Neutralisation, normally using lime, is the most widely used method for treating high flows of acid mine drainage (AMD). Lime costs can be very high however. If carbonate sources could be used to achieve pH values above six, costs could be greatly reduced. For example, use of locally quarried limestone at Mt Lyell could potentially reduce alkali costs from about $A 3.5 to $A 1 million/year. Methods for enhancing the effectiveness of limestone and magnesite for neutralising Mt Lyell and Savage River AMD respectively have been examined through a series of investigations. Small-scale testwork found that the maximum pH economically achievable with ground limestone was about five, due to slow dissolution rates and surface armouring. The problems of surface armouring were greatly reduced by the use of crushed limestone or magnesite at high pulp densities (75 per cent solids w/w), enabling pH values >6 to be achieved in a practical time frame. The use of particle sizes in the range 6 mm and finer also reduces costs by avoiding the need for grinding, and reduces the problems of solid-liquid separation and solid recycling that arise if large additions of ground carbonate are used. Pilot scale tests were carried out using tumbling drum reactors with limestone and Mt Lyell AMD and a pulsed-bed static reactor with magnesite and Savage River AMD. pH values averaging 6.2 and 6.4 were achieved with Mt Lyell and Savage River AMD respectively. Approximately 80 per cent of feed acidity was neutralised. A preliminary engineering design and cost estimate has been completed on the pulsed-bed reactor and shows that the concept is technically feasible and, if results are confirmed, economically attractive. Further pilot testing is planned.

The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. The anorthosite complexes and related rock types of the Indian Precambrian shield are primarily associated with either cratons or mobile belts. They were metamorphosed under amphibolite to granulite facies conditions. The major rock types are chromite-bearing meta-anorthosites, amphibolites, basic granulites, pink granites and gneisses. This study was carried out on chromitite bearing samples from Sittampundi Anorthosite Complex (SAC), Tamil Nadu, to evaluate the nature and textural settings of platinum-group minerals (PGM), using state-of-the-art technology. The structure and petrology of SAC were well studied by earlier workers (Subramanian, 1956), but only scanty data on geochemical, petrology and mineralogy of PGM are available. The mineralogy of the samples is dominated by chromite (>70 mass per cent), plagioclase (An90) and chlorite-actinolite with orthopyroxene (En85). Details of the petrological evolution of the Sittampundi complex will still have to be studied further, but indications of magma replenishment at the level of chromite formation and the elevated PGE values associated with the chromitite samples make the Sittampundi complex a promising target for future exploration activity.

It is always difficult to sum up an open forum adequately and instantaneously, so, with the privilege of hindsight, and also with some time to reflect, I am exercising the Chairman's prerogative to put together my view of the overall conclusions. Hopefully, these may provide a focus for each Institute to formulate its own programme with respect to mineral industry education. First, in answer to the question, "Should there be Schools of Mines?", there was a very clear 'yes'. However, I reiterate what I said in the introduction to this forum, specific professional education for the mineral industry exists only because the mineral industry sees a need and wants it. If the mineral industry should decide that it does not need professionals with specific mineral industry training, then such training will cease to exist. As alluded by Dr Hackett, if such training ceases to exist, one must then question the need for Institutes of Mining and Metallurgy. Now, there's some food for thought! Specialist schools of mines (metallurgy and geology) can only exist in an environment of genuine interaction with, and support by, industry. For their part, schools of mines, used here in a generic sense, require leadership that is strong but responsive to industry needs. It is the leader that puts his stamp on a school, and, to a large extent, determines whether that school is 'good' or only 'mediocre'.

