The methods employed in dressing 'the tin ore up to the required percentage of purity depend mainly on the type of ore crushed.These may be briefly divided into two distinct classes-viz., q, free: milling ore and a complex milling ore. In the former the ore is practically free from the common metallic sulphides, such as pyrites, mispickel, blende, galena, etc., and 1!' clean concentrate of 70 per cent metallic tin can be directly obtained in one continuous act of concentration; in the latter, however, in order to get a good extraction, it is only advisable to primarily concentrate up to 30 to 40 per cent. tin oxide, the rest being the sulphides of the metals. This concentrate is then roasted, re-ground, and re-concentrated up to 70 per cent. metallic tin on a separate set of tables.In the complex milling ore the tin is intermixed very closely with the sulphides, so that it becomes necessary to collect all the mineral present in order to obtain clean tailings. Stamp mills are the most popular machines for the primary crushing in the district, but whether they are invariably the best for the purpose is rather an open question. No doubt for some of the very tough chloritic ores they are the most efficient, but for a brittle quartzose ore, such as the free milling proposition usually is, the writer thinks Oornish rolls would well hold their own, especially when the tin occurs coarse, as is so often the case with this class of ore. The subject of octanes and knock in petrol engines is of general interest, not only to the engineers and chemists in the petroleum and automotive industries, but also to the motorist who wishes to see some light through the haze of propaganda regarding "super" petrols. A mixture of petrol vapour and air will explode when a spark is passed through it if it contains more than one and a half per cent. or less than six per cent. of petrol vapour by volume. In a petrol engine the mixture has to be within the explosive range before it will operate. When the spark is passed it 'ignites the petrol vapour-air mixture which burns with rapid but finite progress of the flame front 'through the unburnt gases in much the same manner that a charge of dynamite is consumed. The turbulence of the gases in the cylinder under normal operating conditions more than doubles the velocity of the flame front and enables the combustion to be completed by the end of the working (expansion) stroke:KNOCKIf the cylinder head 'is poorly designed or is covered with a deposit of carbon, it is possible for "hot spots" to develop, and these can ignite the mixture before the spark is passed. This pre-ignition gives rise to an engine knock but is accompanied by a dull thud rather than the ringing knock associated with the true "knocking" found in a petrol engine and attributed to the detonation of the mixture. An experimental and theoretical study has been made of the drainage behaviour of two-dimensional packed beds drained from an outlet in the sidewall of the bed in order to identify the fundamental me- chanisms involved. Under these conditions a grad- ient develops in the air-liquid interface in the direction of flow with the interface tilting towards the outlet. This results in a significant volume of liquid being retained in the packing on completion of draining when the interface first reaches the bed outlet. Residual liquid volume and the shape of the air-liquid interface as a function of time were det- ermined experimentally in a two-dimensional packed bed where the packing consisted of glass spheres ranging in size from 0.6 to 10 mm dia. and the bed was drained at superficial liquid velocities rang- ing from 0.007 to 0.32cm/s. The test liquids used were water, glycerine/water solutions and kerosene resulting in a viscosity range of 1 to 10 mPa.s and a surface tension range of 0.0243 to 0.072 N/m. Assuming laminar flow within the bed, a compu- tational model was developed to predict both the liquid residual ratio and the temporal evolution of the drainage profile within the bed. The computed results were in good agreement with the experimental data over the entire range of conditions invest- igated. the computational model was used to estimate the relative importance of the effects of changes in hearth conditions on residual slag volume for typ- ical blast furnace operating conditions. On the basis of the computed results it is concluded that coke quality is a major parameter affecting hearth drainage performance.

To gain further understanding of the operating efficiency of the BHP Slab and Plate Products Division (SPPD) RH vacuum degasser, physical and mathematical model studies of the process have been undertaken. The purpose was to investigate how the various process parameters affect the liquid circulation rate, to visualise the flow patterns, and to identify and eliminate the cause of localised wear in the downleg. In the physical model mixing times were measured using an acid tracer technique. The results were applied to predicting trends in times required to obtain homogenous melt composition under varying conditions. A 2-dimensional mathematical model describing the liquid metal flow has been developed using the PHOENICS fluid-flow package. The physical model results were simulated and incorporated into the mathematical treatment and an improved design for vessel geometry is proposed. The effect of rounding the downleg entrance or installing a baffle between the legs is discussed.

