The Copper Concentrator at Mount Isa Mines Limited treats approximately 6 Mt of chalcopyrite ore annually. The ore is currently sourced from the 1100 and 3000 orebodies at Mount Isa. Chalcopyrite is the only significant copper bearing mineral, with pyrite, quartz and dolomite being major gangue minerals. Ore is typically 10% chalcopyrite, 11% iron sulphides and 79% non-sulphide gangue. Copper ore is treated through two autogenous mills, two ball mills and a flotation circuit. The autogenous mills replaced a crushing plant, two rod mills and two primary ball mills during 1991. For routine analysis of concentrator performance, composite samples of mill feed, final concentrate and tailings are generated every 4 week period. All samples are sized and size fractions are assayed. Recovery of mineral species to the concentrate are then calculated for each size fraction. Sometimes liberation analysis was also performed by QEM*SEM (Quantitative Evaluation of Material by Scanning Electron Microscope).

Because some rocks require a high strain energy for effective breakage, while others are most satisfactorily fragmented by bubble energy, values of SE and BE are more meaningful than those of total energy. Unfortunately, our extensive knowledge of the effects of certain variables on total energy has not yet been completely supplanted by the influence of these variables on SE and BE values. An experimental study of the packing of a coal heap has been carried out. The bulk density of a coal heap is considered as a function of a number of variables, viz flow rate, conveyor belt speed, the height of the disengagement point of the conveyor belt, coal particle density, moisture content, the size of the heap and coal particle size distribution. The effects of the dimensionless numbers resulting from dimensional analysis on the packing density of a coal heap have been experimentally examined and analysed. Based on the experimental results, equations have been formulated for the estimation of the bulk density of a coal stockpile. The validity of these equations are checked by comparing the predictions with measurements of real industrial Stockpiles.

The Chairman of this afternoon's session is Dick Carter. This afternoon is the culmination of this conference. We've looked in the first session at regulation; in the second session at valuation techniques and this session we look at valuation in practice. Dick's involvement in the mineral industry has been wide ranging and distinguished. Dick has worked with BHP since 1960, when he joined BHP Steel as a commercial trainee. Dick holds a B.Comm. from the Newcastle University College of the University of New South Wales and was educated at the Australian Administrative Staff College and Harvard Business School Advanced Management Programme. During the past decade, he has headed the minerals group's Aluminium Divison, Resource Planning and Development, Non-Ferrous Metals and Business Development Organisations. Dick currently serves as Executive Director of BHP Gold Mines Limited and Managing Director of Ok Tedi Mining Limited. His experience covers Australian Manganese Company, Mineral Deposits Limited, Northern Rivers Rutile, Tasmanian Electrometallurgical Company Limited, Mount Newman Joint Venture, Worsley Aluminium and Carnilya Hill Joint Venture Operating Committee. The author presents various procedures for the choice of dri-ving systems for mining, including the method of indeterminate Lagrange factors and linear programming.The possible application of the points-awarding method is demonstrated.It allows for taking into account both surd and commensurable characteristics of a driving system for mining. Also, the method of economic efficiency factors is outlined.All these methods make possible the best choice of a driving system, from the as-pect of electric energy saving. Two examples are given.

By explosion rock mass behaviour is conditioned by preset complex of rocks natural characteristics. Very important role of blockness, which is percent (share) content at examining massif of natural separatenesses of different dimensions and configurations, separated each from other by the cracks of geological and technogene origin. Besides natural properties of massif the power, detonational characteristics of applied explosives, parameters of explosives charges disposition at massif and technology of explosion influence vastly at lumpiness (granulometric structure) of exploded rocks. The mathematical model of rock mass destruction by explosion had been elaborated and substantiated. It ties mutually the initial data (rocks properties, parameters of the charges disposition) and final results of explosion (granulometric structure of exploded rocks). The program of this complicated problem solving had been compiled. Analysing the received results of the problem solving, one can reveal contribution of each group of influence factors for lumpiness of exploded rocks. This fact creates preconditions for elimination or diminution of negative role of some controlled initial data.

This study begins with the semivario- gram modelling of variables rutile grade and clay content from a beach sand rutile deposit. This is followed by two dimensional block kriging. The deposit was divided into blocks of 30 x 30 x 1.5 m dimensions and the kriged estimate together with the associated kriging variances for each variable within each block were determined. Finally, using the results of the krig- ing program and considering the acceptable limit of clay content together with the cutoff grade for rutile, a method for optimization of mineable thickness and hence the tonnage of ore was applied and the results were dis- Cussed.

