The Izok massive sulphide deposits are located in the Northwest Territories of the remote western Canadian Arctic. Together they represent one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. Metall Mining Corporation is presently engaged in a feasibility study on developing the Izok property as well as actively exploring for additional reserves. The Izok deposits are Archean-aged, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) bodies hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks. The hangingwall package includes additional felsic volcanoclastics, dacitic and basaltic flows, thin sulphide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sediments. The felsic volcanics are intruded by syn- to late-hydrothermal dacitic dykes and sills and post-hydrothermal gabbroic dykes and sills. Both intrusives are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to overlying flows. All lithologies are cut by much later irregular granitic pegmatite dykes and regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene homfels grade. The deposits occur within a large kilometre-scale soda-depleted alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hangingwall rocks to the deposits are characterised by zones of muscovite-biotite (with or without sillimanite), lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite (with or without anthophyllite), and locally intense silicificified and albitised zones. All lithologies have been affected by a later calcic metasomatic alteration. As currently defined, the Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag deposits comprise a cluster of four complexly-zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central, and newly discovered Inukshuk deposits. The first three deposits are amenable to open pit mining while development of the Inukshuk deposit will require underground methods. The combined mineral inventory of the Northwest, North, Central and Inukshuk deposits at present totals 15.6 million tonnes with a grade of 2.4 per cent Cu, 13.8 per cent Zn, 1.4 per cent Pb, and 74.6 g/t Ag.

There have been strong industrial observations that clay minerals have a deleterious effect on mineral flotation grade and recovery. However, rigorous explanation on the role of clay minerals in flotation and effective ways to reduce their negative effects are not available. In this study, the flotation behaviour of low quality and high quality coal samples were examined at the Xstrata Oaky Creek Coal plant, and laboratory in fresh and recycled water with high ionic strength. Anionic and non-ionic dispersants including lignosulfonates and triblock copolymers were also tested with an objective of improving coal flotation in recycled water. It was found that overly stable froth was produced in the flotation of both low quality and high quality coal samples in saline water. Speciation modelling indicated precipitation of hydrophilic components which may adversely affect the flotation. Despite the overly stable froth, saline water produced much higher combustible recovery than fresh water without significantly losing the product quality. Lignosulfonate dispersants displayed a potential to improve the flotation in fresh water, but not in saline water. Conventional processing of heavy mineral deposits containing radioactive rare earth minerals such as monazite and xenotime may cause industrial hygiene problems through atmospheric dust and contamination of product concentrates. An alternative procedure has been developed in which such minerals are removed from bulk heavy mineral concentrates by flotation with little loss of other economic minerals. With fine ores, recoveries of over 95 per cent have been achieved and with coarse ores over 80 per cent, in both cases at high grade. Several flotation regimes have proven effective. The potential for generation of radioactive dust or product contamination is subsequent processing is correspondingly reduced.

The term geochemistry - chcmbtry' of the earth - is almost limitless in its implied subject, but of recent years a major trend of research in this field has been towards economic application in the search for mineral deposits, and in particular for those of some ofthe less common elements for which a demand now exists.Geochemistry is in a state of slow transition from a purely descriptive subject to a fundamental science concerned with the relationships that exist between the distribution of the elements in the earth's crust and the physical characteristics of the atoms of those elements. The progress achieved promises a set of basic principles which will relate the atomic characteristics of an element to the physico-chemical conditions that make for its dispersion or concentration. This means that, given a geological map of an areasufficiently detailed for the physico-chemical conditions existing in past geological eras to be deduced, there is the possibility that the relative distribution throughout that area of any element present, and its likely mode of occurrence, could be predicted from a consideration of its atomic characteristics.Since the atomic characteristics of the elements are becoming increasingly well defined by physical research, the attainment of this ideal of prediction depends upon:(a) the strengthening of geochemical theory; and(b) the development of petrological and mineralogical methods of assessing the conditions of temperature and pressure prevailing in geological formations at various stages in their history.The other prime requirement is a d.etailed geological map - a requirement that is all too often lacking.The fact that there has been very little "geochemical approach" to problems of economic geology in Australia should not be taken to mean that there is little point in trying to develop such an approach here in as active and as rigidly scientific a manner as possible. The degree of success that has attended the attempts so far made, to which reference is made below, suggests the reverse, particularly in view of the relatively slight cost involved if the investigations were properly organised on a centralised basis. There are three aspects of geochemistry that are directly applicable to the search for economic minerals.(a) The classic technique of the prospector can be made more sensitive and reliable by the use of modern equipment coupled with the application of geochemical theory to geological and structural data. The case of the rare alkali elements (see below) is givenhere as an illustration of the way in which the distribution of elements can be predicted from the first principles of geochemistry, thereby replacing the prospector's dependence on his "sixth sense" that enabled him to suggest that a certain area of formation was"favourable" for the occurrence of a certain type of mineral deposit.At its best, this sixth sense amounted to an almost subconscious correlation of all relevant associations and typical occurrences of the particular mineral experienced by the prospector during his...

