The Cosmo Project falls within the Archaean to Palaeo-Proterozoic Pine Creek Orogen, one of the major mineral provinces of Australia.The Cosmo Deposit is interpreted to be a series of steep north-west-plunging gold mineralised vein, breccia and shear systems within the tight Howley Anticline and hosted within interbedded siltstones, mudstones, banded iron, phyllites, dolerite sills and greywacke.A folded environment poses a number of technical challenges, particularly for estimation.Handling of tightly folded and in some cases narrow domains might include subdomaining for orientation, omni-directional three-dimensional (3D) estimation within constrained domains or software-enabled unfolding/un-wrinkling procedures (transformation of the data and estimate space into a two-dimensional environment). Each technique has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.A further method (one applied at Cosmo) is where the estimation parameters (specifically search and variography orientation) are modified in a frequent or ‘dynamic’ sense to suit the orientation of the domain whilst maintaining 3D space. Control of the resource estimation orientation can be done in several ways, including the use of sectional panels of a specific size or, alternatively, orientation sector divisions. The sector approach provides some significant reductions in processing time over the panel technique and could be applied in a number of software packages.Three-dimensional ‘dynamic’ interpolation reconciles well with production data from Cosmo, whilst the sector method provides a practical technique that can be executed without the complications of transformation or the need for labour-intensive orientation subdomaining and with acceptable resource estimation run time.CITATION:Finch, A and Pridmore, C, 2014. Coal Mining in India had been confined in the past primarily to two or three coalfields. Unscientific mining has led to huge degradation of land including massive subsidence of strata and disturbances of water tables to a wide extent. This has caused problems not only in flooding of mines from surface water but also in further planning of the surface drainage for current mining activities. Now, therefore, surface hydrology and land-use potentialities of the area have been endangered inflicting severe damage to the overall environment and ecology of the area. The paper Discusses certain investigative aspects of the problems highlighted as above in one of the coalfields, and encompasses mainly the following areas : 1) Quantitative estimation of the damage already done to the natural surface drainage system. For this purpose damage to topography and drainage for the last fifty years have been made out through the aerial photographs and topographic map sheets 2) Analysis and comparison of different states of such photographs are carried through to indicate the extent of damage to the hydrological conditions inducing undesirable changes in its land-use pattern. Based on the analysis, concrete suggestions are made to restore the water drainage system which will be most suitable for future mining in the area containing high grade coal. The design and planning of the drainage system is based on the total system approach including the cost benefit analysis as well as hydrological considerations.

The area around Big Bell was actively explored and sporadically mined for gold from 1904 onwards. The lease was named Big Bell in 1913. The property became established as a major mining centre with the development of the Big Bell underground mine in 1936. Mining operations commenced in late 1937 and ceased in January 1955, after milling 5.56 million tonnes of ore and producing nearly 21 tonnes of gold. In 1969 Australian Consolidated Minerals Ltd (A.C.M.) acquired the deposit then explored it alone and in joint venture until the current joint venture agreement with a subsidiary of Placer Pacific Limited (PPL) was negotiated in 1984. Following exploration and evaluation of near surface mineralisation, and a reassessment of the remnant pillars underground, the concept of a large open pit in conjunction with an underground mine evolved. The feasibility study was completed in October 1987, and the decision to go ahead was formally announced on 2nd December 1987. Placer Dome Technical Services Ltd were contracted to be the Project Managers, commencing construction on site early in January 1988 and handing the plant over to the operators 13 months later. The capital cost of the project at handover was estimated to be $133 million. The operating team commenced pre-production stripping of the open pit on 1st May 1988. By 31st January 1989 almost 16.0 million tonnes had been stripped and 350,000 tonnes of ore stockpiled.

The problems of using comparatively simple x-ray diffraction equipment for quantitative analysis are examined. Internal standard and direct calibration procedures based upon the measurement of integrated diffraction energy (diffractometer peak area) have been developed for the determination of quartz in Broken Hill dusts. By these methods an accuracy of ± 10 per cent of the true value can be obtained and this can be improved to ±2 1/2 per cent by statistical methods if necessary.Rapid analysis for the components quartz, muscovite, rhodonite, galena, fluorite, sphalerite, calcite, and garnet has been developed by adaptation of direct calibration procedures and use of maximum diffraction energies (diffractometer peak height). Until more is know!) about the pathological effects of multi-component dusts of the Broken Hill type it seems undesirable to fix theIr allowable concentrations in terms of the quartz content.

