The Karangahake epithermal Au-Ag mine consists of two main lodes, the Maria and the Welcome/Crown hosted in Miocene andesites. Mineralisation is strongly constrained to major structures and is genetically linked to dynamic tectonic processes. Two main periods of faulting are represented in the deposit: 1. NE striking right-lateral/normal oblique linked spatially and temporally with the mineralising system, and 2. ESE striking right-lateral/normal oblique post-mineral faulting that displaces the lodes. Paleostress analyses performed on a limited kinematic data set indicate NW-SE extension during the formation of the vein system. Veins and lodes strike NNNE and accordingly contain a strike-slip component. The kinematics of vein formation at Karangahake is broadly consistent with that of other deposits within a NNE-trending belt of deposits. Oblique shear on deflecting structures will create zones of compression and dilation. Dilatant zones created on steep structures create fluid pathways potentially focussing large volumes of fluid from deep parts of the system into dynamic structures.

Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is a sea floor resource exploration and development company focused on developing the Solwara 1 Project, a copper-gold sea floor massive sulfide deposit in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea, for which it holds a mining lease and associated environment permit.During the environmental impact assessment and project development phase, Nautilus completed a number of hydrodynamic modelling exercises in order to predict the nature, volume and extent of the plumes likely to be generated by the sea floor mining tools and return water discharge at the sea floor.The modelling was conducted using the suspended sediment fate model (SSFATE), developed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and RPS APASA engineering consultants. The SSFATE model was originally developed in order to predict and manage dredging plumes, and has since been adapted for deep ocean sea floor mining. The model uses a Lagrangian approach to remove the limitations of grid resolution, and simulates far-field effects of sedimentation plumes by assuming that the average transport and turbulence associated with currents are dominant over the initial turbulence at the release point. The random walk procedure utilised in the model tracks particle size classes as they disperse and settle, and also takes into consideration any re-suspension that may occur following settlement (RPS APASA, 2014).CITATION:Grogan, R, 2016. The aim with this paper is to discuss experiences from the ongoing research project ‘Attract: A roadmap to attractive, inclusive, and safe mining workplaces’. The project’s aim is to analyse possibilities, effects, and consequences of the green and digital transformation in the Swedish mining industry from workplace, socio-technical and gender equality perspectives. The research project (2022–2025) at Human Work Science at Luleå University of Technology is financed by the strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation (a joint venture by the national research funds Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency). The project includes a multidisciplinary research group of five senior researchers and five PhDstudents and a broad repertoire of methods, eg literature reviews, qualitative interviews with both managers and workers, workplace observations, workshops, surveys, and project seminars where the researchers and the company representatives together analyse the results. One important part of the project is the applied approach where the researchers work together with two mining companies and one subcontractor company. The project has two parallel main subprojects.

Laboratory and pilot plant investigations aimed at recovering gold as an electroformed sheet from gold eluate and gold leach solutions and slurries are discussed. The electrolytic test work undertaken makes use of high surface area electrodes, in particular nickel-chrome foam metal and activated carbon, as well as ultrasonic activation. The process involves initial gold electrowinning (or adsorption onto activated carbon), followed by gold electroforming, both operations being carried out in a specially designed reactor. The pilot plant work mainly involved the treatment of gold eluate solutions from a South African gold mine containing 600 mg/L Au: some tests were also carried out on gold leach solutions containing 6 mg/L Au. In the former case, very efficient gold extraction onto the foam metal cathode was achieved using electrolysis combined with ultrasonics. The polarity of the gold-loaded cathode was then reversed and, using a replacement electroforming electrolyte, gold was electroformed in situ onto a polished stainless steel mandrel, from which gold sheet was subsequently removed. In the case of leach solutions, pilot plant tests confirmed laboratory findings that in the presence of calcium (resulting from the lime used during the leaching process) no electrowinning is possible. Laboratory tests showed, however, that when sodium (in the form of NaOH or Na2CO3) is added to the leach solution, electrowinning can indeed take place. Alternatively, if a special activated carbon electrode is used (without current), the non-ionic calcium aurocyanide complex is adsorbed on to the activated carbon. When a gold-loaded activated carbon electrode is made anodic in a gold electroforming electrolyte, gold electroforming is feasible, although the efficiency is very low. The possible implications of these developments for gold recovery are further examined.