Project delivery strategies are determined by project context, business case requirements, scale of project, market conditions, ownerÆs capability and preference, contractorÆs experience, resource and skill availability, project location and type of project or facility.Successful project management requires the setting of coherent, effective and realistic business objectives and success criteria. The management team needs to lead, prioritise, resource, align, plan, track and communicate the processes that enable the realisation of these business objectives and success criteria.For any given project there is a unique balance between selection of a simple project delivery strategy that minimises interfaces and a complex strategy that necessarily engages the use of expertise and experience from numerous parties. The right balance for a project between these "book-end cases" is a function of how the project owner or managing contractor defines its objectives and chooses to manage risk, cost, schedule and project quality, in the context of the conditions affecting the project.Selection of an effective project delivery strategy requires a detailed appreciation of the range of external and internal environmental / shaping factors which influence the project. These factors include the project constraints imposed by the business, market or operational environments and the selection of an effective mix of primary (head contract), secondary (mix of vertical and horizontal packages) and tertiary (type of individual contract) strategies. The selection of the primary, secondary and tertiary strategies also shapes the project, the size and responsibilities of the ownerÆs team and the framework for delivery of outcomes.How does an owner or prime contractor decide? What is the optimum for a given project? Those with operations management backgrounds will have different views to those with project and construction management backgrounds.Is the simplest practical approach the best approach? Each and every interface needs to be managed.The owner will want a very experienced team that is engaged directly with the owner. The team will have a track record of successfully performing projects using contractors skilled in their respective disciplines and selected using competitive tendering on brilliantly designed scopes of work and good contract terms, with a fully defined project scope and appropriate schedule, for which all significant risks have been addressed and no scope changes are outstanding. Budget and schedule will be expected to have been developed with a full understanding of the scope, situation, risk management requirements etc.The problem is that these conditions rarely exist. The challenge in selection of a project delivery strategy is to resolve how best to address the inadequacies between the ideal case and the present reality. In the past two decades the global metalliferous mineral industry has trended away from pyrometallurgical (pyromet) and towards hydrometallurgical (hydromet) technologies including biometallurgical (biomet) processes. Pyromet, biomet and hydromet technologies have all developed considerably over this period. New projects have been biased or directed by legislation towards supposedly cleaner and greener hydromet and biomet technologies. The environmental cost and energy cost of pyromet production processes for copper and cobalt are compared with comparable hydromet processes using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The æreal costÆ of the global warming obsession and negative public perception of pyrometallurgy include greater carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption per unit, associated with current hydromet technologies. Specific examples for copper and cobalt produced via the different routes are provided. The poor science involved with the global warming hypothesis is discussed. The use of LCA with sensitivity analysis as a decision making tool for mineral processing projects and technology developers is discussed.

Most mining dredges are adapted from canal/harbour dredges. Their automation and control systems are generally not designed for integrated mining operations. Consequently they have a number of limitations. This paper describes a new dredge control concept which paves the way for improved efficiency and increased production.

Potential areas for improvement in flotation performance were identified during JKTech model development surveys in October 2003. Subsequent implementation of the JKTech recommendations in consultation with flotation cell manufacturer Outokumpu have resulted in gold flotation recovery increases of more than four per cent over a two-year period. One of these recommendations was the installation of High Shear Stators in the Cleaner and Recleaner flotation cells. The High Shear Stator installation project was justified based on simulations completed using JKSimFloat. Bubble size measurements completed before and after installation of High Shear Stators showed a reduction in mean bubble size of approximately 50 per cent in the Cleaner cells. Both Cleaner and Recleaner banks showed a significant narrowing of the bubble size distributions following the installation. Plant gold recovery increase resulting from the installation of High Shear Stators was 1.1 per cent, with a 1.9 per cent increase in flotation gold recovery and 5.4 per cent increase in flotation sulfur recovery. Based on the 1.1 per cent recovery increase and total project cost of less than $200 000, the High Shear Stator Project NPV was $8 200 000 with a 0.25 year payback period.