The Mons Cupri Cu-Pb-Zn deposit is situated within a complex Archaean volcanic sequence dominated by rhyolitic fragmental rocks. This sequence is underlain by a 150 m group of rhyolitic ash flow tuffs with minor conglomerate and sandstone, and is overlain by approximately 180 m of dacite and andesite flows. The Mons Cupri sequence itself consists of several elongate or circular rhyolite domes, flanked by rhyolitic fragmental rocks ranging up to 400 m in thickness away from the domes. The lithology of clasts (typically 1 cm to 1.5 m in size) provides strong evidence that the flanking fragmental unit was derived by explosive eruptions associated with the rhyolite domes. An approximately 15 m thick shale horizon, bleached and silicified at its base, overlies both the rhyolite domes and the frag- mental unit. A south-dipping chloritic pipe-like body, with near-surface dimensions of 1,000 by 250 m and narrowing at depth to produce a cone-shaped cross section, lies within the rhyolitic frag- mental rocks about 250 m north of the largest rhyolite'dome in the Mons Cupri vicinity. Its east west elongation parallels that of the rhyolite dome. Ghost fragments indicate that the material in this fissure is a severely chloritized derivative of the rhyolitic frag- mental unit. If continuous mining systems are to be successfully applied in metalliferous mines then reliable models will be needed to predict rock cutting machine advance and tool wear rates for effective machine selection before mining commences. Many of the predictive models developed to assess cuttability in situ are over-simplistic. As a result they tend to be both site and/or machine specific. Nevertheless very detailed models have been developed for full face machines which are capable of accurate cuttability predictions in a variety of rock mass conditions and for a variety of machine and tool configurations. However, models to predict productivity and tool consumption for partial face machines are not as well advanced. There is a need to develop reliable models for partial face machines such as Roadheaders, the Robbins Mobile Miner and the HDRK-Wirth CMM, as these types of machine are likely to predominate in a mining environment. The paper outlines the current state-of-the-art for predicting cutting machine performance and the work being carried out within the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE), in collaboration with the Australian mining industry, to advance our capability in this area.

In Finland fogging in mine ramps is a common problem. Fog forms when warm and humid exhaust air moves upwards the ramp, where the skin temperature of surrounding wallrock decreases to about 10¦C. Changes in fog thickness and lengths of fog-filled parts of the ramp depend at least on climatic conditions outside, diesel equipment usage in the mine, and the length of working sequence at a time. In this study fogging problems in three different mines, namely Orivesi mine, Louhi mine and PyhSsalmi mine, with different ore types, different layouts, and different depths are presented and compared. All these mines use diesel equipment and the ramp is used as an exhaust air route. In two of these mines the ramp is used as a haulage road and in the other for supply and repairing, checking, and surveying purposes. Measurements of humidity, temperature, air velocity, and dust content were performed in these mines. The measurement results, as well as field observations are presented, compared, and discussed. The results show that fog is observed in areas with high relative humidity values when air temperature and dew point temperature are less than 3¦C apart from each other. Air velocity values were high in many areas. In addition, measured particle concentration values were mainly high in areas, where fog was observed. A short literature review of recent fog formation studies is also presented. It demonstrates the complicacy of the fog formation process. Similarities and differences concerning fog problems in the ramps are found and presented. As already a lot of new information is gained, the continuation of research is considered plausible to find more economical ways of solving and preventing this problem in the future.

