During a period of twelve months between FY18-19, a series of trials were conducted to compare production drilling accuracy using two different methodologies, and the subsequent impact this had on stope performance (dilution and recovery). Testing was conducted at a series of underground mines in Australia. The drill rig’s existing alignment processes were compared to a new technology system, with the following observations: • The new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blasthole deviation, resulting in an increase in the number of holes drilled within tolerance by up to 160%. • The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution significantly by reducing over-break of subgrade ore, whilst also increasing drilled meters (faster stope-cycle time), reducing the bridged tonnes ratio, and facilitating the capture of previously uneconomical stopes. A cost-benefit analysis extrapolated from each of the trials showed the extent to which the new technology, when applied to production data, reduced average dilution, increased ore recovery as well as general drill and blast productivity. In one such trial, the new technology was proven to have reduced average dilution by net 45.4%, which if applied to a full year’s production data, would result in AUD8.2M additional ore recovered, with AUD4.5M less spent on wasted cost of haulage and processing of diluted ore. As a result, return per tonne would increase 22%, from AUD87 to AUD106. This improvement was maintained over the following 12 months – reducing average dilution from 22% in FY17 to 12.1% in FY19.

The value of Australia's education services exports increased to over $15 billion dollars in 2009, placing education as the third overall export earner behind coal and iron ore; however there are concerns over the impact of emerging policies on the future of both the industry and the provision of mining education. Policies have impacts on the growing number of international rankings (or league tables) of mining jurisdictions and universities. A high position in such rankings might be used as a measure of perceived quality with benefit to those at the top and to the detriment to those lower down.    Top performing companies in the relatively new domain of sustainability have been shown to achieve better financial performance than their industry competitors, assisting them in attracting top quality committed staff, hence positioning themselves well for the future. The world's mining companies, jurisdictions and universities are now ranked with results in the public domain. It is argued as to the validity of the data or perceptions used in such rankings, but there is no doubt they are influential in determining the flow of dollars around the globe. By investing your pension fund assets in the shares of the top performing companies, by placing your exploration dollars in a country at the top of such a list of attractive jurisdictions, attending or recruiting from a University at the top of the rankings - risk must surely be reduced?   While savings and risk reduction can undoubtedly result from the introduction of new technologies developed through appropriate R&D (the other core activity of a university), the maintenance of a very high level of exploration and production performance through dedicated highly skilled staff every hour of every day quietly improves financial performance, while avoiding safety, environmental and/or community incidents (ie protects the 'triple bottom line'). As always risk reduction comes down to enabling quality people to do a quality job - through the actions of such people we can sustain the global mining industry and secure our social license to operate. However, there is global concern over where the numbers of such people, including those with the recently required skills in sustainability, are going to come from.   This presentation will discuss some of the complexity and interactions involved in the development of such rankings, the dangers inherent in their simple acceptance and use, plus indicate some of the directions mining educators might take to sustain and increase the supply of quality graduates to the global mining industry. The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017. "In a climate characterised by an ever increasing focus on cost reduction and maximising the utilisation of existing assets and infrastructure, understanding the uncertainty associated with alternative investment and operational choices becomes paramount to minimising the risk of making an ineffective decision. To assist in this process, TSG Consulting has developed an analytic framework to capture the underlying complexity of a mineral supply chain, and then quantify the impact of the uncertainty associated with the key drivers of business productivity. The technical basis of this approach follows three distinct steps: analyse the current system and identify the major factors that drive value build detailed models that can measure the response of the system to potential changes in the factors identified quantify the sensitivity of financial and capacity forecasts to these factors.Each of the above steps draws on a different area from the field of applied analytics, namely: data analytics dynamic modelling and designed experimentation meta-modelling and optimisation.Following the three-step approach described above ensures a rigorous modelling and analysis process is executed to support strategic mine planning decisions. The approach is equally