Blasting represents one of the most relevant unit operations in the process of mineral extraction. The final objective of this operation is that of obtaining an adequate final fragment size distribution such that the combined costs of drilling, blasting, excavation and transport, and crushing/grinding, are minimised, while at the same time producing the minimum possible level of damage to the surrounding rock mass. The strong influence that drilling and blasting has over the subsequent processes involved in the operational cycle makes it imminently desirable to have access to experience and technology which make possible the evaluation and optimisation of this unit operation. The correct use of vibration monitoring techniques offers a number of benefits in terms of their ability to examine any blasting process in detail. In effect, the measurement of particle velocity levels that result from the detonation of each explosive charge offers a means by which it is possible to measure relative efficiency of each charge, interactions (productive and counterproductive) between adjacent charges, and a definitive indication of general performance of any given blast design and its implementation. In this way the monitoring of blast vibrations in rock due to the blast event, can be used as a diagnostic tool, given that the correct interpretation of the vibration traces allows the determination of the level of interaction between the design and operational variables of the blast event. This makes it possible to evaluate, for example, the presence of out of sequence detonations, statistical scatter in the detonation times of pyrotechnic delay detonators, deficient detonation of charges, instantaneous detonation of charges and sympathetic detonation of charges, as well as the general of vibration levels in terms of peak particle velocity, acceleration, and displacement. Another important use of such data is in the construction of a database relating vibration levels to charge weight, hole diameter, and distance, for any given rock type, enables the calibration of predictive vibration models which in turn make it possible to predict the damaging effects of blasting. Knowledge of both the vibration levels induced, combined with quantitative measures of the geomechanical competence of a rock mass make it possible to estimate the probability of producing blast induced damage. The high levels of vibration generated by some blast events may damage the rock mass, producing new fractures or extending and dilating existing fractures. The vibration in this context may be considered as a dynamic stress provoking strain in the rock mass. This paper describes the application of the vibration monitoring technique, particularly in the underground mining environment, and its importance in diagnosis, modelling, control, and optimisation of the development blasting process. The potential of the technique is assessed in the context of achieving substantial techno-economic improvements development blasting results, increasing output whilst minimising the operational costs of the mining process.

The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bear in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked tug, Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No. 2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fau I has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by 2 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It i composed of bands of milky "buck" quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains withi quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.

They are divided into nine classes: structural, pig- ments, process aids, ceramics and refractories, chemical source minerals, abrasives, foundry minerals, gem stones, electrical minerals. Development of deposits is influenced by the dominance of marketing,by the required range of products, the-need for specialized process- ing, place value, and the transportation and distribution of high-bulk, low-cost commodities. Evaluation is different from that of base metals because of differences in geological occurrence, sampling methods, testing, treatment, placing a money-value on the material and the importance of export markets.

The problems encountered with the introduction and use of Isanol underground are described. Significant direct as well as indirect savings have resulted from the use of Isanol. Field studies have shown that the concentration of common gases released during detonation is considerably lower than with conventional nitro-compound type of explosives.

Computer controlled truck dispatching systems is a newly-developed technical system in surface mines with shovel-truck technology. The real time dispatching criteria, as the core of optimal truck dispatching software, are analysed and a new criterion, complex dispatching criterion, is put forward. Dispatching criteria previously proposed include: 1. `Earliest Loading' (EL) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck can be loaded earliest. 2. `Max Truck' (MT) - to assign a truck to the shovel at which the truck will have the shortest waiting time. 3. `Max Shovel' (MS) - to assign a truck to the shovel which has been waiting for the longest time. 4. `Minimum Saturation Degree' (MSD) - to assign a truck to the shovel at the branch where the truck flow saturation degree is minimum. 5. `Minimum Saturation Degree with Truck Cycle time consideration' (MSDTC) - as the MSD principle, with the truck travel cycle also considered. 6. `Fixed Dispatching' (FIX) - to assign trucks to fixed shovels. A system simulation model has been set up for truck dispatching system analysis. A few surface coal mines have been selected for case studies. Equipment waiting times and shift production of the system are obtained as the main outputs of the model. Simulation results show that each dispatching criterion has its own applicable range, no one can absolutely dominate the others. For example, when under-trucked, EL and MT criterion can obtain higher production than the MS criterion; when over-trucked, it is vice versa; while for MSD criteria, better results can be obtained no matter how the truck numbers fluctuate. From the view point of shovel output balance, large fluctuations occur for EL and MT criteria, while a good balance can be obtained for other criteria. In the light of dynamic change of mining system conditions, a single dispatching criterion is not necessarily reasonable. A complex dispatching criterion has been put forward to seek the complex optimum effect. Taking the advantage of each dispatching criteria, the dispatching result of a complex dispatching criterion dominates over individual dispatching criterion and a comprehensive optimum effect can be reached.

