Pressure leaching of a bulk flotation concentrate prepared from a complex Cu-Pb-Zn sulphide ore was carried out at 150 and 190¦C under 1050 kPa oxygen overpressure in 1 L and 4 L titanium autoclaves to extract zinc, and to obtain residues for smelting tests and leach liquors for purification and recovery of the zinc by electrowinning. Dissolution of 95% of the zinc was achieved at both temperatures. Copper and iron dissolution and the degree of oxidation of the sulphide sulphur to elemental sulphur or sulphate depended on the temperature of the leach. At 190¦C, a jarosite (a basic iron sulphate) was the major iron-containing material in a residue that contained 17% total sulphur. Its formation was associated with dissolution of 18% of the iron. At 150¦C, oxidation of the sulphide sulphur and dissolution of the iron were significantly less. Only 7% of the iron was dissolved and a residue containing 25% total sulphur, present as a lead jarosite, lead sulphate, and elemental sulphur, was obtained. The formation of small pellets of unreacted sulphides coated with elemental sulphur caused problems during the leaching at 150¦C, and also during scale-up from the 1 L to the 4 L autoclave at 190¦C. At 150¦C the concentrate required two stages of leaching to achieve dissolution of over 90% of the zinc. These problems are discussed.

This article presents an overview of the experimental phase equilibria studies of S-containing systems (Ni-Sn-S, Cu-Sb-S, and Cu-Sn-S) and As-containing systems (Fe-Sb-As and Fe-Sn-As). These systems improve the prediction capabilities of FactSage in a 20-component ‘Cu2O’-PbO-ZnOFeO- Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2-S-(Al2O3-MgO-CrO-Cr2O3-Na2O)-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Co) system for complex pyrometallurgical operations during both refining and recycling. Experiments involved equilibration at predetermined temperatures (300–1200°C) with or without preheating, followed by rapid quenching in a brine. Quenched samples were then directly measured using an electron probe microanalyser. For the Ni-Sn-S system, liquid phases (NiS- and SnS-rich mattes and liquid metal) and solid phases (Ni1+xSn, SnS, Ni3Sn, FCC-Ni, Ni1-xS, NiS2, Ni3Sn4, SnS2, Sn2S3 and β-Ni3S2) were observed. A new Ni3Sn2S2 phase was found to melt incongruently. For the Cu-Sb-S system, liquid metal, matte, FCC-Cu, digenite, Sb, CuSbS2, Cu3SbS3 and Cu3SbS4 phases were observed. For the Cu-Sn-S system, liquid metal, matte, digenite, SnS and Cu3Sn phases were found at liquidus.

On the first of July, 2012, the Australian GovernmentÆs Clean Energy Act commenced. From this point, a price of $23/t of CO2-e will apply to facilities that trip the liability threshold. This first part of this paper concentrates on the mechanics of the Clean Energy Future legislation and how it will be applied to the mining and mineral processing industry.The second part of this paper contains analysis of the data presented for typical mine operations. Methodologies for constructing a carbon strategy are also presented. This will entail determining what the objectives of the carbon strategy are, and defining what the strategic priorities for a business should be. An action plan to address the risks identified from the Clean Energy Act is also developed as part of the strategy.Details such as the advantages and disadvantages of opting into the carbon price scheme for liquid fuels are shown. Other considerations such as the ability to acquire permits through the carbon farming initiative or through overseas clean development mechanism projects are explained.CITATION:Allen, M and Holt, P, 2012. Premier Diamond Mine is planning a new, mechanised, block cave, with a production level approximately 1000 m below surface. A high degree of tunnel damage is expected, due to stress and the relatively low in situ strength of kimberlite. An evaluation of the timing of tunnel excavation, tunnel size and spacing has been carried out to define critical parameters for planning layouts and development schedules. Extensive use has been made of three-dimensional FLAC3D numerical models, calibrated against known rock mass behaviour at 650 m depth, to examine the influence of undercut advance on production level excavations. These were able to represent the effect of stress rotation on tunnels during undercut advance and the effect of an inclined undercut. The analysis has provided guidelines that are possibly applicable to any deep block cave layout. The choice of drawpoint layout is of considerably less significance than the proportion of ground extracted on the production level elevation prior to advancing the undercut. The analysis shows that damage to production development will be potentially severe if it is all excavated prior to advancing the undercut, or is mined directly beneath the undercut face. The development of the main production tunnels alone ahead of the undercut may be feasible, but no breakaways should be put in as they appear to trigger a rapid increase in the severity of damage. The optimal sequence is when all production tunnels are developed at least 10 m in plan behind the undercut, where the induced peak field stress is less than 20 MPa and a maximum support pressure of 100 to 500 kN/m2 is require to contain movement. The assessment showed that the conditions are not significantly improved by increasing drawpoint spacing from 15 m to 18 m. The vertical spacing between the undercut and production level beneath is investigated. Provided production level development is carried out beneath the undercut, there would appear to be little benefit in increasing the vertical spacing between the undercut and production level beyond the current 15 m to 18 m.

