The paper, one of two papers on the Queensland Railways Brunswick Street tunnels presented at the VIII Australian Tunnelling conference, describes documentation, tendering and construction aspects.Tender documents were written to reduce the risk taken by the contractor. Details of tenders received are analysed and the changing industrial situation at that time described.Construction aspects covered include mobilisation, major equipment, tunnelling equipment and manning. Program and progress are reported including industrial relations and advance rates for Mitsui-Miike S-200 and S-65 roadheaders. Cycle times and performance in terms of cutting rate and pick wear are provided for the roadheaders.

At last year's. annual meeting of The Institute, Sir George Fisher, as President, compared it somewhat nostalgically with a meeting of its kind in the 1920s when comment was expressed on the decline of Australianmining and on the lack of new mineral discoveries.I feel that tonight's annual meeting is even more an occasion for nostalgia, for it represents the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. I hope, therefore, that I may be allowed to retrace some of the circumstances of this Institute's origin and at the same time to look at some of the broader happenings of those 75 years.From this distance in time it is, of course, much easier to get things in perspective and one of the things that compels enormous admiration in looking back over the history of our Institute is to note the qualities of foresight and keen concern for professional standards which moved the pioneers in this Institute. They had no benefit of hindsight to aid them.Just over 75 years ago, a small group of men met in Broken Hill to discus.s the possibilities of forming an association of mining engineers. The moving spirit was Uriah Dudley, our first secretary, manager of the Umberumberka mine at Silverton. The first formal move to form an association of mining engineers came from the Amalgamated Mining Managers Association of Australasia. At the time, this association was a fairly new group, being 5 years old.It had been formed to try to raise the standard of management throughout the industry. Uriah Dudley and our first provisional president, John Howell, held their first talks in 1891 and further meetings at Broken Hill followed. The inaugural meeting, attended by 200 members, was held in Adelaide in April, 1893.

British Coal has always been a big mining company and its management has been beset with many of the problems one would associate with such an undertaking. These include its accountability to Government, its market vulnerability to competing fuels and to imported coal and its relationship with its workforce but also with its own history and size. As a fragmented private industry up to and including the Second World War, it was starved of capital and its management developed an historic relationship with its workforce which was often counter productive to success. Once nationalised, it contributed greatly to post-war industrial regeneration, investment was forthcoming to reconstruct existing mines, sink new ones and to mechanise production operations. British manufacturing companies contributed to this mechanisation drive, the very success of which drove up production and productivity and against a declining market, contributed to the reduction in size of the industry. Production machinery design evolved in the 1960s with close collaboration between manufacturers and users such that an inevitable proliferation of machinery types and specifications developed to meet local needs. Longwall mining internationally outside Western Europe only became significant in the 1970s. It became apparent that international operators demanded higher levels of plant performance from British manufacturers than British Coal did. This was the birth of the "heavy duty" plant concept. As international performances outstripped our own then British Coal moved in to invest in itself, in this heavy duty. This re-investment commenced in the mid 1970s but only gained real momentum in the 1980s when it became a virtual re-equipping exercise for the whole industry.

THE Company's smelting equipment consists of three blast furnaces, supplied with blast from two sets of vertical piston blowers, each capable of delivering 8000 cub. ft. of air per minute at a pressure of 60 oz. per sq. in. Each blower is belt-driven by a 1:30 h.p. motor. The maximum speed of the blowing engine is 35 r.p.m.No. 1, the largest of the three blast furnaces, has a crucible area of 49.5 sq. ft., and measures 11 ft. 6 in. x 5 ft. at the tuyeres.From tapping floor to feed floor measures 35 ft. 9 in., and holds, when full, 100 tons of charge. Blast enters through thirteen 3-m. tuyeres at 60-oz. pressure. Working normally, this furnace is capable of treating :300 tons of charge, exclusive of returned slag and coke, per 24: hours, with an output of 100 tons of lead. Tapped slag flows into a C.l. forehearth mounted on wheels, where any lead and matte is caught, and the slag overflows into a 3-ton cast-iron pot, in which it is drawn away by an electric locomotive and poured over the dump.

This paper outlines mining practice in the South Alligator valley between 1954 and 1964. The valley is situated in the Northern Territory 130 miles south east of Darwin and trends north west. The centrally located El Sherana camp is 219 miles by road from Darwin via Pine Creek on the Stuart Highway. 64 miles of gravelled road with low level bridges and culverts which were completed in 1959, connect Pine Creek with El Sherana. This road is often impassable during severe wet season conditions. Earliest recorded production was during the years 1956-57 from the El Sherana and Palette miles, by shallow open cut and cut and fill stoping from small shafts. 4600 tons of high grade ore was processed by hand sorting of massive pitchblende followed by gravity concentra- tion. At the same time 627 tons of ore was won from a small open cut at Sliesbeck 35 miles SE of El Sherana. The second and most important phase of production was to fill two small contracts with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (U.K.A.E.A.) totalling 700 tons of U 08. About 144,000 tons of ore was mined from widely separated smal' orebodies and mining practice varied from small open cuts to gloryholes, open stoping and cut and fill stoping. In some orebodies a combination of several methods was employed to complete production. Final deliveries were made to the U.K.A.E.A. In 1964.

