Most of the world's economically significant volcanogenic massive sulphide (VSM) deposits are considered to have formed in submarine arc and backarc settings. While the Kermadec-Tonga arc is an excellent example of an intra-oceanic arc setting, it remains largely unexplored in terms of submarine mineral resources. More than half of this arc (~1400 km of the >2500-km-long feature) lies within the EEZ of New Zealand, where it is defined by at least one sub-aerial and 33 submarine volcanoes. The NZAPLUME (New Zealand American PLUme Mapping Expedition) cruise of March 1999 provided a systematic assessment ofhydrothermal activity on the southernmost 13 submarine volcanoes along the southern Kermadec arc. Using prospecting techniques based on the physical and chemical detection of hydrothermal plumes, we discovered that more than half (7 of 13) of the southern Kermadec volcanoes host one or more active hydrothermal systems at depths ranging between <200 to 1800 m. Chemical results show that the fluids discharged are compositionally diverse among volcanoes and between sites at a single volcano. Plumes over more than half of the volcanoes are gas-rich (He, CO2, H2S) relative to mid-ocean-ridge (MOR) plumes. In addition, most sites are highly enriched in Fe, yielding Fe/Mn values that far exceed those for MORs. One interpretation consistent with these observations is compositional overprinting by addition of magmatic fluids, which are typically highly enriched in gaseous and ionic components. Regardless of the source, it is clear that the ligands (HS-, Cl-) required to efficiently transport base (e.g. Cu, Zn, Pb) and precious (e.g. Au, Ag) metals to the seafloor are abundant in Kermadec arc fluids. We conclude that modem analogs of VMS deposits are likely forming at multiple sites along the Kermadec arc and within the EEZ of New Zealand.

The study of air-core dynamics in hydrocyclone operation is essential for predicting separation efficiency in mineral processing. Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) allows non-invasive measurements of hydrocyclone internal flow dynamics. Existing regularisation methods such as Gauss-Newton and TV norms rely on optimisation techniques which have very high computational cost for very fine meshes. In contrast, the monotonicity method has much lower computational cost as it does not solve such minimisation problems. In this paper, results from the monotonicity method, Gauss-Newton (GN) (Tikhonov) and Total-Variation (TV) norm-based minimisation methods for estimating the air-core diameter in hydrocyclones are compared. We study these methods on the laboratory hydrocyclone experimental two-phase flow data. The results obtained are validated against High-speed video (HSV) imaging and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results. The results on different mesh sizes, in particular for very fine meshes with the number of cells ranging from 30 000 to above 100 000 are also investigated. The data used in this study is obtained from ITS Z8000 ERT system. This system does not measure the voltages on the current carrying electrodes. Since these voltage values are required for the monotonicity method, we implement an interpolation method to compute them. The results show that the monotonicity method provides a closer approximation of the interface between air and the water phases.

Silver is one of the three major metals produced from the Broken Hill mines. The accurate determination of the silver in these ores, therefore, is of economic importance.With due appreciation of the divergence of opinion of many who are interested in the subject of the determination of silver, the writer has been prompted to present the results of some recent experiments on silver losses during cupellation and conclusions from these experiments in the present paper. The losses of silver in the fire assay for this metal are due to silver retained in the slag during the fusion or scorification of the ore, and to silver volatilized from, and absorbed by the cupel during the process of cupellation.The literature describing the results of experimental work on silver losses due to the above causes is extensive, and the general conclusion of these experiments is that the silver lost in the slag is small, but that lost by cupellation is larger and more variable.The term cupellation loss in this paper refers to the total cupellation loss, no distinction being made between the absorption and volatilization losses.Volatilization loss is shown by King to be 0.5% of the total cupellation loss and, as it is generally accepted among assayers as being only a small fraction of the cupellation loss (3) (5), it will not receive further consideration in this paper.The factors causing the loss of silver by cupellation and the precautions to be obs~rved to reduce the loss in this operation are described in (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5). The brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley are ideal for open cut mining and this method has been used since the start of coal winning in 1894. Operations at the main Yall9urn open cut commenced in 1922, but after a few years the main excavators were replaced by German continuous excavators and subsequent developments of Yallourn and the newer Morwell open cut have been based on this type of plant. The reasons for preferring continuous to intermittent excavators in the Latrobe Valley are indicated in this paper.Under the pressure of post-war conditions, and from their long experience and ability, German engineers have recently made substantial improvements in their continuous excavators and these developments have been enhanced by some American innovations. These changes have extended the economic limits of open cut mining and also serve to emphasize the close inter-relation between the nature of coal and overburden deposits, excavator design and methods of operation.As an aid to descriRing recent excavator developments, this interdependence is demonstrated by means of diagrams which show typical methods of operations, together with examples of actual machines using these methods. The types of excavator dealt with are mainly those in use at, or destined for Yallourn or Morwell open cuts, together with additional types used in U.S.A. and Western Europe. For completeness, and also because they will continue in service at Yallourn and Morwell for some years, rail-mounted dredgers have been included in this paper even though in Europe they are now regarded as obsolescent.Explanations are given of how the intrinsic qualities of Latrobe Valley brown coal and overburden have sometimes prevented overseas plants from operating with the full efficiencies and/or in the methods visualized by the manufacturer, and references are made to the modifications and investigations being undertaken to overcome these problems.A compresensive bibliography is given. Dates shown on illustrations are not commissioning dates of the plant concerned, but the year when photographed.

