The mining industry is a relatively minor user of water, which has historically been largely soured from private schemes. Frequently mines are often located in areas with limited available water resources. Water reform is increasingly affecting access to water for new mining projects and mining companies are being required to consider the value of water and the implications of reliability in their planning. This paper seeks to briefly review the water reform process in Australia and how it is affecting the mining industry with reference to some recent project experience.

Increasing attention is being focussed worldwide on the strategic environmental assessment of mining projects, including consideration of cumulative environmental effects. In New Zealand there is now an end in sight for inappropriate delays in resource consent approval of responsible mining projects. This paper investigates six case examples of recently consented mining and quarrying projects, whose applications were notified. It also explores the nature of delays that occurred, the factors that contributed to the delays, and whether the consent process delivered fair and effective public participation and desirable environmental outcomes.

The Jurassic coals at Datong are characterised by their strong, massive sandstone and conglomerate roofs which fail suddenly over large areas, crushing pillars and creating destructive windblasts. collapsed areas have exceeded 180,000m2 and windblasts have extended over one km underground and 200m on the surface and have been accompanied by subsidence troughs on the surface. Scientific analysis has researched premonitory signs of caving and the nature of windblasts leading to considerations of alternative mining methods and ways of dissipating the energy of windblasts to reduce their damage and danger..

The Bendigo Goldfield is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is one of a number of quartz-reef fields that make up the greater Central Victorian Goldfield. At Bendigo gold particles are characterised by their very coarse nature, ranging from below 100 to over 10 000 ¦m in size. Some 60 per cent of the gold occurs in particles greater than 1000 ¦m in size. This characteristic ensures that the mineralisation is very challenging to both sample and evaluate. Diamond drilling provides a measure of geological structure, but is a poor measure of in situ grade, understating it by up to 75 per cent. Drilling combined with on-reef development, bulk sampling and geological interpretation has been used to define Indicated Mineral Resources. For grade control, a balance had to be sought between sample representivity, cost, turn around time and practicality. Sampling of extreme nugget effect deposits generally requires the use of bulk sampling in order to be representative. However, the cost and turn around time is significant. As a result, a 50 kg micro-bulk sampling system has been introduced that attempts to overcome these problems by providing a fast, practical method that can discriminate between ore and waste. As the mine passes into production, grade control will increasingly become dependent upon geological data collection and interpretation.

The world-class Waihi (>6.6 Moz Au, >41.8 Moz Ag) and adjacent Favona (>0.5 Moz Au) deposits are within a single volcanic-hosted epithermal Au-Ag district located in the southern Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Gold and silver mineralised quartz veins at both deposits are hosted in porphyritic andesite flows of the Waipupu Formation. Both deposits have veins surrounded by intense widespread hydrothermal alteration that is characterised by the assemblage of quartz, pyrite, adularia, illite or interstratified illite-smectite, plus less common chlorite and albite, which is locally overprinted by minor calcite or rare kaolinite. Quantitative mass transfer calculations using Gresen's general metasomatic equation indicate that hydrothermally altered andesite at both deposits is enriched in silicon, potassium, rubidium, barium, sulphur, gold, arsenic and antimony, whereas sodium, strontium and calcium are mostly lost. Iron and magnesium show mixed gain and loss. Element gain or loss can be directly related to the prevailing alteration mineralogy. Addition of potassium, rubidium and barium coupled with the concomitant loss of sodium, strontium and calcium in intensely altered wall rocks corresponds to the replacement of plagioclase by adularia or illite. Partial retention of sodium and calcium reflects the presence of hydrothermal albite and calcite, respectively. Mass balance calculations show distinct element gain and loss that can be related to the intensity and type of alteration mineralogy. However, because most rocks are intensely altered and the progression into less altered peripheral rocks is not observed in this study, the lateral extent of elements gain or loss is unconstrained with anomalies extending at least 200 to 300 m away from major veins.

