The moisture content of iron ore is important in handling, stockpiling, transport and further processing operations. Typically these ores contain both `free' and `bound' moisture, the latter being moisture that is not removed in a conventional laboratory determination of moisture by air drying at 105¦C, and it is the free moisture that is important in dust control and ore handling. The CSIRO Division of Mineral and Process Engineering has previously developed and commercialised gauges, based on capacitance and microwave techniques, for the on-belt determination of moisture in coal and minerals. However, these gauges determine total moisture, and have a different sensitivity to free and bound moisture in the material analysed. Consequently, the accuracy of determining total or free moisture alone may be significantly affected by variations in the bound moisture content. The Golden Blocks Goldfield is located in the Slaty Creek area,North West Nelson, about 20 km west of Collingwood. Alluvial gold was discovered in Slaty Creek in 1861. Gold was mined from quartz veins up to 1.5 m thick at nine mines from the 1890s until the closure of the Aorangi Mine in 1911. Total production from the Golden Blocks Goldfield is estimated at 46 000 ounces of gold. The Aorangi Mine was the largest mine, with a recorded production of 27 978 ounces of gold at an average grade of 36 g/t. Quartz veins containing gold and sparse sulphide mineralisation occur in a slightly metamorphosed, complexly deformed over-turned sequence of Lower Ordovician sandstones and shales. Primary gold mineralisation is associated with intensely deformed zones that occur near or at carbonaceous shale and sandstone contacts. Some eighty-five percent of all gold production (39 000 ounces) came from four mines confined to the stratigraphically lowest, most widespread shale unit. The quartz veins exhibit textures consistent with a hydraulic fracturing mode of vein formation with fissure infill vein types predominating over replacement textures. Stylolites of carbonaceous material and recrystallization features within the veins suggest multiple phases of deformation. The lack of wall rock alteration, and low primary fluid inclusion temperatures of 200¦ - 265¦ indicate that the ore fluids were associated with a low temperature epithermal system. A model consistent with similar mineralisation styles observed in Ordovician sediments from Pacific Rim occurrences is presented. The high grades (up to 100 g/t) mined from the upper levels of several mines suggests supergene enrichment processes associated with the Upper Cretaceous weathering surface. The Golden Blocks Goldfield has had no modern exploration. The most recent exploration was undertaken in the early 1980s. There are known acid intrusives in the area, with potential for the application of new models of intrusive-related gold mineralisation.

Extraction under very mild conditions - a few minutes at room temperature with poor solvents - yields results characteristic of surface properties for a variety of coals. Such superficial extractions preferentially remove long-chain aliphatic compounds. As coal becomes more oxidized, less of these yellow- colored compounds is extracted, forming the basis for a simple colorimetric test for coal surface quality. The fact that these aliphatic compounds are responsible for surface hydrophobicity is supported by good correlation between extraction results and floatability, which decreases with decreasing extractability. This extraction test is very sensitive to oxi dationb even the effect of heating for an hour at 100 C can be detected. A second extraction test using mild alkali conditions has shown good correlation with plant dewatering Operations.

Analyses of several nickel mattes from around the world show a significant variation in their copper content. Typically, matte contains an alloy, heazlewoodite and a copper sulphide phase. The various commercial methods of processing these mattes are reviewed and some of the fundamental factors which determine the choice of leaching system are discussed. Electrochemical studies on pure heazlewoodite and millerite in sulphate and chloride media are compared which show that nickel sulphides react via a series of nickel deficient sulphides and exhibit passivation as nickel is removed. Differences in the electrochemical behaviour of nickel sulphides in chloride media are attributed to greater crystallinity of sulphur and less formation of'NiS2. The electrochemistry of mattes differs because of the presence of alloy and copper. Copper in the matte modifies the potential for alloy dissolution and the rate of anodic dissolution of nickel. At elevated temperatures, Cu(II) in solution exchanges with NiS and completes the leaching of nickel at relatively low potentials without significant oxidation of sulphur to sulphate. It is concluded that there are fundamental advantages to leaching nickel matte in chloride media using Cu(II)/Clz as the oxidant.

