During the extensive research which has been conducted in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne, into the properties of lead and its dilute alloys, the Brinell test has been used for the determination of hardness.The work described herein represents part of an investigation into the influence of various factors on such determinations, particularly when carried out on different qualities of "pure" lead. It is intended to publish the more theoretical and controversial aspects of this research elsewhere.MATERIALS USED AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR TESTINGThe tests to be reported have been conducted on a specially pure electrolytic lead, and several brands of commercially "pure" lead. The analyses of the samples upon which most of the work has been carried out are given in Table 1.Note: Oxygen was not determined, but from the work of H. W. Worner, in the Rosenhain Memorial Laboratory, it appears probable that it was approximately 0-0003% in all samples.

The famous Golden Mile of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was, between 1888 and 19ft, one of the richest and most important gold camps in the world. Annual production, which reached a peak of nearly 1,300,000 oz. in 1903, however dropped to below 400,000 oz. after 1920.Depression seized the camp, and many mines closed down. The output from this old field is now steadily mounting under the stimulus. of a higher price for gold. In 1935 300,000 oz. of precious metal were recovered and the future is bright. Total production from the field is 21,400,000 oz., whereas something like £23,600,000 have been paid in dividends.The Golden Mile has been studied by many geologists. Their somewhat diverse findings were published for the most part in the Australian technical press which, unfortunately, is not sufficiently represented in foreign libraries.The following article is based on an eighteen months' study in the district for Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd., preceded by four years' experience with almost identical rock types in the, Porcupine district of Ontario. The extent of regional stratigraphic and structural geological mapping so far carried out in Australia is likely to be greatly overestimated by uncritical inspection of the latest authoritative geological map of the continent-that so ably compiled by the late Sir'T. W. Edgeworth David. Vast areas geologically coloured on this map are in fact known only from the most meagre field data, some of Which even include observations of distant views from which the so-called "geology" has been indicated in' reconnaissance reports.This applies to large areas in Cape York Peninsula; the plateau of Arnhem Land, and its margins except on the west where the Pine Creek mineral belt is better known; to the Desert Basin of Western Australia, practically the whole of the western half of the Northern Territory, much of east-central Western Australia, and northwestern New South Wales. Other vast areas are, more happily perhaps, left blank. It is true that prospecting parties have, at various times and with varying degrees of thoroughness, traversedparts of these little-known regions, often, however, in the search for gold or the.more obvious types of metalliferous mineral deposits and, furthermore, too often without leaving any written account of their examination, or with very sketchy details supplied. Unpublished geological surveys also cover some parts of these regions, but, on the whole, the picture we can draw of the regional deployment of rock masses in Australia is far less full than even David's map, with its obvious blanks, presents to us.Lest the practical mineral seeker among us should be inclined to place too much reliance on the prospecting to which I have referred.as giving him a straight hint of what country to keep out of, we may point to the recent discovery of a major sedimentary basin in the east KimberllilYs on which Dr. Teichert will have more to say. And that there are new metalliferous mineral deposits to be foundin parts of these little-known areas no one can doubt, for, after all, new discoveries are made from time to time in areas so well-known as the Victorian gold-fields. I take it then that regional geological mapping is a necessary concomitant of the further development of Australia's mineral resources-but I am not of the school that places it first on the list of priorities, and furthermore I believe that there can be a royal road to regional mapping-an inspired approach based on knowledge already gained and led to fruition by field surveys in key areas, by which there may be obtained a result giving a significantly close approach to actuality with only a fraction of the work that would be required for detailed field surveys on a systematic basis. I believe that a policy of rapid reconnaissance of such a type should be adhered to, especially in view of present deficiencies in numbers of geologists available for all purposes in Australia. The details that must eventually be sought can, I believe, be filled in later as the whole country becomes more developed and amenable to detailed surveys.

After extensive testing and a period of plant trials to establish the benefits of Caro's acid (H2S05) as an alternative oxidant, Queensland Mines Limited (QML) decided to replace pyrolusite with Caro's acid in its acid leach uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek. The decision was based on the reagent savings and environmental gains associated with the removal of manganese from the process liquors, as well as the labour savings and improved oxidation reduction potential control possible in leaching using the Caro's acid system. The permanent Caro's acid generating plant was designed by Interox Chemicals Pty Ltd of Australia (IC) to suit QML's require- ments and differed from the unit used during the plant trials. Commissioning of the plant was completed in April 1983 and it has been continuously used since that date.