The City of KalgoorlieBoulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth, and as the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25 000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operating entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon company).This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.5 million ounces of gold ore with an average head grade of TEN grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden We located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation.

The ever increasing number of vehicles is leading to slow-moving and even stationary traffic sitting longer in traffic jams over extensive city areas. This traffic situation causes a sharp increase in pollutant emissions from vehicles, and high levels of pollution usually result throughout the built-up area. Reducing the pollution level by using traffic routing measures to speed up the flow of traffic in the existing street network is only possible in exceptional cases.In many cases the only option for achieving a significant improvement in traffic conditions is to shift the traffic underground using a road tunnel or underpass. Such tunnel routes suck off the traffic from large sections of the city, thereby easing the overall traffic flow. Thus on the one hand it produces a sharp reduction in pollution levels in the area of the tunnel route, but on the other hand it can result in locally increased exhaust pollution levels from longer tunnel systems that require mechanical ventilation. The air extracted by the ventilation system is blown out into the atmosphere either directly through the tunnel portal, or via a venting tower. Pollution can therefore occur in the area surrounding such exhaust air outlets.Thus if a tunnel is planned in a city, then closer investigation is required of both aspects: the reduction in pollution in the area of the tunnel route thanks to relocating the traffic and easing congestion, and the increased short-range pollution around the tunnel portals (shafts).

Mass blasts have been the subject of extensive studies because of their potential benefits in mining operations. However, it has not been possible to advance due to the paradigm that states that the blasts near the designed final wall or to critical structures have to be low tonnage. Another reason is the absence of specialised simulation programs to more precisely determine the influence of the energy released by blasting to the rock mass. There are some studies that demonstrate the possibility of massive blasting that maintain the design of the final slope (Farias and Santander, 2014). It should be noted that these studies develop the concept that the size of the blast should not increase the peak vibration in the rock mass.The study was carried out in partnership with Los Colorados Mining Company. Analysis, reconciliation and wall control for two types of blasts were performed:blasting production: approximately 850 000 t, with special wall control considerationsblasting of approximately 950 000 t over the entire width of the bench.Monitoring systems were used in the near field and far field using examination of holes in order to obtain information to assess the impact on the rock mass and then to compare these to conventional blasting combining production and contour blasting.The results show that for a large blasted volume, production and/or those generated from toe to crest on the bench did not produce more impact in the rock mass than the conventional blasting.The conclusions drawn from this study are:an improvement in the excavation rate of 7500 t/h that is higher than the maximum rates normally obtainedthe peak vibrations of the P wave generated by both blasts did not exceed the peak particle velocity criteria (Vergara and Muñoz, 2014)holes examination indicating no difference in their entire length, in pre- and post-blast reviewover US$2 000 000 savings generated in the year (estimated by the client) (Avilés, 2014).CITATION:Vergara, J, Muñoz, C, Ortega, N and Avilés, D, 2015. Agitation leaching data has generally not been analysed to extract the maximum amount of information that is available. Analysis of heap leaching systems has been developing over the last five years to include the underlying rate determining process. This has been found to be diffusion control for all copper leaching; irrespective of whether they are oxide or sulfide minerals. Extension of the diffusion model has enabled better scale-up protocols to be developed. Acid consumption in copper heap leaching operations has been found to be a first-order chemical controlled system. The analysis of the data is relatively straightforward. However the interpretation and scale-up is not as direct as for agitation leaching. The differences in the residence time distributions (RTDs) are required to properly account for the scale-up between test columns and field. The leaching of oxide copper in agitated systems has also been found to be diffusion controlled. However, there are significant differences in the control mechanisms. Initially the leaching control is the supply of acid to the mineral surface. This is limited by the diffusion through the surface boundary layer and is thus subject to the level of agitation. Higher agitation provides thinner boundary layers and faster diffusion rates. Similarly, higher grade material creates a thicker concentration boundary layer and relatively slower leaching. Acid consumption in agitated leach systems is also a first-order system. However, the interpretation of the RTD is easier from batch testing to continuous multiple CSTR series plant operations. Altering the method of acid delivery can significantly reduce acid consumption rates. Predilution of the acid minimises the local acid concentration near the addition point and can reduce the consumption by up to 50 per cent. Modelling of the combined leach rate(s) and acid consumption rates in agitated systems allows comparison of various leaching strategies and selection of the most appropriate. Similarly, the model allows the identification of economic limits to leach recovery; where the cost of acid consumption is greater than the value of the copper recovered. From this analysis selection of residence times for agitation leaching can be determined. The modelling tools are useful in identifying optimum conditions for the leaching process.

