Predictive maintenance (also known as ‘condition/health monitoring’) refers to the intelligent monitoring of equipment to avoid future failures. In contrast to conventional preventive maintenance, the maintenance schedule is not determined by a prescribed timeline; instead, it is determined by analytic algorithms, such as machine learning, using data collected from equipment sensors and/or via simulation.Predictive maintenance offers the following benefits for operators and equipment manufacturers:- reduces equipment downtime by identifying issues before failure, thereby enabling convenient scheduling of equipment service and extending equipment lifetime- determines the root cause of the failure, enabling appropriate service to be performed without utilising resources to determine a diagnosis- avoids the unnecessary costs of maintenance and unexpected failures- improves safety and product quality.Algorithms and data are critical to predictive maintenance success. Sensor data is first preprocessed using advanced statistical and signal processing techniques; it is then combined with predictive modelling techniques, such as machine learning, to estimate equipment health.Once tested, predictive maintenance algorithms may be used in an operational setting within an IT environment, such as a server or cloud. During the design of a new production facility for a greenfields or significant brownfields expansion many design decisions are made driven by an unquestioning objective to achieve 'lowest cash-cost' production costs. In many cases this translates to a design and operating philosophy based on largest-available, single-line equipment. Although acknowledged as an approach that is efficient from an operating cost perspective does this approach always maximise shareholder value? There is an increasing awareness in the mining industry of the value of project flexibility, robustness and value options. The design of a new production facility creates a window of opportunity which should be structured to ensure that project value options and robustness are understood and exploited. This requires the use of emerging valuation methodologies, such as Value-at-Risk and Real Options, as well as tried and trusted NPV/IRR approaches. The paper provides an overview of the basis and application of these less well known techniques in the context of metallurgical plant design. Design guidelines that demonstrate how value options and flexibility can be quantified from both a risk and value perspective are presented. Issues such as use of single versus multiple line equipment, optimum cut-off grade and improved exploitation of the inherent variability of the orebody are also examined. Finally the management issues and approaches to achieving this will be briefly discussed; for example it is common during project development to drive towards increasing certainty as rapidly as possible to facilitate 'accurate' estimation of costs. Understanding and exploiting value options requires a project culture that tolerates, and revels in, ambiguity and uncertainty û something that would make many project teams uncomfortable!

Poor quality water resulting from interaction of surface run-off with saline mine spoil and soils can cause significant problems for water reuse on mine sites. Not only can this saline water lead to machine corrosion and increased maintenance costs, but may cause detrimental effects on the environment. Determining the geochemistry of mine spoil, and the likelihood of salt dissolution during rainfall events, may aid in more effective mine site management of water. Spoil samples were taken from three areas of the German Creek mine site, situated in the Bowen Basin coalfield, Queensland. Samples from two undisturbed areas on the lease were also collected for comparison. Analyses were performed using a variety of laboratory techniques: leaching tests, effective cation exchange capacity determination, X-ray diffraction, clay quantification, and total organic content determination. Results show that dissolution of surface (top 2 cm) salt minerals from spoil areas is an important contributor to surface run-off salinity during rainfall events. Equally, ion exchange with clay minerals appears to be a significant source of elevated ion concentrations in run-off waters. Findings from the undisturbed areas show undetectable quantities of salt mineral species, resulting in waters with low ion concentrations. More generally, monovalent cations (sodium, and to a lesser extent potassium) appear to be derived from dissolution of salt precipitated whereas divalent cations (calcium, magnesium) are more likely to be sourced from exchange reactions with clay minerals. Incorporating knowledge about the mechanism of cation mobilisation from spoil with the spatial distribution of spoil properties and understanding of the dynamics of water quality variations on the site will aid in development of integrated water quantity and quality management strategies.