With increased pressure for companies to cut costs during design of new mineral processing plants, overall plant design has changed over the last decade with less design for feed blending and less installed surge capacity. This has changed the operability of new mineral processing plants, where disturbances due to variable ore types have resulted in the evolution of new control techniques. These techniques are necessary to maintain stability and optimise the performance of these new plants. This paper describes the benefit of applying these new control techniques in a new mineral processing plant in Australia utilising RockwellÆs ControlLogix system architecture.

After a snap-shot survey of water quality of streams draining various coal measures carried out in 2000 - 2001, West Coast Regional Council expanded its monitoring programme to better establish the condition of streams draining coal mining areas and to characterise the variability of water quality with respect to stream flow. Samples were collected for water quality indicators such as pH, sulphate, turbidity, conductivity, temperature and dissolved oxygen as well as macro-invertebrates, fish and assessments of stream habitat. Water quality sampling was carried out at 27 sites on 21 streams located from Page Stream near Seddonville in the north, to Seven Mile Creek near Dunollie in the South, and to Garvey Creek east of Reefton. There was relatively low variability of pH, conductivity and sulphate concentrations at most of the sites sampled. Conductivity and sulphate concentrations reduced with increasing flow and pH generally increased. Significant effects on macro-invertebrate and fish populations were identified at several of the sites where water quality sampling was undertaken. Of the water quality parameters tested, macro-invertebrates were mostly affected by pH. Although not sampled directly (conductivity was used as a surrogate) heavy metal concentration may explain some of the variation in macro-invertebrate communities. Three creeks affected by mine drainage were sampled for fish and no fish were present. Fish appear to be more sensitive to acid rock drainage that invertebrates. Using data from this survey and other studies conducted in the region, the total length of stream that is actually or highly likely to be adversely affected by acid rock drainage was estimated at 125 km. This figure is useful as a gauge as to the magnitude of the issue in this region and for setting of priorities for remediation. However, as it is only an estimate based on limited sampling sites, it should be used with caution.

"AustraliaÆs mining sector faces challenges to its competitiveness; operating costs are being adversely affected as a result of volatile commodity prices and growing international market pressures.Diesel fuel-generated power used in typical remote mining projects is generally reliable and quick-to-deploy; however it is ongoing expensive operating cost.Many mines and communities in remote locations source electricity from diesel generation, and often pay over $300/MWh in fuel and carbon only (i.e. excluding CAPEX). These costs are expected to rise over time and are vulnerable to price shock events or supply chain interruptions in international markets.Solar photovoltaic (PV) and other renewables can be integrated with existing diesel units to provide a highly reliable power supply. Such renewables now provide a cheaper source of electricity while maintaining the mining industryÆs stringent reliability requirements; some renewables are now cheaper than diesel power ù supplying electricity at approximately $226/MWh.Also, significant funding and concessional rate financing have recently become available to support the development of remote solar-diesel (or solar-wind-diesel) hybrid systems, including: up to $2.2 billion of as-yet uncommitted grants through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and is now seeking mining industry partners, up to $10 billion of concessional financing for emerging renewable technologies through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) and this commences July 2013, ongoing revenue support through the Renewable Energy Target scheme, and other regional support programs administered by various governments.This paper explores: the business case for renewables - what applications and when to consider them, the potential operating cost savings if solar was integrated, the technical challenges and common pitfalls, and how to overcome them, and the upfront investment costs and whether the site is eligible for Government subsidy programs.CITATION:Chambers, C, 2013. Ferruginous manganese deposits have been known at Ripon Hills since the late 1950s. The main group of deposits occur in an area 6 km by 5 km and these were extensively investigated by Longreach Metals N.L. during1971 and 1972 for possible commercial exploitation.Ripon Hills is a dissectcd fault plateau 350 m above sea level formed by the uplift of a block of gently dipping Proterozoic shales, cherts, and dolomite. The plateau consists of chert breccia which is underlain by massive dolomite. The shales which are ferruginous and manganiferous overlie the chert breccia but are now only preserved, in places, in the broad depression and valleys of the plateau.The ore deposits occur as supergene replacement of the shales and were investigated by geological mapping, grid percussion and diamond drilling, and bulk beneficiation testing. Iron and manganese oxides erraticallyreplace Shale accompanied by the leaching of other minerals. The ore is composed of fine grained pyrolusite intergrown with fine grained hematite and locally containing extensively altered bixbyite and braunite. Thegangue mineral is mainly kaolin.The average grade, using a 15 per cent Mn cutoff, was 19 4 per cent Mn and 25·9 per cent Fe for a combined drill-proven, indicated, and inferred tonnage of 56,000,000 tonnes. The average depth of this mineralization from the surface is 11 m. Using a cutoff grade of 20 per cent Mn the average grade was 24·6 per cent Mn and 23·0 per cent Fe for a combined tonnage of 12,000,000 tonnes to an average depth of 8 m.The substantial drop in reserves occurs because a high proportion of the mineralized material contains less than 20 per cent Mn.It was shown that whereas the lower grade ore, despite erratic fluctuations in grade, could be beneficiated to specification grade by crushing, screening, and conductivity ore sorting, the higher grade ore could be beneficiatedto specification grade by crushing and screening only. The utilization of the higher grade ore was considered to constitute a more viable operation.There is potential for high grade manganese ore to be discovered in the Ripon Hills area at the contact of chert breccia and underlying dolomite.