Kidd Creek mine in north western Ontario is developing phase 1 of the deep mine project for mining between 2100 m and 3100 m below surface. Heat problems were experienced during the 2003 summer in working places about 2300 m below surface. At the time the mine had a æcold stopeÆ for cooling the air supplied to the mine below 1500 m from surface. The æcold stopeÆ is where during winter, ice is created in both the open pit and its connecting airways to the mine and used to cool air in summer. The operation and limitations of the existing cold stope were evaluated and led to the requirement for additional mechanical cooling to be available for the summer of 2004. The first stage of a surface refrigeration plant providing 7.5 MWR of cooling was approved, the compressor set was ordered in early January 2004 and the plant commissioned six months later in early July 2004. Based on the current modifications to the mining plan, further plant expansions are required in 2006 and 2009 leading to a total of 19 MWR of mechanical refrigeration and 8.5 MWR equivalent from the extended cold stope. The refrigeration system is described with emphasis on the specific adaptations necessary to suit Canadian conditions. Additional investigations were; using the refrigeration compressors in winter for heating and, extending the performance of either cold stopes or alternative ice storage systems. The winter use of refrigeration involve removing heat from the mine exhaust air to provide a cooling load and to use the hot water in the condensing circuit to heat the intake air and reduce reliance on mine air heating with natural gas. This paper follows on from an earlier one presented at the Seventh International Mine Ventilation Congress where the background and planning of the mine ventilation and cooling requirements were described for extending the mine at depth to 3100 m.

The Platreef in South Africa contains one of the world’s largest reserves of platinum group elements. One of the major platinum group minerals (PGM) components in this ore is sperrylite (PtAs₂), which has been found to be slow floating compared to the other PGMs. In a study aimed at determining the reasons for the poor floatability of sperrylite and to improve its recovery, tests were carried out to determine the interactions of the mineral with a range of standard and novel collectors. Microflotation tests were carried out to determine the hydrophobicity of the minerals before and after adsorption of collectors. In addition, experiments were carried out to determine the enthalpy and extent of collector adsorption on the minerals and to investigate electrochemical interactions between sperrylite and selected standard collectors. The results indicated that poor collector adsorption was the major cause for the poor floatability of sperrylite. Sperrylite had both poor natural (14.5 per cent) floatability and collector-induced flotation recoveries, the highest recovery of 26 per cent being observed using PNBX collector at pH 9. Moreover, the rest potential tests showed that the interaction of sperrylite with standard collectors such as xanthates was poor. The decrease in potential after the addition of the standard collectors ranged from 7.9 mV to 24.9 mV under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, sperrylite rest potentials remained unchanged with a change in pH from basic to acidic, indicating its resistance to surface alteration. Surface alteration of the minerals is key for the chemisorption of collectors to take place on the mineral surface. This was further emphasised by flotation recoveries at low pH, where only certain collectors responded positively to a decrease in pH and these were shown to have undergone a structural change. This work has highlighted the difficulties associated with sperrylite flotation and provides some direction for future research.

"Characterisation of sulfide minerals (eg pyrite, sphalerite) in historic tailings can assist in determining whether there are economic benefits of reprocessing such materials using modern metallurgical practices. In addition, there are associated environmental advantages if the historic tailings are actively generating acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). At the Old Tailings Dam (OTD), Savage River, Western Tasmania, 38 Mt of pyritic tailings were deposited from 1967 to 1982; consequently it has been recognised as an AMD source. Long-term management options considered for this site have included the establishment of either a water, hard-engineered or vegetation cover. However, due to geotechnical challenges posed and the lack of success demonstrated by previous pilot studies, these strategies have not been implemented. Instead, resolving the pyrite chemistry can allow for a first-pass assessment of whether reprocessing these tailings is a feasible option as part of a long-term management strategy for this legacy site.Tailings samples (n = 144) were collected across the OTD from up to 2 m depth from five facies (A–E), and four zones (1 to 4; defined by hydrological regime and grain size). These materials were subjected to acid-base accounting (ABA) and mineralogical evaluations to determine their geoenvironmental characteristics. Following this, 26 samples were selected for in-depth laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) investigations to evaluate pyrite chemistry across different tailings facies. The results revealed enrichment of Co and Ni in these materials. Specifically, Co content was up to 3.0 wt per cent, particularly within facies C to E, and Zones 3 and 4. Cobalt is recognised as a critical metal, therefore, reprocessing should be considered as a future rehabilitation option for the OTD, pending resource definition using established codes and practices.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A, Fox, N and Jackson, L, 2016. The Selwyn gold-copper operation is wholly owned and operated by the Arimco mining group. The mine is located 150 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. The primary extraction method for the gold-copper 251 orebody is by sub level open stoping. Secondary extraction is from the mass blasting of the remaining crown and rib pillars. The final mass blast of the 251 orebody occurred in December 1993. This paper details the design and execution of that firing.

