Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred in Australia in the Sydney Coal Basin since 1895 and in the Bowen Coal Basin since 1954. The largest has been about 500 tonnes of coal and so their magnitude and character have not approached those experienced in some other countries. The occurrence of CO2 with some Australian cases provides some similarity with the worst affected areas in France and Poland.The proneness of seams depends on coal rank and seam gas composition, among other factors. The proneness of places depends on depth, structure, intrusion, tectonism and other factors affecting the geometric, physical and chemical uniformity as well as details of mining. As a phenomenon due to gas and stress, prevention can be achieved by relief of high gas and/or stress condition. Alternatively, controls can be applied to render mining safe for personnel. Unfortunately day-to-day prediction is not widely and reliably achieved to allow selective use of prevention or control. The initial rate of desorption is the most promising day-to-day indicator.Various researches include gas conditions and parameters, stress and failure conditions and parameters, coal variables and geological variables in relation to prediction, prevention and control. Some assistance in research may derive from study of analogous phenomena of instantaneous outbursts of salt and other rocks and gas. It is concluded that in the Sydney and Bowen Basins, any coals with less than 30 per cent Volatile Matter (VM) ash free dry (afd) at depths over 200 m could be prone. Proneness increases with depth, with lower volatile content, with geological disturbance including faulting, intrusion and recent tectonics, with increased CO2 in seam gas, with narrow work and with other factors. Much more research is needed.Unfortunately outbursts are needed too, to provide the research with realistic data. With the problems of mechanism and prediction still being unsolved much research remains to be done. No present aspect of research is satisfactorily resolved.

The occurrence and deportment of manganese in a number of ferromanganese and Mn-bearing iron ore samples from supergene-upgraded deposits, as well as from magnetite banded iron formation (BIF) and magnetite skarn deposits, was characterised in order to provide a basis for improved understanding of the processing characteristics of different ore types and investigate the potential for development of a robust geometallurgical classification for Mn-oxide ores. An understanding of the Mn mineralogy in mixed Fe-Mn deposits is necessary to inform any attempt to separate the Fe and Mn during beneficiation and to understand and predict the behaviour of lump and fine ore products during processing.A suite of analytical techniques was utilised, including hand sorting of lump ore particles, optical microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF)/inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) chemistry, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and gas and solid phase pycnometry, in order to elucidate manganese mineralogy, mineral chemistry and mineral textures. Manganomelane group minerals (eg cryptomelane, hollandite), pyrolusite and lithiophorite were the most common manganese oxides in the samples examined. From the microprobe work, there was evidence of probable substitution of Mn, as well as Al and Si, into the structures of goethite and hematite. Manganomelane minerals were often intimately associated with goethite, in particular, and a clarification of this association and the associated Si and Al impurities is fundamental for improved understanding of beneficiation and sintering behaviour of Mn-oxide ores. Due to the poor or very fine crystallinity of some supergene manganese deposits and of some Mn oxide minerals, in particular the extent of overlapping peaks and their variable mineral chemistry, XRD was a problematic technique to equivocally determine Mn mineralogy.For lower-grade, earthy, poorly microcrystalline ores the mineralogical and textural association between mixed Mn, Fe and Al (¦ Si) phases was also critical. The deportment and potential separation of these elements in these deposits, especially Al, was complex, as they were characterised by forms of æhydrousÆ cryptomelane with higher levels of Fe-Al-Si substitution, as well as intimate intergrowths of ochreous-earthy goethite (probably aluminous in part) with cryptomelane, lithiophorite and/or kaolinite.Trace amounts of alkali elements in ferromanganese deposits were considered likely to be preferentially structurally associated with Mn oxides, while lateritic deposits with significant amounts of lithiophorite could contain elevated levels of deleterious impurities; Co and Ni in particular.A combination of solid and gas phase pycnometry proved to be a useful technique for broadly discriminating hematitic, goethitic and mixed Mn oxide-goethite lump particles based upon differences in their envelope and apparent densities. Based upon these preliminary results and ongoing Raman spectroscopy work on manganese deposits sensu stricto, Raman spectroscopy is a technique considered to have promise during targeted research to better link the optical and compositional properties of ferromanganese ore particles. The Hidden Valley Gold Project is located in a remote and mountainous area of the Morobe Province approximately 30 km south of the township of Bulolo and approximately 90 km south-southwest of the provincial capital, Lae. The Hidden Valley deposit was discovered in 1984 with the nearby Hamata and Kaveroi deposits discovered in 1987 and 1992 respectively. Reserves (Harmony, 2009) at these three deposits are 42.1 million tonnes of ore containing approximately 2.9 million ounces of gold and 45 million ounces of silver. A further 5.4 million ounces of gold and 84 million ounces of silver are in the resources category. The process plant is designed to treat 4.2 million tonnes per year of gold/silver ore extracted by open cut mining methods. Ore is classified into three ore types according to oxidation state: oxide, transition and primary. The silver to gold grade ratio is high for the Hidden Valley and Kaveroi ores, generally in the range 15 - 20:1, and much lower for Hamata, typically 1 - 2:1: Primary ore is the dominant ore type at Hidden Valley with sulfur grades up to about two per cent sulfur. Oxide and transition ores are more prevalent at the Hamata deposit, but its primary ore has up to five per cent sulfur grades. Variable ore types, particularly in the initial years of operation, high silver to gold ratios and limited plant site area, due to the challenging terrain, present the main processing challenges for this project. This paper describes the operating strategies and process development for the main areas of this circuit, highlighting selections of processes and equipment that achieve cost effective, yet flexible solutions to the treatment of ores from these deposits.

