Modem blast initiation systems allow users many options for connection and application in the field, and have resulted in more innovative and complex uses of sequencing to influence blast outcomes. However, no tool existed which allowed the blaster to easily and quickly assess the effect of different options. The original requirement was for a computer program which allowed the easy input of blast patterns and the associated initiation sequence, and then permitted the evaluation of different options with respect to established criteria such as the number of holes per delay and angle of initiation. The implementation of this goal saw the development of the SHOTPIan blast sequence design software, with particular emphasis on an easy-to-use menu driven interface and visualisation of the blast sequence. Extensive trialling during development saw the incorporation of additional features requested by industry such as the ability to import from established mine design software packages, and further features such as the calculation of burden relief times. Case studies of the use of the program are provided, where the rapid evaluation of a number of options has enabled blast results to be optimised. Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

There are two mechanisms in the flo- tation process by which particles are transported from the pulp to the con- centrate: bubble-mineral aggregation and entrainment. It is the chemical processes which occur in the pulp which are critical to the success of flotation since they control the floatability of different min- erals and the selectivity which can be obtained. However, these chemical pro- cesses are so complex that metallurgists are still limited in their ability to predict the floatability of particles in industrial circuits by consideration of the minerals present and the chemical environment. The alternative approach to understand- ing flotation is to examine the behaviour of minerals in industrial flotation pro- cesses, to recognise similarities and differences, and to define the "laws" which appear to apply. Using this ap- proach it has been found that minerals float at a rate which is proportional to their concentration in the pulp, and that the rate of flotation of different min- erals is influenced by variables which' affect the pulp or the froth phase. The ultimate application of this approach is the use of models for circuit simulation purposes. It is this alternative approach which is the theme of this paper. One of the most important problems in understanding the technology of flotation has been in defining the characteristics of the particles being floated. Particles entering flotation vary widely in size and mineral composition, and different par- ticle types float at different rates. These rates do not change uniformly as operating variables change. It has been conventional practice to assess flotation performance in terms of the metal contents of total streams because no better method has been available, and this procedure has obscured important effects which occur in

New and existing gravity and aeromagnetic data are used to determine the structure of the Waihi region and to investigate any relationship between structure, hydrothermal alteration and epithermal mineralisation. The 24 mGal, 10 km diameter, negative Bouguer gravity anomaly which occurs south of Waihi has been modelled as a I.5 km deep asymmetrical basin. This basin, the Waihi Depression, is interpreted to be infilled with low-density volcanic rocks of the Uretara Formation and Whitianga Group, overlying older andesites of the Waipupu Formation. To the north and west, the margins of the depression are defined by the Waihi and Mangakino Faults, which have been modelled with dips of 45 - 60¦ to the south and west respectively. The southern and eastern boundaries of the Waihi Depression are defined by smooth, shallow dipping (15 - 20¦) boundaries. The Waihi Depression is interpreted as a fault-angle depression, resulting from southeast extension in the early Pliocene. The Waihi Fault is modelled as an approximately E-W feature, located to the south of Waihi. Small 2 - 4 mGal positive Bouguer gravity anomalies occur north and west of the margins of the depression, and correlate with known areas of hydrothermal alteration and areas of low magnetic gradient.

When Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) purchased its fleet of 18 CaterpillarÆs dump trucks in 1999, as part of its change to owner operated mining, five CaterpillarÆs Computer Aided Earthmoving Systems (CAES) were also commissioned on Komatsu PC8000 hydraulic shovels and Caterpillar D10R bulldozers. Since then the CAES system has been installed and operational on Komatsu PC3000 hydraulic shovel, CaterpillarÆs D10R dozers and Cat 994 front-end loader while Cat 854 wheel dozer has been fitted with CAESbasic. This investment in advanced machine guidance and control technology has proven very beneficial over the years for the Super Pit with improved safety and increased operating efficiency and productivity. The paper brings into focus how the CAES system adaptation in unique mining conditions assists in production gain, equipment operatorÆs safety, flexibility and independence, personnel removal from hazardous areas, acquisition of operational information and improvements in mine planning and design, benefiting the entire mining operation.