Changes in the configuration of late Cenozoic volcanic arcs related to Pacific-Australian plate convergence in northern New Zealand may have localised large-scale epithermal gold-silver mineralisation to a particular part of the volcanic arc system, the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The history of arc-type volcanism in northern New Zealand began with the development of the continental margin Northland Volcanic Arc from early-mid Miocene (26-15 Ma). From 18-15 Ma the Northland Volcanic Arc extended south into the northern and western part of the CVZ where it is dominantly composed of andesite with lesser dacite and very minor rhyodacite. In the south, centre and east of the CVZ, younger andesite-dacite volcanism overlapped in space and time (14-5 Ma) with voluminous rhyolitic volcanism associated with rift-hosted calderas and minor basaltic eruptions. This change to bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and extensional tectonics was a result of southwest (SW)-directed propagation of the Colville-Lau oceanic island+ arc into the north-northwest (NNW) trending Northland Volcanic Arc and its underlying continental crust. The extensional tectonic regime created in the collision zone between the two arcs is also the site of the 14-6 Ma Coromandel epithermal gold-silver province, which contains some 50 separate deposits and has a production (1862-1996) of about 300 t Au and 1150 t Ag. Extensional tectonics facilitated the emplacement of silicic magma at shallow crustal level and led to reactivation of deep basement faults. The resulting enhanced heat flow and fault-focused fluid flow localised large hydrothermal systems and associated extensive low-sulphidation epithermal gold-silver deposits in the southern part of the province, as at Waihi, Golden Cross and Karangahake.

At Yucca Mountain, USA, a tunnel is being built according to nuclear quality standards. It has proved possible to meet very high quality demands while at the same time achieving high advance rates. To be able to do this, routines on how to record and store quality related information have been established. This has meant that a new philosophy has entered the tunnelling industry. Especially for nuclear waste projects, of which Yucca Mountain is one of the first ones to be built, the experiences made and the quality assurance program established will be of great importance for future projects. The paper gives examples of what the Nuclear Quality Assurance system has meant in practice for the tunnelling at Yucca Mountain. And, it also explains why a non-grouted bolt, Super Swellex-, was chosen for long-term reinforcement in the tunnels which might host nuclear waste for thousands of years.

In support of the development of its Liberian iron ore project, ArcelorMittal Mining Research and Development (AM Mining R&D) has performed characterisation and beneficiation test work on drill core samples received from the proposed mine area. In addition to this, a sinter feed product was composed by blending and processing the drill cores in order to predict sintering performance of the ore. This article presents the methodology used to prepare the drill core blend for characterisation, as well as describe the sinter pot trial. Low-density explosives have been developed with trials being conducted for over 20 years and yet have still only gained limited market acceptance despite producing some very promising results. The biggest concern with industry acceptance has been disbelief that a product with lower density than the ANFO benchmark could fragment anything but the weakest of strata. Trials have been carried out with products such as diluted ANFO, low-density ammonium nitrate (AN) and various other mixes, although it has been only recently that low-density explosives have been accepted as a serious alternative to traditional products such as ANFO and heavy ANFO. The recent uptake of low-density products has been the result of several key factors: the current resources boom forcing AN supply issues, the development of new handling techniques, and a far better understanding of the utilisation of such products. This paper highlights the benefits of low-density products available in the market and focuses on the situations where low-density explosives can provide the end user with benefits that would otherwise be achieved through more time consuming methods. Through correct implementation, low-density explosives can provide the blast designer with another option when looking at the optimum method of breaking the rock. This while still controlling the other limiting factors such as cost, environmental impacts (noise, vibration, dust and fumes), coal damage and safety (stable walls).