Many of the discrepancies that appear when comparing the results of reducing machinery are due to the nature of the materials reduced and the conditions under which they have been treated. It is therefore necessary that manufacturers should employ standard materials in their tests that sufficiently approximate the substances to be ultimately treated if the information is to be of any value to the purchaser. Another advantage to be gained by employing universal standard materials is that by their means one is enabled to compare the relative values of different types of machines. At present much of the data meted out to the public is insufficient to enable them to judge fairly. Of course the best test would be to send some of the stone tor which the machine is required, to be treated by the various crushers in the market that are likely to be suitable for the purpose, but this is not always possible. It would not take long to become accustomed to judge of the value of a machine for a specific purpose if it was guaranteed to work a certain quantity of some standard rock, even if that standard were not identical with the material to be treated.There are many points to be considered before selecting a machine, such as the size of the rough stone it will take, the size to which it will reduce it the proportions of various grades made when crushing to pass through a given mesh the form of the delivered particles the time taken to treat a+ certain quantity the horse-power required to drive the machine, both when loaded and unloaded whether constructed to crush wet or dry the wear and tear of the machine its total weight and weight of the heaviest part the cost of machine what attention it required whether the wearing parts are readily replaced, and several other points common to all machinery. 'When considering these varying quantities, we can tell at a glance certain machines that are suitable for a particular sort of work, and can then compare those belonging to the same class, thus avoiding errors made purposely or through ignotance by persons interested in different machines, who frequently compare machines originally constructed for.

An ongoing challenge in the coal industry is pyrite removal using the flotation method for fine particles. The use of a æseparation in frothÆ (SIF) technique to recover coarse particles of up to a few millimetres in size has presented a potential solution. However the commercial success of SIF is still limited due to the poor understanding of the separation mechanism. The particle floatability in SIF is determined by the constructive or destructive stresses resulting from the forces exerted by the particle on the bubble films. Hence, the surfactant properties and the mineral characteristics (eg hydrophobicity, shape, etc) are the key factors that control the interaction between the particle and froth. In the present work, the interaction forces between different particles (ie crushed glass, pyrite and coal) and a single air bubble are measured in a non-ionic surfactant solution (pentaethylene glycol mono n-dodecyl ether, C12E5) using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Experimental results show that the interaction is primarily dependent on the contact angle (ie the degree of hydrophobicity of the minerals). For crushed glass, the transition from repulsion to attraction was observed as the contact angle increased. As the concentration of C12E5 increased, the adhesion force was suppressed due to wrapping effect. For coal and pyrite with much higher hydrophobicity, long-range attraction was observed. The effect of shape factor was only visible at high surfactant coverage where sign of destabilisation became noticeable on the retracting force curve. These results provide a fundamental understanding of the direct interaction forces of a complex real system between an irregular particle of either crushed glass, pyrite or coal and a single air bubble. Theories developed for interpretation and modelling are thus far based upon the study of ideal systems of glass or polystyrene spheres and an air bubble and were incapable of explaining the interactions in complex real systems. The presented measurements were a first approach to the problem of real mineral-bubble interaction in flotation systems. Thus, the results can only best be interpreted semi-quantitatively.