Opinions vary widely within the community on what are legitimate environmental social respon- sibilities. The extreme conservationists see the responsibility as the total preservation of the natural environment achieved by opposition to all forms of industrial development that would disturb it. The `growth-at-any-price men' consider it more important to stimulate economic growth, develop new industries, and maximize profit letting the environment take care of itself: within this wide spectrum of concern are the middle-of- the-road men, part of the vast majority, fully aware of the need to compromise to achieve a satisfactory economic growth rate whilst pre- serving to the greatest extent practicable the con- ditions upon which we depend for a balanced self-perpetuating existence. Environmental change is not new. It is the inevitable accompaniment of human activity. Plato wrote in the 5th Century B.C.* of the devastating changes wrought by man and his animals on the ancient world of the Mediter- ranean. Down through the ages rural development to *The Dialogues of Plato: `What are now her moun- tains were lofty, soil-clad hills; her so-called shingle plains of the present day were full of rich soil; and her mountains were heavily afforested-a fact of which there are still visible traces. There are moun- tains in Attica which can now keep nothing but bees, but which were clothed, not so very long ago, with fine trees producing timber suitable for roofing the largest buildings; and roofs hewn from the timber are still in existence. It is my pleasure to deliver the first Keynote Address to the first joint conference between The Australasian Institute of Mining and- Metallurgy and The American Institute of Mining, Metallur- gical and Petroleum Engineers. I am particularly pleased to be participating in this first joint meet- ing as I have been a member of one Institute for 41 years and the other for 35 years. An examination of the membership of both Institutes confirms the fact that the mineral in- dustry is an international one. This has long been the case and basically stems from the occurrence of mineral resources in most countries of the world. It is therefore fitting that these two 'Inter- national Institutes', representing the professions involved in the mineral industry, should choose `International Resource Management' as the theme of the first joint conference. The topic of this Keynote Address is `The mineral equation' or the counterbalancing supply and demand items and the factors affecting them. I propose to attempt to present the overall picture of the mineral equation as subsequent papers and sessions will deal with specific items in more detail. My thesis is broad and deceptively simple; it is that the continued existence and growth of world material civilization depends, in large measure, on the continued use and further dis- covery of world mineral resources. Material civili- zation is used as a broad term to include the pro- duction of man's shelter and tools together with the production of the `consumer' goods and ser- vices needed by society. First let us spend a few minutes looking at the development of material civilization.

Copper was first produced in Australia in 1844, at the Kapunda Mine in South Australia, and, by 18i>0, production exceeded 2,000 tons of copper a year. Output increased ,steadily, reaching a peak of 14,00Qo tons a year in 1867 and 1868, when the Burra Burra and Kapunda Mines in South Australia and the Peak Downs Moine at Clermont, Queensland, were at the height of their production. At this period, Australian copper formed a considerable percentage of the world's supply, its output equalling, for a short time, that of the United States. Production declined to between 3,000 and 4,000 tons a year after the closing of' these three mines between 18717 and 1879, and, at this stage, the Australian output came chiefly from the Wallatoo and Moonta mines in South Australia. About 19000, it began to rise again, with the extension of the railway to the copper fields of Chillagoe and Cloncurry, and, between 1905 and 1912, was at its greatest, with a maximum of 47,774 tons of copper in 1912. During this period, Australia contributed 4,7 per cent. of the world's annual production, and ranked among the six major copper-producing countries of the world (Table 1).

The Mount Morgan eopper-gold orebody is contained within a series of Mid-Devonian volcanics which occurs as a roof pendant within Permian granite. The ore minerals comprise pyrite, chalcopyrite, and local aggregations of magnetite and pyrrhotite. Silver-rich gold (electrum) is disseminated through the ore usually in ultrafine to sub-microscopic dimensions. Accessory minerals include marcasite, digenite, chalcocite, covellite, sphalerite, bismuthinite, molybdenite, calaverite, petzite, and cassiterite.Very minor accessories include cubanite, tetrahedrite, galena, arsenopyrite, hematiIe, goethite, and rutile. The gangue minerals are quartz, predominantly, with minor amounts of chlorite and sericite.Study of microtextures of a representative suite of specimens from Mount Morgan does not reveal any criteria indicative of metasomatic replacement but does show, in the case of pyrite, evidence strongly suggestive of annealing recrystallization. Other textures in pyrite indicate porphyroblastic growth of the iron sulphide.It is inferred that the Mount Morgan orebody is genetically related to the volcanic rocks and was later contact metamorphosed by the intrusive granite or by the series of intermediate to basic dykes that transect inmine area. On this basis the Mount Morgan orebody would be a contact metamorphosed volcanic hydrothermal deposit emplaced, according to recent studies, along a pipe-like zone of brecciation.

