During the feasibility study the strip and line shaft sinking methodology was preferred over blind sinking due to scheduling opportunities and interactions with level development. Other methods of sinking considered included large-diameter raise boring, which was rejected due to concerns relating to centreline accuracy. The strip and line decision was reviewed during the tender process where better than anticipated blind sink advance rates and costs were presented. This in turn enabled the higher cost of the blind sinking method to be justified by a combination of reduced risks including schedule and ground water management. This paper discusses the pros and cons of both strip and line and blind sinking methodologies in the Ernest Henry context including sinking rates and total schedule impacts of the two methods, the key risks associated with each method, cost implications of blind sinking and safety implications of the work methods in general. The paper then concludes with the reasoning behind the decision to change to blind sinking for the EHM shaft.

"In the platinum group metals (PGM) industry, smelters are often perceived as ‘black boxes’ that have to process concentrates of variable mineralogy and originating from multiple mines operating along strike or downdip from each other in the same geographical region, as is the case in the Western Bushveld of South Africa. However, PGM smelter complexes are much more sensitive to concentrate blend variation than most metallurgists or geologists would anticipate.This paper will review the impact of concentrate blends deriving from a number of concentrators processing ores from the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) on smelting and converting behaviour and the constraints they impose upon smelter operation. Significant variation in behaviour is not only noted between the main mineralisation types, namely the Merensky and Upper Group 2 (UG2) reefs, but also within a given reef type. Due to the way PGMs are mineralised and finely disseminated, concentrators have to grind concentrates ultra-fine to liberate the PGMs and provide a sufficiently high-grade concentrate for smelting.The chemistry and mineralogy of the concentrates vary with the type of mine (open pit versus underground), the reef type and varies along strike; this variation impacts numerous key smelter parameters such as the base metals content, the matte fall, the converter aisle capacity, sulfur dioxide gas production, furnace matte and slag temperatures, and the accumulation of high smelting chromite-spinel minerals that has led to significant smelter upset conditions such as catastrophic furnace hearth and sidewall failures.Due to the production intensity of smelting, ie its high rate of processing per unit volume, smelters have been found to be far more sensitive to rapid variation in concentrate properties, highlighting the need for adequate blend control.CITATION:Eksteen, J J, 2016. The geology of an area in north-western New South Wales, bounded by the South Australian and Queensland borders, latitude 32° S. and longitude 14° E. is discussed.The area involved includes sixteen 1:250,000 standard military sheets and covers approximately 96,000 sq. miles.The geology of the Willyama Complex is not dealt with but a small area of metasediments previously included in this unit is separated and a possible correlation with Precambrian to the east is suggested. Torrowangee Group sediments are described and the problem of nomenclature using a glacial implication is raised.Nine areas of proven Lower Palaeozoic sediments are considered and their relationship to the boundaries of the Bancannia Trough outlined. It is possible that some exposures not yet substantiated by fossil evidence may prove to be Lower Palaeozoic rather than Precambrian in age.The sediments of the Lachlan Geosyncline in the area of the Cobar massif are described and new concepts on the age and distribution of some of the established stratigraphic units are introduced. The absence of rocks of Middle Silurian age probably indicates the time of a major orogeny in this area.Lithology, thickness, and distribution of the Upper Devonian sediments is considered and some of the more recently found fish plate localities are listed.Mesozoic sediments occur in isolated areas of Lower Jurassic age and in the Great Australian (Artesian) Basin. A four-fold subdivision of sediments of the basin has been possible in some areas but lack of sub-surface information at present, precludes the possibility of correlation with the type sections in Queensland.Units in the Cainozoic are subdivided and a five fold subdivision of the Quaternary, at present being used throughout western New South Wales, is described.