Worthy of note in Miss Bailey's paper are her comments on the attitudes of mining companies and their managers where women were employed, she says, "..another possible pitfall is reverse discrimination where in an effort to avoid being branded as having shown a person favouritism, supervisors end up treating the person in a manner much less than they deserve. This is manifested in denying an employee such things as challenging work, educational opportunities, promotions, or in the case of staff, fair merit increases." and further she says, "It has been observed that the treatment of women in non-traditional roles such as mining is different than for men in the same environment. There are people who treat women worse and some who treat them better simply because they are of the other sex." These statements may sound unjustified to today's audience, and whilst we need to credit pioneering women with having tolerated, understood and worked towards improving the mining culture, the move towards total inclusion of women in the workplace is still growing.

Differentiation of a basaltic (?) magma occurred in an active volcanic area during the late Miocene and Pliocene, and a change in the general mode of extrusion from fissure flow for the basalt to explosion for the andesite reflects an accompanying increasing magmatic viscosity. A caldera formed after the flow phase was completed and was filled with coarse agglomerate, much of which has a fused appearance. After an erosion interval its shape was modified and it became gradually deeper as repeated explosions from growing andesitic volcanoes caused large quantities of pyroclastic material to be deposited. At the close of this phase the floor abruptly collapsed when a, large block of the underlying crust was engulfed. The incompetent pyroclastics filling the caldera steepened in dip and the ensuing fractures were filled by the rising magma as dykes and sills and a chonolith formed below the caldera at a shallow depth. The ensuing activity reveals a further stage in differentiation and biotite is an important new ferromagnesian to be observed in the new rocks.Fracturing of the surrounding basalts was most intense in the rocks forming the periphery of the caldera where steeply and flatly dipping faults resulted from increasing horizontal pressure directed towards the caldera.Further differentiation resulted in the increased crystallization of orthoclase felspar, as evidenced by the numerous intrusives of trachy andesitic composition. Magmatic freezing caused mineralizers to accumulate at the top of the chonolith. These eventually escaped and auriferous pyrites, tellurides, quartz, and calcite were deposited in the surrounding rocks.The flatly dipping fractures are the most important and can be expected at various depths in a zone about 4,000 ft wide surrounding the caldera. Latest movement along these was controlled by magmatic consolidation rather than the shape of the caldera. Some flat faults were able to remain open during mineralization and acted as a feeder for the shallower fractures, thus limiting the depths to which the steeper dipping fractures were mineralized with the possible exception of one particular Nw.-striking lode (the Crown-Crescent).INTRODUCTIONThe gold deposits of the Tavua district were discovered in 1932 and from 1935 to June, 1961, 1,985,041 fine ounces of gold were produced from 4,202,504 tons of ore. Uranium occurrences and the probable Australian reserves are discussed and the recovery and processing methods used in treatment plants at Radium Hill and Port Pirie, S.A., Rum Jungle and Moline, N.T., and Mary Kathleen, Qid. are reviewed. The broad aspects of the application of nuclear power in Australia are then considered, and those factors of greatest significance are highlighted. It is these factors that are most likely to dictate the future role of nuclear generation in Australia. In commenting on private industry applications, the paper emphasises that each case must be considered on its own merits, and a warning is given that general statements can be misleading. In the long-term situation nuclear power is considered to be capable of playing a leading role and the discussion covers desalination and high load industries although short term applications appear difficult to justify. In non-power applications for nuclear energy reference is made to isotopes and the uses of nuclear devices in mining and civil engineering with a pertinent comment on safety.

New technology is a significant factor in the present upsurge in world, and Australian, gold extraction and production. The main technologies in current use for gold production are described, referring to overseas developments. Areas where existing techniques have shortcomings or new methods are needed are pinpointed and discussed. Much research work on gold metallurgy is under way round the world, and many new developments have potential. Many of the current research activities round the world are covering unusual and striking areas, with surprising results starting to come through. Some of the "blue sky" techniques reportedly under investigation are identified, together with consideration of when changes in technology are of value. The consequences of new technology for personnel involved in gold plant operations will be raised, including the new education now required.