The tube bundle system is an integral part of an underground coalmine’s gas monitoring system. The maintenance of these systems is vital to ensure the quality of the data produced. Integrity testing of the tube bundle lines is required monthly, as specified in Standards Australia AS/NZ 2290.3 (1990). The various forms of integrity testing are reviewed, including pressure testing and introduction of a known gas. This paper provides a recommended and standardised methodology for those techniques where none currently exists. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis is performed. The parameters considered for the SWOT analysis include resourcing required by the mines, time for the testing to be performed, and quality of the results produced. The suitability of such integrity testing protocols to be used in a mine emergency situation is also evaluated.CITATION:Forrester, L, 2017. Investigations were carried out of burden distribution using a full scale model of the furnace top. Various charging sequences were used and large differences were found between ore charged as sinter-pellets and as pellets-sinter. These were attributed to the differences in the angle of repose between the two materials. Permeability index was defined which was independent of the driving rate from which a furnace resistance index was obtained for use in weekly reports. Results are summarised as a single expression between blast rates and pressures and the values of Qbl and Qmax are continuously measured to aid the operators in controlling the wind rate in the safe AP region. Results also indicate a reserve in capacity of No. 7 BF.

Mount Read is 'situated in the county of Montagu, on 'the west coast of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland from. Remine in an easterly direction, 15 miles northerly from Mount. Lyell, and 30 miles south-east from Mount Bischoff, and is one of the mountains forming the west coast range; it rises to a height of 3890 ft. above sea level.About eleven years ago the first mineral section was taken up on Mount Read by a Hobart company, known as the Mount Reid Silver Mining Company, consisting of 25,000 shares its holding consisted of one section of 80 acres, held under mineral lease. Prospecting was carried on for some months under great disadvantages, as all supplies had to be carried up the mount from Dundas, a distance of nine miles, on men's backs, until a pack track for horses was made.The track rises 2500 ft. in the first five miles, and then falls 200 ft. from that point to the mines, which are at an altitude of 3000 ft. above sea level, and at a point about two miles westward from the summit of the mountain, approximately midway between Mounts Read and Dundas.

At the outset I want to thank you for inviting a representative of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa to address you on the subject of mining and its future at this, the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. It is indeed a pleasure and an honour to be here. As many of you will recall, four years ago I, as the then President of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, had the privilege of hosting and welcoming you to the 12th Congress, the third such congress hosted by South Africa. The late Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, President of the 1930 Congress - the first to be held in South Africa - in his opening address foresaw the mining industry as "the most potent factor in spreading the benefits of civilisation over the sub-continent." We have come a long way since those halcyon days but, as I noted four years ago, it still remains true that mines have been, and will continue to be, the missionaries of development in many, if not most, of the Third World countries. I have been asked to address you on the subject of "mining" and to let my imagination roam widely so that delegates can leave the congress with a broader vision than they brought on arrival. It is a tall order and in my attempt to fulfil it I ask you to cast your minds back 120 years to a sultry, rustic day when the first diamond was discovered in South Africa at the now famous town of Kimberley. At that time the South African economy, predominantly pastoral, was still at subsistence level. Almost overnight the ensuing diamond rush turned the then British- owned northern Cape Colony's semi-desert scene into a hive of mining activity, every prospector bent on making his instant fortune. It was very little different, I am sure, to the gold rushes that hit California in 18+8, Australia in 1851, New Zealand in the 1860s. and the Yukon in the 1890s.

The InLine Pressure Jig represents a breakthrough in digging technology Its design incorporates a unique combination of features previously utilised in conventional jig design. In particular, a moveable screen and circular bed are used to excellent effect. However, a major design innovation is the encapsulation of the circular bed within a vessel - allowing the equipment to operate under pressure. This innovation eliminates free water surface, improves the dynamics within the separation layer (crossflow) and provides significant cost savings in the handling of slurries. Recent research results have indicated its capacity to achieve high recoveries and upgrade ratios in the gravity separation of Minerals.