The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is the focus of a world-class effort in providing technical solutions to the minerals industry. The 85 FTE staff are drawn from the CentreÆs five joint venture research partners comprising universities (Curtin, Murdoch and Qld) and government research agencies (CSIRO and WA Dept of Industry and Resources). There are also 12 industry partners, representing most of the leading mining companies in the world. Around 45 postgraduate students, mainly PhDs, make a significant contribution to the research effort. Total annual expenditure on R&D is around $17 million.Hydrometallurgy activities encompass both fundamental and applied research across the alumina, gold and base metal sectors. The Centre is now growing its client base into overseas markets, particularly North America, South Africa and Europe. Quality, strategic R&D by the Parker Centre is seen by the industry as an attractive investment. A recent survey of the industry revealed an estimated ten-fold return based on direct costs of research to the client. In addition, the Parker Centre has a strong commitment to education of postgraduate students wishing to enter the mining industry as well as providing specialist courses for those technical professionals already employed in the industry. The wide range of employment opportunities in the mining industry is reflected in the diversity of the disciplines amongst the CentreÆs research team, eg extractive metallurgy, chemistry, biotechnology, physics, engineering, molecular modelling, microscopy, geology and computational fluid dynamics. How does an atomic force microscope and molecular modelling improve our ability to control gypsum scaling or understand crystallisation of alumina in a Bayer plant? Can a biologist contribute to the problem of the slow leaching of copper from chalcopyrite? Why are computational fluid dynamics and lasers the basis of understanding how to make thickeners work more efficiently. Can you combine a PhD or Honours degree with industry experience? What is crud and why is nickel stressed? These are typical examples of the CentreÆs research activities and demonstrate the contributions of its multi-disciplinary teams which keep the Australian mining industry at the cutting edge of advanced global technology.