applicable to the analysis of fully integrated system supply chains (pit-to-port), the evaluation of incremental capital investments to targeted areas of a supply chain, or when considering revisions to the operating philosophy of a system in the short term. The basis of each of the three analytic steps is explored in detail in this paper. There is a close relationship between the mining industry, economic growth, and technological and social development. Mining activities benefit all economic agents, but only during a timespan determined by available reserves, primarily driven by internal factors such as production rate, technology and costs, and external factors such as prices determined by the market and taxes and royalties controlled by governments (Gordon and Tilton, 2008; Henckens, 2021; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). The intense use of Mineral Commodities (MC) needed to maintain the current lifestyle has placed ore depletion as one of the main threats to sustainable economic, social and technological development. However, ore depletion does not only arise due to the finite nature of MC, price fluctuations or technological challenges. It is also triggered by the ‘economic limits of extraction’, determined by the optimisation of financial factors and technical restrictions within the regulatory framework (Henckens, 2021). Most reporting standards – if not all – define ore reserves as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resources’ determined by the technical and economic viability of extracting, processing and commercialising MC having the NPV as the fundamental decision – making tool (JORC, 2012; Krzemień et al, 2016). However, is the NVP an ‘economically’ basis index able to capture the complexity of economic phenomena? No, it is not, and it is crucial to define what is economic and financial. Although related, they are different disciplines. Economics studies the behaviour of the different market agents, including human behaviour and policies and explains the factors involved in the scarcity (or surplus) of goods and services. Finance focuses on financial systems and managing funds considering the time, cash available, and risk. It involves banks, loans, investments, and savings and can be considered a small subset of economics (Simon, 1959; Tapia Cortez et al, 2018). Given the economic nature of ore Reserves, endorsed by governments (Figure 1), NPV is an incomplete tool to determine ore Reserves as it limits the problem to simply maximising cash flows instead of optimising the economic benefits for all economic agents. In addition, using the rigid scheme of controlling taxation – unable to adapt to new market or economic conditions and systematically increasing – within the NPV framework only increases the sub-optimisation of ore reserves, mainly due to the systematic taxation rise. Short-term benefits of higher taxes and royalties are unlikely to offset the impacts of reducing exploration and project development in the long-term, which not only boosts ore depletion concerns but also reduces competitiveness, threatening economic and social welfare (Fisher, Cootner and Baily, 1972; Gordon, Bertram and Graedel, 2007; Lilford, 2017; Mardones, Silva and Martínez, 1985; Radetzki, 2009; Rodrik, 1982; Tan, 1987; World Bank, 2000). Holistic methods and collaborative tools, able to dynamically simulate and assess how changes in the technical settings, regulatory framework (taxes and royalties), and financial factors affect the availability of ore reserves and the impact for all economic agents, should be incorporated into the evaluation process to fill the gap.

This paper describes a hybrid ventilation system, which uses secondary fans that also act as de-facto primary fans to extract fresh airflow from the mine intake raise system. Also discussed are the associated problems such as uncontrolled recirculation, inadequate decline airflow, fire safety issues, prolonged blast fume clearance times, high air temperatures in main access routes, neutralisation of mine air cooling by heat from secondary distribution fans, increased ventilation system complexity, reduced flexibility and high pressure differentials (which cause safety issues with personnel access and reduce secondary ventilation system performance).Practical suggestions are provided on options to avoid these problems listed.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2013. In the climate planning of mines and tunnelling with anticipated poor climatic conditions, and especially in case of longer working shifts, the main question is whether it can be reliably prevented that certain climatic limits laid down be exceeded. Working at high temperature and/or humidity can lead to reduced human working energy û a very important economic aspect û and to a risky lack of concentration on the part of the miners or to heat collapse and extremely dangerous heat stroke. With the Deutsche Montan Technologie GmbH (DMT) climate prediction programs, both the dry and the extremely significant humid heat transfer can be calculated. This is due to the high planning reliability involved. With the help of these climate prediction programs it is already possible to determine the anticipated climatic values for the operation phase as early as the planning stage of new ore or coal fields or of tunnel construction projects and to design the optimum air cooling system for every underground project with due regard to technical and economic aspects.