Ridgeway Gold Mine is part of Cadia Valley Operations which is wholly owned and managed by Newcrest Mining Limited. Ridgeway is an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation mining approximately 5.6 Mt of gold-copper ore per annum. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grades, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These factors have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Drawpoint recovered grades are routinely reconciled back to design data to monitor and assess draw performance. Grade control at Ridgeway has been based upon sampling the ore from SLC drawpoint bunds using 15 kg grab samples combined to form 30 kg samples prior to assay. This large sample size was selected in an attempt to representatively sample the coarsely-sized broken ore, the samples collected having a nominal diameter of about 130 mm. The assay results for gold and copper from these samples are extremely variable and the usefulness of the results has been questioned by the mine, particularly given the onerous and OH&S hazardous activity of handling large sample masses. Granulometry testwork at Ridgeway confirmed the extent of the relationship of decreasing sample grade variability with particle size. Based on this relationship, drawpoint sampling tests were carried out using 9 kg samples sieved to -45 mm at the drawpoint site. The gold and copper results from the finer 9 kg samples were significantly less variable than those from the normal, coarser 30 kg samples. The variance reduction was similar to that predicted from broken ore sample theory for the selected sample mass and nominal particle size. This relationship therefore allowed Ridgeway to assess the sample mass and particle size required to achieve a particular precision. In addition to improving the precision, the reliability of assay results from smaller samples from the fine particle fraction for drawpoint control depends on the accuracy of the results. The assumption is that the grade of the finer ore is similar to that expected from the lot, or that if a bias exists, then the extent of this bias is acceptable and consistent enough to be accounted for in the grade control system. The distribution of grade with particle size and the reconciliation of drawpoint sample and mine results is currently under investigation.

Drill cores from Section 62, New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., were used to study the petrology of rocks associated with the zinc lode. The distribution of the rock types in relation to the lode structure was determined. The distribution of the gahnite-bearing rocks was shown to be only partly conformable with the structure.It was concluded that large scale metasomatism was not widespread, that the rocks associated with the lode (except, perhaps, the quartz-gahnite-garnet rocks) were formed by metamorphism of sediments, and that rocks and lode were contemporaneously metamorphosed.INTRODUCTIONThis investigation was undertaken in order to study the rock types associated with the zinc lode of the Broken Hill orebody, and their relationship to the structure of the ore horizons. The work was confined almost entirely to the laboratory, and is therefore limited in its scope. It is hoped, however, that the information gained may throw some new light on the genesis of the lode.Certain inferences which are drawn from this work are at variance with the ideas of a number of earlier workers.In particular, the idea of large scale metasomatism developing many of the rocks associated with the lode, especially those containing manganese, is questioned. Risk Management has been applied relatively slowly in the mining industry. Except for the risk concept application in financial considerations, the application of Risk Management in safety management has been far from satisfactory. When applied it was treated in a global occupational safety and health sense. Regardless of how much the mining industry has progressed over the years it is still, in many respects, `state-of-the-art' business. The safety aspects of mining are well known and yet little understood by the public. Regardless of what has been achieved so far and how much effort has been put into it, mining is regarded as an unsafe and somehow rude business. Safety records of the mining industry vary from State-to-State. Latest mining related disasters in PNG and Queensland and some other fatal accidents support this public perception. They purport a need for change in managing safety in the mining industry. The latest mining fatalities have raised the issue: What must be done to improve safety standards? Duty of care, risk management and system engineering concepts can provide some answers. Risk Management principles which have been advocated for some time provide many answers and explanations and can make safety management more constructive and workable. What has been missing so far is that this concept has neither been applied nor has been modified for its practical application and purpose on a larger scale. A risk management approach to the management of safety and health in the mining industry is addressed, herein. This approach does not attempt to provide the solution. It does, however, provide a basic understanding of what Risk and Risk Management are all about. Rational management of risk is addressed in the life cycle and system contexts. A system of continuous improvement is applied. There is always a chain of events, outcome, exposure, consequence(s), and consequence(s) value(s). It means that development of an event takes place in time and space. Dynamic circumstances have been created in or within the system. It is a decision-making process designed to provide a methodology which is directed not toward a mathematical model but toward easy use and application in dynamic working environment, by decision-makers who can be anybody from either a risk taker or a risk creator. The emphasis is placed not only on arriving at the best practical, possible and fair decision but also on structured and systematic acquisition of knowledge about the system, its hazards and associated risks, hence increasing the decision maker's ability to manage the decision-making process related to the management of risk.