This paper reviews the proportion of energy attributable to comminution within the Australian gold and copper mining sector. The need for this is motivated by inconsistencies in the quoted energy usage data and the lack of a common basis for reporting the fraction of energy in mining that is attributable to comminution. This study should form a reliable basis from which to assess both demand and opportunities to reduce energy consumption.The proportion of milling energy was calculated for the major producers in the Australian gold and copper sector. A sampling methodology created by Powell et al (2003 - 2010) was initially used to provide an accurate and meaningful measure of the energy used in the comminution process. However, no useful method for grouping similar mines was found. Fortunately, a surprisingly large amount of high quality data was found from a number of different sources, allowing the development of robust relationships to be used to estimate a high proportion of the unknown values. The fraction of energy attributable to comminution was found to be dependent on how the total energy consumption was defined. For instance, comminution accounted for 52 per cent of the electrical energy, but only 21 per cent of the total energy publicly reported by the mines because a substantial proportion of energy used on a mine is in the form of transportation fuel (mostly diesel). Critically, the measured electrical energy consumption does not account for transmission and generation losses, while diesel energy usage is typically quoted according to its calorific value. This review proposes that diesel should instead be converted via the mechanical efficiency factor for diesel engines. Using this conversion, comminution was found to account for 36 per cent of the available energy on average. This approach allows a useful basis of comparison for mines regardless of whether milling energy is obtained from electrical or diesel generation. A summary of the results are shown in Figure 7 with other values obtained from literature. The total comminution energy assessed in this study accounts for 1.3 per cent of AustraliaÆs electricity consumption, this figure will increase as the other mineral commodities are added to the study.CITATION:Ballantyne, G R, Powell, M S and Tiang, M, 2012. In the context of sustainable development, the Minerals Council of Australia (2010) states that 'investments in minerals projects should be financially profitable, technically appropriate, environmentally sound and socially responsible'. In other words, the business of mining can only be sustained if these criteria are met.   Science and technology plays a major role in all four of these criteria. This paper will present the technology and innovation emerging from the Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship which brings together CSIRO and more than ten of Australia's leading universities to work with industry to drive efficiency, productivity and environmental performance. This work is required if the Australian minerals sector is to thrive and continue to deliver national benefit in the face of increased global competition, declining ore grades, depleting ore deposits, increasingly constrained national resources (land, energy, water and people) and changing societal expectations.   Science and technology to reduce emissions and water use, discover greenfields resources, enable deeper mining operations and transform mineral processing are described. Technology is presented as an enabler of sustainability: a means to this end but not as an end in its own right.

Recent significant advances in the Global Positioning System (GPS) have contributed to making real-time kinematic/dynamic process for decimetre to centimetre-level positioning more reliable and ready for the production-use. As a result of research and development efforts in this area, a robust real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS positioning prototype system has been established at QUT for both scientific and engineering purposes. This system is finding applications in a wide range of automobile robots or automatic guidance vehicle systems. This paper first summarises the theoretical basis necessary for centimetre real-time kinematic positioning, then gives a brief description for the real-time dynamic GPS system developed at QUT. The paper summarises the results of a designed vehicle tracking test. The results demonstrated that the differences between RTK filtering solutions and OTF solutions are in the order of magnitude of about 20 centimetres and the accuracy of OTF solutions are in the levels of two centimetres. This confirms that the RTK system delivers three-dimensional position with decimetre-to-centimetre accuracy. This particular RTK processing system is robust and reliable, although the system is referred to as a prototype and will be further developed.

Several major routes connecting Northern and Southern Europe or Asia run through Austria. These highways have to surmount the alpine range which traverses Austria from west to east. In order to ensure safe driving conditions even in winter, tunnels, at times quite long ones, are necessary. Austria now has tunnels totalling 160 km in length. These tunnels are either already in use or just about completed. The Plabutsch tunnel near Graz will be one of the longest tunnels in the world: approximately 10 kilometers in length. It will be put into operation in the summer of 1987. Before construction could begin, soil and rock conditions had to be investigated by means of a test tunnel. Afterwards, excavation was begun to the full 100 m' cross section. The new Austrian tunnelling method with conventional blasting was used for the major part of the tunnel. It was necessary to have such a large tunnel cross section because a fully transverse ventilation system is installed for environmental reasons. In order to avoid air pollution from the tunnel, exhaust fumes are not allowed to escape from the tunnel portals but from two shafts, each with a diameter of 8.5 m. In this way, exhaust fumes must rise 90 meters or 240 meters before they reach the open air and will thus not affect the city. The ventilation system influences the size of the excavation, and especially the size of the ventilation caverns and the air shafts. All these factors directly influence construction and maintenance costs, and an economical optimisation leads to the appropriate dimensions for the excavation.