A fundamental error of sampling occurs when a sample is extracted from a larger mass of ore or lot. The act of sampling requires that all particles belonging to the lot have an equal chance of being extracted. This type of sampling is called unbiased sampling. The sampling equipment (herein referred to as the sampler) should be constructed with some additional mechanical characteristics to guarantee that the samples will be unbiased. Samplers, extracting increments from a continuous flow, such as a conveyor belt, collect aliquots at regular time intervals. These time intervals relate to the number of aliquots extracted from a given mass of lot, whilst passing through the continuous flow. The frequency of extractions will influence the precision or the error of the sample (integration error). Further, the ore variability influences the amount collected from the continuous flow. Normally, the sampling protocol utilised is designed for the extractions obtained from the conveyor belt, omitting any error committed during this operation, ie the error of extracting from the continuous flow. This study aims to analyse the error of sampling a continuous flow by using a variogram with added on auxiliary functions. Each different piece of material passing through the flow will exhibit a distinct temporal variogram, which should influence the frequency of the samples being extracted for each chosen sampling error. The methodology used is presented in the form of a case study from a coal processing plant.

Despite the importance and usefulness of basicity in metallurgical slags, the optimum quantitative expression of it has remained elusive, partly due to the fact that the precise concept of basicity has not been properly clarified. The two basic approaches to the concept of basicity are the Lux-Flood, which perceives basicity in terms of the activity of the free oxide ion, aO2-, and the Lewis, which perceives basicity in terms of the ability to donate negative charge. The former has been almost universally adopted in the area of metallurgical slags, while the latter has been increasingly accepted in the field of glass chemistry. In this paper, some difficulties of the Lux-Flood approach are pointed out, including the need for indirect measures of aO2-, which have proliferated in recent years. Accordingly, it is suggested that the Lewis approach has a good deal to commend it, and that the quantification of it in terms of optical basicity is the best measure of basicity available, which should therefore be more widely applied in metallurgical slags than it currently is. The fact that there are intrinsic problems in evaluating the optical basicities for the transition metal oxides is acknowledged, and a new scale is recommended. The patterns of iso-optical basicity lines in ternary systems are shown to agree well with the pattern of iso-activity and iso-capacity lines under appropriate conditions.

Slurry density measurement, specially in cyclone feed streams, is fundamental to grinding circuit control. With the purpose of increasing the availability of such a measurement, the design of a soft-sensor in an actual grinding plant is addressed in this paper. The system is designed to substitute the momentary unavailability of the real density sensor, either because it has failed or because it has been removed for any other reason. The ARMAX model structure is determined using the stepwise regression method. Starting with a list of the candidate variables, the method selects, one by one, and in a systematic manner the variables which best model the measurement to be replaced, choosing them from the set of presumably correlated candidate variables. In this paper not only the single measurements are included in the list of candidates, but also combinations of such measurements having physical significance. A phenomenological model has been built with the purpose of determining these combinations. It turned out that in most of the cases the components of combined measurements having physical significance were selected by the stepwise regression method, instead of the single measurements. Actual grinding plant data is used to determine the model structure, to estimate the model parameters and to test the predictive capability of the developed soft-sensors. Good results are shown to be obtained during periods of up to 30 hours of the density soft-sensor operation.

To form a true picture of the early history of Queensland, we must think of white settlement advancing like an incoming tide, wave by wave; each wave lapping ahead a little further than the last. The credit for opening up the country belongs to a large number of pioneers, each of whom pushed out just a little further than his predecessors.Contrary to what one might expect, Rockhampton district was settled by overlanders from the south and not from the ocean side. When the Archers, the pioneers of the Rockhampton district, reached Gracemere in 1853, settlement had already made its way down the valley of the Dawson River; for it was from Leith Hay's station at Rannes (a few miles below Mount Morgan) that the Archers advanced northward into the unknown, to find the river that the explorer, Ludwig Leichhardt, had told them must enter the sea somewhere near the Tropic of Capricorn.The Archers travelled northward from Rannes up the valley of the Dee, coming out on the edge of the Razorback Range not very far from the point at which the Dawson Valley Highway drops over into Poison Creek. (Their diary records the bearings from a lookout point to various peaks around Rockhampton, and to-day, by plotting back from these peaks, we can determine the exact spot at which they descended on to the Fitzroy Flats.) We can be certain, then, that they must have been the first white men to set eyes on Mount Morgan; though to them it would have seemed to be nothing more than an insignificant hill...