A career in the mining industry is both challenging and rewarding but comes with some unique complications. Few other industries have such a far reaching effect on individualsÆ lifestyles. Furthermore, few people working within the resource sector could say their job has had no effect on their lifestyle. Mineral deposits in Australia seem to exist predominantly in remote locations like Telfer, Mount Isa and Olympic Dam. With this comes a choice for young professionals; one that is not easy to make, with either alternative often having its pitfalls. This remote nature usually requires professionals (especially graduates and juniors) to choose between a fly-in, fly-out location or relocation to a remote town with less facilities (and some may argue attractions) than their coastal cousins. The challenge for young professionals is to pursue a career that will satisfy their professional goals while developing and maintaining away of life that is emotionally fulfilling.

Sampling is an integral part of gold bullion analysis. Gold mining industries sell millions of dollars worth of gold on the basis of analyses. Biased sampling can cause a serious loss in terms of monetary value to a mining company; hence accurate sampling is of great importance. The sampling procedures for gold bullion will be described. Emphasis is given to the most reliable method of obtaining a representative sample from a gold bar. The problems associated with sample preparation will also be discussed.The sampling procedure at the Kalgoorlie Metallurgical Laboratory will be evaluated in the light of comparative results from the Australian Gold Refineries (Perth, Kalgoorlie). The most common sampling practices adopted by different gold mining companies in the Goldfields and Australian Gold Refineries, Western Australia will also be presented.

This paper reviews factors involved in the feasibility stage of underground mine project development. Emphasis is placed on the need to first select the best method of extraction and make the most accurate assessment of the expected output even with the uncertainties which may exist in structural interpretation, ground stress, geotechnical factors, and industrial conditions. The subsequent engineering planning should be undertaken from the point of view of the face requirements and is subject to constraints imposed by the method of work and nature of the deposit and, in the case of access, to surface constraints and services.

Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. At present there exist few engineering calculations and principles to determine exclusion zones for personnel in the vicinity of underground explosive storage areas. This paper is written to encourage discussion and proposes a method to determine the impact of a blast wave through scientific principles. Then, criteria to determine an ‘exclusion zone’ need to be identified.There has been much work on identifying the pressure rise and the energy of explosive detonations underground but little to develop standards in criteria that can be used to identify exclusion zones for useful design of underground infrastructure. The author presents the newest ways of calculating the pressure rise and energy (impulse) of detonations and puts forward some criteria to be used in the identification of personnel exclusion zones to spark peer review and discussion of these criteria towards developing standards for engineering design.Smith and Sapko (2005) used Sach’s scaling laws to develop a relationship for both pressure rise and impulse, which incorporated factors for intersections. Intersections will have a large bearing on the peak pressure and the energy of the blast wave and needs to be incorporated. Silvestrini, Genova and Leon Trujillo (2009) developed the scaling laws with an energy concentration factor to predict blast propagation in partially confined geometries and together the author has proposed equations for determining the peak side pressure and the impulse in a tunnel. Given the weight and type of the explosive, the average cross-section of the tunnel complex and the number and type of intersections encountered, the pressure and impulse can be calculated.The military has carried out many investigations as to the influence of blast pressure and impulse on the human body. Lung damage, ear damage and velocity knock down are three of the criteria standards that are presented as possible methods of determining exclusion zones around an underground explosives magazine. The author suggests that the velocity curves presented by Bowen, Fletcher and Richmond (1968) could be an acceptable method of determining an exclusion zone as it incorporates the side pressure and the energy of a blast wave to determine the ability of the wave to knock down personnel.CITATION:Lovitt, M B, 2014. Reconciliation involves the collection of tonnage, grade (quality) and contained metal (product) data from disparate and hopefully independent sources. Examples are exploration data, production sampling data from blastholes or drawpoints, and process plant data. These data may be compared by means of ratios (factors). The F1 factor usually relates short-term (ore control) model tonnages, grades and metal content to ore reserves depleted. The F2 factor usually relates received-at-mill tonnages, grades and metal content to delivered-to-mill = production tonnages, grade and metal content. The F3 factor is F1 × F2 and enables a comparison of a mineÆs ability to recover the tonnage, grade and metal content estimated in ore reserves. The F1 factor measures the accuracy of orebody knowledge in the ore reserves to the demarcation of ore and waste by ore control (short-term model). The F1 factor may be used to check and calibrate the selectivity of mineral resource models and/or planned dilution assumed in transfer from mineral resources to ore reserves. The F2 factor enables a check on unplanned dilution entering the ore stream between ore control and the mill. Using the factors it is possible to calculate a monetary value on improvements in the accuracy of orebody knowledge, selectivity and the effects of dilution and ore loss. Reconciliation should be an implicit part of the mining process, and reconciliation targets should be a key performance indicator for well-run mines.

Ventilation, air leakage, and various cutting, loading and support movement operations all have a role in dust distribution on longwall faces as shown by the results of a large number of dust measurements on different longwall operations in the Bulli seam on the South Coast. It is concluded that leakage of air on the face has demonstrable mfluence on the exposure of the shearer operator to dust level. It is possible to calculate dust generated by various elements of a rrurung operation on the face from a single point measurement. In the examination of dust deposition from the source of generation as a function of particle size, it is found that respirable dust can remain airborne over long distances without any significant drop in concentration, if unobstructed.

Most exploratory drilling in the N.S.W. coal fields has been conducted using convent- ional diamond drill rigs of modern design, us- ually truck or trailer mounted. Conventional diamond drill rigs have also been used exten- sively by the Queensland Department of Mines for coal exploration. However almost all of the exploratory drilling of surface mine coal prospects throughout Queensland has been conducted using rotary rigs typified by the Mayhew 1000 truck mounted unit. The rotary rig has proved capable of both rapid non-core drilling and core drilling with high core recoveries when modern core barrels have been used by experienced drillers. For deep or continuous core drilling, wire-line equipment is now in general use. Both wire-line and conventional coring is effected using stationary split inner tube barrels, for minimum core disturbance, maximum core recovery, ease and accuracy of logging and sub-sectional sampling. Diamond core bits are generally required in N.S.W., with water circu- lation. In Queensland, the generally softer coal measures strata can be successfully cored using tungsten carbide bits and air circulation is the preferred method where possible.

The quality of mine planning decisions ultimately depends on reliable estimates of the characteristics of the orebody. The quant- ifiable factors such as grades or thickness can be estimated from field data gathered from outcrops or exploratory drillholes. Since outcrop data is necessarily limited to the periphery of a deposit, extensive drilling generally is required. This paper outlines a method for selecting the number and location of additional exploratory boreholes using an iterative procedure based on a mathematical optimization concept called fixed point theory. The method is illustrated through its application to an exploratory drilling program for a coal mine where optimized locations gave a lower estimate of regional and block variances than a manual Choice.

Despite the recovery of approximately six million ounces of alluvial gold from the West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand during the last 140 years, a great deal of this having been obtained via sluice boxes and riffle tables, there has been little advance in riffle table technology during this period. In this paper contemporary riffle table design and current operational practices are examined. Studies of gold loss to undersize tailings are described. In addition recommendations derived from recent research carried out in North America are contrasted with gold saving strategies adopted by West Coast miners.