In the Renison Bell area of western Tas mania, a series of Lower Cambrian quartzites, shales, carbonate beds ("dolomites"), cong- lomerates, tuffs and argillites have been folded into a broad monocline whose general strike is NW-SE, plunging slightly north and dipping NE. The downwarped eastern side of the monocline is disrupted by a steep (50-800) east dipping normal fault, known as the Bassett Structure, whose throw is in excess of 500 m. A series of flat north dipping normal faults, each with a throw of approximately 50 m, further disrupts the sequence. All major faulting was pre-mineralization. A cassiterite- bearing Devonian quartz porphyry body intrudes this Cambrian sequence 2 km south of the currently operating mine. Of economic importance is the presence of three carbonate beds in the sequence. These carbonates consist of a mixture of calcite, dolomite and siderite. The No. 1 (youngest) and No. 2 carbonate beds are each approximately 15 m thick and are separated by 20 m of hematitic conglomerates and tuffs. The No. 3 (oldest) carbonate bed is approximately 5 m thick and is separated from the No. 2 horizon by 50 m of dark grey, finely laminated shales and quart- zites. Ironstone outcrops on the Savage River were discovered by State Government Surveyor C. P. Sprent in 1877. The limonitic outcrops were initially regarded as the surface expressions of pos- sible tin-bearing lodes, the tin deposits at Mt. Bischoff to the east having been found in 1871. By the turn of the century, shafts, adits and trenches had been developed on the deposits in the unsuccessful quest for gold, silver and base metals. The deposits were first reported as a possible source of iron ore by Tasmania Department of Mines (TDM) geologists in 1919. Modern exploration began in 1956 with the area registering the best magnetic response during an aeromagnetic survey of North- western Tasmania by the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR). The area had previously been reserved by TDM in anticipation of the lifting of the iron ore embargo. Reconnaissance Geologi- cal mapping (TDM) and grid-based magnetometer surveys (BMR) indicated that resources of iron-bearing material could approach hundreds of millions of tons. There has been much debate in recent years regarding the number of Geology (Earth Science) graduates produced in Australia. The key variable has commonly been assumed to be the placement of graduates in the mineral and petroleum industries. Although not wishing to deny the importance of this element, we contend that Geoscience studies should be given to a wider variety of graduates. The essence is to make students and future citizens more environmentally aware. INTRODUCTION Geoscience is fundamental to exploration and to the well-being of the minerals industry and hence the Australian economy. The value of mineral primary products exports for the past three years has been: 1895 $15.3 billion 1986 $14.8 billion 1987 $16.3 billion (Data source: B.M.R) The mining industry supplies about 40% of Australia's export earnings. However the overall value of Geoscience to the Australian economy is much greater. At the opening of the ANZAAS conference in Townsville during May 1987, Sir Bruce Watson , Chairman of the Mt. Isa Mines Ltd., made a plea for a national re-examination of the way science is taught in secondary schools. In particular he emphasized the point that the community should be more aware of the importance of Geoscience and the value of the mining industry to Australia.

In November 1986 the Australian Minerals and Energy Council (AMEC) endorsed an "Australian Code for Reporting Identified Coal Resources and Reserves" for use by the Federal and all State Governments. Before this endorsement there were six different coal codes in use in Australia. The code is broad in nature to accommodate the wide range of coal deposits in terms of rank, quality and geological environment, that are present in Australia. In the code, Resources refer to all of the coal in situ which may have potential for use and the various categories indicate the level of confidence of the assessment. Reserves are those Resources which are planned to be mined and for which such planning has been undertaken. Only minimum guidelines are set by the code and the onus is on the estimator to state clearly the criteria used in any Assessment.