In this paper a laboratory investigation into the effect of confining stress, water content and gas desorption on coal permeability is presented. Of major significance is the effect of coal permeability on outburst occurrence and methane production, which is influenced by changes in stress. Test results indicated that the shrinkage of the coal matrix associated with desorption is greater than the coal matrix compressibility which will cause a reduction in the effective stress, hence increasing coal permeability.

During the meeting of the Institute last year at Port Pirie, the opportunity was taken to sample the lead bullion coming from the blast furnace and various stages during the refining process. Also, in the desilverising section, the upper zinc rich phase was sampled as the silver content built up and in the cupellation operation a series of samples was taken as the silver content of the bullion increased. In these two cases, the samples were taken under the supervision of a member of the staff of the Broken Hill AssociatedSmelters.In the following account of the microstructure of the samples taken, only the main phases present have received attention. In this connection deduction from phase diagrams of binary alloys has been used in conjunction with the assays carried out on duplicate samples taken at the same time as those for micro examination.

The underlying message of this paper is that investment in prospecting, exploration and mining in New Zealand is welcomed. The Government's policy with respect to Crown owned minerals is for continuing investment in prospecting, exploration and mining which is in accordance with good exploration or mining practice. To encourage continued investment requires a business-friendly environment. Government policies and initiatives to enhance the business environment for the minerals and coal exploration and mining industries are discussed in this paper. As well, new initiatives under consideration, which have the purpose of enhancing the investment environment, are discussed.

Intorducing the hypothesis that the cause ,òi spontaneous combustion of coal is depending un the accumulation of heat produced by its oxidation, the authors derived the equation expressing the temperature change in a heap i fine coal. To solve the equation, thermal conductivity, specific heat and rate of heat ,eneration of fine coal (-48 mesh) were measured at various temperatures in the range _'0-65¦C. The equation was solved numerically and the volume of fine coal which would ignite spontaneously was estimated as the function of ambient temperature. Using 170 Kg of fine coal, everal experiments for confirmation were conducted. At the ambient temperatures of 60¦C nd 50¦C, coal began to fire spontaneously brut 00 and 110 hours later respectively. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor is a device, which utilises a high intensity cyanidation process to achieve very high, usually near total, recovery of gold from gravity concentrates. The process utilises a fluidised bed and a chemical oxidant to enhance the gold dissolution kinetics to the point where the bulk of the dissolution occurs in a few hours. For convenience and security, most plants operate a 24-hour turn around. The product from the process is in the form of cathode gold ready for smelting by traditional means. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor performs a two-fold role. Firstly it increases gravity gold production, leading to a decreased CIP feed grade. Secondly, it removes slow leaching components from the plant leaching circuit. This two fold benefit leads to the following efficiencies: enhancement of the dissolution kinetics; enhancement of the adsorption kinetics; reduction of the gold load reporting to the carbon; a significant reduction of the ægold in circuitÆ lockup; and removal of slow leaching entities which can also result in a lowering of the required cyanide concentrations in the leaching circuit and a subsequent reduction in overall cyanide consumption. The above benefits are discussed in this paper, with a particular focus on the ConSep ACACIA ReactorÆs role in removing slow leaching components, with data generated over a 21-month period. Improvement in overall plant recovery via removal of slow leaching gold species is achieved in two ways. Firstly, some of the slow leaching entities, successfully leached under intensive cyanidation, are not always fully leached under plant conditions. This results in a lowering of the solid tailing. Secondly, the faster leaching kinetics achieved in the plant as a result of the removal of slow leaching entities results in faster and more complete adsorption of the dissolved gold onto activated carbon. This results in a lowering of the solution tailings. The construction and operation of the ConSep ACACIA Reactor is simple. Apart from the reactor body, which is a proprietary design, all components of the system are æoff the shelfÆ or specific to the siteÆs requirements. In operation of the fully automated version, a PLC controls a series of valves and pumps but except for a daily changeover process the only operating component for the bulk of the time is a relatively small solution pump. The process can be totally automated giving the security of a æhands freeÆ concentrate handling process up to the point where the product is presented as cathode gold. The ConSep ACACIA Reactor was developed by Anglogold Australia (formerly Acacia Resources) for Union ReefÆs Gold Plant and has been in production since February 1999. It has proven to be a low cost, high recovery, mechanically reliable method for the processing of gold concentrates. Such has been the success of the plant, as of June 2003 there are eighteen full installations of the processing plant installed at mines owned and/or managed by Anglogold, Newmont, Placer Dome, Independence (formerly Lonrho), Sons of Gwalia and Harmony.