The Ohaaki Rhyolite and the Rautiwiri Breccia are two volcanic units occurring in the shallow and deep parts of the Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system. Alteration of these units by chloride waters results in distinct mineral assemblages that also have distinct whole rock compositions. The Ohaaki rhyolite is altered to an assemblage dominated by quartz, adularia, illite and pyrite as a consequence of silica, potassium and sulfur metasomatism. Locally, these rocks contain up to 0.5 ppm Au. The Rautiwiri Breccia by contrast is altered to an assemblage dominated by albite, adularia, quartz, illite, chlorite and pyrite in association with modest sodium metasomatism. Whole rock oxygen isotope compositions of altered rocks range between 3.3 and 7.5 ë, and are generally lower compared to their fresh rock equivalents having values of 9.5 to 10.6 ë; the result is broad pattern of lower values with increasing alteration intensity.

Before proceeding to the main portion of the above subject, a few remarks as to the general question of our mill slimes seem called for, and, with this in view, it is intended to briefly refer to the salient, points connected with their production, treatment and disposal at the mills.It is well known that, owing to the inticate mixture of the constituents of our sulphide ore, 'a very great deal of crushing and grinding is required to detach the particles of galena from the zinc blende and gangue of the ore, and it will be readily understood that, in this operation, a considerable amount of the material is converted into a slime which consists of minute, but ,(as can be see~ under a glass) well definied particles of all the constituents· 6f the ore arid combinations thereof, the relative proportions of which depend on the dual characteristics of hardness and abundance of the different constituents. A calibration of the Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator relates the current in the electromagnet and the transverse slope of the chute to the specific susceptibility at which separation is being effected. In addition to providing a rapid measure of the specific susceptibility of minerals and composite grains, the calibration provides a guide to operation of the Frantz isodynamic separator for mineral separation, and to the nature of composite grains. The most sensitive magnetic separation is obtained by using the highest practicable current and transverse slope, and the lowest practicable longitudinal slope.INTRODUCTIONProbably all minerals have a magnetic susceptibility measurable by sensitive techniques. However, magnetic separation between minerals which have low but different specific susceptibilities, and which for many purposes are considered essentially non-magnetic, has only become practicable with the development of the Frantz isodynamic separator.The construction and principle of this highly sensitive separator has been described by S. G. Frantz as an appendix to a description by 'Gaudin and Spedden (1943) of its application to the separation of sulphides constituting mill products.Various publications (e.g. Hess, 1949, Hutton, 1952) refer to its use in separating the mineral constituents of rocks, ores, and unconsolidated sands.As used in this study the Frantz isodynamic separator consists of a vibrating chute mounted centrally between the pole pieces of an electromagnet (Fig. 1). This unit may be inclined in any direction by the universal mounting, and the electromagnet current is continuously adjustable from 0 to 1·5 amperes.

THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. Dense medium drum separator efficiency was analysed at two Western Australian iron ore concentrators. Efficiency data had hitherto been difficult to accumulate due to the high cost of analysing representative, and therefore large, coarse ore samples. To overcome this problem, recoverable density tracers, which are in effect artificial mineral and gangue, were manufactured in three different sizes (15 mm, 30 mm and 60 mm). Their use enabled partition curves to be studied within one hour of conducting a test: separation densities were generally lower than the feed medium density for all three sizes of density tracer. For a given set of operating conditions, the smaller tracers had lower separation densities and larger ecart probab/es than the large tracers. These phenomena are explained with the aid of a conceptual model of a drum separator, which assumes that the feed ore plunges to the bottom of the drum upon introduction. Particle rising velocities are, therefore, process determining.Medium rheology was altered by adjusting the proportion of solids in the pulp. This was accomplished by changing both the pulp density and ferrosilicon/magnetite ratio. Higher solids volume fractions invariably caused a decrease in separation densities and an increase in ecart probables, most markedly for the smaller tracers. A similar response was observed when feed tonnages were raised.An explanation for these phenomena is sought in the discussion which also suggests means of improving drum separator efficiency.

