Using a typical small logging instrument (Neltronic KPD), a natural gamma reference section for part of the Brockman Iron Formation and part of the Mt. McRae Shale has been established in the Newman area. This is compared with the stratigraphic type section of Trendall and Blockley (1968). Folding and faulting are recognised using natural gamma logs. Because of the confidence with which stratigraphic horizons can be identified, less expenditure on diamond and percussion drilling is required to confirm stratigraphic position. Using natural gamma logs as stratigraphic control the apparent thinning of the Banded Iron Formation during iron enrichment is Demonstrated.

The latest addition to the grinding circuit at Bougainville Copper Limited is another 5.5m by 7.3m primary mill (No.13). The mill can operate in a primary or secondary mode. Its distinguishing feature is its capability for speed variation, by means of a cycloconverter-fed synchronous ring motor. The engineering and metallurgical reasons for selecting such a drive system are described together with aspects of the installation and commissioning. Results of investigations into the relationship between mill speed and grinding efficiency are presented. It is concluded that mill speed variation within the range 70 to 80% of critical speed has very little effect on grinding performance. Beyond this range, grinding performance deteriorates. The same conclusions were reached when mill speed was varied at reduced ball charge levels.

The epithermal silver-gold Red Rock Deposit is hosted in the Late Permian inter- mediate to silicic composition Drake Volcanics of New England, N.S.W. This deposit represents one of the few low sulfur epithermal precious metal systems in eastern Australia, and differ! from epithermal models in that the hydrotherma: system which produced mineralization was active in a shallow water marine environment. The Red Rock Deposit has a resource of 180,000 tonnes of 66g/t Ag and 0.9 g/t Au, and a Ag:Au ratio of 70:1. Mineralization is largely associated with hydrothermal brecciation, and occurs as disseminations, vein stockworks, and struc- turally controlled lodes. Ore minerals comprise acanthite (argentite), electrum, native Ag, Ag- sulfosalts and base metal sulfides, Alteration minerals associated with ore are quartz, cal- cite, adularia, pyrite, illite, illite-mont- morillonite, chlorite and sphene (leucoxene). Illitic and propylitic alteration zones sur- round the hydrothermal breccia. Bulk rock analyses indicate that alteration is character- ized by the addition of Si, K, Fe, Mg and the loss of Na and Ca. Ore was deposited from a boiling fluid in a temperature range of 222- 295¦C, and of 0.5-7 wt. Z NaCl equivalent sal- inity. An upper hydrostatic depth limit of about 800 m is implied for the boiling fluid ii an open vein. Sulfur isotopes indicate a mag- matic sulfur source, and oxygen isotopes imply a predominantly marine ore fluid. Modern analogs of the submarine hydrothermal system that formed the Red Rock Deposit occur in the Taupo Zone, New Zealand, and southern Kyushu, Japan.

Fluid inclusions and sulfur isotopic compositions were studied in a possible extension of the Toyoha polymetallic vein deposit. The objective of this work was to gain a better understanding of the ore depositional conditions, sources of ore constituents, and distribution of mineralizing fluid in the region. Fluid inclusions in sphalerite and quartz show that most homogenization temperatures range between 190¦ and 290¦C. Most salinities range from 0.0 to 3.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. Sulfur isotopic compositions of ore minerals (pyrite, sphalerite and galena), determined by a conventional technique, range between 1.3 and 7.7 per mil. The mineralizing fluids were characterized by relatively low and various temperatures and low to moderate salinities compared to those at the southeast region of the main ore bodies (Izumo and Shinano veins) where rare elements such as tin, tungsten and indium occurred. Obtained temperatures and salinities were attributed to the mixing of hydrothermal fluids with groundwater. Sulfur isotopic data suggest sulfide sulfur was of magmatic origin. Isotopic temperatures, estimated from the isotopic fractionation factor between sphalerite and coexisting galena, are between 195¦ and 322¦C. The temperatures are only consistent with fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures in sphalerite or coexisting quartz when sphalerite was a honey-yellow coarse crystal lacking conspicuous colored growth bands. This suggests the detailed classification of mineral pairs growth textures will be necessary for precise in situ measurements to obtain reasonable eothermometric results.

