The history of the discovery. and successful development of the offshore Gippsland Basin oil and gas fields has been well docu- mented in contemporarary and more recent industry and profes- sional literature. With the development of new technology and materials of construction, chloride-based hydrometallurgical routes have gained accept- ance as a viable alternative to sulphate-based routes. A number of commercial and pilot plants built and operated over the last decade have provided invaluable experience and con- fidence in their use. Chloride hydrometal- lurgy, with or without pyrometallurgical pre- treatment, is particularly attractive for pro- cessing complex Cu/Pb/Zn/Ag concentrates, nickel mattes and chalcopyrite concentrates. This review outlines recent developments, dis- cusses advantages, as well as indicating some of the problems still to be solved.

Steel rolling mill product finishing pro cesses gradually become or often already are unsuited for current production and marketing conditions. Indications are made as to what has been done to (i) rectify situations of this kind and, (ii) to reduce both product finishing time and costs. Over the last 15 years the contract mining concept has developed into an integral part of the Australian mining industry. Today it is a $2 billion per annum industry with the potential to continue to grow at a rate of between ten and 20 per cent. Australian contract miners have also exported the concept overseas where growth prospects are unlimited. The industry today is at a cross-road where both contractors and mine owners must consider the current state of the contract mining industry and where it is heading. To look at the present and the future, it is necessary to look back at the history of contract mining and why it has developed. Current industry concerns can then be summarised and the areas that need to be considered to enable the industry to prosper, reviewed. The ultimate goal is to reach solutions with benefits to both the mining companies and the contractors.

The outcome of future metallogenic research will be important to everyone because it will. have a profound impact on our ability to find new deposits of non-reservable mineral resources. The rate of discovery of shallow orebodies is slowing. This is very evident for base-metal deposits but is becoming increasingly apparent for gold deposits. Alluvial gold mining in New Zealand and in particular on the West Coast underwent a renaissance during the early 1980's. This was based on two main factors: a) the sharp rise in the gold price b) the advent of the hydraulic excavator with which to mine the auriferous gravels. The scale of operations varies considerably. A small operation typically consisting of one or two people using an excavator to feed either a land based or pontoon mounted (floating) gold recovery unit, which will typically feature a rotary screen with or without a tailings stacker with the screened fines < 10 - 15 mm) fed over riflle tables. The largest screening plants of this type are operated by DML Resources in their Arahura and Mikonui mining operations where the plants have the capacity to screen up to 250 m3 of gravel per hour. These plants usually employ jigs and centrifugal concentrators for gold recovery. Unique amongst current operations is the Grey River Dredge, a bucket ladder dredge capable of processing 700 m3 per hour similar to those that operated earlier this century. Gold concentration is by a series of jigs. The number of plants operating in recent times peaked at around 130 in 1987 (coinciding with a nominal average gold price of $751) and since that time has steadily declined to 80 units in 1993 and about 45 - 50 units today. This cycle of rapid expansion and then steady decline has been repeated on the West Coast since the original gold discoveries in the mid nineteenth century.

With increased pressure for companies to cut costs during design of new mineral processing plants, overall plant design has changed over the last decade with less design for feed blending and less installed surge capacity. This has changed the operability of new mineral processing plants, where disturbances due to variable ore types have resulted in the evolution of new control techniques. These techniques are necessary to maintain stability and optimise the performance of these new plants. This paper describes the benefit of applying these new control techniques in a new mineral processing plant in Australia utilising RockwellÆs ControlLogix system architecture.

lbis new concept in geology is introduced by a reinteipretation of the Archaean stratigraphy of the greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia. Evidence is presented to show that the recorded Archaean succession of the Eastern Goldfields Province is composed of two distinct groups of mafic/ultrarnafic and felsic igneous rocks which, together with sediments, form alternating sequences represented by Cycles 1 to 4; Cycle 5 consists entirely of sediments. Recorded stratigraphy for the Murchison and corre1atives of the Southern Cross Subprovinces conform to this pattern. The five basic components are referred to as Unit 1 to Unit 5. A major erosional unconformity between Units 3 and 4 extending across the Craton is identified as a locus of potential major gold occurrence, including fossil placers, where suitable structural situations exist; Units 1 and 3 are identified as potential hosts of gold and nickel deposits; Units 2 and 4 for gold and base metals.

Fluor, together with our clients, has yielded significant reductions in the total cost of mining projects by employing a systematic and methodical process of cost reduction. This paper outlines this structured approach to reducing the total cost of projects through the gathering of information, the evaluation of the zero base design, and the development of the execution strategy for the project in the study phase.Over the recent iron ore boom the cost of growth projects escalated rapidly due to a variety of factors including the engineering cost of re-designing facilities, construction in remote areas and an increase in the ‘perceived’ capital requirements for maintainable and operable facilities.Fluor has made strategic steps towards safely reducing the capital intensity of projects, by working with clients to develop zero base designs which utilise the minimum technical requirements in order to meet the function of the plant and then add cost for safety, maintenance and operability only where clearly justified.This paper has set forth a structured three phased approach to focus the team on reducing capital cost while maintaining a low increase in engineering effort.The initial ‘gather’ phase focuses the team on acquiring information and identifying decisions that will need to be made so that the team can prioritise and focus the attention on areas that will provide the greatest benefit. Within this phase the identification of zero base design requirements, review of lessons learnt and analysis of capital cost levers, allows the team to identify the key decisions on the project that will affect the capital cost.In the subsequent ‘evaluation’ phase the team established the zero base design, using the hierarchy of cost reduction as a guide to focusing the team’s attention on high yielding cost saving opportunities.In the final phase the team develops the execution strategy which will yield the least cost using strategies and tools such as modularisation, standardisation, replication, strategic sourcing and 3D design.CITATION:Merrells, J, 2017. The aim of this paper is to broadly review the purposes of valuations and the methods used to calculate them. Examples are provided by coal and alluvial gold properties. Important factors are consistency, how to deal with uncertainty, and the selection of discount rates. The purposes of valuation are seen as: 1.  valuations for sale; within this category are sales to third parties, sales between partners, and vendor valuations for prospectuses; 2.  to provide bankable estimates for financing; and 3. to provide values for local body rating. The methods used depend on the purpose of the valuation and the amount of information to hand.

The Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator (HVCCC) Limited is the primary planning organisation responsible for the export of coal through the Port of Newcastle, Australia. HVCCC stakeholders include producers (mining companies), rail track owners, above rail operators, and terminal operators. The HVCCC is tasked with coordinating the activities of all the corresponding parts of the coal export supply chain so as to maximise the system efficiency. The HVCCC also has a forward looking planning role: with demand for coal expected to double in the next decade, strategic capacity planning is a core activity for the HVCCC. Optimisation and simulation models are key aids in such activity. They are used to suggest and evaluate infrastructure expansions and operating policy changes. These models require input data in the form of shipping stems, which are arrival streams of ships at the port, together with their cargo types and composition, and date and time of arrival.Although everyone is familiar with the expression ægarbage in equals garbage outÆ, relatively little research is dedicated to the issues surrounding input data generation. In this research we seek to redress this, and have developed a method for generating high quality shipping data. Shipping stems used as input should be realistic, reflecting key characteristics of historical patterns. They should accurately represent future demand scenarios. Yet they should also have controllable parameters that can be used to test what-if scenarios, such as are required by the HVCCC to answer questions about future infrastructure or operational plans.Here we review our process for achieving this, and give a case study analysing the effects of different shipping stems on the performance of the coal chain, as measured by a capacity assessment tool. The latter is an optimisation model that takes shipping stem and infrastructure data as input, and calculates key supply chain performance metrics. The potential benefits of alternative demand management strategies are analysed by measuring the performance of the coal chain given different shipping stems obtained via the stem generatorÆs controllable parameters.

Recent advances in X-ray diffraction (XRD) technology have made it possible to conduct powder XRD measurements on samples at high temperatures during reaction. State-of-the-art detectors are now capable of rapidly acquiring diffraction patterns across a wide angular range (typically 120"20) enabling phase transformation rates to be measured directly during sample reaction. In this study, the phase transformations during the reduction of hematite to metallic iron by five per cent hydro ºen in nitrogen gas mixtures, were measured in situ between 500 - 700 C. Complete X-ray diffraction patterns were acquired within 15 seconds every one minute, enabling direct measurement of the transient phase abundances during the reaction. The data were quantitatively analysed by the Rietveld method to yield the abundances of hematite, magnetite, wustite and metallic iron, as functions of time during the reduction process. A first-order reactions-in-series model was proposed, and the reaction rate constants and activation energy were determined from the time-dependent phase abundance data.

In the extraction of level bridge pillars in the South Mine by square-setting methods the general practice is to work transversely from the hanging wall in narrow sections three or four sets wide to the depth of the bridge-usually three sets. When the working block attains an area of twelve square sets, sand filling is run in, either by pneumatic (Proceedings No. 123, 1941) or hydraulic methods, in order to control the settlement of the general area and prevent the development of undue weight in the stope. Upon completion of the filling operations, or coincident with them, ore breaking is resumed and the transverse section of the bridge pillar gradually reduced. A number of these parallel sections may be working at the same time.In preparing a block of sets for filling a great deal of paddocking is required, both to contain the filling and to preserve access to ladderways and ore chutes which may be situated at some horizontal distance. Looking back 25 years, the role of the drill and blast engineer in an Australian mine seemed relatively simple, with the primary focal points being scheduling of the drill rigs, oversize control, and budget control with respect to consumption of both explosives and drill consumables. The choice of explosive selection was relatively simple, though many mines were becoming involved in trials of slurry explosives, emulsion blends, and low density ANFO blends. Guidelines to assist the engineer towards specific fragmentation targets were scarce, environmental constraints were light, and computers were rarely found on the desks of any mining engineers. Wall control blasting was in its infancy, with the bulk of attention being given to appropriate slope design and little real attention given to factors such as explosive distribution, and optimum delay timing and sequencing. Quantitative measurement of blasting performance was rare. The science of blasting, for fragmentation control, wall control, and environmental impact control was about to be born, and was heralded in those years by intense efforts by the explosive manufacturers and a proliferation of research centres throughout the world. Since the early 1980s, the role of the Australian drill and blast engineer has gone through a major metamorphosis, and currently requires a greater depth of scientific understanding than any other specialisation within mining engineering.

Reclamation field trials commenced in 1985, two years before the granting of the Mining Licence. The level of pasture production on varying soil depths (0 cm, 5 cm, 15 cm and 25 cm) overlying both tailings and oxidised waste overburden was assessed.   After seven years, the rate of increase of N, C, P and S, losses of Sand P and pH changes were investigated on the plots where grass seed was sown into bare tailings. It was determined that on these plots it would take approximately 24 years to reach the original carbon and nitrogen levels at the mine site. Further tailings trials have been initiated to investigate alternative land use options for the tailings dam. Growth increases of 73% occurred in native species growing directly in tailings, and growth increases of 78% occurred in tailings amended with compost over the first six months. Pasture trials on tailings with and without a compost amendment have also been initiated. Research has commenced to investigate the restoration options for acid producing pit slopes. The early field trials have been put into practice with the restoration of oxidised waste on the tailings embankment. This is progressive with approximately 16 ha restored to productive pasture at present. Yields compare well with those of the most versatile and productive soils types investigated in baseline studies of the area before the tailings dam was constructed.

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013.