DURING the four years, 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925, China produced the following quantities of non-ferrous metals and ores: Antimony Products - 67,869 (long) tons. The production for 1925 was 20,869 tons, of which 80% was regulus, 14% crude,and 6% oxide.Arsenic (White) - 4200 tons. The production for 1925 was 1200 tons, but only 90 tons were exported, some 25% of which to Hong-Kong, France, and U.S.A. each, and the rest in small lots to other countries. Domestic consumption was 1110 tons, and thelocal price for "cake" was around £47 per ton on 1925 exchange.Arsenic Ore (Realgar) - 1400 tons.Lead Ore (Galena) - 44,853 tons. The production for 1925 was 10,853 tons, of which 16%, produced in Korea, went to Japan, and 84% produced in Hunan, went to Europe.Manganese Ore (Pyrolusite) - 142,567 tons. The production for 1925 was 42,567 tons, of which 94.3% went to Japan.Tin Ingot - 33,480 tons. In 1925 the exports to Hong-Kong were 8880 tons of usual rough tin of 94% to 96%. Most of this was refined to No. I Chinese quality of 99.3% and exported to U.S.A. and Europe, owing to the good price ruling.Sulphur - 12,000 tons. Sulphur is included in this list in order to explain how its production led to the discovery of some other ores.Wolfram - 19,668 tons. The production in 1925 was 5868 tons, most of which came from the Quee Mee mountain district in South Kiangsi, from the detrital deposits. Civil disturbances prevented the usual output from Hunan border.Zinc Ore (Blende) - 134,190 tons. Exports for 1925 were 34,190 tons of low-grade ore, averaging 30% zinc, 14% lead, and 7% silver...

This paper refers to the open cut mining practice developed at Western Mining Corporation's Kalgoorlie Gold Operations (K.G.O.). Mining activity was centred attwo areas, namely W.M.C.'s Siberia "Sand King" and"Missouri" open cuts plus W.M.C.'s "Great Boulder" and K.M.A.'s "Horshoe" and "Morrison -Hannan's Star" open cuts in Fimiston.Kalgoorlie Gold Operations was set up initially to look after W.M.C.'s open cut interests in and about the Kalgoorlie area. The first mine commenced was, the Sand King open cut, approx 75 km NW of Kalgoorlie. it was here that the requirement for a highly selective form of mining first became apparent.

A major challenge for closure planning at mining operations below the water table is evaporation from final void pit lakes and concentration of salts, which can impact on downstream groundwater (and surface water) flows and quality. Where such impacts are deemed unacceptable, the closure approach that is often adopted is to infill the final voids with waste rock to above the pre-mining water table to prevent the development of a pit lake and subsequent evaporative losses. BHP Billiton Iron OreÆs Marillana Creek (Yandi) mining operations face these issues. The orebody is a channel iron deposit that forms the major aquifer in the region, which will be completely mined as a series of elongated open pits over tens of kilometres. The major constraint on mine closure planning was the stripping ratio of less than one, which means that there is insufficient waste rock to infill all areas to the pre-mining water table. Hydrogeological investigations and groundwater modelling indicated that standard mine closure approaches would result in pit void lakes becoming saline sinks unless the residual void geometry was optimised to minimise evaporation and maximise throughflow. The solution developed is a cost-effective long-term mine plan that meets all mine closure objectives, and involved:the selective infilling of all pits, largely using run-of-mine waste dumping with limited re-handling; the diversion of the major part of up-catchment creek flows around the mining operations to allow mining of the resource under Marillana Creek crossings, which in turn restricted overall aquifer recharge and reduced the elevation of the long-term water table; the diversion of some minor creek tributary flows into specific locations within the mine path to induce hydraulic gradients to maintain groundwater throughflow and water quality; and close integration of mine plan optimisation (mining and waste dumping schedules) with groundwater modelling scenarios to achieve acceptable environmental outcomes. This approach is designed to result in no reduction in downstream surface water flows or quality, maintenance of adequate downstream groundwater throughflow to support groundwater dependent ecosystems, and no reduction in the beneficial use status of the downstream groundwater resource.

The development and operation of three large open cut brown coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, requires a wide range of drilling techniques for coal resource evaluation and stratigraphic defi- nition, material property identification, open cut dewatering, and instal- lation of groundwater monitoring bores. This paper describes in detail the range of drilling techniques, equip- ment used and associated problems with drilling, in a deep sedimentary basin containing several major brown coal seams, multiple aquifer sys- tems of varying pressures and thin layers of hard materials including pyrite, siderite and basalt. Methods of rotary drilling include wireline core drilling, conventional core drilling, conventional flush drilling, diamond core drilling, reverse circulation air lift drilling and bucket auger drilling. Cable tool drilling is also used for strata definition and aquifer sampling.