Ventilation on demand (VOD) has been demonstrated to significantly reduce operating costs for ventilation fans, by reducing fan output to meet demand. The most effective method for reducing operating costs is to use variable speed drives to adjust the speed of ventilation fans as required – this achieves significantly larger power savings that damper or vane control alone.However, this mode of control will significantly increase the number of speed cycles the ventilation fans will experience. Fabricated impellers have a limited number of start stop cycles based on the materials and method of construction, and the operating stresses due to centrifugal forces. This means that fans experiencing constant or regular speed changes will experience a reduced fatiguelife compared with fans that are run at constant speed.The fatigue life of fans operated under various speeds using VOD is difficult to predict, as it is dependent on the magnitude of speed changes, and the frequency, which will be varied to meet demand. It is important to be able to estimate remaining fatigue life to assist in maintenance planning and avoid unplanned maintenance activities.This paper will review extensive VOD data on fan operating conditions from two primary mine ventilation fans. This paper will demonstrate how this data can be used to calculate accumulated fatigue and predict the remaining fatigue life, and how this compares with fixed speed or non-VOD controlled fans.The increased maintenance costs for the impellers will also be estimated, and compared to the operating cost savings using VOD, to determine if the savings outweigh the additional maintenance costs.

"The Waihi Gold Mine (WGM) operated by OceanaGold New Zealand Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the OceanaGold Corporation of Australia. Traditionally WGM has stockpiled and processed separate campaigns of open pit and underground ore. The ore is processed via a conventional semi-autonomous grinding (SAG) / ball circuit (SABC). The low aspect SAG mill operates in a closed circuit with two 20" cyclones, whilst the ball mill is also a closed circuit with a 10" cyclone cluster. A major wall movement in April 2015 ceased open pit operations indefinitely, 18 months ahead of the mining plan. This immediately reduced the forecast mill tonnage leaving two options: begin campaign milling or change the operating strategy and target lower throughput. Additional cost pressures necessitated improved milling cost efficiency. The immediate ore restriction limited processing alternatives to within the existing major infrastructure. Available comminution circuit survey data laid the foundation for developing a comminution model using the JKSimMet™ software package (version 6, created by KJTech). A number of flow sheet variants were then evaluated based on predicted throughput and efficiency. The comminution models suggested opportunities for improved efficiency lay in reducing throughput and increasing utilisation rather than on/off campaign milling under the existing operating philosophy. A series of process alterations followed, delivering new cost efficiencies that maintained the current $/t processing cost. The increasing complexity of ore resources and recycled materials in the feed of pyrometallurgical processes present a technical challenge to the metallurgical engineers working on maximising the recovery of the valuable elements and minimising the environmental impact of the processes. To address this challenge, the availability of computational tools that can predict the mass and energy balance in complex systems is required. Then the accurate description of phase equilibria in the complex multicomponent systems describing the chemistry of the pyrometallurgical processes becomes critical for the correct implementation of the indicated tools and facing the outlined industrial challenges. In the present study the distribution of selected elements (Pb, Zn, Fe, As, Sn, Sb, Bi and Ni) between oxide liquid and metal in the ‘CuO0.5’-CaO-AlO1.5 system in equilibrium with Cu metal at 1400°C (liquidus of CaAl2O4) was experimentally studied using the equilibration and quenching technique followed by the electron probe X-ray microanalysis of the resulted samples. The study covered a wide range of effective p(O2) over the system from 10-11 to 10-3.5 (corresponding to formation of immiscible CuO0.5-rich slag). To avoid loss of volatile elements (Pb, Zn, As, Sn, Sb and Bi), a correlation between ‘CuO0.5’ in oxide liquid and p(O2) in open system was obtained first, followed by studying the volatile elements distribution in closed conditions (Al2O3 crucible sealed in SiO2 ampoule), where ‘CuO0.5’ concentration was used as a marker to evaluate the effective p(O2) over the system. The experimental results were then used for the optimisation of the thermodynamic model parameters of the system as part of the integrated experimental and self-consisting thermodynamic modelling research program of phase equilibria in the Cu-Pb-Zn-Fe-Ca-Si-Al-Mg-O-S-(As, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Au, Ni, Cr, Co and Na) gas/oxide liquid/matte/speiss/metal/solids system.