Mine gas control is a major issue in most of the gassy underground coal mines, due to its direct impact on safety, production delays and cost of production. Analysis of the gas data, from different collieries in Australia showed that longwall gas emissions have increased substantially over the years. Simply increasing the number of goaf holes in the panel or decreasing goaf hole spacing seems not to be effective, in controlling high goaf gas emissions. A major research project has been undertaken by CSIRO in collaboration with mine sites to address this goaf gas control issue with the aim of developing effective and optimum goaf gas drainage strategies. The project has combined extensive field studies with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, to characterise goaf gas flow patterns and develop effective gas control strategies. The research work specifically involved review of gas control issues at field sites, goaf gas monitoring, tracer gas tests, CFD simulations and extensive field trials. Field demonstration studies of the new optimum strategies have been conducted at two collieries in Australia. The project results have shown that the optimum strategies were highly successful, in improving the overall efficiency of goaf gas drainage systems, at both the field sites. Results of the goaf gas flow characterisation studies and field demonstration studies are summarised in this paper.

This paper describes the design and construction of twin 400 m long road tunnels as part of the Northern Motorway Extension Project in Auckland, New Zealand. Construction of the tunnel civil works is now completed and installation of mechanical and electrical systems is well underway. The tunnels are expected to be open for traffic at the end of 2008. The paper will address the design aspects of the project including: tunnel alignment and cross-section, geotechnical conditions and rock support, waterproofing and concrete lining and fire and life safety. The paper will cover the bored tunnel section, the cut-and-cover tunnel section, cross passages and portal structures. The design brief included a requirement for the tunnels to be a gateway to Auckland and this required particular attention to be given to the visual appearance of the finished tunnel structure. The final arrangement of the portal structures and a requirement for recesses in the concrete lining for emergency cabinets, deluge pipework and cable runs, reflects these requirements. The tunnels were excavated by a roadheader and road planer using a heading and bench. Initial support was provided by a combination of lattice girders, cement grouted rock bolts and steel fibre reinforced shotcrete. The permanent lining consisted of installation of a drainage geotextile and waterproof membrane, followed by cast in situ unreinforced concrete. Each portal consists of a cut-and-cover section. This paper describes the tunnel construction methods, including the particular requirements for safety, the environment and community relations. The tunnel is fitted with a compartmentalised deluge system for fire fighting purposes. The tunnel control centre is incorporated into the control centre for Auckland Harbour Bridge, some 30 km from the tunnel location.

This paper examines the impact of the time value of money on the location of mining facilities, as examplified by a central processing plant serving several mines. Three approaches, the Euclidean-Distance Approach, the Gravity Centre Approach, and the Rectilinear-Distance Approach, commonly applied to a single facility location problem were employed in the study. The objective function in all three models was the updated value of the following three costs influenced by the processing plant location and defined within the framework of the continuous model of value representation and the continuous interest rate convention: I. the costs of transporting the useful mineral from the mines to the plant, 2. the costs of constructing the transportation links between the mines and the plant, and 3. the costs of maintaining these links over time. Results of the study show a substantial impact of the time value of money on both the processing plant optimal location and the opportunity cost of neglecting the time value of money in the locational considerations.

The practical application of LaneÆs theory on optimum cut-off grade policy has to date proved difficult for selective stoping in large-scale underground mining. The key to determining an optimum cut-off grade is the ability to rapidly perform complex mine layout designs combined with rapid output of multiple potential schedules. This paper describes aspects of the detailed investigation into estimating a practical static cut-off grade for the two main orebodies in Mount Isa MineÆs Enterprise Mine. Rule based automated scheduling software was used to evaluate thirteen different stoping layouts (including design infrastructure and capital development) of the Enterprise MineÆs two main orebodies, with over 200 schedules generated. The investigation illustrates the application of commercially available software to solve the problems of generating multiple cut-off grade stope designs and achieving the otherwise insurmountable task of rapidly generating and valuing multiple scenarios for each stoping layout. Each scenario was evaluated using modelled net cash flows of the mining, concentrating and smelting operations of the company and calculating NPV. The cut-off grade for each orebody was selected based on the cut-off grade that achieved maximum NPV û with an appropriate production rate. Underground mine scheduling is a complex task involving the adherence to a number of simple scheduling rules and the balancing of several competing drivers. The study also found that: while each scheduling rule itself is simple, the compounding complexities of their interaction preclude manual scheduling from being a realistic option. there is a maximum sustainable rate of production possible for any given stoping layout, and that the actual maximum production rate is also a function of the required number of years of sustainable production. the optimal cut-off grade was different for each orebody û a recognition of the impact of the different characteristics of each orebody.

