The Wonthaggi coalfield is in South Gippsland, about 90 miles southeast of Melbourne. It is situated on the down-faulted block of the South Gippsland highlands that lies south of the Kongwak fault, between the Powlett River and the sea (Fig. 1). The coal, which is of Jurassic age, occurs in two small, and intensely faulted, limnic basins, that lie on either side of a concealed ridge of Silurian sediments. The coal was first found as thin seams outc1'opping in the cliffs at Cape Paterson, but the seams that are worked at Wonthaggi are concealed beneath a veneer of Cainozoic sands that covers the Jurassic strata, and were found by boring.The c9al seams are worked by the State Coal Mine, which was opened in 1909 to ensure a supply of coal for the Victorian railways, following a prolonged strike in the Newcastle field of New South Wales. INTRODUCTION The association of methane with coal has been known almost since coal was first mined and in general it has been considered the curse of underground coal mining. Historically, most of the effort to handle this methane has been directed at diluting it to a safe level and preventing an explosive mixture of methane and oxygen from forming in any part of the mine. This is generally achieved by in-mine activites. This approach has two principal drawbacks, the severity of which are dependent on local conditions. The first is that the activity associated with the handling of the methane is undertaken in the mine and there- fore competes with the mining activity for the limited space available. The second drawback is that the whole methane handling activity is generally a cost to the coal because methane is so diluted that it cannot be used. This discussion will present a case study in developing solutions to a metropolitan quarryÆs public relations, legal, environmental, and productivity problems. It details an extensive and detailed project to address the blasting practice in a medium sized quarry that is surrounded by residential and industrial zones. The principle work was done over four months duration during the normal production season. It included detailed drilling and blasting audits for baseline information. In addition, geologic characterisation, seismic modeling, correction of deviations from best practices, and implementation and monitoring of precise electronic timing to provide dramatic solutions for the quarry. The quarry is in the near suburbs of a large metropolitan city. It is framed on two sides by residential municipalities and on two sides by industrial zones. At the start of the project, the quarry was in court as a result of the lawsuit by one of the neighboring towns that was suing to close the quarry. The lawsuit had progressed to the advanced stage where in the Judge had appointed an arbitrator to make the decision of continued operation. This arbitrator was to observe our progress and recommend to the Judge the disposition of the case.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to determine the distribution of gold between the products of lead-zinc concentrate smelting in the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF). Bullion, speiss and slag from the ISF at Cockle Creek were used as the starting materials to evaluate the effect of gold and copper content of products on the distribution of gold between phases under conditions simulating those in the ISF hearth. The ratio of gold in bullion to gold in speiss has a mean value of approximately 1.6 and is independent of the gold content of the bullion. The distribution coefficient of gold between bullion and speiss is dependent on the copper level in speiss and is lowered by increasing copper content in speiss. The ratio of gold in bullion to gold in slag is in the range 25 to 5700 and dependent on the gold content of the bullion. For low gold concentrations in bullion of the order of 1 g/t and a bullion to slag ratio of 1:3 the gold loss to slag is expected to be approx- imately 23%. In all tests the gold in slag remained low, in the range 0.05 to 0.5 ppm provided metal prills were not suspended in Slag.

The model described in this paper has been developed for and in close collaboration with the Bong Mining Company Ltd, Liberia/West Africa. When working an irregular deposit a de- tailed short term production schedule becomes necessary in order to ensure an equal and homo- genous concentrator feed. If the irregularity of the ore body exceeds a certain degree, blen- ding facilities have to be provided between the mine and the concentrator, but even then sche- duling of the mine production is inevitable to meet the given requirements of the blending bed and to keep these conditions steady for at least some of the successive periods. To assist the planning department in set- ting up optimal production schedules a computer model has been developed using a linear pro- gramming approach. The deposit is divided into equally shaped blocks containing defined quali- ties and quantities of ore and/or waste; from which one has to select those quantities of ore which will meet the requirements of the blen- ding bed. This paper outlines the aims, objectives and means by which a life of mine land use plan was established for Comalco's bauxite mine at Weipa. Comalco realises the need to strategically plan for future mining activities and still minimise the impact of operations on the natural resources of the region. With this realisation long-term forward planning has been implemented to improve the Company's ability to select future sites for mining, industrial use, agriculture, town expansion and conservation purposes.The knowledge of mineral, water, soil and animal resources has expanded dramatically in the past decade. During 1990 Cornalco purchased Geographic Information System technology which has allowed previously collected resource data to be presented in map form. These maps as part of the Life of Mine Land Use Plan are both information based and strategic which can be efficiently updated. The maps allow a broad audience from engineers, geologists, environmental scientists and site managers to government officers and the general public to comprehensively view and scrutinise the operations.