Mining is nothing but an art - besides being a science - of extracting valuable minerals from the womb of the mother earth. In this gigantic task, a large number of machinery and equipment are employed judiciously. Wire ropes play a vital role in lifting or hoisting men and materials under hostile/adverse working conditions and constitute a major item of investment on machinery/equipment. The economy of using a wire rope is a concern for engineers, users and the planners. The economic use of wire ropes for mining purposes largely depends on the following factors;Mechanical design considerations - which include tensile strength of wires, elasticity, resistance to abrasion and crushing, fatigue values, static and dynamic loads on wire ropes, factor of safety, fleet angle, etc. Metallurgical consideration - Composition and heat treatment of wire materials, defects like inclusions and voids, surface quality factor, lubrications, micro structural parameters. Operational consideration - Seizing and cutting of rope, storage, care and maintenance, cutting back, etc. Environmental consideration - Temperature and humidity, pit condition, dust, corrosive atmosphere, etc. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to suggest steps for achieving optimum economy while using the wire ropes for extraction of precious minerals and coal keeping in view the points noted earlier. Once technical viability is established, economy is the ultimate consideration for an industry for safe hoisting of men and material.

This paper has been developed for æThe Race for SpaceÆ conference. It ranges over various aspects, all of which are within the umbrella of marketing. The question is posed because many engineers, tunnelling and other specialisations, frequently demonstrate an unwillingness to embrace marketing. Continuous development of complex new steel grades to meet the ever-increasing demand of high performance causes recurrent issues in steel continuous casting such as surface quality defects (eg cracks, depressions, deep oscillation marks) and productivity challenges (eg faster casting, near-net shape casting). Continuous casting of steel is a highly successful metallurgical process. Much of this success can be attributed to the performance of the casting powder that is added to the top of the mould, creates a liquid slag pool as it is heated, and forms a slag film between the watercooled copper mould and steel shell during its passage down the mould. Mould powder selection is a compromise between the conflicting requirements of heat transfer and lubrication. In an EU RFCS (Research Fund for Coal and Steel)-funded project, various techniques are developed to offer the opportunity to adapt the slag film to meet the conflicting needs in different parts of the mould such that mild cooling can be generated in the meniscus, mid-broad face or corner areas whilst maintaining lubrication and offering higher cooling rates in other areas of mould. This has significant potential to address the industrial issues in product quality and productivity of continuous casting. This paper reports, as part of the EU RFCS project, the determination of crystallinity and porosity in slag films for casting challenging and innovative steel grades using new methods. In comparison with the methods such as X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis and optical microscopy / scanning electron microscopy (OM/SEM) analysis that are currently adopted by the industries, EBSD (electron backscatter diffraction) has been employed to determine the crystallinity of the slag films taken from industry casters. X-ray computed tomography (XCT) plus 3D image reconstruction has been used to determine the slag film % porosity with pore volume, pore size distribution, and pore location, which can be linked with the performance of the slag films during casting different steel grades.