The PT Freeport Indonesiaæs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) copper deposit is located in the province of Irian-Jaya, Indonesia. Currently, a block cave mine is being developed around this deposit. Production is scheduled to start the fourth-quarter of year 2000 and to ramp up to 25 000 tpd by year 2003. The air quantity requirement for this mine is equal to 780 m3/s. To supply this quantity, the mine will require five centrifugal fans (one 450 and four 750 kW fans). This study summarises the technical aspects related to the installation and commissioning of two of these fans. The fans were installed on the surface in parallel arrangement with two others. Each has a design capacity of 240 m3/s of air at 2.2 kPa of static pressure. The study presents the installation details from the underground shaft excavation and portal development through fan testing and commissioning. It also presents the results of a monitoring system that was installed to determine the fan duties.

A likely increasingly important pathway for future low-carbon ironmaking and steelmaking is the combination of gas-based direct reduction with electric furnace steelmaking (DRI-EAF route), or with electric smelting (DRI-ESF route). In the DRI-EAF route, the gangue that is present in the iron ore is fluxed and removed as slag in the melting (steelmaking) step. This is in contrast with integrated steelmaking, in which the gangue is removed as part of blast furnace ironmaking. For DRI-EAF steelmaking, the amount and composition of slag depend on the iron ore composition, flux additions and iron yield. Slag volume and composition affect phosphorus removal, foaming behaviour and the process energy requirements. In this work, heat data from a year of DRI-EAF production was analysed to test whether the expected relationship between slag volume and electricity consumption for EAF steelmaking was observed. The data include slag analyses (one sample per shift), and heatlevel information on all inputs, final steel temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration, electricity consumption, tapped steel mass and tap-to-tap time. In analysing the data, the slag volume was estimated from the assayed slag CaO concentration and CaO inputs to the EAF. The expected effect of slag volume on steelmaking energy consumption was calculated with a mass and energy balance, considering the heat of mixing of the slag. The calculated energy requirement of slag formation is in line with previous estimates reported in the literature.

Waste waters from mine sites may be screened for all constituents of significance as a first step in establishing water quality criteria for protection of aquatic ecosystems. Inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) offers the capability to screen water samples and digest solutions for virtually all elements in the periodic table. This technique is therefore able to identify elements whose concentrations are elevated in waste waters and may be rarely present in background surface or ground waters. Such elements may be present in waters at only a few ¦g/L. ICP-MS has sufficient sensitivity to detect sub-¦g/L or even ng/L levels of many elements. Waste waters from most mining activities in the Northern Territory have been examined by ICP-MS. The concentration data provide the basis of a contaminant data base. The data can show specific tracers in the ore or mineral itself, subsequently found in waste water. An example is the presence of rhenium in uranium ore. Such trace elements may be present in soluble or insoluble chemical forms and are more useful as indicators when soluble and exemplifying conservative chemical behaviour. The approach described, based on ICP-MS screening of mine site waste waters, together with general physico-chemical variables, provides the most comprehensive means yet available of selecting variables for monitoring programs and ensures that key elements and/or their chemical species are not excluded from monitoring programs.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

Mineral extraction is facing the twin challenges of finite resources and increasing environmental and economic costs. Society’s growth is matched by an increase in demand for the earth’s resources. It is incumbent on us as contemporary mining professionals to promote and facilitate ethical and efficient practices. Technological developments have and will continue to allow a decrease in viable cut-off grades, creating new economic opportunities from deposits that were previously uneconomic. Mining low-grade deposits however, even with perfect recoveries, will have a significant environmental cost for the metal won. The greatest opportunity to increase metal with the least environmental cost is to increase the metal yield from existing mines. The determination of mining polygons is a critical juncture where rock is typically subjected to the binary grading of either ore or waste. This is undertaken using a number of factors, such as the mining equipment being used and the recovery in the processing plant. Traditionally, mining polygons were generated on the in situ grade control model. This ignores the complex differential blast dynamics that occur during blasting. Two opportunities exist to improve metal yields: optimise the blast design to achieve the post-blast muck pile that will support the greatest outcome; and generate optimised polygons on the post-blast muck pile. A data set from a Canadian Gold deposit is used to demonstrate the potential benefit of iterative blast movement modelling and grade control polygon optimisation on metal yield. The impact of blasting on the total recoverable metal is presented, highlighting blast design as a critical process in the mining value chain.