The Central Maratoto Valley in the Coromandel Peninsula contains a sequence of veins in pervasively altered dacite + andesites of the Waipupu Formation. We recognise at least eight different vein types: (1) pyrite stringers, (2) quartz + carbonate veins, (3) crystalline quartz veins, (4) carbonate veins, (5) chlorite + carbonate veins, (6) siderite veinlets, (7) siderite + carbonate veins and (8) carbonate + pyrite veins. The overall temporal trend of the veins is from early pyrite to quartz and then to late carbonate veins. Carbonate veins and pyrite stringers both form planar and irregular veins, whereas some carbonate veins have diffuse contacts with the wall rock. Gold and base metal sulphides are associated with some of the quartz + carbonate veins. Textures within the veins reflect open space filling and multi-phase reopening. A partial record of hydrothermal activity has been preserved by vein crosscutting relationships, hydrothermal alteration minerals and fluid inclusions. Hydrothermal alteration minerals display zonation from south to north. The alteration increases from unaltered to weak propylitic alteration of andesite in the south (MVRCDC1), to sericitic alteration of andesite and dacite in the north (MVRCDC3). The alteration assemblage is dominantly sericitic, with no adularia present, drawing parallels to the Thames region where there is no adularia.

The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 km NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity.

A computer simulation is being developed for in-situ leaching of unbroken, Zn-Pb-Ag sulphide ore. Ferric chloride is the selected reagent. Experimental work showed that a diffusion control model of the kinetic aspects was better than a surface chemical reaction control model. Entrapped reactive grains were accessible to reagent in the samples tested. Precipitated sulphur did not seriously hinder the reaction.

Alluvial gold is an ideal exploration tracer to bedrock source and indicator of bedrock mineralisation style because (i) gold occurs in a wide range of deposit types, (ii) primary composition is sensitive to style of mineralisation, and (iii) it is a heavy resistate mineral that is readily preserved and easily sampled. In regional exploration of the Central Ranges of Irian Jaya, alluvial gold mineralogy has been applied to maximise the information return from panned concentrate sampling and to focus exploration effort. Primary gold is a solid solution of Au+Ag¦Cu¦Hg, ¦ trace Pd, Te, and Sb. In general Ag¦Hg increase and Cu decreases with inferred decreasing temperature of formation, and gold from particular mineralisation styles has signature compositions that can be used as indicators of bedrock mineralisation type. Furthermore, the abundance of alluvial gold is an indicator of the economic potential of a catchment. The convergent continental-oceanic plate geology of the Central Ranges is conducive to a wide range of mineralisation styles. Mineralogy of gold in ophiolite, skarn, porphyry, mesothermal vein and possible VHMS environments is characterised from alluvial and bedrock samples, and the use of gold mineralogy in prospecting at regional scale through prospect definition to drilling is demonstrated.