Shortly after the outbreak of war in September, 1939, it became apparent that considerable quantities of certain metals and alloys which at that time were not being produced in Australia would be required in increasing amounts for the prosecution of the war effort.Australian industry had relied on overseas sources of supply for the relatively small quantities of many special metals which were needed under peacetime conditions. As the war progressed so great became the demand for mooy of these alloys in Great Britain and other allied countries that it was necessary for them to place an embargo on the export of these materials, and thus it soon became evident that if Australia's production of munitions was to expand and develop it would be necessary for her to become independent of overseas sources for many of these essential 'items. The shipping position also became very acute, and this, accentuated the difficulties of obtaining these alloys. Because of the conditions outlined aqove, the manufacture of over thirty different metals and alloys .was undertaken at Newcastle during the past decade. It is with two of these that this paper proposes to deal. They are tungsten powder and ferro-silicon.TUNGSTEN POWDERTungsten is a rare and comparatively new metal. It is used extensively in the production of high speed tool steel, some grades of which contain up to 22% tungsten. Such articles as twist drills, reamers, milling cutters, and lathe tools are made from tool steel, and the demand for these during the war years was greater than ever before. The use of tungsten in the manufacture of high speed steel was first developed in 1914 by the Germans, and when it was discovered that they were using tungsten bearing steel for the production of munitions there began a world-wide search for ores of this rare metal.

Vaal Reefs Mine annually produces some 75 tonnes of gold. Stoping operations, using a scattered mining method, are conducted on several reef horizons within Witwatersrand Supergroup metasediments of the Klerksdorp Goldfield. Current grades average 7.19 g/t Au over a 133cm stoping width. The reef horizons, of which the Vaal Reef is the most important, consists of 2.9Ga palaeoplacer deposits at the base of low angle unconformities. Typically, a reef comprises a mature quartz and chert conglomerate with a siliceous matrix and intergranular pyrite and carbon. Geologists are primarily responsible for underground mapping and supervising of drilling programs. To a lesser extent they are involved with sampling, grade control, ore reserve estimation, mine planning and rock mechanics. Due to a general decline in grades of gold mines, an escalation of production costs, and with the current weak gold price, it has become essential to improve production efficiencies. Consequently the role of the mine geologist has moved away from that of simply keeping the mining people "on reef'. Greater emphasis is being placed on refining geological models to assist in selective mining of the reef and investigations of secondary reef horizons are encouraged. Exploration within fault losses and re-evaluation of pillars is important, and geologists are becoming more involved with sampling and grade control exercises.

PT Freeport Indonesia operates a large copper and gold mining operation near Tembagapura, Papua (formerly, Irian Jaya), Indonesia. This is a remote location with its own set of unique operational characteristics. The mining and concentrating operations typically produce a concentrate containing 2500 tpd of copper and 6000 oz of gold per day from the combined mining of a 45 000 tpd (ore) block cave operation (DOZ Mine) and a 190 000 tpd (ore) open pit mining operation (Grasberg Open Pit). The Grasberg Open Pit mine will be exhausted in 2015 at which time FreeportÆs operations will entirely underground mining methods. The Common Infrastructure Project (CIP) incorporates the elements required for the shift to underground mining at a production rate approaching 200 000 tpd. The AB Adit portion of the CIP will provide deep level access to the Grasberg Block Cave (below the Open Pit), Kucing Liar, Big Gossan, and the Mill Level Zone orebodies. Commencement of the project was September 2003. The Grasberg Block Cave is planned to start production in 2014. This paper provides details on the project scope, innovative contractual framework, advancement of mining methods throughout the life of the operation, equipment selection, manpower selection, training, geological, and socio-political conditions related to the project.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Base metal sulfides at the Currawong volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in the Lachlan fold belt of Victoria, south-east Australia, were formed in the late Silurian, but D2 deformation of the deposit in the Devonian Bindian orogeny was responsible for structural repetition that created the resource. The primary sulfide lenses were stacked by reverse-sense shear zones within a volcano-sedimentary sequence dominated by dacitic intrusions and turbidites. Shear zones were localised along lithological contacts, including the margins of the sulfide lenses. The competent dacitic intrusions did not fold during D2; folding was restricted to the packages of metasedimentary rocks. Overturning occurs within, but not between, the metasedimentary packages. The overall geometry of the deposit is that of a duplex, but the detailed shape does not conform to idealised duplex types, probably because of post-D2 deformation. A significant complicating factor for understanding the deposit, and for resource evaluation, is the dramatic variation in deposit geometry along strike, which may also be due to post-D2 deformation. The present day configuration of the deposit results from constructive thrust repetition of what may have been a single ore lens and destructive along-strike disruption controlled by rheology.CITATION:Blenkinsop, T G, Macklin, D and Hammond, R, 2015.