A number of suggestions have been made to improve the design of cells used for electro winning and electro refining of metals. Most of these designs have been aimed at increasing the current density used in order to improve cell capacity, although the purpose of some has been to produce electro deposited metals in a continuous manner. The Junction Reefs gold bearing deposit is situated on the Lyndhurst Mining Field in mid-west New South Wales. It is located within a triangle of three country towns namely, Blayney, Cowra and Canowindra, all three townships are approximately 25 km from the current operational mining leases. The district is well developed, having been settled for more than a cen- tury. However, being close to the Cities of Orange and Bathurst it is real- lised, instantly, that mining leases have been pegged, in this area, almost boundary to boundary. The lease patterns are, with few exceptions, those which had been estab- lished more than seventy-five years ago. These types of lease patterns may not assist the proper exploitation of a large district where there have been many discoveries of gold, copper and other metals.

The Escondida Porphyry Copper Deposit, located in Chile's II Region 160 Km to the southeast of the city of Antofagasta, is currently owned by Minera Escondida Limitada, a company comprising The Broken Hill Proprietary (57.5%), Rio Tinto Zinc (30%) a group of Japanese companies represented by Mitsubishi Corporation (10%), and the International Financing Corporation of the World Bank (2.5%) (Fig.l)By 1983, most of the reconnaissance drilling was completed and prefeasibility studies were regularly updated as new drilling results were reported and project concepts re-evaluated (Fig.2). In October 1982 the project was transferred from Exploration Management to Operations. By the end of 1984 project pre-development activities, including inpit development drilling, geological exploration, water resource definition, an underground bulk sampling program and the initial project feasibility report, were completed.

The key to the successful debt funding of a new mining project, whether in economically established or developing nations, is the submission of a comprehensive feasibility study. The feasibility study forms the basis from which the resource banker can construct financial models which govern the amount of available funds, the conditions which control the supply of such funds and the time period over which the loan may be repaid. The bank will wish to ensure that the feasibility study is the best representation and confirmation of reality possible because this model is the basis of the loan security package. Thus the study will be vigorously interrogated by independent experts in all its elements including the ore reserve, mineability, metallurgy, operating and capital cost profile, environmental factors and management.

This paper reviews the historical data on relative height changes of landmasses with respect to sea level for Pacific Rim countries.It discusses existing theories of the Greenhouse effect, and the interaction with the vertical movements of the continental plates which leads to different effects for different places. Possible future scenarios are described and directions for future research and measurement programs are given.Relative sea levels are governed not only the increase of water from deglaciation but also by a range of other factors such as variable water storage in lakes and the atmosphere, thermal expansion of the ocean, ocean currents, and the shape of the ocean and the continents. Sea floor spreading, for example, is ultimately more significant than deglaciation in sea level control but is generally much slower.

The high oas emissions which are associated with high production lonowall mining have provided a need to investigate the limitations and reouirements of the various gas control methods. The major relationships between oassiness and various other parameters are presented with computer analysis being adopted to assess the respective correlations. Some of the relationships are studied in detail with emphasis being placed on methods for overcomino the changes in conditions resulting from high production levels. The importance of the various drainage systems which can be adopted to combat high gassiness levels are analysed. Logical and necessary steps are also proposed for gassiness prediction and data monitoring as well as various combinations of gas drainage systems. The gassiness prediction methods which are discussed outline the need for a sound knowledge of the established worldwide methods together with a comprehensive study of the local mining and geological environment in order to develop a system which is adaptable to the changing conditions. This is particularly important in mines where high coal production levels are anticipated and the need for accurate gassiness relationships is essential.