The transition of mechanical cooling refrigerants from their inception in the 1800s through to the current day has been driven by several factors. Original refrigerants such as sulfur and carbon dioxide, chloromethane and ammonia, whilst effective came with toxicity and/or flammability issues. In 1930 DuPont trademarked a new synthetic refrigerant known as Freon® 12, this development was the introduction of ‘chlorofluorocarbons’ (CFCs).Throughout the 1930s and 1940s additional synthetic refrigerants were developed, namely Freon® 11 and Freon® 22. Due to their non-toxic and non-flammable characteristics, synthetic refrigerants were extensively used for domestic, commercial and industrial applications for the next 60 years.In 1985, one of the first scientific papers suggested a potential mechanism linking CFCs and areduction in the density of the ozone layer. In 1987 the Montreal protocol is ratified; it is the first UN treaty to be ratified by every country on earth. Due to CFC’s ozone depletion potential (ODP), the treaty required the consumption of CFC’s to be reduced by 50 per cent over the next ten years. By 1996 the phase out of CFC’s (Freon® 12) is completed, the phase out of HCFC (Freon® 22) refrigerants comes into effect.On 1 January 2018 the phase down of HFC’s begins. Whilst having zero impact on the ozone layer HFC refrigerants have high global warming potential (GWP). As we transition through the HFC phase down (2018–2035) we are beginning to see the emergence of what some consider to be the fourth synthetic wave, hydrofluoro-olefins (HFO’s). HFO’s and their blends have zero ODP and low GWP’s, ranging from 150 to less than 1. The reduction in GWP with HFO’s typically comes at the expense of flammability, which is not ideal. Each refrigerant has its optimal application, therefor when considering refrigerant choices for mining systems, a complete assessment of the environmental, health and safety, efficiency and commercial impacts should be considered now more than ever.

The Clem Jones Tunnel (formally known as the North-South Bypass Tunnel), a A$2.88 billion road tunnel project in Brisbane, Queensland, was successfully completed almost seven months ahead of schedule. The project included two parallel 4.7 km long road tunnels, 740 m of intermediate roadway access ramps and two auxiliary ventilation tunnels. The tunnels incorporate intelligent tunnel systems, best practice fire and life safety standards and typical civil tunnel elements.Over the duration of the project the Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and AECOM (formally Maunsell) design joint venture (MPB) were Lead Designers to the Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Bilfinger Berger Joint Venture (LBBJV). Construction of the toll road commenced in September 2006 and was completed in March 2010, with the tunnel opening then. Contributing to the success of this project was the continued support the lead designers gave throughout the construction period.This paper will focus on some of the structural elements that contributed to the success of the project – in particular the cable tunnel structure, a small precast, culvert shaped element under the pavement of the mainline tunnel, and the fit-out of the Gibbon Street shaft which were designed to be constructed in a combination of precast and in situ concrete.The cable tunnel was incorporated early in the design phase and runs the length of much of the tunnel. This paper will outline the challenges faced by the designers with implementing this system which provided significant construction advantages, among which were being able to install a separate ventilation duct during construction and to start fitting out the mechanical and electrical conduits and drainage system while tunnelling was still underway.The Gibbon Street shaft had a length and width of 20 m by 40 m and an overall depth of 38 m. A 20 m high structure of precast and in situ concrete was constructed in the base to accommodate mechanical and electrical equipment and provide a take-off access for the southern ventilation tunnel. The construction purpose for this structure was to provide a junction between the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and the roadheader-style tunnels, a staging platform for commencing the roadheader tunnelling, and a platform where the TBMs could be dismantled and removed.The design was assessed and reviewed many times throughout the construction process to address the needs of each of these stages. Innovative use of precast concrete was used to minimise construction time.Additionally, the designers provided support to the construction team from the time of design completion through to the tunnel opening. This meant that the changes to the design and adjustment of construction loadings could also be assessed. The fi nal outcome resulted in an efficient construction sequence and a project that has provided an excellent outcome for the client, stakeholders and community.