A key environmental management issue associated with mining projects is tailing disposal. In high rainfall environments this is particularly challenging and generally requires the discharge of excess water from a tailing dam to adjacent streams or coastal waters. Such discharges can potentially have adverse impacts on downstream water quality and the environmental values associated with these waters, such as providing a drinking water supply for local villagers, maintaining a fisheries resource or protecting a fish species of high conservation significance. An alternative to the construction and operation of a conventional tailing dam is Deep Sea Tailing Placement (DSTP). The key features of such a system are:Discharge of the tailing slurry at considerable depth (approximately 120 - 150 m) below the oceanÆs surface. This requires a pipeline to be laid from the process plant to a mix tank, where the tailing is mixed with seawater and entrained air released. The pipeline then continues down the ocean floor to the required discharge depth, which is below the surface mixed layer and the euphotic zone. After discharge, formation of a density current which continues to descend along the ocean floor as long as the slope is sufficiently steep. Final deposition of the tailing in an area where the slope of the ocean floor is insufficient to maintain the density current. This typically occurs at depths of more than 800 m. Water quality issues associated with DSTP include: Impacts on the oceanic water column due to the formation of subsurface plumes which break away from the descending density current. The occurrence of elevated concentrations of contaminants in the interstitial waters of the deposited tailing solids. Fluxes of contaminants from the tailing deposits into the overlying oceanic water column. This paper discusses the water quality aspects of DSTP with particular reference to a case study in Papua New Guinea. The evaluations undertaken as part of the DSTP impact assessment included consideration of both the short- and long-term chemical behaviour of contaminants and bioassays, within the appropriate water quality assessment framework.

The attachment of a spherical particle to a bubble is theoretically investigated under the condition of a mixed sorption coating of a collector. It is shown that the attachment is determined primarily by the hydrodynamic factor involving the displacement of liquid from the gap between a bubble and a particle. The dependence of the attachment on the state of the surface of particle (sorption coating) is due to a change in the boundary conditions on the interface with water both in the case of surfactant chemical sorption and in that of the physical adsorption of oil. It is demonstrated that at large distances the thinning of a interlayer is facilitated by a physically sorbed collector, while near the bubble this is done by a chemically sorbed one.

Shallow interception of groundwater is a special dewa- tering form in the specific geological and hydrogeological conditions. It has an economic and technical effect. The roof of the Fankou Lead-zinc deposit is the Hutianqun aquifer made up of the limestone of the upper Carboniferous system. - A "water-bearing basin" is surrounded by the aquifuge and the aquitard below ¦0 m level at the Shiling Hill section in the Hutianqun aquifer. Based on the natural conditions, an interception gallery is excavated at -40 m level out of "the water- bearing basin", the other gallery excavated at ¦0 m level in the poor water-bearing zone of the Jinxing Hill. During 20 years of experience, the better interception effects have been gained.

Stability control plays a prominent part in the planning and execution of coal winning in the deep open cuts in the Latrobe Valley operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV). Different stability mechanisms affect the individual overburden and coal faces. These are the classical rotational slip in overburden and the three-dimensional tetra- hedral wedge or planar block slip in the coal faces. The stability of the overall batters is affected by the so-called "block sliding" mechanism, which is unique in Australian open cuts. The basal stability of the open cuts is affected by pressure from water in confined aquifers underlying the coal being excavated. This paper describes each of these mechanisms and the current monitoring and con- trol techniques practised by the SECV.

Ausmelt Technology has a unique capability of removing the impurities, phosphorus and sulphur, from the feed materials to the process. Sulphur is removed to the gas phase almost completely because of the interactions of ore and coal in the reaction region at the top surface of the slag bath. Phosphorus is removed to the slag phase, with both basic and higher, controlled iron oxide levels in slag being achieved in the process. The significance of these features of the process relate to the production of pig iron with very low levels of these impurities for the further processing to steel, and to the treatment of high phosphorus and high sulphur raw materials. The marketability of pig iron and the raw materials are discussed in relation to this feature of Auslron.