The mining and milling groups at Batu Hijau are tasked with increasing SAG mill throughput by approximately ten per cent. Avenues used for this process are blasting and crushing optimisation, ore blending and predicting SAG mill throughput in relation to the geological model. This is in line with traditional æMine to MillÆ studies. At Batu Hijau, mill and mine sequencing cannot readily be configured to perform the surveys traditionally required by a æMine to MillÆ study while meeting the daily production target of 140 000 tonnes per day and processing from varying ore types in one pit. A program called BOCCOST (blasting optimisation crushing conveying optimising SAG throughput) has been implemented to capture approximately 200 variables from blasting, mining and milling operations and assign them to a common point in space in the geological model in real time. Interpretive analysis of data from BOCCOST is used to model relationships between the 200 variables to determine which and how these factors affect SAG throughput. Once these relationships are determined, the blasting, ore blending and crushing process can be optimised to generate a product that maximises mill throughput. The relationships modelled from BOCCOST are also used to generate a SAG mill throughput estimator, which can be coded into the production block model. The block model can be reconciled with the geological block model for correlation by geological domain. Once this relationship is established, SAG mill throughput domains can then be established for predicting SAG mill throughput. This SAG mill throughput estimator is then used in conjunction with revenue calculations to determine an ore cut-off, which combines these two elements to maximise metal production.

Magnetic Separators have a wide application in dry separation processes, frequently in conjunction with High Tension Separation. Dry processes can frequently be superior to established processes in more commonplace mineral associations. A system of dynamics is postulated and the forces operating ar'e examined, together with a method of evaluating the effect of operating variables. Practical applications of these theories to obtain optimum results on an individual separator, and various separations using a laboratoryroll type separator are described.Practical Flowsheets are of two main types, the first consisting of a series of scalping operations, the second for rougher, cleaner, and scavenger operations with middling recirculation. Some common separation problems with certain mineral associations illustrate the need for different approaches for different mineral associations. A table of mineral separation characteristics is appended, from which amenability may be tentatively estimated.INTRODUCTIONMagnetic separators are widely used, either alone or in conjunction with other wet and dry concentration devices, for the upgrading of a variety of minerals. The high standards of efficiency attainable in dry mills, together with reduced operating and labour costs, are slowly becoming apparent in a wide variety of plants. The combination of wet and dry concentration plant familiar in beach sand mining is finding application for such processes as upgrading a crushed chromite product, and production of clean scheelite,cassiterite, and other concentrates. Other dry beneficiation processes (such as the high tension beneficiation of iron ore, and the benefiGiation of asbestos) avoid the use of wet processes completely.Dry separation processes are likely to be applied more widely as their possibilities become more generally known.

ERM Consultants Pty Ltd was established in 1980 for the purpose of introducing a disciplined coal technology and power station planning service, to support Australia's efforts in establishing a major export steaming coal industry. At that time, major coal exploration programs were mounted on more than 50 potential export coal deposits with proven open-cut reserves to export 200 Mt/a of coal. The fact that Australia achieved an export trade of only 30 Mt/a, equivalent to the energy requirements for a population of around 5 million people, illustrates the very small achievement to date. The main reasons for this small export steaming coal growth have been: 1. Failure to convince potential overseas coal buyers of the benefits of coal-fired power generation, and the ability of proper power station design to overcome environmental problems, and achieve reliable operation and long life when burning Australian coals. 2. Failure to promote Australian power engineers to advise on the use of Australian coals, resulting in Northern Hemisphere power station experience dominating in market countries. 3. Failure of governments to draw on privately practising Australian power engineers and coal technologists in technical workshops, presentations and assistance to overseas countries, to ensure that personnel whose business it was to serve the follow-on needs of countries were readily available. The result of these failures has been that: 1. Only a fraction of prospective overseas coal-fired power projects have proceeded. 2. Australia has had no influence in the design of overseas power stations to ensure that potential customers would be confident that Australian coals could be reliably burnt in their boilers.