The Bendigo Goldfield is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is one of a number of fields that make up the Central Victorian Goldfield. Since 1993, Bendigo Mining NL has been carrying out an extensive re-evaluation of the goldfield and is currently well advanced in developing an underground mine. The sediment-hosted auriferous quartz reefs are structurally complex and closely associated with anticlinal axes and reverse faulting. The gold within the quartz reefs is characterised by both its coarse nature (100 up to >5000 ¦m) and its erratic distribution; as a result, the Bendigo Goldfield is classed as an extreme nugget effect system. This characteristic ensures that the Bendigo mineralisation is very challenging to sample and evaluate. In this case, diamond drilling is a good measure of structure and geological continuity, but a poor measure of grade and grade distribution. Drilling, combined with on-reef development, bulk sampling and detailed geological studies are required for resource evaluation. For grade control a balance has to be sought between sample representativness, cost, turn around time and practicality. Extreme nugget effect deposits like Bendigo, require the use of bulk samples in order to be representative. However, the cost and turn around time is significant. As a result, a micro-bulk sampling system has been introduced that attempts to overcome these problems by providing a fast, practical method that can define ore from waste. Bulk sampling and on-vein development are still necessary for resource and reserve estimation.

Macraes Mine is a large-scale open-cut and underground gold mine located in Central Otago, on the South Island of New Zealand. This paper presents the role of geological mapping in the grade control process at Macraes Open Pit as a case study, and demonstrates how systematic geological mapping can add significant value to the mining cycle. Geological mapping has proved to be a valuable foundation for orebody interpretation and analysis.Practical applications and lessons learnt are summarised, including predictive control of the orebody, improvement of geotechnical modelling, and identification of further exploration targets.

Hydrothermal scheelite precipitated in fault-veins at Paradise, Bonnie Jean, Davidson's and Glenorchy mines display chemical variability involving REE patterns that are transitional between two end-member types. Type I is a MREE-enriched pattern with no or a small positive Eu anomaly. Type II is a flat to MREE-depleted pattern with a strong positive Eu anomaly. The chemical inhomogeneity of these scheelites can be explained by a model of fractional precipitation of REE, with preferential removal of MREE from the fluid during precipitation of scheelite. Irrespective of the mechanism responsible for scheelite precipitation, the source of dissolved constituents is different for scheelites from the Paradise Mine. Bonnie Jean, Davidson's and Glenorchy scheelites formed from LREE-enriched fluids whereas Paradise scheelites precipitated from fluids that were lower in LREE. These inferred fluid characteristics cannot be linked unambiguously to specific source rocks in the region, but could suggest that scheelite deposited in the Paradise fault-vein reflects a more mafic source of REE possibly greenschists, whereas the REE in scheelite from the other mines suggest a more felsic source.

Whole rock geodhemical analyses from samples of Potosi gneiss within the Willyama Supergroup have been utilised to identify geochemical trends towards Pb/Zn ore positions. Although the analyses come from disparate sources they have been incorporated in the data base only if locational, sampling, analytical, lithological and stratigraphic descriptors were reliable. These data have been statistically analysed using programmes of the GASP software package. A discriminant function has been derived which permits Potosi gneiss associated with the Pb/Zn lode horizons in the Broken Hill domain to be distinguished from Potosi gneiss in a similar stratigraphic position in the Maybell Domain. In the "near ore" position the Potosi gneiss has significantly lower mean Na2O and significantly higher mean MnO. Also mean Rb, CaO and K20 are higher and mean Sr lower. This discriminant function serves to identify areas prospective for Pb/Zn mineralisation. A second discriminant function based on MnO, Si02 and K20/Na20 gives a semi- quantitative indication of proximity to ore.