Australians have always been great travellers but, traditionally Australian companies have been very conservative in contrast to more daring individual Australians. During the 1960s, '1970s and 1980s, the Australian companies spent much of their time exploring in Australia. It was only some of the major companies like CRA and BHP that had explored in places like Bougainville and Chile. However, during the mid-1980s some of the smaller companies started looking beyond their shore towards other opportunities in other countries. Why did they do this? Were they pushed or did they jump? And where did they go?

The economic future of the Palmer Goldfield lies with both the gold mining and the tourist industries. An equitable solution to the competition between the two involves putting a dollar value on the historical evidence there for our Australian heritage.On 23 October 1986 the Queensland Government gazetted the Palmer River Reserves R16 of 16 200 hectares, in recognition of the competing land uses emerging in the region. The intention is that historically significant gold mining sites and relics will be preserved in situ with provision for continued gold exploration and mining.This paper explores and explains the administrative process of achieving a set of Management Guidelines for Rl6 within the Queensland political milieu. The result of that process is the achievement of some of the highest preservation standards in Australia, prohibiting surface disturbance of defined Category 1 sites, and no mining proposal has yet been refused approval.The Palmer Goldfield R16 experience is a major step in achieving a co-ordinated approach to both current mining and preservation of Queensland's mining heritage.

A simulation model was used to study the performance of various types of screen cloth on industrial vibrating screens. The model takes into account the effect of loading upon screen performance and predicts both themass flow rate and size distribution of the screen products.It was found that the use of the simulation model allowed the reconstruction of data for identical conditions and hence has simplified the analysis of the comparative performance of the screens. The dependence of performance upon operating conditions was found to vary markedly with screen cloth type.

The minerals industry is facing a productivity and investment crisis. The ‘Millennium Super Cycle’ from 2003–2011 was an unprecedented period of growth and investment resulting in increased throughput and development of lower grade resources to meet demand. During the boom quantity became more important than quality with throughput the key metric. This was accompanied by a general trend of decreasing feed grades across all commodities that was offset with higher production volumes.Current industry perception is that feed grade depletion is an unavoidable consequence of ore deposit geology and mass mining technologies for increasingly mature mining operations. In typical crush-grind-float operations value recovery only takes place at ~1–200 micron particle size during flotation, ie 3–4 orders of magnitude size reduction compared to primary feed. For increasingly low-grade deposits the cost of energy and capital intensity required to process and reject low value material at micron scale drives poor productivity. An alternative is to deploy a range of coarse (~10–100 mm) separation and rejection technologies. Grade Engineering® is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans.Coarse rejection can be used on size distributions ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) discharge. Grade Engineering® is based on five rock based ‘levers’ linked to combinations of screening, sensor-based sorting and heavy media separation. These involve exploitation of preferential grade deportment to specific size fractions during breakage: differential blasting to condition grade by size at bench scale; sensor based sorting at truck and conveyor scale; and differential particle density.Grade Engineering® is being developed and implemented by a consortium of over 30 mining companies, equipment suppliers and research organisations. Emerging results from collaborative site activities demonstrate potential for generating significant value, which can reverse the trend of declining productivity due to feed grade depletion.CITATION:Walters, S G, 2017. Underground mine planning requires an optimal stope layout as a prerequisite for the definition of an optimal production schedule. The procedure to generate an optimal stope layout considers an orebody model and economic parameters as inputs. It evaluates all possible combinations of mining blocks and creates a set of stopes by satisfying the physical mining and geotechnical constraints. Thus, the procedure is computationally complex, and generating a solution to the problem is a challenge. This paper presents an implementation of a new heuristic algorithm that solves the stope layout problem. In two case studies, the algorithm achieves 11.2 per cent and 22.5 per cent superior solutions to the industrially available maximum value neighbourhood approach.CITATION:Sandanayake, D S S, Topal, E and Asad, M W A, 2014.