An understanding of the origin of mineral deposits and their relationship to local and global geotectonics is essential if regional targets for mineral exploration are to be chosen. Volcanism, metamorphism and tectonism are especially significant for the origin and emplacement of mineral deposits, which, far from being fortuitous oddities of nature, occupy well defined positions within distinctive lithofacies. Thus, suggestions for mineral exploration targets can be made taking into consideration the position of 'fossil' convergent and divergent plate tectonic boundaries to indicate areas of specific types of mineralisation. To be borne in mind, though, that level of exposure, time and location of magma generation are all additional and important controlling factors. To further understand the importance of the above parameters, one must refer to the concept of paired metamorphic belts (Miyashiro 1973) which develop during an orognic cycle. These belts are generally constructed in such a way that an ophiolite type complex with metamorphic grades related to high pressure and moderate temperature regimes is flanked by an area of calc-alkaline volcanism and granitic activity with metamorphic grades within a region of high temperature and low pressure. The former situation is usually the seat of primary magmatic mineralisation, whereas the latter contains base metal. Deposits of acid plutonic and volcanic association. As will be seen later, this particular metamorphic-volcano-orogenic situation is well developed in some parts of New Zealand. For the present purpose a distribution of potential ores as related to plate tectonic processes is given below:a) Divergent plate boundaries: primary magmatic Ni-Cu, Pt,Cr, PeS2 and Cu, Pb,Zn in hot brines-hydrothermal environments Mn deposits.b) Convergent plate boundaries: stratabound Cu-Fb-Zn-Ag of felsic volcanogenic association. Porphyry eu-Au of island arc type, porphyry Cu-Mo of continental type. Cu, Au, Y, Sn, Hg, Sb of vein type and replacement lode related to granitic activity.c) Au of hydrothermal vein association, related to late dynamo-metamorphic events. By virtue of ocean floor spreading, regions of divergent plate boundaries are eventually juxtaposed or welded n to areas where plate collisions occur. This is then followed by partial melting due to various causes, just above the descending plate; thus creating a zone of acid to intermediate magmatism. The final picture is that of an orogenic zone with the paired metamorphic belts outlined above.

Geological reconciliation is an indispensable part of BHP Billiton’s Western Australian Iron Ore (WAIO) operations. Since 2009 our reconciliations have been calculated in a single, centralised sequel-server database. This system draws data from across our operations and calculates a hierarchical sequence of reconciliation factors that span the company from the smallest grade control (GC) block to the whole of WAIO. It then presents the results using sophisticated graphical reporting tools.The initial motive for developing WAIO’s reconciliation system was to meet corporate compliance and public reporting requirements. The ability to validate our resource and reserve models by comparing their estimates of tonnes and grade with production figures remains the system’s principal function; however, as the system has matured, we have significantly developed its ability to support the improvement of various technical activities within the business. For example, the system can now calculate and report reconciliation factors for different resource classifications, short-term planning models and geometallurgical estimates.More recently, great emphasis has fallen on the system’s ability to detect and warn of possible geological issues that may pose a risk to either production schedules or product quality. We envisage a future where automated analysis of our large historical data set will enable high-risk conditions within future mine plans to be detected and highlighted.In all of these ways geological reconciliation plays an important role in contributing to this company’s financial and operational resilience.CITATION:Loach, S J, 2017. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict elemental concentrations of copper and nickel in soils from consideration of the concentration of these elements in vegetation in an ultrabasic complex in New Zealand. Regression equations were computed from sixteen independent variables involving concentrations of ten elements in plant ash, and various physical factors such as slope and altitude of the site, and height of the tree. One elemental and one physical variable were significant for nickel at the 90 per cent level of probability and five elemental and two physical variables were significant for copper at the same level. Use of the regression equations explained 32·5 per cent and 26·5 per cent of the variance in the respective relative accumulations (amount in plant divided by amount in soil) of copper and nickel.Predicted concentrations of copper and nickel in soils agreed more closely with the observed values in the soils than did the levels of these elements in plant ash.Although the results may specifically apply only to the test area, the principles should have universal application.