Dominion Mining Ltd. and the JKMRC have conducted a detailed investigation of the performance of two of Dominion Mining's gold treatment plants (Haveluck and Paddy's Flat). In terms of design each plant is considerably different. The Paddy's Flat plant uses a single stage SAG mill with recycle crusher, followed by single stage ball milling. The Haveluck plant uses the more traditional approach of multi-stage crushing and ball milling. The performance of these two plant designs in terms of energy efficiency and cost of comminution equipment, developed at the JKMRC, to accurately predict both power draw and size reduction characteristics at these plants is evaluated.

Radioisotope X-ray and neutron techniques of analysis can be used for the determination of a wide range of elements in minerals. The most important applications of these techniques to the mineral industry are for on-stream analysis of slurries and solids, and for geological assay. The radioisotope X-ray techniques are the more developed ones and two installations for on-stream analysis are in routine use in mineral processing plants in Australia. Neutron techniques are being developed, and should prove valuable for geological assay of large numbers of mineral samples, for borehole logging, and for specific on-stream analysis when the cost of the equipment is warranted.

Mathematical modelling was carried out to determine the probable convergence and vertical stress patterns around a retreating longwall panel in an underground coal mine in New South Wales. An 'Electrical Resistance Analogue' and a program called 'THREED' based on the displacement discontinuity method were used for the modelling. Parts of the obtained results are presented here and compared with some measurements of convergence at the site. The modelled and measured data agree better qualitatively, than quantitatively.

In the world-class mining district of Morococha, epithermal polymetallic replacement bodies and veins overprint porphyry mineralisation and skarns related to subvolcanic intrusions of Miocene age, thus indicating ore formation in two different environments, separated in time or forming a continuum. The district covers an area of about 70 km2 in the north-western part of the Domo de Yauli complex in theWestern Cordillera of central Peru and is part of the Miocene polymetallic belt, also hosting the deposits of Colquijirca (Bendez· et al, 2008b) and Cerro de Pasco (Baumgartner, FontbotT and Vennemann, 2008). Multiple late-Miocene porphyry stocks intruded Permian, Triassic-Jurassic and late-Cretaceous sedimentary carbonate and volcano-sedimentary formations, as well as large mid-Miocene barren intrusions. Extensive field work and detailedmapping of different styles of orebodies suggest that ore formation in the area was related to the late-Miocene magmatism. Good outcrop conditions and superimposing of different mineralisation styles make Morococha an ideal location for studying ore-forming processes in a complex porphyry-related magmatic-hydrothermal system in which porphyry-to-epithermal transition occurred. Pitch-steering models have been developed for discretely advanced mining machines (such as heading machines and coal shearers) using small-angle geometry and there are illustrative examples of simulator predicted performance. Although simple linear models result from the analysis of open-based machines, sledge mounted machines require execution of a Linear Programming energy minimisation to determine the attitude of the machine base at each advance over the previously cut floor steps. An analytical approach is based on elastic beam concepts developed for such applications as longwall face conveyors, caterpillar tracked machines such as continuous miners and longhole drills. Simulation results for longhole drills show the expected performance of an automatic guidance system and the destabilizing effects of sensing deviation too far behind the drill bit. Certain drill bit boundary conditions are expected to assist TBM. steering studies in three dimensions.There is a real role in mining machine steering for the mathematical models used in flight simulators.