GOLD, the most important and highly coveted valuable metal, is being sought and exploited in almost all the geological environ- ments by the developed, developing and underdeveloped coun- tries of the world. Brazil, one of the five largest countries of the world, has similar geological and lithological environments as of Africa, Australia and Canada and also produces this noble metal. With the recent gold rush in Serra Pelada Hill in Para State of Brazil and the consequent migration of a large number of enter- prises to the Amazon region in search of geological conditions similar to that of Serra Pelada, the status of Brazil in gold produc- tion has been considerably elevated to be among the first five of the world. The principal geological environments or the lithologies where gold can be explored are the greenstone belts, banded iron for- mations, quartz lodes and placers; and the tectonic controls like shear zones in these horizons, or the tectonic relics or the annular- structures that limit the quartz vein systems in felsic as well as volcanogenic systems and epithermal models. As this is the first occasion I have had, and probably will be the only opportunity I shall have, of addressing such a large gathering of members and of student members of the Institute, I desire to- express my very deep appreciation of the honour 'you have paid me in electing me to the office of President for the current year. I realise also that such selection is a tribute to the Company which controls operations here, the centre selected for the annual meeting, but nevertheless there is afforded to the recipient a great deal of pride and of pleasure to hold the highest office in what is, in my opinion, undoubtedly the most important engineering society in Australasia.The past year has witnessed an unprecedented and unparalleled event in the history of the British Empire, and I think that we must all feel a wonderful sense of proud patriotism; the whole world was forced to admire the public calm and the dignity which accompanied the change in our Sovereign Ruler, and great tribute is due to the statesmanship of the Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin. At this time, we should, I think, place on record our prayer, in common with all his people, that His Majesty, King George the Sixth, may enjoy a long and prosperous reign.The meeting at Port Pirie recalls one who did so much for the advancement of mining and metallurgy, especially in Australia. Conventional treatment of oxide and oxidised sulphide minerals by flotation involves the use of sodium sulphide for sulphidisation. Sodium sulphide is generally applied in a "slug" dosing fashion with manual regulation. However, it is recognised that "over addition" or "under addition" of sulphidising reagent can result in poor flotation recoveries. Thus, control of sodium sulphide additions is an important aspect of a sulphidisation circuit, both commercially and metallurgically. In any plant where the flotation feed is "constant" it is possible to operate at a constant rate of addition of sodium sulphide. In actual plant practice, however, it is difficult to maintain a truly constant feed for any reasonable duration because this implies not only a constant feed-rate, but also constant mineral composition and particle size range. These factors can vary significantly and ideally require corresponding variations in the additions of sodium sulphide to maintain optimum recoveries. To cope with variations in the feed, it is essential to have automatic rather than manual regulation of the sulphide reagent addition. The CPS process achieves this control by utilising a sulphide ion-selective electrode as a control instrument in sulphidisation. The CPS process which uses a selective electrode, enables the sulphide ion concentration in the flotation pulp to be monitored and controlled continuously throughout the stage of sulphidisation.

Several drilling programs at Maldon have produced 7790 core samples, which were assayed for gold, with 2825 of the samples assayed for nine other metallic elements. There is a lack of correlation between gold and all other elements. The situation, however, changes dramatically when sorted according to the abundance of arsenic. In the populations where As >200 ppm, there are strong, positive correlations between gold and several elements. There is also a strong positive correlation of Au with the weighted sums and products of all elements with the elemental averages as a weighting factor, and Bi*Sb and Bi*As elemental products. In these populations, there is also a strong positive correlation between the logarithms of Au and logarithms of each element, as well as the elemental sums and products described above. The correlation coefficients increase with higher As cut-off values.All elemental distributions but especially gold show a high-nugget effect and display high skewness and dispersion, low kurtosis, and common outliers. The distributions of their logarithms are several magnitudes less scattered and without outliers. Thus, the logarithmical distribution correlations are best for practical use.Correlation coefficients were T-tested and are statistically significant. The elemental correlations, particularly those of logarithmic values of weighted sums and Bi, could be used as a gold path finding tool at Maldon. After a preliminary assay for gold and arsenic, only samples with As > 200 ppm should be assayed for other elements. Higher values of gold-correlated elements or elemental ratios, in samples with low gold grades, may increase confidence that gold is under reporting due to its highly nuggetty nature.CITATION:Krokowski de Vickerod, J and Ebsworth, G B, 2012. Fine coal particles have been examined with respect to dustiness and its connection with various physical and chemical properties. It appears that a given coal will tend to be dusty ifthe moisture content is low and if the inert maceral content and overall rank are high. The hydrophobicity ofa coking coal (Young-Wallsend) and a steaming coal (Blair Athol) was examined in detail by a dynamic contact angle technique. The YoungWallsend coal had a higher contact angle, on average, than the Blair Athol sample. This result has important implications for dust suppression and associated processes.

Both here and in Australia, the unique commercial and tax features of joint venture are finding favour in forestry, fishing, technology and infrastructure projects. For New Zealand mining companies, joint ventures provide a means of access to foreign know how and investment funds, while retaining their corporate independence and their hard-earned tax losses.   This paper discusses some of the practical income tax and GST considerations where a joint venture structure is contemplated. The first part of the paper considers income tax, and in particular how joint ventures enable companies to access and carry forward tax losses. It explains why a joint venture may be advantageous relative to a jointly owned company.   The second part of the paper concerns GST and the focus is on two aspects: 1.   Joint ventures may be registered for GST. In some instances they have no choice and are required to do so. Where a joint venture is registered in respect of a taxable activity, the members are not permitted to register in respect of the same activity. This may be problem where the member has incurred its own expenses and the member wishes to register in its own right to claim back the GST on those expenses. This paper explores the issue and possible solutions. 2.   It is not uncommon to see joint ventures claiming GST on the costs of production, and the production being sold (and GST is being charged) by the members. In this paper we consider whether these arrangements have a tax risk, and what can be done to make them technically sound.