Spiral separators have been used to treat heavy mineral sands in Australia for some thirty-five years. They were used as the primary treatment method until the advent of the Reichert cone, which largely replaced them, due to its compact design and relative ease of operation. Spirals continued-to be used as the final cleaning stage before dry separation of the heavy minerals as they remained the most efficient separator for this purpose.

As it is probable that a large proportion of the members of the Institute attending this meeting are connected with the metalliferous side of mining, the writer thought that, as coal and coke are required for various purposes in considerable quantities by their companies, some particulars of the coal industry might be of interest, especially when visiting such an important coal-mining centre as Newcastle. It is proposed to deal with the matter from the mining and economic point of view, as the geology has been so well and exhaustively dealt with in various publications referred to in the bibliography at the end of this paper. In the immediate vicinity of the city of Newcastle the collieries are gradually being abandoned, and during the past few years the Wickham and Bullock Island, Stockton, Hetton, Newcastle Coal Mining Company's "B," and the Australian Agricultural Co's Sea pit, have disappeared from the coal-producing list of collieries. AIl of these collieries worked the Borehole seam, from which, up to date, the largest quantity of coal has been produced in the northern district.It is the bottom seam of any present commercial value in the Upper or Newcastle coal-measures, and although the coal-in this seam has not been entirely 'exhausted in the collieries referred to, they have been abandoned for various reasons. With the expansion of magnetite projects in Australia has come the opportunity to take advantage of newer technologies that were not necessarily available when the magnetite industries of North America and Europe were maturing. One of these technologies is the IsaMill, originally developed for the economic treatment of ultra-fine grind (UFG) duties of Mount Isa Mines. As understanding of the IsaMill has increased, so too has the ability to process coarser feeds while maintaining the same energy efficiency advantage and tight product size distribution that originally made the IsaMill so attractive. In the case of magnetite the hard non-elastic ceramic grinding media is ideally suited to the grinding duty when compared to steel grinding media. The centripetal separator and naturally steep product size distribution curve provide a mill discharge that maximises the critical concentrate grade. This paper analyses the effect of the IsaMill grinding technology on the full-scale Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) magnetite operation along with pilot and lab scale demonstrations of optimisation. Issues encountered and the solutions to maximise the mill throughput and quality are examined in an effort to promote better understanding across the industry. The hydraulic-stowing mining method is most effective for mining thick coal seams. It is superior to the sliced cover- caving and artificial mining method and the fully mechanized sublevel-caving mining method for the following reasons - a much higher recovery rate is achieved, there is much less surface subsidence and roof pressure, there is no hidden danger of gob fire, and much less methane emission and coal dust problems, etc.. However, its superiority is overshadowed by its backward stowing technique which makes mechanisation of mining and stowing difficult, causes bleed water interference to production and to the environment and is uneconomic because of the high cost of stowing material. These disadvantages limited its application to coal seams that are difficult and not suitable to be mined by other mining methods. The remedy is in reforming it thoroughly to permit mining of otherwise unminable seams and this paper presents the reformation.

To a bank that granted his request for a loan, the late American humorist Robert Benchley responded, `I don't trust a bank that would lend money to such a poor risk'. This quotation is unlikely to be the norm among mining companies that secure project financing. However, a poor appreciation of one of the key risks of a mining project, the reserves, often results in disastrous financial consequences. This conclusion is the subject of the discussion and analyses presented in this paper.

The sucessful use of sewage sludge in land rehabilitation has been established and there is an abundance of overseas information on sludge reuse. Unfortunately Australia is behind Europe and North America in establishing sludge reuse policies and regulations. In Victoria the EPA has no publicised regulations and no communicated policy for sludge reuse. In the absence of sound regulations the onus is firmly on the operators of sewage treatment works to ensure land application of sludge is safe for the environment.

Hong Kong continues to display a remarkable enthusiasm for undertaking ambitious tunnelling schemes despite apparent recessions in the Asian economy. This paper provides an outline of tunnel projects currently under construction, those recently tendered and a glimpse of the extent of forthcoming projects which, according to Government sources, carry a price tag of HK$ 200B. Committed works will cost about HK$ 15B and involve a variety of TBM and drill and blast tunnels. These include the recently tendered works for KCRCÆs West Rail and MTRCÆs Tseung Kwan O railway extension, together with five no retendered TBM drives for the Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) following forfeiture of the works by the Campenon Bernard-Maeda JV in mid-1997. The JV claimed unreasonable specifications leading to unacceptable levels of water inflow and dangerous working conditions. Key technical issues that are now arising in Hong Kong are:the general use of design and build contracts for bored tunnel contracts;a trend to accept TBM options for relatively short drives in urban areas;the use of æfixed-priceÆ contracts which in the current competitive market, can encourage tenderers to take contractors to take very high risks; andthe difficulty of predicting and managing water inflows in rock tunnels.This paper also includes a new empirical method of predicting water inflows in rock tunnels, and makes recommendations for managing these on-site.