The stratigraphic sequence west of Mount Isa contains the Judenan Beds, Eastern Creek Volcanics, and May Downs gneiss. It is an incomplete sequence as major north-south faults divide the area into four separatezones containing portions of these different units. The first three zones, which occur directly to the west of the Mount Isa Fault, consist of quartzites and quartz-mica schists which are uncorrelatable between zones but have been grouped together as the Judenan Beds. The most western zone contains an incomplete section of Eastern Creek Volcanics which rests conformably on a unit believed to be equivalent to the Mount Guide Quartzite; this is again underlain by the May Downs gneiss. A detailed description of the rock types is presented, but only a broad stratigraphic correlation is possible with the very much thicker sequence to the east of Mount Isa.The age of sedimentation is believed to be Lower Proterozoic and it may not occur in the type of geosynclinal basin envisaged by previous authors.This sequence is intruded by many small basic intrusions and also the Sybella Granite with its associated microgranite and pegmatites. The Sybella Granite consists of both a massive and a foliated phase; the latteris generally restricted to the margin of the main granite mass.Four regional metamorphic zones have been identified on the basis of their pelitic mineral assemblages; these are a chlorite, biotite, biotite-cordierite, and a sillimanite zone; separating each are prominent north-south faults.This metamorphism is a regional metamorphism which accompanies the first generation folding of the area and is not associated with the emplacement of the Sybella Granite. A very localized retrogressive metamorphism is also found in some areas of second generation folding.

The relationship between the geology of porphyry copper deposits and their processing performance is an area of interest. Being able to predict comminution properties of the ore from physical characteristics and geological descriptions would allow an increase in the precision of capital cost estimates, operating cost estimates and throughput rates. This geometallurgical approach would reduce the requirements for expensive comminution tests.As the comminution circuit is the highest capital cost item in the plant and a possible throughput bottleneck, understanding the variability in hardness within the orebody is critical. A geometallurgical model allows calculation of ore hardness values in mining blocks from ore characterisation data. This model subsequently uses a combination of simulation and power-based approaches to relate ore hardness and flotation feed size to grinding circuit throughput.This paper reviews the geometallurgical models developed for seven porphyry copper deposits and discusses the strengths and shortfalls of the methodology and similarities and differences between the different deposits.CITATION:Harbort, G J, Lam, K and Sola, C, 2013. Burwood Beach Sewage Ocean Outfall is being constructed by the Hunter District Water Board as part of an amplification scheme to eliminate pollution from adjacent bathing beaches. The outfall consists of a 93m vertical shaft, 1950m of 2.7m diameter tunnel with a series of diffuser outlets connecting the seaward end of the tunnel to the sea floor on a rock outcrop. The site of the work is in the Newcastle Coal Measures and the project is complicated by the proximity of colliery workings to tunnel alignment, although the colliery records provided valuable information on geological features. The location of the tunnel was determined to be in the Waratah Sandstone Formation immediately below the colliery workings after three different alternatives were considered. The shaft, which will be sized to suit contractor's construction methods and equipment, will be sunk through about 24.5m of alluvial material and 68.5m of rock. The tender documents were developed to allow the contractor considerable flexibility in construction method to suit available equipment. The specification also allowed great flexibility in tunnel construction method with minimum cross sectional area of 5.7m2 being the basis for a number of allowable alternative profiles ranging from circular to horseshoe.

An innovative separator known as the HydroFloat cell has been developed specifically for the upgrading of coarse particles that are difficult to recover using conventional flotation cells. The novel characteristic of this separator is the formation of a hindered teeter-bed of fluidised solids into which small air bubbles are injected. The air bubbles selectively attach to hydrophobic particles and form particle/bubble agglomerates that segregate atop the teeter-bed due to their lower apparent specific gravity. The low-density agglomerates are eventually carried into the product overflow launder by the rising current of teeter water. Hydrophilic particles remain in the teeter-bed and are discharged to underflow as a high solids content tailing. Benefits of this hybrid flotation-density separator include enhanced bubble-particle contacting, increased particle residence time, and very low air demand. Test data indicate that significant improvements in the recovery of coarse particles can be achieved using this innovative technology. This article describes the theoretical basis for the development of the HydroFloat cell and provides an overview of recent pilot-scale tests conducted for the phosphate industry.

When using grinding time for a batch grinding operation as a measure of the energy usefully employed for comminution; the assumptions made are often not valid. A kinetic approach, based on a study of the rate constant, or k, value for the material is more acceptable. The Rosin-Rammler distribution equation has been theoretically derived from the general equation for first-order batch grinding. This relationship, incorporating a term for k, was used in a study of the rod milling of a binary mixture of quartz and limestone.The presence and degree of interaction between the components was considered by comparing the size distribution of the mill product with that predicted by assuming the overall distribution equal to the sum ofthe distributions given by the Rosin-Rammler equations for each component weighted according to its volume fraction in the mixture. The interaction was found to be complex and particularly sensitive to particle size.A simple graphical procedure was devised to predict the size distribution of the mill. Product components and this gave a fairly good approximation to experimental data.