It has been identified that particulate matter in the form of suspended solids and bed load has the ability to adsorb heavy metals. Each year Ranger Uranium Mines Pty Ltd (RUM) identifies potential danger areas which could become major sediment sources during the wet season. Methods of suppressing sediment uptake such as hydromulching and coating areas with Poly Vinyl Acetate (PVA) glue are used. Other methods of reducing the sediment load after uptake such as diversion bunds, filters across drains, stone filters, minor sumps and settling ponds are also used. The 1983/84 wet season saw drain sediment loads reduced to acceptable levels before the water reached the outside environment. Studies to qualify and quantify flows from minor drains are still underway.

The measurement of the fragmentation size distribution of a blast muckpile can be achieved directly by screening the entire muckpile. Screening of muckpiles in a production operation is generally not practical due to the logistics and time involved moving large volumes of rock through a screening plant. An indirect technique to assess blast fragmentation size distributions has been developed. This technique uses photographs of the blast muckpile taken at intervals during the excavation cycle. The images from the photographs are input to desktop computer software via a digitiser tablet. The software compilates the rock fragment sizes and calculates a size distribution. This paper discusses the technique and subsequent data analysis. Examples of the application of this technique for the assessment of comparative blast performance are given.

The Charters Towers 1:250 000 Gravity Data Set represents a new initiative of the Department of Resource Industries (DRI, formerly Queensland Department of Mines) to provide high quality regional gravity data over areas of the State that have high potential for new mineral discoveries. The Department has adopted a strategy to upgrade geophysical data to complement the ongoing Regional Geological Mapping Program (RGMP) of this Department and in areas where the data would be of most benefit to the mineral exploration industry. Part of this strategy is to ensure that these data are released within 6 months of data collection.The 1989 Charters Towers survey was completed as a joint project with the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (BMR), and is the first regional geophysical data acquisition project undertaken by the DRI. Prior to this survey, the only gravity data in this area dates from the B MR regional surveys carried out between 1960 and 1967.

The increasing market requirements regarding the quality of products, the enhanced predictability from detailed mine planning, the need for process consolidation and upgrading require continuous investigation on the characteristics of different ore types to be concentrated. This paper addresses the mineralogical and technological characterisation of several itabirite iron ore types and the influence of the composition and mineralogical associations on desliming and flotation. Pellet feed quality and the influence on the major performance indicators, such as weight recovery of slimes, selectivity index, metallurgical recovery, flotation kinetics of iron minerals and gangue is also emphasised. The investigation resulted in a classification of iron ores according to their mineralogical composition, morphology of the crystals, and/or texture and microstructure of mineral particles with respect to desliming and flotation performances.

There is currently a world wide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow charac- teristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A Capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for deter- mining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0 0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦- 319¦C, Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physico- chemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage.

Gold Tellurides are important sources of gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Cripple Creek, Colorado and Vatukoula, Fiji. Unlike free gold, the tellurides of gold are rather refractory and the usual treatment practice has been to oxidize the tellurides, either chemically or by roasting prior to cyanidation of the liberated free gold. There is a large measure of disagree- ment as to the actual cause of the refractory nature of gold tellurides. In order to investigate the leaching chemistry of gold telluride, a study was undertaken on the thermodynamics and kinetics of its dissolution using electrochemical methods. From this study suitable direct leaching condi- tions are suggested. In acidic chloride solutions gold telluride can be leached using iron(III) as the oxidant. At lower acid concentrations the reaction is controlled by the formation of a passivating film of H2TeO3. In alkaline solutions containing cyanide the rate of gold telluride dissolution increases with increasing pH and strength of oxidant. However, this can result in excessive consumption of cyanide in the presence of stronger oxidants.
