A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.Low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation at Ridge Mountain occurs within the Oligocene to Miocene volcanic rocks comprising andesite, porphyritic dacite and diatreme breccia. A diatreme breccia complex with a NE–SW elongated orientation covers an area of 3.0 × 1.7 km. Four main stages of mineralisation were identified, comprising: E–W- to NW–SE-trending quartz-chalcedony veins with disseminated pyrite, chalcopyrite and gold. N–S- to NNE–SSW-trending breccia veins with quartz matrix and disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. NE–SW-trending quartz and calcite veins with disseminated pyrite and accessory sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite and gold. ESE–WNW- to ENE–WSW-trending quartz veins with disseminated pyrite. This stage is only mineralisation that is hosted by diatreme breccia and clearly postdates.Quartz veins of the first, third and fourth stage are less than 2 m wide. Only breccia veins of the second stage are up to 10 m wide. Gold is present in all stages as microscopic inclusions in quartz and sporadically in pyrite. Macroscopic gold can be seen in the first and second mineralisation stages. Gold commonly occurs in association with sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite in the second and third mineralisation stages.CITATION:Kucera, J, 2015. This research presents a snapshot and insight into the trends, patterns, and common considerations identified in the current standing of real-time tailings dam monitoring practice. Based primarily on information derived from concurrent research by the author (in form of a Catalogue of Real-time Instrumentation and Monitoring Techniques for Tailings Dams), challenges and opportunities when transitioning to a real-time monitoring system are discussed. Learnings and key considerations between different monitoring approaches are explored, including themes of limitations and advantages that were observed consistently through global supplier feedback.

For Australian mining projects, sustainable groundwater use is typically defined as a groundwater extraction regime, measured over a specified planning time frame, which allows acceptable levels of stress and protects dependent economic, social and environmental values (DEH, 2004). This principle is compatible with most stakeholdersÆ understanding of our national environmental objectives, yet the application of this policy on a project-specific scale is not always straightforward. Three examples of sustainability issues in the management of groundwater in mining are presented. These examples highlight each of the three dependent values: environmental, economic and social.

There is a plethora of activities that have been, and continue to be, performed to improve the health, safety and well-being of workers involved in resource industry activities. These activities include implementation of risk management systems, performing risk assessments, constructing bow-ties, implementing critical control management systems, undertaking personal, process and functional safety initiatives, implementing psychological and physical health as well as industrial hygiene programs. Despite the significant work that has occurred over the last several decades, unacceptable levels of fatalities, injuries and illnesses continue to persist as evidenced by Safe Work Australia statistics.

Rock mass discontinuity mapping plays a crucial role in developing a reliable Discrete Fracture Network (DFN), providing insights into the distribution of geometrical and mechanical properties of discontinuities. This enables an accurate assessment of geotechnical infrastructure and mining excavations. Data obtained through conventional mapping approaches are substantially limited by factors such as accessibility and subjectivity. Moreover, these conventional methods may pose inherent risks due to manual techniques, exposing practitioners to potential dangers. Recent digital developments in remote surveying techniques offer opportunities for safer and more reliable rock mass discontinuity surveys. These technologies allow extensive three-dimensional surveying and the production of high-resolution 3D surface models, applicable at any time. This paper presents a workflow for digital discontinuity mapping employing drone technology and photogrammetry. Additionally, the capabilities and challenges of applying artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms in the rock mass discontinuity characterisation process are discussed.

Large-scale open cut mining in the Bowen Basin has been undertaken for over 40 years. During this period, improved mechanical capability and economics have allowed extraction to greater depths, resulting in post-mining landforms of increasing height. Rehabilitation practitioners face significant challenges in stabilising these landforms and require a comprehensive understanding of the Bowen Basin Coal Measures strata likely to be disposed of during mining. Knowledge regarding the potential behaviour of differing spoil materials (following disturbance) provides a rationale to maximise short- to medium-term surface stability of constructed landforms by identification, salvage and advantageous reuse of cladding resources as a means to minimise erosional risks.CITATION:Emmerton, B, Burgess, J, Baumgartl, T and Erskine, P, 2016. Fine (<20 µm) valuable mineral particles are difficult to recover in conventional flotation circuits. (Trahar and Warren, 1976; Jameson, Nguyen and Ata, 2007; Kohmuench et al, 2018). This leads to a loss of valuable fine mineral particles to tailings. Recovering these particles would be of economic benefit. Novel reagents, including temperature responsive polymers, for example, are being developed to improve recovery of fine valuable mineral particles by froth flotation (Ng et al, 2018a, 2018b). The approach involves selectively aggregating the valuable fine particles and making these aggregates hydrophobic, resulting in hydrophobic aggregates of appropriate size (in order of 100 microns) being amenable to recovery by froth flotation. The polymers developed have been produced at laboratory scale but not a full scale yet. The exact cost of producing such novel polymers is currently unknown, but they are likely to be more expensive than conventional reagents.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides an internationally standardised framework for estimating the environmental impacts associated with products or services (International Organisation for Standardisation, 2006). A particular strength of LCA is the ability to consider indirect impacts that occur at different stages of a product’s life (eg raw material acquisition, manufacture, use, disposal or recycling) and through its supply chain (Figure 1). A wide variety of impact categories are able to be considered by LCA, such as the potential contribution to global warming, ozone depletion, marine eco-toxicity or freshwater eutrophication.CSIRO has a long history of using LCA to compare the environmental impacts associated with alternative mining, mineral processing and metal production technologies (Haque and Norgate, 2014; Norgate and Haque, 2012, 2013). Mine and ore beneficiation wastes and smelter contaminated soils often cause phytotoxicity and threaten adverse environmental effects if not remediated. Science has clarified both the risks from soil metals and methods to alleviate those risks that can be applied at low cost. Phytoremediation is a family of plant and agronomy based technologies to deal with environmental aspects of sites requiring remediation. If valid risk assessment indicates that metals comprise risk, phytostabilisation may be used to alleviate that risk for most contaminated sites. In particular, Zn-Pb, Cu and Ni mine and smelter sites are readily remediated by making the soil calcareous and fertile, with added organic and metal sorbent amendments that include soil microbes to ‘revitalise’ the soil. In each case, the soil fertility and causes of phytotoxicity should be clarified by agricultural soil extractions, and the combination of amendments required to improve fertility and reverse phytotoxicity identified and found locally. In contrast with phytostabilisation, phytoextraction/phytomining uses rare metal hyperaccumulator plants and agronomic management to maximise annual phytoextraction of soil elements into plant shoots for harvest, ashing and use as a metal ore. Plants that accumulate more than two per cent Ni in shoots, and yield 10–20 t ha-1 dry biomass yield 200–400 kg Ni ha-1, which has value greater than all common agricultural crops. Considering the value of elements, existence of hyperaccumulator plants and demonstrated agronomic management for Ni phytomining, it is clear that mine sites and Ni mineralised subore-grade serpentine soils can be phytomined economically as an agricultural mining technology. A team developed agronomic methods and improved cultivars of Alyssum, which can be profitably grown on temperate zone Ni mineralised or contaminated soils. Plant species for tropical ultramafic soil materials have been identified. Traditional methods for calibrating the most customisable forms of GyÆs formula for the prediction of sampling variances involve a large amount of experimental work. This work is often extremely sensitive to outlier treatment and often relies on assumptions. A general methodology called æthe consistency methodÆ, however, has proven efficient in guiding these critical steps and adding objectivity to these subjective tasks. After a quick exposition of its principle, it is shown how it can also be used to reduce the amount of experimental work when dictated by budgets.