An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. Leading Article from "British Medical Journal," London, 4th, November, 1944.Assuming that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid, Denny, Robson, and Irwin thought that if the solubility of siliceous material retained in the lungs could be suffciently reduced the usual fibrotic response could be diminished or prevented. They discovered that aluminum powder rendered siliceous material insoluble in vitro by coating the silica particle with a thin film of gelatinous hydrated alumina, which on drying formed crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate. The presence of this adsorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was shown by staining it with aurin. That metallic aluminum dust produced no fibrosis in the lungs was demonstrated by dust-inhalation experiments on eight rabbits. Attempts were therefore made to prevent silicosis by mixing quartz with metallic aluminum dust.Animals exposed to quartz dust developed typical silicosis in about five months, but the addition of 1 per cent. aluminum powder prevented this even after exposure had been lengthened up to 22 months, provided the aluminum powder was of a particle size below 5. This year Crombie, Blaisdell and MacPherson have reported the treatment of 34 silicotic miners by the daily inhalation of fine aluminum powder freshly ground from small aluminum pellets in a specially constructed mill. Daily treatment began with five-minute inhalations, which were gradually increased to 30 minutes. Some of the men received 300 treatments, but the majority only 200. Out of the 34 cases thus treated clinical improvement was manifested by lessening or disappearance of shortness of breath, of cough, of pain in the chest, and of fatigue. In 15 cases the condition became stationary and remained so in spite of continuous employment in silica dust throughout the treatment. The progress of the disease was assessed by means of tests for respiratory function repeated at three-monthly intervals. Obviously this treatment cannot be regarded as a cure for silicosis, since it cannot restore lung tissue which has undergone fibrotic change; but Crombie and his colleagues believe that the inhalation of finely particulate aluminum powder offers every prospect of preventing the development of human silicosis.In view of these findings, it is surprising that repeated papers by Goralewski from Germany describe various types of lung disease attributed to aluminum dust, and press for them to be scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act in that country. Seven hundred workers were investigated. They were making, probably by a stamping process, aluminium powder containing about four milliards of particles of dust per grain, and are reported as complaining of dry cough with pain on breathing, shortness of breath, poor appetite, and gnawing abdominal pain. Although bismuth mineralization is spread widely through the Lachlan Fold Belt in New South Wales, broad grouping of the various deposits can be effected on the basis of geographical and geological (age and type of associated rocks) affinities. As a result, significant concentrations of bismuth can be recognized in the Mid-Western granites, Cobar-type ore, the Yass Silurian acid volcanic belt, and the Albury, Bega, Braidwoodand Bathurst districts.In these deposits bismuth generally occurs in minor amounts associated with molybdenite, wolframite, scheelite, cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, magnetite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, and native gold. From this group of minerals three broadly defined associations can be recognized.I. Bi-Sn-W-Mo2. Bi-Au( -Te)3. Bi-Pb-Cu(-Au)There may be some interchangeability of these metals, as instanced by occasional Bi-Cu-W-Mo mirleralization, but pyrite and/ or arsenopyrite are usually prominent in all associations.The first two of these associations occur mainly in the form of narrow quartz veins rarely averaging more than O· 3 per cent Bi, although there is often a marked enrichment in ferruginous material in the oxidized zone.Most of these veins occur within or adjacent to granitic rocks of varying ages (principally Silurian or Devonian), although Bi-Au mineralization tends to be related to more basic igneous activity than the Bi-Sn-W-Mo association.The latter is also occasionally developed in pipes, usually coarse-grained and richer in bismuth (as at Whipstick, the principal mine in New South Wales with a production of 343 tonnes of the metal), or in lower grade, but probably larger tonnage skarn deposits. The bismuth-base metal association occurs mainly in Silurian acid volcanic sequences and may also form low grade but large tonnage deposits, such as is possibly developed at Cobar.