Australia is the world's leading producer and exporter of mineral sands. Despite increased production from some other countries in recent years, Australia maintained its No.1 position in 1988 among world producers of mineral sands concentrates. Production of the titanium minerals -- ruffle, ilmenite and leucoxene, as well as synthetic ruffle -- by the seven companies currently comprising the Australian industry increased in 1988 in response to continuing strong demand for feedstock by the pigment industry. Production of co-product zircon remained at the 1987 level, reflecting declining zircon grades. Exports of mineral sands concentrates increased in 1988; export earnings exceeded $300million. Prices for mineral sands concentrates are now at a historical high and, assuming that the world economy remains strong, real prices should continue to trend upwards in the short term. Exploration in the Eneabba-Cooljarloo region and the Scott River area, both in WA, the Murray Basin, Vic, and the central Queensland coast area, has identified substantial resources of heavy mineral sands. These discoveries have reversed the trend of the early 1980s of falling resources of mineral sands. In 1988, BMR estimated that economic demonstrated resources (EDR) of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite combined was about 72.8 million tonnes. However, a substantial portion of the resources on the east coast are frozen as a result of environmental considerations. The proportion of mineral sands concentrates processed in Australia increased with the commissioning of two new synthetic rutile plants; Australia is now the world's leading producer of synthetic rutile (total capacity 272000 tonnes), most of it for export. Australia's two TiO2 pigment producers have both increased capacity, lifting national capacity by some 70p ercent to over 120000 tonnes/yr. As part of the expansion one producer converted from the sulphate to the chloride process. Other new pigment plants are being proposed for the future.

In August 2001 the Minister for Conservation declined an application by GRD Macraes for an access arrangement to enable work at the Globe Progress Mine near Reefton. In her decision, Ms Lee said:æI have considered whether potential compensation and the proposed safeguards against some of the adverse effects are sufficient to outweigh my concerns as to the loss of conservation values, consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held by the Crown and, to a lesser extent, the North Westland Regional Management Plan. I do not think they are sufficient. To my mind, my concerns as to the consistency with the objectives of the Conservation Act, the purposes for which the land is held and the loss of some conservation values in particular, outweigh any potential compensation and possible mitigation of adverse effects.Æ Commenting on the MinisterÆs decision Guy Salmon of the Ecological Foundation stated that the Minister should have invited the applicant to provide a 10 000 hectare pest-free wildlife sanctuary as part of the æpriceÆ for obtaining that access. However,æfor many people of green persuasion, it has become fashionable to say no every timeàthose who really have the well-being of the environment at heart, will want to look carefully at the bigger picture of environmental restoration needsàThe deciding criterion: the mining company should show that its involvement on conservation land would produce a net conservation gain. That is a criterion that creates the right incentives for win-win-win solutions on conservation land.ÆThis paper considers whether the concept of off site mitigation is one which fits within the current legal regime. Two questions arise:Can such mitigation/compensation be legally considered in access arrangements or required as a condition of resource consents? Is this a realistic option for industry to be pursuing?

Ausmelt Technology has a unique capability of removing the impurities, phosphorus and sulphur, from the feed materials to the process. Sulphur is removed to the gas phase almost completely because of the interactions of ore and coal in the reaction region at the top surface of the slag bath. Phosphorus is removed to the slag phase, with both basic and higher, controlled iron oxide levels in slag being achieved in the process. The significance of these features of the process relate to the production of pig iron with very low levels of these impurities for the further processing to steel, and to the treatment of high phosphorus and high sulphur raw materials. The marketability of pig iron and the raw materials are discussed in relation to this feature of Auslron.

The Per Geijer iron oxide apatite deposits (IOA) display significant potential mineral resources for Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (publ), known as LKAB. LKAB continuously mines magnetite/hematite ores in northern Sweden for almost 130 years. The Per Geijer deposits reveal a high phosphorus content and vary from magnetite-dominated to hematite-dominated ores, respectively. Furthermore, they show a large variation in texture, mineral composition, and relation to wall rocks. The high phosphorus concentration of these ores results from highly elevated content of apatite as gangue mineral. Reliable, robust, and qualitative characterisation of the mineralisation is required as these ores inherit complex mineralogical and textural features. For this purpose, comminution tests at laboratory scale in combination with scanning electron microscopy-mineral liberation analysis (SEMMLA) were carried out. Based on this work, significant information on the modal mineralogy and degree of liberation of minerals of economic interest (eg magnetite, hematite, and apatite) were obtained. Results show that there is a difference in the degree of liberation of magnetite and hematite between ore types. This seems to be dependent both on the size fractions and the dominance of each iron oxide in the individual ore type. The amount of gangue minerals seems to have no significant impact on the degree of liberation after comminution. Apatite is generally best liberated in ore types associated with silicates, regardless of magnetite or hematite dominance. Based on the results of this study it can be inferred that a high degree of liberation of the minerals of economic interest can be achieved. However, results need to be verified with further beneficiation steps such magnetic separation, apatite flotation and possibly reverse silicate flotation.