The Brolga deposit is a Ni-Co enriched laterite, formed over intensly serpentinised peridotites of the Marlborough Block. Basement lithologies at Brolga consist predominantly of serpentinised dunite, with lesser massive serpentinite shear, gabbro and harzburgite. Investigation of the deposit has defined 17 different varieties of saprolite, ferralite (limonite), and ferricrete. Different combinations of these varieties form three distinct lateritic associations, the Hard, Soft and Dyke Associations. Recognition of key textural and mineralogical features in each association, an understanding of basement geology, and an awareness of current climatic conditions, suggest that: 1. both the Hard and Soft Associations have formed under relatively dry climatic conditions; 2. the Soft Association reflects much poorer groundwater drainage than the Hard Association; and 3. the Dyke Association has formed from a gabbroic basement, and has also been affected by restricted groundwater drainage, caused by poorly permeable marginal serpentinite shears.

In connection with the fact that technology of ore mining by caving system is often used when mining of deposits, characterising by low stability of surrounding rock mass, the main problem for such ore mines is ensuring stability of mine workings, placing in a zone of influence of winning operations. Besides natural disturbance of ore mass, stability of workings depends on the dynamic effect of blasting operations and also on the dynamic effect of structural blocks detaching from the ore mass and colliding with crests of ore pillars in the bottom of a chamber. Decreasing of dynamic stresses may be achieved by way of creation of a compliant porous screen or an ore cushion in the chamber bottom. It is established that maximum levels of compression take place when the first impact impulse occurs, and after that increase of compression of protective slice decreases. Necessary thickness of screen slice was substantiated theoretically with due account of height of structural blocksÆ fall, their mass, deformation modulus of ore mass and ore cushion.

The paper introduces a newly developed multi-function test rig for fracture grouting. This test rig has many functions and its performance is consistent. It can control and adjust accurately the opening degree of fissures and static pres- sure; it can measure automatically the quantity of grout injected; it can measure precisely pressure drop of grout in fissures; it can test the results of injection, including effective dispersed distance, anti-filtration capacity of consolidated body, mechanical strength, etc. It can inject a single or two grouts into one or several fissures at a pressure of 16 MPa. Therefore, it is an ideal test rig for fracture injection. The paper depicts all the components of the test rig, its performance and application of the results obtained from fracture grouting tests. Examples are briefly described.

The effect of multiple tunnels /cavities on the stress and deformation field of the soil media was investigated by using a two dimen- sional plane strain boundary element model. The soil was considered as an elastic, isot- ropic and homogenous media. The interaction of two circular and parallel tunnels/cavities was investigated. Depth of burial, tunnel spacing and surface load width were the system variables considered. The results of this study indicated that the vertical displacements of the soil media increases by decreasing the distance between the adjacent openings, the interaction between the two tunnels/cavities can be neglected for K/D > 5, while the load width has a minor effect except in the dis- tance of D from the center line of the load and for a depth of 2D.

To the south and west of Broken Hill lies the Thackaringa silver-lead district, about 25 miles, and is the locality really of the first silver find in the country long before Broken Hill, the geological fomations of which it much resembles. The Iocks and their structure are identical, except that in this area they are  more irregularly foliated and apparently much more faulted and expose in places quick successions of complete anticlines and synclines, even in a single lease. Saddles of ore respectively are found coinciding with the flexures of the rock but many minor veins otherwise and branches exist and make connections which render the whole a mining problem. It follows then that the surface.of the ground after some denudation in dotted with croppings of all the series, and in such a confusing way that the actual strike of a vein may be even confounded with the dip and readily mistaken for it at a few places. The main character of the outcrops are those usual in the district consisting almost wholly of argentiferous and silicious ironstone, sometimes gossan, which at a depth in a few feet changes to a gangue of very silicious carbonate of iron (crystallised), which occurrence is uniform through this district.The exploration of the lodes has not been extensive as it has not been well understood. Shallow shafts and drives have comprised nearly all the mining at present, which is evident on first sight by the numerous shafts and small excavations dotted 'about, as in an alluvial field. The depth of exploration underground in one place had gone several hundreds of feet, never more than 150 feet vertical from the surface in depth and irregular. The undulations of the most continuous work in this direction is such that it presents at different places successively either a tunnel, shaft, underlay winze, level, or Tise, and is on ore all the time, and where the rocks are faulted (which occurs as much as 30 feet and more) these changes are very abrupt, but for working on are suitably connected by the management.