Structural, mineralogical, and textural data from the Tarnagulla Goldfield demonstrate that the area has undergone three significant phases of deformation. The first phase of deformation (D1) predates the intrusion of the Tarnagulla pluton, which has been dated using K/Ar as 391 ¦ 5MY. We regard this pre-granite deformational event as the major regional deformation. Gold-bearing quartz veins have been deposited in dilational sites on west-dipping reverse faults. These sites demonstrate a geometry related both to faulting associated with D1 and the plunge of the F1 fold axes. This evidence, together with chronology of unmineralised ? D2 and D3 faults, the absence of quartz veining associated with D3 events, and the deformation of carbonate-quartz-biotite-sulphide aggregates within Sl by later S2, lead us to conclude that the bulk of the mineralisation was essentially syn- or late D1 . d18O values for fluids in equilibrium with vein quartz from Central Victoria have indicated equivocal support for either a magmatic or metamorphic origin. Our evidence supports a pre-magmatic origin for mineralisation at Tarnagulla and hence tends to favour a metamorphic fluid source.

Grade control is a process of maximising value and reducing risk, through the delivery of quality tonnes to the mill via the accurate definition of ore and waste. It essentially comprises data collection, integration and interpretation; local resource estimation; stope design; supervision of mining and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of geological understanding led by high-quality mapping and sampling to drive appropriate estimation strategies and mining. Gold veins show various complex features relating to erratic grade distribution (nugget effect), variable geometry and internal architecture. These include variations in dip, strike and width, late-stage faulting/shearing effects and geometallurgy. Such variations generally require close geological understanding to ensure optimum grade, minimal dilution and maximum mining recovery. A well designed grade control program will prove to management and stakeholders that by applying geological knowledge, the mining process can be more efficient and cost effective. This paper reviews the issues of grade control in underground gold mines and focuses on integrated mapping and sampling through three case studies.

More and more, today’s mining geologists are asked to identify and create 3D value domains for multidisciplinary usage: grade definition, geometallurgical performance and geotechnical characteristics, to name a few. Often, that domain shape is the result of an assumed or conjectured value as a surrogate to a set of conditions (eg kaolinite-rich, sericite alteration). Would it not be instead better to create the respective domain through identification of a consistent quantifiable geologically-based pattern as its basis?Critical to the identification of patterns is the transformation of 3D point data into a model by a method that uses few, if any, preselected thresholds. Too often we complicate the reviews of the modelled data by prejudging the value range of interest. And when we do revert to 2D views (ie sections and plans), we tend to only examine numbers or line traces. These hinder and obscure identification of geological patterns particularly in deposits of complex geology. Instead, these data should be looked at with minimal prejudgment and interrogated in 2D space by one of the best and most eye-catching display types: filled contour plots.Here we present two different processes that transform data with minimal preselection into formats that allow for pattern recognition by filled contour plots. These are: probability assisted constrained kriging (PACK) and multiple interval interpolant formation (Aranz Geo’s Leapfrog® software). The former creates a 3D model of probabilities on a threshold value; the latter creates numerous (=10), regularly-binned 3D interval interpolants. The results of each method are examined as filled contours over numerous sections or plans. Any distinct patterns are quickly discerned thereby readily identifying the best value to base the creation of a domain. These processes therefore provide a way to marry recent advances in software tools with what is supposed a geologist’s core skill: pattern recognition.CITATION:Juras, S, McKinley, S and Uludag, E, 2017.