Magnetite deposits with distinctive ¦ actinolite ¦ apatite-bearing gangue and spatially-extensive sodic-calcic wall rock alteration occur in both Proterozoic metamorphic terrains and Mesozoic-Tertiary magmatic arcs. Examples from both settings constitute significant sources of iron ore (egKiruna, Sweden; El Romeral, Chile) and some host major Cu-Au deposits that have a local association with K-silicate alteration (eg Cloncurry district, NW Queensland; Copiapo district, Chile). A growing body of evidence points to a hydrothermal origin for these systems involving high temperature, low S oxidised fluids. The Cloncurry magnetite-Cu-Au deposits are products of the local structurally channelised influx of a specialised high salinity ore fluid into larger-scale alteration systems developed during pluton emplacement at greater depths than those associated with subvolcanic (porphyry) Cu-Au deposits. The geological characteristics of deposits in magmatic arcs are consistent with a similar mode of origin albeit in rather different tectonic settings.

The spatial distribution of ore with similar processing properties or domains within an orebody may be identified early in the assessment of an orebody to provide a sound basis for later development of the orebody. The assignment of domains in the primary sulfide portion of an orebody is often more difficult than recognition of the oxidised, supergene and related domains usually located towards the top of the mineralised volume. This paper will discuss some approaches to assigning domains within the primary sulfide portion of an orebody. The processing properties of each mining block will be known if the contained domain(s) and their proportions are known. The use of both physical and chemical ore properties to assign the domains is discussed. The domains based on similar processing properties do not necessarily coincide with geological zones assigned by geoscientists. As part of assessing the physical properties of ore, the modal analysis of the ore with respect to the valuable sulfide minerals and the sulfide and non sulfide gangue minerals has to be known, along with the traditionally used elemental assays for valuable and penalty elements. Two scales for determining other physical ore properties will be considered: the mesoscopic scale (examined by human eye) and the microscopic scale (examined via a microscope under high magnification). The strengths and weaknesses of the data obtained at the two scales are discussed in the paper. Broadly, data collected at the mesoscopic scale are much less expensive but the types of data available are more limited. Methods for evaluation of chemical ore properties are also discussed. After establishing a basis for establishing the spatial distribution of domains, variability testing is required to verify the integrity of the designated domains. In contrast, each block of ore in some orebodies has been assessed principally via the results of a laboratory separation on a number of drill core samples or composites from throughout the block, with minimal or no attention to the concept of domains.

In this year marking the centennial of the Geological survey of Western Australia, it is appropriate that we should review the value of the contribution of the Survey, and Australian Geological Surveys in general, to the exploration industry. Most geological surveys in Europe and North America had their origins in the first half of the 19th Century when the burgeoning Industrial Revolution was demanding the identification of new sources of coal and iron ore. Australia, as a young nation, essentially dependent on an agricultural and pastoral industry, and with already discovered vast coal resources in Eastern Australia, had, no great need to explore for new mineral resources. However, with the discovery of gold in 1851, the mineral potential of the country became apparent to the whole world and the first Geological Survey in Australia was set up in 1852 in Victoria under A.R.C. Selwyn. After a number of false starts all Australian States had an established Geological Survey by 1900. It is hard to assess the contemporary value of the early work of the Geological Surveys with respect to exploration, almost all major mineral discoveries were made by prospectors and most mining companies had little time for geologists - although the Chamber of Mines in Western Australia in 1910, did recommend that the Geological survey be granted an additional ten thousand pounds over two years to map all existing goldfields and the country between them, and produce a reconnaissance map of the area east of a line between Wiluna and Edjudina as far as the South Australian border!
