In some parts of Australia, mine air cooling may not be needed until a depth of 1300 m below surface is reached. In other locations, it may be essential at a depth of only 300 m below surface. The reasons for these differences are multifaceted. This paper discusses the main factors and describes a simple method to assess whether or not mine air cooling will be required. The method uses a graphical relationship that considers depth below surface, geothermal gradient, surface climatic conditions and directness of the mine intake routes. This relationship has been developed, tested and refined over a period of more than ten years using data collected from most of Australia’s deeper metalliferous mines. The method provides a ‘first-pass’ indication of whether more detailed cooling studies may be needed. Perhaps more importantly, the method’s underpinning by benchmarking against other mines improves confidence in the assessment results. Localised indicator kriging was developed following a similar approach used by Marat Abzalov (2006) in his paper titled æLocalised uniform conditioning (LUC): A new approach for direct modelling of small blocksÆ. Abzalov introduced the idea of mapping panel distributions from uniform conditioning onto selective mining unit-sized blocks that were created using ordinary kriging. This concept of remapping panel distributions was applied to multiple indicator kriging histograms.At Newmont a program was developed that made the remapping of MIK histograms to SMU sized blocks extremely efficient and was subsequently tested on several gold deposits. The results have been encouraging as the localised indicator kriging (LIK) method has eliminated many issues that have plagued both ordinary kriging and multiple indicator kriging. Use of localised indicator kriging methodology limits the smearing of high-grade and the over-smoothing of grade that is common and difficult to control in OK but retains the ability for localising grades. LIK also simplifies change-of-support corrections, eliminates un-mineable slivers of low or high-grade when dealing with small tonnages, and allows for the mapping of linear and non-linear estimates into the same block.

Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

In recent years stricter requirements imposed variously by the Companies Acts, auditors and the Stock Exchanges have resulted in annual financial statements of mining companies becoming more detailed, informative and useful. Standards of reporting on ore reserves have not kept pace with the improvements in financial information disclosure, despite the fact that ore reserves are usually the most important asset of a mining company. The ore reserve reporting practices of fifteen leading Australian mining companies are analysed against important specific criteria. A scientific approach to analysing grade control has been applied at a number of mining operations. By dividing the grade control process into the various stages of data collection and interpretation, errors can be identified using reconciliations of production against predictions. A multi-layer feed-forward neural network was trained (using the error back-propagation algorithm) to learn a subset of rules designed to stabilise the performances of the copper flotation section of a complex sulphide processing plant and then tested in order to evaluate its expert performances. Two types of neural networks were compared: the classical ones, fully connected between one layer and the adjacents (with different architectures), and entropy networks, partially connected and generated according to a methodology that simplifies its building up. The advantages and drawbacks of both were analysed and compared with classic (rule based) expert systems.

The most important mining problem facing many of the established surface coal mines in the Bowen Basin area of Queensland is the rising cost of overburden stripping associated with increasing depths to coal. The Dragline-Hopper-Truck Project is one of a number of responses to this problem, and involves the design and construction of an experimental hopper followed by field evaluation of a dragline-hopper-truck mining system.Such systems, if proven feasible, could be used for a range of applications, eg prestripping, extension of depths for single pass dragline operations and solution of geotechnical problems.

Results of blasting trials conducted at Gregory Mine, a large open cut coal mine situated in the Bowen Basin, show that fragmentation was improved or equalled whilst reducing the amount of explosives previously required. This was achieved by a system of deck loading whereby two or more explosive charges, separated by air gaps, were positioned in the blast hole, thereby extending the effective explosive column whilst minimizing the total explosives required. In the three trials to date, a saving of approximately 213 kg of ANFO per blast hole was achieved. This represented an approximate 20% reduc- tion in ANFO requirements.

A continuous oxygen probe,incorporating a SIRO2 solid electrolyte oxygen sensor which measured the oxygen potential of a small volume of gas enclosed above the melt's surface,was constructed and tested. The oxygen potential of iron-silicate slags in equilibrium with solid iron in the temperature range 1250 to 1300¦C were measured continuously for tests of up to 40 hours duration. Results were in agreement with those of previous workers using gas equilibration techniques. Tests on non- iron buffered slags proved unsuccessful due to corrosion of the probe's component in contact with the slag and an alternative material is Required.

In the early stages of the planning of a new exploitation, the error in ore reserve estimation is an important factor that must not be disregarded. As this error can be computed by geostatistical methods, the risk of the venture can be calculated for different recognition patterns in a certain assumption of economical conditions. A case story is described for an open pit phosphate deposit in which grade/tonnage curves and their confidence intervals are related to an economic function for three drilling patterns and decisions are taken on the basis of cost and value of supplementary information.

The Olympic Dam Mine is a large, mechanised, underground operation currently producing 2.2 million tonnes-per-year of copper/uranium/gold ore. The mine is accessed via one shaft and one service decline. An additional 13 raise bored ventilation shafts have been completed to-date.Ventilation requirements are stringent in order to provide adequate dilution and removal of diesel fumes, radon gas/daughters and heat generated from both engines and wall rock.Due to the nature of the orebodies, the mine workings will continue to expand laterally necessitating the addition of at least one major surface raise every year.

Dragline operations have played a major and successful role in coal mining around the world for more than 30 years. Because of this long history, many of the operating draglines are reaching an age where maintenance and downtime costs are prohibitive, and decisions need to be made to either replace or refurbish them.In the current economic climate, refurbishment is a popular choice and this usually involves major structural repairs above and below the roller circle, together with replacement of the roller circle components. Often, the dragline tub is also replaced by a completely new one.

A study of two laterite profiles developed on a serpentinite near Rockhampton, shows that loss of Si02 and MgO results in the relative concentration of Fe203, A1203 and a number of minor elements. Serpentine is broken down to form montmorillonite, goethite, quartz and kaolinite. Enrichment of nickel occurs, and it is shown that the element is mainly associated with montmorillonite and serpentine. An experimental investigation was carried out to determine the various gas flow characteristics of bituminous coal samples. Adsorption and desorption tests were first conducted to estimate the quantity of methane that is retained by coal, and the rate at which it is released. Experiments were then carried out to study the variation in coal permeability with changes in applied stress and gas pressure - factors that change continuously with time. To further understand the phenomena involved in retention, release, and flow of gas, electron microscopy was used to study the microstructure of coal and how it affects these characteristics of coal.

Total extraction is a misnomer and invariably some coal losses occur in the mining of pillars. "Fulls" pillar extraction is by the pocket and fender method, the splitting method or the open end method, with extraction in the pillar, and in rows of pillars in planned sequence, using combinations of coal and timber and roof-bolts for support. Where circumstances dictate, partial extraction is used, leaving behind portions of pillars in large blocks for support. The use of such extraction plans and supports as minimum guidelines has contributed greatly to safety in United States Coal Mines.