Artificial ground support has developed into a refined science over the past 20 years. From reactive support systems such as timber props and steel supports, to active systems such as roof bolts and cable anchors, ground support technology has now developed efficient systems that work well in many instances. However this paper demonstrates that there is still a long way to go to develop optimum ground support systems. Some conventional rock bolts and cable anchors emphasise their tensile capacity only, without considering other factors such as their shear strength or shear modulus, or if the support member can transfer all of its support capacity to the surrounding rock. Examples are given of the use of ground anchors with high tensile and shear capacity in underground coal mining as well as examples of slope failures in open pits where the cable bolts have remained intact because they have been unable to transfer their full capacity to the surrounding weak rock mass. For underground coal mines, speed of installation is also of primary concern, but it must also have high tensile and shear capacity both in terms of strength and stiffness. Ground support systems of the future must therefore address these problems. An innovative new rock bolt is discussed which goes some way towards solving these problems. This new rock bolt is screwed into the rock and thus has a direct mechanical interlock with the rock. Initial field results show that it has an extremely high anchor capacity and can be fully installed in approximately 30 seconds. It has considerable capacity to improve the productivity of the coal mining industry.

Australia has been slow in adopting the use of underground space as a part of our urban planning process. Australia has one of the highest levels of tunnel advance per capita per annum in the world, yet the use of underground space in our cities appears difficult for our planners and politicians to comprehend, not withstanding the general availability of good quality rock and contractor expertise in Australia. However, the lack of space in our urban areas is being highlighted as our major cities expand outwards and people and businesses gravitate towards city centres. Typical potential underground space uses include car parking, self-storage and archiving facilities, water storage, underground quarrying, small industrial facilities and another layer of traffic (electric and fuel cell) and services network. Historically, blasting in high density population areas has resulted in blast vibrations and blast overpressures exceeding the limits, which in some case have been set extremely low in terms of peak particle velocity (PPV). This makes conventional blasting difficult, often requiring low charge weights per delay and associated small blast sizes and slow advance rates. However, the introduction of new technologies, such as computer aided drilling, electronic delays and low-energy explosives has made this task considerably easier. Although more expensive than conventional blasting, excavation by blasting using these products and technologies in relatively good quality ground is believed, in most cases, to be less than the cost of mechanical excavation. In this paper, the authors look at innovative trends in underground quarrying, underground commercial space and tunnelling and put forward their concept of future excavation demand, future product requirements and technical specifications to the drill and blast community.

At September 2001 the beneficiation plant at BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Mt Whaleback mine is set to treat 9.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of iron ore, 40 per cent better than original design. This paper describes the steps, decision-making processes and innovations used to increase capacity at minimum cost. The plant was designed in 1979 to operate at 1133 t/h for 6000 hours per annum, treating 6.8 Mtpa. Sufficient suitable contact ore was unavailable and feed was finer than planned. The plant was designed with minimum surge capacity between multiple process units. It had never reached design capacity. In 1993 a study by Fluor Daniel to treat increased tonnage resulted in modifications to improve plant operations. Efforts to expand production by increasing reliability did not achieve the desired capacity. NJ Morrow (Pty) Ltd (NJM) conducted a technical audit in 1996 with process evaluation by Mineral Processors. Replacement of operator interface and PLC logic in 1997 made plant operation and diagnosis easier. Involving operators in logic development enhanced their plant knowledge. Fluor Daniel Simulation developed a simulation model of the process. Mineral Processors and NJM reviewed the model findings, recommended metallurgical improvements and developed preliminary designs and costs. BHP Engineering produced a detailed design with a cost estimate of $A34 million. After analysis and revision of the design, a $A10.4 million upgrade to 8.5 Mtpa was carried out. Detailed modifications to the process units, particularly the HM drum plant, allowed significantly higher capacities and improved metallurgical performance. The target capacity was achieved in June 2001. Further modifications are progressing to treat lower-grade ores.

Base metal sulphide mineralisation on the northern end of Great Barrier Island is spatially associated with hypabyssal intermediate to acidic intrusives, in transgressive structures in indurated, complexly deformed greywackes and argillites. Copper predominates in the mineralisation, with minor accompanying lead and zinc and also some gold and silver. However, in some cases lead or zinc may be the dominant constituent. The mineralisation is generally characterised by only narrow envelopes of weak alteration (propyliticassemblages dominated by chlorite and epidote) and with only minor amounts of quartz accompanying the sulphides, which form a cement in zones of hydraulic fracturing. There are two distinct structural settings to the mineralisation: at MinerÆs Head, in a structurally complex situation in a shell-like zone of crackling in hornfelsed greywacke, in association with both north- and east-striking fractures and rubble breccias associated with the apical part of a large intrusive; and in very narrow, but very strike-persistent, 1inear steeply-dipping fracture zones, exposed on the north coast and inland areas near Tataweka.

