An ore reserve estimation is only as meaningful as the quality of the data used. All required information needs to be collected in a careful and systematic manner, and be rigorously checked and verified before estimation commences. In addition to geological, assay and location data, a large variety of other information is required for the estimation process. This includes mining, metallurgical and environmental parameters. Though outside their usual area of responsibility, geologists should be involved in the selection and collection of this additional Information.

The Palmarejo, Guadalupe and La Patria Silver-Gold epithermal vein deposits occur in south-westernChihuahua state, Mexico. The veins are hosted in a volcano-sedimentary sequence that comprises andesitic to basaltic resedimented volcaniclastic rocks, together with less abundant coherent and pyroclastic facies and minor red-beds. The host sequence is part of the Lower Volcanic Series, and formed in a magmatic arc environment during the Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary Laramide Orogeny. The Lower Volcanic Series is overlain unconformably by an extensive sequence of Miocene rhyolitic ignimbrites, known as the Upper Volcanic Series. At this time, it is uncertain whether epithermal mineralisation was related to andesitic intrusions (85 Ma) and/or Oligocene rhyolitic dykes (25 Ma). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. On the 1 June 1978, the Town and Country Planning Act 1953 was replaced by the revised and more comprehensive Town and Country Planning Act 1977. The new act brings in some substantial changes to the law affecting regional and district planning, and for the first time makes provision for maritime planning. The importance of the Town and Country Planning Act 1977 to the Mineral industry is primarily in the relationship between Regional Planning Schemes and District Schemes as the needs and resources identified in a Regional Planning Scheme will override the underlying District Schemes. The mineral extraction industry must be recognised as a regional responsibility which draws on the resources of a region to satisfy the demand of the communities within that region rather than a purely local operation within one District.

The 6000m long King Headrace Tunnel will be driven through hard Owen Conglomerate in the Eastern third and feldspar porphyry in the Western two thirds, with the anticipated hardness up to 350MPa unconfined compressive strength. Since the Commission had not driven a long, large diameter tunnel for some twenty years, major research was undertaken to assess the current tunnelling trends. Tunnel boring machines were compared with drill and fire equipment. Rail equipment was compared with rubber tyred equipment. Tenders were called with tenderers invited to submit alternatives if desired. Commissioning and production excavation using the equipment is discussed with the final conclusion being that the individual items of equipment purchased combined to make an efficient hard rock drill and blast system capable of progressing through all rock conditions likely to be encountered on the King and Anthony Schemes.

A trial embankment was constructed using coarse coal mine reject on a deposit of crusted coal mine tailings at New Hope Colliery, located in the Bundamba District of the West Moreton Coalfields in South East Queensland, Australia. The purpose of the trial embankment was to assess the load carrying capacity and settlement behaviour of the crusted tailings, including an assessment of strength gain in the tailings under the influence of the fill. Prior to construction of the trial embankment, a site investigation of the tailings deposit was carried out. This comprised vane shear strength testing, together with disturbed sampling and undisturbed block sampling for the purposes of laboratory testing. Following the site investigation, settlement plates and standpipes were installed at various depths and locations within the tailings in the vicinity of the proposed embankment. The instrumentation enabled the magnitudes and distributions of settlement and pore pressure within the tailings to be determined during and following construction of the embankment. The embankment was constructed using coarse reject in three equal lifts to a height of 3.0 m. The tailings sustained a maximum settlement under the weight of the fill of 290 mm, representing about 4.2 ii of the average initial thickness of the tailings and a loss of embankment height of about 9.7 %. The coking coal produced by Utah Development Company in the Bowen Basin is processed by a dual system of dense media cyclones for the 30mm x 0.5mm feed and flotation for 0.5 x 0mm material. The basic metallurgy of these processes will be presented with emphasis on the operational characteristics which are peculiar to coal. Potential areas for process improvement by the application of more sophisticated control systems will also be discussed.