By 2025, with the widespread industry adoption of remote operation centres and advanced analytics, mining companies will find themselves making better, more informed decisions across the value chain. Process automation will drive significant business integration and reorganisation. Better collaboration between functions will make cross value chain optimisation a reality. Wherever possible decisions will be automated, based on analytical models and embedded in an enterprise decision management (EDM) architecture. This will take care of many of the minor day-to-day or the minute-to-minute decisions that consume operators and managers today. More flexible information technologies and architectures derived from the extensions to Web 2.0 and service oriented architecture (SOA) will solve many of the integration issues of today. The ongoing business imperatives for doing more with less people will make true collaboration with partners such as mining contractors, equipment vendors, transport providers, suppliers and maintenance contractors commonplace throughout the industry. All these organisations will be linked in and share common goals and objectives in real-time while providing visibility of internal constraints and available capability, allowing optimised decisions to be made across the extended enterprise. Humans will increasingly move to a more supervisory role and will use advanced collaboration to quickly solve complex abnormal issues that span the value chain out to the extended enterprise. The open collaboration and communication models instilled in the workforce through the widespread use of social networking technologies will drive thought leadership far beyond current æbest practiceÆ thinking. This will encourage the mining industry to extract the business value from rapidly converging fields of study such as environmental sciences, neuroscience, psychology, engineering, information technology and business finance. The future of mining will see a more uniform distribution of data savvy workers between the ages of 20 - 40, forcing a change in current operations. This group will drive the adoption of ubiquitous computing, augmented reality, presence and digital labelling. The enterprise will shift from a relatively static disparate set of functions to a digitally aware, integrated and interactive environment with information available, in context and just in time, to those who need it. The networked virtual enterprise will therefore be a reality.

The adoption of new technologies is accompanied by risks that the stakeholders will wish to understand and minimise. The process of developing a dynamic simulation and the plant it will be used in provides a discipline and attention to detail that highlights and provides an opportunity to mitigate risks that will exist in a production environment. The simulations will enable investigation of what the outcome of process failures will be and the impact maintenance. Enumerating this information will enable designs to be optimised and operating and control strategies to be tested.The success of new technology is dependent on the operators and their understanding of it and the machines that use it. In this context dynamic simulations can provide training and experience without risk to personnel, equipment or production. This experience will include situations that would not be induced in a production plant for training purposes. This paper outlines a generic template for a dynamic simulation that can be used to evaluate the introduction of an emerging technology into an operating environment. It includes process flows and surge capacity, breakdown and maintenance, operator interactions and availability, push and pull production scheduling and system control.

Since the early days of flotation, process technicians have known that the speed at which the froth is recovered over the lip of the cell has a very direct and consistent influence on the grade and recovery of the circuit. No plant would deny that, even to this day, one of the most important aspects of a process technicianÆs job is ensuring that the froth is moving at a desired and controlled speed over the lip. Unfortunately, process technicians cannot watch the froth throughout the entire shift, as there are always other problems to attend to. A considerable amount of work has thus been done to develop a æsystemÆ that automatically measures the speed of the froth. This measurement would then be used in simple controllers to emulate the steps taken by the process technician in correcting deviations of the froth speed from its desired level. Many of the earlier attempts to measure speed were ineffective, as they were unable to cope with turbulence on the froth surface. The FrothMasterÖ instrument makes use of machine vision technologies to measure the speed of the froth over the lip of a cell at a very high sampling rate. This instrument produces an extremely reliable and accurate measurement of the froth speed (as well as other parameters such as bubble size and froth stability). As we will show, the effectiveness of the speed measurement in controlling the performance of the plant is a testimony to its reliability. Three FrothMasterÖ units have recently been installed on the Cadia Hills Gold Mine in New South Wales (Australia). The objectives of this installation were:to control the mass-recovery of two Tank Cells in series on the same level where differences in the hydrostatic head between the two cells result in the cells pulling inconsistently with respect to each other; control of the concentrate grade (per cent copper) from the first rougher; reduction in the frother consumption in the rougher circuit by monitoring the froth speed. A simple controller was designed to react to disturbances in the same way that human operators react. This was done after consultation with the metallurgists and the process technicians at Cadia. The controller had two functions: Stabilisation: The stabilising controller made use of three manipulated variables (level, frother addition rate and aeration rate) to control the froth speed to a setpoint. Optimisation: The optimising controller adjusted the froth speed setpoint based on deviations of the grade (measured in real-time by the OSA) from a setpoint. The plant metallurgist adjusted the grade setpoint based on information about the ore. The results from a 21-day trial have shown the following:The ratio of concentrate mass-recovery between two cells in series on the same level has been successfully balanced, thereby overcoming problems due to differences in hydrostatic heads. It is possible to control the speed of the froth, in mm/s, to within five per cent of its setpoint using the aforementioned manipulated variables. It has also been shown that, for reliable control, it is necessary to control more than just one variable (eg level or air). The grade of the first rougher concentrate has been controlled to within 0.3 per cent of the grade setpoint for long periods of time, which has important implications for the circuit recovery. The frother consumption has been reduced significantly. This paper will thus show that substantial progress has been made to demonstrate the value of using on-line froth speed measurements in flotation plant control to obtain real financial benefits.