Conventional techniques for resource estimation generally involve the laborious analysis of variograms and the specification of parameters for covariance functions. In large deposits, construction of resource models and their update require significant amount of manual work, expert knowledge and time. In this paper we take a machine learning view to the problem of resource estimation. This is a non-parametric Bayesian method, leading to automatic parameter estimation (learning). Through Bayesian learning, the parameters of the model can be obtained by optimising a quantity known as the marginal likelihood. The main advantage of this approach over conventional maximum likelihood estimators is that the objective function incorporates the OccamÆs razor principle. This allows the comparison of different statistical models û for example, models designed with different covariance functions û and naturally penalises complexity, thus avoiding overfitting. Our technique presents significant flexibility for the definition of mean and covariance functions and permits the usage of more sophisticated models.The second contribution of this work is the formulation of a data fusion mechanism that continuously updates the resource model. As mining progresses, more information becomes available. For example, the hardness of the rocks can be measured while drilling blast holes, grades of ore and contaminants are obtained from cone logging. This information is in general available at a finer spatial resolution but can be more uncertain. The data fusion mechanism can seamlessly estimate the uncertainties of the different types of information and fuse them as new measurements are acquired. This procedure can significantly improve the quality of the resource model, defining new grounds for stochastic mine planning. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in estimating iron ore deposits by integrating information about different grades.

A methodology for assessment and remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) developed at the Sullivan Mine in the West Coast Region has been applied to the closed Blackball Mine, Blackball, West Coast Region. AMD from the Blackball Mine has low pH, high acidity, and elevated levels of iron, aluminium, manganese, nickel, zinc and arsenic. The AMD flows at a variable rate (36 - 101 L/s) into adjacent Ford Creek, causing an increase in acidity and trace element concentrations in the creek. To test the effectiveness of treatment with a simple limestone-based treatment system, a column leaching experiment was conducted over a nine day period. The results show effective removal of acidity, reduction in the concentrations of iron, aluminium, manganese and zinc, and production of alkalinity. To determine if this treatment method reduces the toxicity of the AMD to aquatic invertebrates, a 96 hour ecotoxicity experiment was conducted. The results show a significant decrease in mortality in the treated AMD compared to untreated. The column experiment, in conjunction with the ecotoxicity work, suggest that a passive treatment system consisting of a limestone leaching bed and an open limestone channel may be sufficient to treat the AMD from the Blackball Mine. Further work, such as large-scale treatment trials, is recommended.

Structural, mineralogical, and textural data from the Tarnagulla Goldfield demonstrate that the area has undergone three significant phases of deformation. The first phase of deformation (Dl) predates the intrusion of the Tarnagulla pluton, which has been dated using K/Ar as 391 ¦ 5MY. We regard this pre-granite deformational event as the major regional deformation. Gold-bearing quartz veins have been deposited in dilational sites on west-dipping reverse faults. These sites demonstrate a geometry related both to faulting associated with Dl and the plunge of the Fl fold axes. This evidence, together with chronology of unmineralised ? D2 and D3 faults, the absence of quartz veining associated with D3 events, and the deformation of carbonate-quartz-biotite-sulphide aggregates within Sl by later S2, lead us to conclude that the bulk of the mineralisation was essentially syn- or late Dl. S'80 values for fluids in equilibrium with vein quartz from Central Victoria have indicated equivocal support for either a magmatic or metamorphic origin. Our evidence supports a pre-magmatic origin for mineralisation at Tarnagulla and hence tends to favour a metamorphic fluid source.

The closure of the only professional mining school in New Zealand will mean that the minerals industry will have to explore other options to fill their mining professional positions. Globally mining is not seen as an attractive career option for young people and recruitment into mining courses is at a low level. Yet industry demands ever increasing competencies with respect to technology, environmental issues and legislation. This paper addresses this issue by first discussing the attributes required of graduate mining professionals. It then looks at alternative ways on how these can be met internationally and on the home front.

The history of mining is rightly proud of its achievements in improving productivity and cost improvements over the years. No matter what measure is used, tonnes per manhour, cost per tonne, etc vast improvements have been made over the last hundred years. In fact over the last ten years in Australian coal mines raw coal output per employee has increased by 60 per cent. When one examines why these improvements have taken place the principal reasons have been technological advancement in mining equipment, excavator and dump truck capacity increases, longwall and continuous miners continually improving in reliability and size. Of course all these improvements are correlated to an increase in capital cost. Even with the above-mentioned advances the pressure for increased performance is as strong as ever. The international mining and mineral-processing sector is currently operating in a recessive market with some traditional commodities, eg gold trading at 20 year lows. During recessive times senior management will demand greater returns on capital employed: the obvious choices being reducing costs or increasing throughput. In addition, head office environments will often place a capital freeze on operational management so the opportunity to take advantage of technological change is not available. The challenge is, therefore, to increase throughput and cut costs without the need for capital. The answer is to optimise the existing labour and plant. If done systematically a result in productivity improvement, in our experience, as high as 45 per cent can be achieved with the average across South East Asia and Australasia being 21 - 23 per cent. The intention of this paper is to present a systematic approach to labour and machine utilisation thereby gaining the greatest possible return on the existing capital base.