Plenary SpeechI have given considerable thought about what I might say to such a group of professionals, given that I am not an extractive metallurgist. It was immediately apparent that I would quickly be out of my depth if I tried to present some technical aspect of extractive metallurgy. So, instead I thought it might be useful to review the subject from the minerals business management point of view in order to improve understanding for the extractive metallurgist who some times finds it difficult to comprehend directions being given by management.

A new concept central to the search for sample correctness is presented. In spite of its simplicity, this concept has already unknowingly formed the implicit basis of already established, current limiting rules of use for certain types of samplers, used as mere examples in this paper. Once explicitly enunciated though, this fundamental principle gives immediate, simple and new practical rules for the design of predictably correct sampling equipment and for sampling device auditing. Examples of application are offered as an illustration, including an earlier, important, albeit unpublished, idea found in Pierre GyÆs earlier works.

There are numerous detrital diamond deposits worldwide with uncertain or disputed links to known primary kimberlite/lamproite sources. In this study, we utilise 40Ar/39Ar dating of clinopyroxene inclusions in diamonds as a provenance tool applied to the mega-placer deposits along the West Coast of southern Africa. These data demonstrate that most West Coast diamonds originated known Cretaceous kimberlites on the Kaapvaal craton with negligible input from proximal Permian glacial deposits. Refractory application in the major iron and steelmaking units are discussed. Mechanis- ms of refractory consumption as revealed by pre- vious studies are reviewed and current practice is evaluated. Deficiencies in refractories now in use are noted and some lines of development are indicated. The iron and steelmaking units discussed are generally restricted to those subject to slagging, structural change or erosion at steel or iron making temperatures, and include the Blast Furnace, Hot Blast Stoves, Hot Metal Ladles, Basic Oxygen Furnaces, Continuous Cast- ing Units and Steel Teeming Ladles.

Computer simulation is a well-accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large or complex operating systems. Less common is the use of simulation as a design aid, but FluorÆs simulation group regularly applies discrete and continuous simulation models to assist with optimisation and risk management in a wide variety of mining, mineral processing and logistics applications. To demonstrate the wide applicability of simulation modelling as a design aid, this paper describes three case examples from FluorÆs recent work that cover both discrete and continuous operations.

Development of the Davcra flotation cell has continued over the past seven years. Preliminary testwork on single cells has now been extended to a com- plete Davcra flotation circuit, to cells ranging from 5 to 400 tons per hour capacity and to cells operating on a variety of materials. Operation of both test and production units has shown the Davcra cell to be competitive with conventional flotation machines. It offers a lower capital cost installation than conventional cells and in addition has a number of. operating advantages, particularly in its adaptability to automatic control.&apos;

Truck/shovel operations constitute 50 - 60 per cent of the cost of open pit mining operations. Mining companies, therefore, are constantly seeking to close the gap between actual truck/shovel productive capacity and maximum potential truck/shovel capacity. This paper analyses the performance of a mixed truck/shovel fleet in an open cut coal mine in Australia. It analyses operating delays, and proposes a novel graphical means of determining truck-limited or shovel-limited operations. A goal seeking algorithm is advanced in order to maximise truck/shovel match factors (MF) and hence optimise fleet productivity.

All facets of current practices of cable dowelling at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited are re- viewed. This includes materials specific- ations, installation practices and design pro- cedures. Cable dowelling for cut and fill stoping, square set timber stoping, longhole open stoping and level reinforcement is considered. Installation is simple and can be mechanised to eliminate heavy lifting. Quality control is essential for optimum performance of the re- inforcement. Design patterns must consider the mining method, reinforcement economics, acceptable stability standards and mine production priorities.