The geographic imperative of ore systems leaves mining, more so than virtually any other aspect of modern industry, heavily dependent on obtaining and maintaining social licence to operate. A prospective miner cannot arbitrarily walk away from a deposit in search of more favourable community perceptions – concentrations of mineral endowment represent highly specific and fixed elements of the landscape, and their development and extraction thus requires the acceptance and trust of a specific network of landholders and stakeholders, sometimes with diverse and even competing interests in the development and use of the local environment. Weakness or absence of such social licence can bring added costs and complexity to developing and operating a mine – and in extreme cases even result in project failure. "Currently mine process studies and geochemical waste characterisation are considered as two interdependent studies, necessary for the development of the mine and inclusion in the environmental impact statement (EIS). Geochemical waste characterisation will utilise the simulated tailings produced by the mine process studies team to understand the behaviour of the tailings, but the two teams rarely integrate these to develop a coherent and agreed final design.Thorough mine waste geochemical assessments can develop processes to minimise environmental harm, resulting in substantial savings in the decommissioning, closure and rehabilitation phases, and may also be able to address changes in mineral processing methods that can result in substantial savings in process inputs, or even recovery of metal concentrates.Based on geochemical waste characterisation, the full cost of waste management can be calculated and incorporated into the costing of milling.  This allows for a more effective evaluation of the metallurgy.  A number of examples are presented in which substantial improvements have been made from the collaboration of both the metallurgical and geochemical teams during planning and the metallurgical team and environmental team during operations.*This paper is only available for individual download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The recent and active magmatic arcs of eastern Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Solomon Islands are well endowed with sulfide mineralisation and include deposits such as Ladolam, Panguna and Solwara 1. The majority of the mineral systems in this belt are younger than four million years old, with some deposits remaining active to the present day as exemplified by active hydrothermal systems on the island of Lihir. The geodynamic setting that led to the formation of these deposits is still unresolved, with, for example, both the Pacific and Solomon Sea plates considered responsible for the formation of the Ladolam deposit on the island of Lihir under different models. In order to understand and characterise the formation of south-west Pacific mineral deposits, we must first reconstruct the complex geodynamic evolution of the region. New kinematic reconstructions show that while mineral systems in eastern PNG and the Solomon Islands are hosted within a single arc related to subduction at the New Britain and San Cristobal trenches, variable and discrete geodynamic settings exist within both the upper and lower plates throughout this region, which give rise to distinct mineralised corridors. Most notably, this region is host to: the Solwara 1 deposit, which occurs within a major transtensional corridor in the eastern Bismarck Sea the Ladolam deposit (Lihir), which is interpreted to have formed above but in relation to tearing of the subducting slab the Panguna deposit, which is related to structure in the subducting slab marginal to the actively spreading Woodlark Basin.An evaluation of the nature and variability of these diverse geodynamic settings through time can provide us with a better understanding of the relationship between the active south-west Pacific magmatic arcs and mineral deposit formation. Changes in feed size distribution can have significant effects in rod mill grinding. The product sizing resulting from wet batch milling of a tin ore showed little influence on fines production after truncating the feed at either the coarse or fine end. The addition of fine material caused a less amount of fines to be produced and a possible increase in grinding at coarse sizes, although this is complicated by the changing feed size distribution. The changes in feed size distribution caused no tendency for preferential grinding of the cassiterite.

The introduction of Progressive Closure and Rehabilitation Plans (PCRPs) in Queensland from 2019 places greater importance on planning and implementation of mine rehabilitation activities. The progress and outcomes of progressive rehabilitation activities is monitored and reported upon to demonstrate success in achieving progress towards the approved post-mining landform, and to inform corrective action where required. The requirements of PCRPs place additional emphasis on mine sites to quantify the risks of successfully achieving planned outcomes. This is particularly challenging given mined-land rehabilitation is a complex process involving decisions on multiple inter-acting management interventions, climatic conditions and spatially variable site characteristics.

LKAB is a mining company situated in northern Scandinavia, manufacturing blast furnace- and direct-reduction pellets and sinter fines. Pellet development at LKAB comprises testing at laboratory and pilot scale. The LKAB Experimental Blast Furnace (EBF) is a unique test facility and an important tool in terms of product development and process research. For a better understanding of pellet behaviour in the blast furnace process, LKAB has started to use automated mineralogy for the characterisation and quantification of its iron ore products and pellets. A mineralogical evaluation of iron ore olivine pellets, taken from a test campaign in the EBF, has been performed. The studied materials were samples from excavated pellet layers through the entire EBF at different positions. A large number of iron ore pellets was analysed using a combination of automated mineralogy, using QEMSCAN«, and chemical analysis. Important information about the performance of pellets in the blast furnace process, such as a quantitative description of mineral and iron oxide alterations at different temperatures, Fe-reduction and alkali deposition, was obtained.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins.