In its industrial days, Hong Kong’s mining industry was thriving, benefitting from the mineral occurrences that are related to the regional Mesozoic igneous and hydrothermal activities.Hong Kong was unique in the mining sector as it was so small in landmass but with such a rich variety of commodities discovered. There are records of commercial exploitation of tungsten, iron, lead, silver, beryl, graphite, quartz, feldspar and kaolin in Hong Kong before 1981. Of these, most of them are located in the New Territories.The Lin Ma Hang lead mine was operated in the 19th century by the Portuguese and was abandoned in 1958. The Needle Hill tungsten deposit was discovered in 1935 during construction of the Jubilee Reservoir. The Ma On Shan iron mine, which operated for 70 years between 1906 and 1976, was the largest mine in the history of Hong Kong. The Mui Wo lead-silver mine on Lantau Island can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty 400 years ago. West Brother Island, which extracted graphite from 1952 to 1973, was levelled in the 1990s to make way for the development of the airport at Chek Lap Kok.Nowadays, these mines are disused and abandoned, but this extended abstract reviews the legacy of the mining industry in Hong Kong to understand the impact that it had on techniques, the economy and culture.CITATION:Chu, J C T and Chan, J S-L, 2015. As an older member of The AusIMM, I received my 30 year æPearl AwardÆ in June and had my 50th birthday two weeks ago, I am honoured to be here today. I thank those responsible for their confidence in me and in my ability to hopefully hold captive a broad group of individuals who are here as equals, sharing an interest, no a passion in blasting technology and associated works à over the two days you will hear some excellent operational and technical presentations I am sure. But today I will digress; I want to talk about the importance of leadership and how it indeed can be the catalyst for success, improvement and change. There has been much written about leadership, its principals, the charismatic leaders, the doÆs and donÆts and so on à and I for one am not about to give you the Holy Grail; there are many experts with greater wisdom than I on this subject matter. What I do want to do is explore the application of this passion to examples within the world stage and some examples drawn from my experience in mining.

The need to improve existing metallurgical processes and to develop new processes to meet the economic challenges that lie ahead requires the application of the tools of process analysis viz. mathematical models, physical models, pilot plants, laboratory measurements and plant tests. Examples of the application of these techniques to processes are described in this paper. Several of these techniques, combined with basic knowledge, are necessary to make improvements and for existing processes this always involves plant measurements. Also because metallurgical processes include extraction, refining, alloying, casting, mechanical working and heat treatment, an interdisciplinary approach to research and development is essential. This paper argues that metallurgical engineering is a discipline that is uniquely able to encompass the broad spectrum of chemical- and physical-metallurgy processes and is therefore essential to the health of the metallurgical industry.Regrettably many metallurgical engineering departments are not offering courses on process analysis, control, optimization, etc so necessary to meet modern industrial challenges.

The present communication records the results of a research investigation conducted in the Porcupine Gold Mines in Timmins, Onto. Soon after silicosis became a compansable disease in Ontario under the Workmen's Compensation Act in 1926, the attention of mine operators and physicians was drawn sharply to the prevalence and importance of this condition in the mining industry. A number of examining centres were established in Northern Ontario by the Workmen's Compensation Board, and the yearly X-ray examination of miners was made compulsory.Although working conditions were soon improved, the mining industry realized that they were confronted by a problem demanding basic research for its final solution. The late Sir Frederick Banting had, for a number of years, been interested in silicosis, and it was upon his suggestion that an experimental investigation was undertaken at the McIntyre-Porcupine Mines Ltd., Schumacher, Ont., in November, 1932. A preliminary report of this investigation was published in 1937 by Denny, Robson and Irwin and a further report by the same authors in 1939.Accepting the theory that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid in the presence of body fluids; these authors assumed that if the solubility of the silicious material retained in the lung could be sufficiently reduced, the usual fibrotic response would be modified or would not occur. A search was therefore undertaken for some non-toxic compound that would fulfil this purpose. After investigating ma:qy substances, Denny and Robson discovered in 1936 that the presence of small amounts of aluminum powder almost completely inhibited the solubility of silicious material in vitro. An intensive study of the mechanism involved later showed that the reduction in solubility was due chiefly to a coating of the silica particle with a thin film of a gelatinous hydrated alumina which on drying formed the crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate boehmite (AI203.H20). The presence of this absorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was indicated by -staining it with aurin (ammonium salt of aurin tricarboxylic acid) and proved by Germer and Storks by means of electron diffraction patterns.Inhalation experiments with animals were at once begun, using pure quartz dust with and without aluminum powder.