A system of decline mine entries and ore haulages has been designed for the Mt. Windarra mine. This choice was controlled by the nature of the ore- bodies, the mining method chosen and the capital cost of development re- quired for production. Mine entries are being driven 4 metres high and 5.5 metres wide and decline at 11%, to accommodate diesel haulage vehicles of 35 tonnes capacity. The.Mount Windarra haulage system and the design parameters used in its selection and design are discussed, and general design and selection parameters are proposed.

A process control strategy has been developed for the lead circuit of the lead- zinc concentrator at The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC), Broken Hill, Australia. The general aims of the control system were to produce a final concentrate with a zinc content below a certain limit and, at the same time, obtain the highest lead recovery possible. As presently arranged the system involves control of the cleaner feed mass flaw by cleaner diverter tray manipulation and control of xanthate addition based on per cent lead in feed. Generally this approach works well but for abnormal conditions such as very high or law pH the system requires further improvement.

The review covers the different concepts of automation which are appropriate to non-ferrous smelting and the degree to which the smelter, and the furnace in particular, is amenable to total automation. Due to the problems peculiar to a smelter, it is unlikely that a fully closed loop system could ever be achieved and that the smelter will continue to depend upon extended manual control supported by computer based information sorting and optimisation.Generally, loop control is performed using Taylor's Mod III process control system. For distinct plant systems involving a combination of process loops, sequencing, and data acquisition, the company has developed its own microprocessor based systems. Process optimisation using computer based analysis of operating data is well established. Utilising this data, computer modelling provides manual set point supervision for the furnace process control system.The impact of automation on the workforce and on operating costs is also examined. Predictions on future developments in the field of automation, optimisation and sequencing are propounded and related to the non-ferrous industry at large.

Grinding circuits are used in most mineral processing plants. Their widespread application makes the efficient running of the circuits essential to almost all resource projects. This paper will show that, with the application of modern multivariable control techniques, improved plant performance can be obtained when compared with conventional single loop control strategies. Results are presented for a simulated closed-circuit ball mill.The grinding circuit was controlled using the rod-mill water and primary and secondary sump dilution flowrates as the manipulated variables. Variables controlled were the primary cyclone feed flowrate, the primary cyclone feed density and the particle-size measurement (percentage smaller than 75 um).

The Central West of New South Wales is emerging as a significant metallogenic province. The development of Northparkes Mines (North Limited) and the Cadia Hill deposit (Newcrest) are establishing NSW as a highly prospective porphyry copper-gold province. Exploration in the area has been further buoyed by the Ridgeway discovery by Newcrest near Cadia. The fact that the Ridgeway prospect was discovered 300 m below surface under Tertiary basalt cover indicates that surface prospecting can no longer be considered alone as an adequate method to find significant new deposits.

Efficient project planning during the detailed feasibility to final engineering stages of a project requires not only the accurate prediction of the grade, tonnes and recovery, but their degree of variability as well. An understanding of the major parameters involved in the grade and tonnage estimates is essential, and the communication to those receiving the results is most important. The personnel involved in the project require more than just a global reserves classification. Quality parameters other than grade should be evaluated as carefully as the estimate itself. This paper does not present any novel ideas to overcome or enhance any of this. Rather, it takes a step back and tries to look at the global picture of requirements for proper project planning.

The paper presents new developments of the methodology of open pit coal production scheduling optimisation. They deal with the specific features of the exploitation of single coal seam and utilisation of truck-shovel and dragline systems. A production scheduling optimisation model is developed as a linear programming problem. The objective function maximises the net present value of the mining project under the technological constraints for meeting the demand function of the coal processing plant and effective utilisation of the available production equipment. Both principles of mine planning, coal quality optimisation and waste deferment are incorporated in the model. Results of a case study are provided to illustrate the applicability of the optimisation model.

The process of flash smelting of nickel sulphide ores, as practised at the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, is described. The critical variables in the operation of this process are identified. The design of a pilot-scale, turbulent-jet flash reactor which models the essential features of the industrial smelter is described. A report of its operation and application to an investigation of the ignition of particles of sulphide species is given.