In recent years, Chinese companies have invested billions in Australian mineral exploration, development and processing. In 2008 - 2009 alone, the Foreign Investment Review Board approved $26.4 B of investment. Much of this investment has been by merger and acquisition (M&A) of Australian resources companies. This paper sets out to investigate how Australian CEOs perceive the cultural and institutional challenges in operating Australia mining companies recently acquired by Chinese interests. HofstedeÆs cultural dimensions and institutional theory from management science were used to develop a structured questionnaire, which was subsequently used to conduct telephone interview of the CEOs of six recently acquired mining companies. Analysis of the survey results indicated that, in all cases, few changes were made to the operational management of the Australian companies post-M&A. The three major benefits for Australian companies as a result of the M&A are the ability to; access long-term debt at lower cost; secure finance for growth plans in financially volatile times; and maintain existing management structures. Some perceived negatives involved longer and more convoluted decision-making as a result of Chinese state approval required for investment decisions. The study identified building æGuanxiÆ and an aversion to losing æfaceÆ as important cultural learnings for Australian CEOs. Expanding rock bolts anchor within a rock mass more efficiently than non-expanding varieties. This is of great importance in weak ground conditions, where grouted friction bolts perform less efficiently than in good ground conditions. Filling a Split Set with demolition concrete has been shown to double the load-carrying capacity when compared to conventional use of Split Sets. This report details verification of these results by installing and pull-testing 14 Split Sets of varying grout conditions within in a fault zone. These Expanding Split Sets achieved loads double and triple that of ungrouted and normally grouted conventional Split Sets. A literature review and chemical analysis were conducted to understand the expansion process better. It was found that 20 per cent more calcium is included in expanding cement, which is responsible for its growth. Factors most affecting the expansion process were identified. Furthermore, the expansion rate of a bolt outside a borehole was measured and 6 mm of expansion across its diameter was found. The compressive properties of the cement were compared with other types, due to expanding cement becoming uncohesive after the expansion process is complete. When confined within a Split Set, compression testing demonstrated that this grout is just as strong and rigid as normal grout. Finally, the bolts were tested by shear and it was found that the Expanding Split Set (ESS) has a similar shear capacity to grouted Split Sets, which is 70 per cent higher than that of ungrouted Split Sets. These results enabled the mechanism for improved performance in weak ground conditions to be verified. Expanding grout will expand the Split Set into its borehole of varying diameter and lock it into place, creating increased friction and resistance to pull-out. The cohesive zone in the blast furnace is largely affected by the softening and melting behaviour of ferrous burden because of its vital role in the blast furnace process. The Visual High Temperature Methodology (VHTM) has been given to study the softening and melting behaviour of sinter, two kinds of lump ores and acid pellet intuitively. Before softening, both two kinds of lump ore swelled and more serious for lump ore B because of its denser structure than lump ore A. The softening and melting temperature intervals are different from one another and this phenomenon contributed to the gas permeability of ore layer in the cohesive zone since the ‘ore window’ has formed. Besides, the softening and melting behaviour of mixed burdens have been studied, where it has been found that the softening and melting characteristics of mixed burden A (consisting of sinter and lump ore A) is better than mixed burden B (consisting of sinter and lump ore B) and mixed burden C (consisting of sinter and acid pellet) despite the poorest characteristics of lump ore A. The reason is that the high temperature interactivity between lump ore A and sinter is much better than lump ore B and acid pellet. The high temperature interactivity is mainly influenced by the chemical compositions, porosity and contact condition. The world-class iron ore mines at Mt Whaleback, Torn Price and Paraburdoo located in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia must mine the Mt McRae Shale to obtain high grade ore from the Dales Gorge Member of the Brockman Iron Formation. The Mt McRae Shale contains a black pyritic shale lithology that reacts with ammonium nitrate-based explosives. This paper provides an overview of the problems associated with mining this reactive rock type as well as the development of a comprehensive procedure to safely and efficiently blast, excavate and dispose of this material. The strategy used to develop the procedure involved raising the awareness of relevant site personnel to the risks associated in mining the Black Pyritic Mt McRae Shale, obtaining the commitment of these personnel that a detailed procedure was required and that any procedure developed must be followed, otherwise the potential risks such as premature detonation were high. It was also necessary that an on-going training program be implemented so that all relevant new employees would be educated as to the reasons for adhering to the Black Pyritic Shale Procedure.

Supplementary sampling of particulate mass concentration, the number concentration and the average particle diameter of nanoparticles using a TSI Dust-Trak DRX Aerosol Monitor, Naneos Partector 2 has been conducted. The aim of this study was to evaluate suitability of the instrument for long-term monitoring of diesel particulate matter (DPM) at conditions of polymetallic mines. Sampling was conducted in an area of the active ore heading, requiring the use of a diesel-powered face haul-age loader R1700 and a mine truck Caterpillar AD-45. The sampling was done for 126 minutes at a distance of 30 metres from the mine face. Results of this field work can be used to expand the sampling program to other mines. Expected outcomes of this study are to develop costeffective DPM control strategies, improve mine ventilation, and protect mineworkers’ health.

Ranger Uranium Mine is located within the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory of Australia and surrounded by the World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park (Figure 1). The mining operation is currently producing about 1500 tonnes of uranium oxide annually, as well as considerable volumes of waste rock, low grade ore and tailings. The rehabilitation of the project should ensure that the radioactive mill tailings and other contaminants remain contained for at least 200 years, as required by the existing guidelines (Commonwealth of Australia, 1987). The present uranium mining operation is regulated by the Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy who must refer to the Environmental Requirements when considering regulatory options. On 30 June 2020, the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority (the Authority) superseded the Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner as the independent overseer of Victoria’s declared mine rehabilitation. Currently, only the Latrobe Valley’s three brown coalmines are declared, with each mine at a different stage of rehabilitation and closure planning: Hazelwood ceased mining in 2017, Yallourn is scheduled to end mining in 2028 and Loy Yang in 2035. The three declared mines are very large, close together (Figure 1) and present significant environmental risks that must be mitigated during rehabilitation and post closure. In addition to fire risks, the brown coalmines are inherently unstable and require continuous monitoring and management of ground movements and groundwater pressures. Since 2007 several damaging events have occurred, highlighting the difficulties of achieving long-term stability, even with good landform design and rigorous ground control management plans