A GREAT deal of attention has lately been given to the discussion as to the education required for engineers, and especially for mining engineers. The Institute of Civil Engineers has had a committee's report on it which has come to some interesting and valuable conclusions.The Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had a few years back a very long discussion on the subject, and the subject appears to be one of perennial interest to similar societies. Two recent addresses by Prof. Kernot, as president of the Victorian Instituteof Civil Engineers, are among the most interesting and practical of the contributions to the discussion. Engineers seem to feel either that the coming generation has not the same capacity to benefit by the training that has made themselves what they are, or that such training has turned out in themselves inefficient men, and that they must consequently struggle to obtain a better one for their successors. For not only is there a desire to extend existing instruction to cover the advances of science, but there seems to be a general desire also to make a completely radical change in the methods.It is not necessary to observe that education does not mean the imparting and acquiring of information, but rather the cultivation of the faculties so that the best use can be made of them and of any information acquired. For instance, a man is not educated who has by heart his lectures and the contents of his text-books, but that man is who remembers little of the actual wording of his text-books, but is able to find anything required in them...

To carry out its responsibilities the SECV needs to manage the visual environment effectively. Every land oriented decision effects what we see and the value in pursuing visual excellence is supported by informed opinion, widespread community interest and evidence of cost- effectiveness.By knowing how we perceive the landscape and then changing or conserving it we can assist in fostering a positive mental image of a countyside which is welcomed by the local and regional community.It is useful to examine key design elements and the value we place on visual impressions in relation to three significant SECV rehabilitation projects, at Loy Yang, Newport and Morwell Open Cut.

In this, the centennial year of The Institute, it is appropriate that the history of the Institute in New Zealand be recorded. I am indebted to John Dew, compiler of the centenary publication æMining People A Century - Highlights of the First Hundred Years of The AusIMM 1893 - 1993Æ, for many of the early historical references in this paper. In July 1892 the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its annual conference in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, when it was suggested by the delegate from Broken Hill that the time had arrived for the establishment of an Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers. Resulting from this meeting at Ballarat, a Provisional Committee was formed at Broken Hill with the object of forming The Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers having the following objectives. To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, the welfare of those employed in those industries by means of meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers with the circulation by means of publications amongst its members and associates the information thus obtained.

Many mining operations are uncertain of what costs they should be achieving. The majority of cost estimates are based on historical costs that have added contingency factors. Historical costs are a valuable source of information but a more precise costing method is necessary. There are several alternative methods for predicting costs. A methodology which provides the best indication of the achievable costs is one using a standard inventory list and a bill of quantities. The model is termed a Basic Principles model and addresses basic design principles and engineering constraints.

Assessment of metal mobility, acid rock drainage production, and toxic effects from weathering of mineralised materials (ie mine-waste piles and outcropping alteration/ore zones) is key in evaluating and mitigating metal mining sites. Many metal- and acid-generating materials at these sites are sulfur minerals (sulfides to sulfates) with differing reactivities, weathering characteristics and metal contents. Our working hypothesis predicts that data on the types and quantities of sulfur minerals, coupled with comparison of their sulfur isotopic compositions to that of aqueous sulfate in the surrounding environment, can be used to evaluate primary pathways of weathering reactions at mining sites. We developed a sequential extraction scheme to separate the phases of sulfur in mineralised materials. Operationally defined phases, including monosulfides, disulfides, elemental sulfur, water-soluble sulfo-salts, acid-soluble sulfates, and resistant sulfate phases such as barite, are quantified gravimetrically and/or instrumentally. Several sets of experiments were designed to test the effectiveness of this extraction scheme. First, a variety of ore sulfides diluted in an inert matrix was analysed with the scheme. Results showed that molybdenite and arsenic-bearing sulfides do not behave as predicted from just their sulfur oxidation states, indicating that samples containing these minerals need special treatment for complete phase recovery. Second, a natural mine-waste composite standard was analysed by the scheme. The sum of the phases was equal to the total sulfur concentration analysed independently. Each phase had a similar, but distinct sulfur isotopic composition. The results were verified with a laboratory prepared æproxyÆ having the same mineralogical composition as the standard, but with each phase having a very different sulfur isotopic composition. The sulfur isotopic compositions of the recovered phases from the æproxyÆ showed that the scheme effectively separated the sulfur with only minor cross contamination of phases. The speciation and isotopic analyses were applied to both mine-waste piles and naturally occurring alteration zones at nine mine sites. A case study from one site comparing the sulfur isotopic composition of minerals in an alteration zone and dissolved sulfate in proximal streams is presented. This case study shows the application of our data to differentiating sources of sulfate in the surrounding environment.