BHAS, together with the G.K. Williams Laboratory, and Ausmelt Pty. Ltd., has examined a number of possible alternatives to conventional silver cupellation in gas fired reverberatory furnaces. Of these alternatives, a Sirosmelt furnace was preferred for both technical and economic reasons. Small scale work on Sirosmelt processes was carried out at the G.K. Williams Laboratory at Melbourne University in 1985/86. Pilot scale work was carried out at the Ausmelt plant in Melbourne in July 1987. Board approval for construction of a full size plant was received in October, 1988, and construction of the plant is currently underway. The plant is expected to provide significant savings in operating costs and silver inventory. Hygiene around the furnace should also be greatly improved. An increase in cupellation rate of at least ten times is expected, compared with the conventional reverberatory furnace.

Mt Todd lies towards the south end of the Pine Creek Geosyncline, sandwiched between the Cullen Batholith and the Edith Falls Basin, in an area of regionally metamorphosed sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Batman deposit, some 3 km west of Mt Todd is a sheeted quartz vein system hosted within greywackes of the Palaeoproterozoic Burrell Creek Formation (Finniss River Group). The gold-bearing quartz veins, trending 010¦-020¦ and dipping 60¦-70¦E, are commonly 0.5 to 5 cm wide and occur at intervals which are from 10 cm to 1 m apart. Gold tends to be restricted to the quartz veinlets and immediately adjacent country rock. Grade Control utilises two 4 m 'collar' samples which are collected from each 8 m production blasthole. The irregular distribution of the quartz veins and erratic gold mineralisation has resulted in a disseminated 'salt and pepper' type of gold occurrence, with only a poorly defined footwall. Delineation of ore and waste blocks for mining uses an approach which combines the smoothing effect of kriging with a pragmatic view of the raw data. Large ore blocks with simple geometry help to minimise mining dilution, reduce block variance and give good reconciliations to interpreted ore tonnes and grade. Daily mine face advance is reported against truck counts and provides continual comparison with budgeted production. All data processing uses Gemcom software, together with Lotus spreadsheets.

Most orebodies have cross-sections of less than I km2 and hence do not offer a particularly large target for exploration. Fortunately, although in the geological record ore deposits are small and rare and result from the exceptional coincidence of certain geological processes, these processes are mappable on a much larger, district to regional scale and constitute a mineral system in which the ore deposit is the central feature. A mineral system can therefore be defmed as 'all geological factors that control the generation and preservation of mineral deposits, and stress the processes that are involved in mobilising ore components from a source, transporting and accumulating them in more concentrated form and then preserving them throughout the subsequent geological history'. The mineral system concept emphasises that for many ore deposit types, although economically viable mineralisation may only occur on a scale of say, hundreds of metres, the total system offluid-rock interactions that led to ore formation can extend over a distance of tens to hundreds of kilometres around the deposit. When mapped out, the total mineral system provides a far larger exploration target than the actual ore deposit itself. Important geological factors defining the characteristics of any mineralising system include: I. sources ofthe mineralising fluids and transporting ligands; 2. sources ofthe metals and other ore components; 3. migration pathway; 4. thermal gradient; 5. energy source; 6. a mechanical and structural focusing mechanism at the trap site; 7. chemical and/or physical traps for ore precipitation. Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013. Gold dissolution by cyanide requires the presence of oxygen which is usually supplied by sparging compressed air into the gold containing slurry. For those ores that contain certain obnoxious substances that consume oxygen, maintaining the required minimum level of dissolved oxygen can be troublesome. One of the most economical solutions to the problem of low dissolved oxygen, especially in plants that have air compressors installed, is to enhance the rate of oxygen mass transfer. The oxygen mass transfer rate was measured in a two phase system using two different sparger arrangements, and with addition of a frother that is known to reduce the bubble size produced by the sparger. The common sparger system was shown to be inefficient compared with a readily available but under utilised method of gas dispersion which introduces air directly below the reactor turbine. Transfer of this technology to an operating plant confirmed the beneficial effect of the improved sparger system. The addition of the frother did decrease the bubble size, but it also reduced the oxygen mass transfer rate.

The phrase "Total-Energy" has, during the past few years, become widely used to describe a wide range of very different operations. However, if accurately described they all have one basic factor in common - energy usage is optimised with the prime mover being powered by gas or oil to generate shaft horsepower and the products of combustion being put to some use. The item which distinguishes a Total Energy system from any other engine or turbine driven project is that orate pains are taken to utilize the waste heat, whether this be in the form of exhaust gases and/or engine jacket ling water. n areas where grid supplies of electricity are readily available, the economics of most projects undoubtedly hinge upon the successful application of waste heat. However, there has been a growing awareness of other benefits, such as reliability of supply, which can be incorporated into the system.