This paper presents a brief account of the plant which has been developed at Port Pirie to recover, by vacuum distillation, the greater part of the zinc content of desilverized lead. The present plant is an experimental unit, which is run in conjunction with the normal refinery practice, but can be cut out of the circuit. It will shortly be dismantled and duplicate units will be built on the sites chosen for the final plant installation.The unit described here has treated flows of 16 to 37 tons per hour of desilverized lead, to recover 90 to 95 per cent of the zinc contained in it. It is not intended here to detail all aspects of the vacuum dezincing operation, nor the developments which precededthe adoption of this design. The essential features of the present plant will be described and, where these are peculiar to the present experimental location, the intended alteration for the final plant will also be mentioned. OUTLINE OF PLANT AND PROCESSLead issues from the continuous desilverizing kettle at about 350° C. containing about 0·57 per cent Zn. It is conveyed by a tiled launder to the preheater, where it is heated to 580-620° C.Hot lead from the preheater enters the vacuum vessel via a barometric leg. From a reservoir holding about 19 tons of lead it falls by gravity in a thin film exposed to high vacuum (20-50 microns)3 and leaves the vessel via a barometric leg, entering the lead pot. The lead leaves this pot at 540-560° C., containing 0·03 to 0·06 per cent Zn, which is removed, together with residual antimony of 0.02 to 0·06 per cent, by a separate final refining process.

Quang Ninh province is the most significant coal producing region in the north of Vietnam. The Nui Beo Coal Company (NBCC) operates open pit mines in Quang Ninh province and the waste overburden produced is dumped as sidehill fill in the Chinh Bac waste dump site. In the past, no special consideration has been given to the environmental impacts during the dumping operations. The mine waste is transported in trucks from the mine site to the dumping site and the loading, hauling and dumping operations are the main sources of dust emission. Rain events, especially during the rainy season, cause the generation of contaminated surface water as well as seepage of water through the dump at a number of locations. The existence of cracks at the top of the dump can pose serious stability problems with heavy rain events leading to failure of slopes which can potentially disturb vast areas of land currently used for agricultural purposes and human settlement. For sustainable development at the Chinh Bac waste dump site in the future, apart from the social and economic considerations to be assessed, there is an absolute necessity for environmental protection measures to be in place both during and after the dumping of the mine waste overburden. Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam (RAME) is working to develop and implement concepts for the mitigation of environmental problems emerging from dust, contaminated water and lacking slope stability to ensure successful rehabilitation of the coal mine waste dumps in the north of Vietnam. Within the framework of RAME, the Institute of Mining Engineering I (RWTH Aachen University) is managing and working to develop the stabilisation concepts for the solid mine waste dump in collaboration with the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering (RWTH Aachen University), Brenk Systemplanung and the Vietnamese group of companies VINACOMIN (Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group). The most economical and environmentally sound operations, as well as locally adaptable environmental protection measures, are essential for the sustainable development of the dumping operations at Chinh Bac dump. This paper describes the dump site and the sustainable development possibilities with an emphasis on the environmental protection and stability problems at the Chinh Bac waste dump.

Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives are unstable in hot, reactive sulphide-rich ground at Mount Isa. Under certain conditions associated with background heat, moisture, and chemical impurities from natural oxidation, ANFO composites in contact with hot ground disproportionate and the ammonium nitrate can undergo rapid exothermic reactions with sulphide.Reactions can occur in confined charges from prolonged contact with reactive sulphides, or by contamination with sulphide in loading. Partial interaction can result in misfires or premature detonation. Spilt, scattered and unpropagated explosive will undergo further reaction in sulphide-rich environments. ANFO-sulphide interaction is invariably exothermic and causes an irreversible chemical transformation of the ore.The heat generated during reaction may be dissipated, heating the environment, or rapidly accumulated to yield hot spots or areas in excess of 400°C. These can result in forced ignition of bulk sulphide and sustained combustion.Thermal analysis was used to define the critical conditions for ANFO-sulphide interaction and sulphide combustion.The occurrence of incandescent ore is attributed to the thermal interaction between exothermic hydrolysis oxidation, ANFO-sulphide, and combustion processes.Chemical agents and control methods have been developed to prevent ANFO-induced oxidation and combustion.

A test on Taylor's rule of mine life using published data on open pit porphyry copper mines confirmed that mine life is, on average proportional to the fourth root of reserve tonnage. Deviations from this rule-of-thumb occur to a large extent as variations between regions that are qualitatively explained in terms of differences in grade, infrastructural needs or special taxation effects.

"The requisite for maintaining optimal carbon concentration levels in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit is of paramount importance in the prevention of gold losses. The process’s ability to recover gold from the aqueous phase is primarily dependent on the carbon loading profile of the CIL train.Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) have over 2015 tested the Mintek online carbon concentration wmeter (C2 Meter) suitability for effective carbon concentration measurements in their CIL circuit compared to the standard method where the readings are taken twice a shift by the operations staff. The C2 meter works by passing a 1MHz ultrasonic signal through a slurry containing carbon where there is a relationship between the carbon concentration and the attenuation of that signal.It also highlighted another area where the C2 meter could be implemented at NBG whereby the instrument can be as a cautionary device for carbon losses in place of carbon safety screens.Citation:McCamley, C, 2016. The global recession of the 1980s drove commodity prices down and intensified cost competition. The 1990s saw a restructuring of the mining industry with the survivors adopting new technology, significantly increasing workplace productivity and reducing capital and operating costs. Major changes in mining industry business strategies evolved in the late-1980s including the development of miner - supplier - manufacturer - partnerships, cultural changes in work practices and common goals between the partners to reduce the cost of production. These industry trends are putting new demands on mining machine manufacturers and dealers both on the `hard' side of the machine business, such as research and product development programs, and on the `soft' side in terms of business processes, use of human resources and communication. The paper describes several mining industry trends as identified by a large supplier to the industry, and discusses the impact they are having, and will have, on mining machine development and the provision of product support services to the industry.

Long-hole directional drilling for in-seam exploration was introduced to New Zealand at Huntly West Mine in 1989. Following the success of this initial drilling program the Coal Corporation of New Zealand (CoaICorp) purchased its own drilling equipment and proceeded to adopt the technique with in-housetraining. From July 1991 to September 1992 a total of 15 455 metres was drilled at Huntly West Mine. During this period several modifications were made to the drilling technology to suit the ground conditions. The resulting interpretations of the drill information enabled reliable seam definition to be incorporated in mine planning. Since January 1993, the technique has been transferred to the Huntly East Mine to assist with seam definition for the planned development westwards under the Waikato River. The benefits of this drilling technique to coal mine planning are now well documented in Australia and New Zealand as well as other overseas countries. The possibilities of adapting the long-hole drilling technique to hard rock applications has been illustrated recently with successful cross-measure drilling at Huntly East Mine.

As part of its operations Hamersley Iron operates a heavy medium Concentrator to upgrade low grade, unsaleable iron ore to produce saleable lump and fines products. Firstly, the attempts at delivering a blended feed in both chemical and physical characteristics are presented. Improvements in blending controls are shown to have given process performance improvements. Secondly, improvements to the feed preparation section are detailed. These alterations are providing a much cleaner feed to the subsequent processing stages.