The East China Mesozoic metallogenic province hosts the world’s largest resources of tungsten, tin, molybdenum, antimony and bismuth, with additional important gold, silver, mercury, lead, zinc, copper, uranium and iron deposits. These deposits form several giant metallogenic belts, including South China, Middle-Lower Yangtze River Valley, East Qinling-Dabie, eastern North China Craton and North-east China. Available data demonstrate that these metallogeneic belts are the products of episodic magmatic and related hydrothermal events between ~240 and ~80 Ma. Each magmatic-hydrothermal episode has produced distinct deposit assemblages that can be readily linked to the Mesozoic geodynamic evolution of East China, involving continental collision between the North China Craton and South China Block at 220–200 Ma, oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate under the Eurasian continent at ca 170–135 Ma and post-subduction extension and lithospheric delamination at 130–80 Ma. Metallogeny in north-eastern China is more complicated due to prolonged tectonic evolution related to southward subduction of the Mongolian–Okhotsk plate and westward oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate, and subsequent continental collision and post-collisional processes.CITATION:Mao, J W, Xie, G Q and Cheng, Y B, 2015. A massive cobalt-containing pyrite orebody occurs in banded albite-quartz-biotite rocks at Thackaringa, some 30 km SW of Broken Hill. Because of the world-wide shortage of cobalt during the late 1970s, serious consideration was given to the development of a suitable flow-sheet to recover the cobalt from this ore. Details of a pressure leaching process in which more than 90 per cent of the cobalt is extracted from a pyrite concentrate are presented.

Deposits of the metalloids arsenic and antimony occur in quartz veins of mesothermal hydrothermalsystems in the South Island as arsenopyrite (AsFeS) and stibnite (Sb2S3). Arsenopyrite and stibnite occur in natural exposures in gold-mining areas, and additional arsenopyrite and stibnite have been exposed to the atmosphere by mining activity. At present the drinking water limits for dissolved As and Sb are 10 ppb and 3 ppb respectively. Sampling and analysis techniques are critical to determination of metalloid concentrations at these low levels. Endeavour Inlet in the Marlborough Sounds is an historic mining area (late 19th Century) with elevated As and Sb in waters emanating from mineralised rocks. Waters running out of abandoned adits have concentrations of As and/or Sb up to ppm levels. Natural waters have high Sb and low As, and the As levels increase markedly where anthropogenic activity has exposed rock. Changes in Sb/As ratio could potentially be used to quantify the anthropogenic component of metalloid mobility on mine sites on the 100-year time scale.

Geological maps, data, and prospectivity analysis relevant to mineral exploration in New Zealand have recently been released. Regional-scale geological mapping is increasingly available for the country through the QMAP 1:250 000 Geological Map of New Zealand programme. Published QMAP sheets Greymouth, Wakatipu, Waitaki and Dunedin cover large areas of interest for mineral exploration companies. The QMAP geological data are also available in digital form for use with other digital datasets using GIS software. Crown Minerals, in cooperation with GNS, have completed two gold prospectivity studies; the first covering mesothermal gold in the South Island, and the second encompassing epithermal gold in northern New Zealand. These studies have defined areas of interest for these two mineralisation types and assembled geological, mineral occurrence and production, geochemical, geophysical, topographic and cultural data into projects for use with GIS software. Included are the results of prospectivity modeling for gold using these data and specific mineralisation models. The prospectivity studies and relevant data are freely available on CD through Crown Minerals and are intended to encourage mineral exploration in New Zealand.

Improvements in both the operating and engineering aspects were then incorporated in the section commiss ioned in March, 1971.