The 40 Moz Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea is the worldÆs largest, low-sulfidation, epithermal gold deposit, in terms of contained gold. The deposit has average grades of 2.42 g/t Au (LGL Resources Reserves Update, 2008) and gold is hosted primarily in refractory pyrite. Lihir Island is part of the 150 km long, Tabar-Lihir-Tanga-Feni, alkalic, volcanic island chain located in the New Ireland basin. Five volcanic blocks comprise Lihir; Plio-Pliestocene Huniho, Kinami and Luise volcanic edifices are built on top of remnant Pleistocene Wurtol Wedge and Londolovit Block (Wallace et al, 1983). The Ladolam gold deposit is located in the central portion of the dissected Luise volcanic edifice and is composed of four main orebodies: 1. Minifie, 2. Lienetz, 3. Coastal, and 4. Kapit. An active geothermal system is overprinted on the ore deposit, localised along north-trending lineaments, and is expressed as hot mud pools and fumaroles. The focus of open pit mapping and drill core logging, as part of ongoing PhD research, has been in the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies. The deposit geology is grouped into four main phases: 1. volcano-sedimentary host rocks, 2. porphyry-style biotite alteration and related hydrothermal breccias and veins, 3. epithermal-style breccias and veins, and 4. modern geothermal alteration. Gold is associated with epithermal-style alteration and mineralisation. Ongoing observations of the Minifie and Lienetz orebodies are highlighting differences in the geology and paragenetic histories. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Golden Cross Gold Mine is located at the head of the Waite kauri Ri ver, 8 km northwest of Waihi near the southern end of the Coromandel Range. The mine produces gold and silver from epithermal veins hosted by Miocene andesitic flows and pyroclastics of the Coromandel Group. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold NZ Ltd (80 per cent) and Viking Mining Company Ltd (20 per cent). Mining is by open pit and underground methods. Mineralisation in a near-surface sheeted/stockworked vein zone is mined from the open pit. The deeper Empire Vein System is mined from underground where higher grade mineralisation is restricted to generally discrete veins. The open pit stockwork zone is west of and offset from the updip trend of the Empire Vein System. The Empire (hangingwall) Vein strikes generally north-northeast and dips steeply west. Dips become subvertical at greater depth. The hangingwall vein is a well developed, generally continuous structure with relatively high gold grades. A complex footwall vein system forms shallow west-dipping offshoots to the hangingwall vein. Structure and gold grades become increasingly erratic away from the hangingwall vein. The better developed footwall veins carry economic grades and high 'spot' grades over 50 g/t Au are not uncommon. Highest gold grades are associated with tightly crustiform banded sections of quartz veins and with dark fine grained siliceous breccias. The main hangingwall vein occupies a major north-northeast trending fault structure, the Empire Fault. Footwall veining forms within subordinate splinter fault zones. There has been extensive multidirectional pre-, syn- and post-mineralisation faulting. Fault manifestation is highly dependent on host rock characteristics. The central part of the hangingwall vein and surrounding silicified country rock has been shattered by a major fault structure, the West Mine Fault, forming a poorly consolidated, blocky quartz-breccia ore zone. Away from the more brittle ore zones and associated silicified envelope, wide clay-filled shears mark the major fault trends. Development of the deposit is considered to have occurred in two distinct stages related to separate episodes of dilational jog movement on the Empire Fault. The first phase reactivated the pre-existing Empire Fault as a dilational fissure with subordinate splinters on the footwall side. The Empire Vein System (hangingwall and associated footwall veining) formed during this phase. A second phase of renewed movement with further dilation resulted in more extensive fracturing of the Empire Vein and surrounding country rock and formed the sheeted/stockwork veining of the open pit. An upwards/westward migration of the hydrothermal system is assumed but fluid pathways between underground and open pit veining are unclear. Ore extraction and mining geology methods have responded to improved understanding of the grade and structural variability, and changing ground conditions inherent in the vein system. The underground mine produces ore from flatback cut and fill, post-pillar and bench stopes. Open pit and underground ores are campaign milled through a conventional CIP plant.