Consultants in the mining industry have the opportunity to visit interesting deposits all over the world. Each deposit has its own set of challenges to face when it comes to defining and understanding the deposit geology and the economics to make it viable for extraction. Some of the challenges can include appropriate data capture, sampling techniques, structural characteristics, geochemistry, geophysics, lithology definition, and economic boundaries. It is essential that the practices used at each deposit (eg drilling, sampling, geological modelling, resource estimation etc) are documented and the results obtained are robust and defensible. The Competent Person is not always aware of instances where their resource estimation practices have not been substantiated. ‘You don’t know what you don’t know’ is a phrase frequently used during a mineral resource audit. Technical work to substantiate drilling, sampling, density, assaying, geological modelling and estimation processes is not always completed. Audited Competent Persons often comment: • ‘I was unaware that this was required.’ • ‘I have not had training in this area and do not know how to complete the checks required.’ • ‘This is how we’ve always done it.’ Examples of audits where it was found that geological practices were not substantiated are examined here. A discussion is included on why substantiation of these practices is important, and potential reasons as to why there are instances of unsubstantiated processes and practices are discussed.

There have been enormous changes in mineral processing in the past four decades. For example grinding mill power has increased by an order of magnitude, regrinding is done to -10 microns and flotation machines are 100 times bigger. Operating staff have unprecedented opportunities for online monitoring and performance control of mineral processing plants. Sophisticated instruments can provide a plethora of data characterising the mineralogy and surfaces of particles. Digital computers allow complex calculations on huge amounts of data including modelling and simulation of machine and plant performance. However, all these changes have not necessarily lead to better metallurgical results. An analogy can be drawn with the thoroughbred racing industry in Australia. Significant advances in scientific knowledge in animal genetics, physiology, biomechanics and nutrition applied to the business have resulted in only a two per cent reduction in winning times for the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup since the 1920s. A critical look at some mineral processing metrics suggests similar failures to improve performance despite putting in more resources. In fact certain parameters such as operating times and plant start-up performance are considered to have remained static or even deteriorated. There has been an emphasis on 'process' at the expense of 'outcomes'. The industry's strength has been in finding technical (or 'hardware') solutions while its weakness has been at the people end of the business in maximising and consolidating the gains from the technologies. Some trends in plant design over these years have exacerbated the apparent deskilling of operating and technical staff. Despite unparalleled options for communications, some staff are embarrassingly uninformed about technical developments in their fields. The 'boom and bust' cycles of the industry, together with trends in tertiary education and the effects of fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operations, raise serious questions about the sustainability of human capital in the mineral processing sector. This paper by two experienced mineral processing engineers, with contributions from other senior practitioners, reviews these trends. While there may be an element of 'the older we are, the better we were', it is an attempt to identify the issues and propose solutions.