With the recent rapid development of Chinese steel industry, the world iron ore resources of good quality are depleting rapidly. As a result, iron ore deposits of lower quality have been or are being developed to meet the market demand and are becoming increasingly important to iron and steel companies. As concentrates have advantages of high Fe grade and less harmful impurities, they are ideal sweeteners to maintain sinter grade and quality when high proportions of low-grade ores are used in the sinter blends. However, due to their fine nature, addition of concentrates will inevitably increase the proportion of adhering fines and reduced the proportion of nucleus particles of the sinter blends, which can adversely affect the green bed permeability and sintering productivity. In the present study, lab scale sintering tests were carried out under the conditions similar to the sintering process to examine the effect of concentrates on the high temperature sintering characteristics of sinter blends and the structure and strength of the resultant sinter analogues.

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals frum points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments shaved that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 ¦m had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slav floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one thiro of the lead losses in the final tails. All sizes of zinc values between 150 mesh and 7 ¦m floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the -7 ¦m fraction. The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. Mining is experiencing a difficult period of low profitability and declining productivity. To achieve sustainability, mining companies are challenged with improving output, quality and safety while decreasing costs. At the same time, organisations are having to manage a workforce in which individuals no longer accept a traditional style of management, employees prefer more flexible employment, and diversity within teams is becoming the expected norm.Increasing organisational diversity has been shown to have a positive impact on performance and therefore sustainability. Gender diversity and equality between working men and women is the area most studied in this regard. Executives are becoming more aware of the correlation between gender diversity and performance with some larger organisations having dedicated resources to increase the number and status of women in their organisations. Despite this, limited improvement in gender equality is apparent globally over the last decade with some industries, including mining, going backwards. So why is this the case and what other strategies are available?In 2015, the United Nations Women National Committee Australia (UN Women NCA) in conjunction with Autopia released a white paper discussing the lack of visible change in gender equality despite the widespread implementation of merit-based personnel management strategies. Using research from around the world and thoughts from influential government, education and business leaders, the paper ‘Rethinking Merit’ debunks the myth of the meritocracy. It provides a number of recommendations for organisations committed to improving their performance and sustainability through diversity, including a variety of real-life company examples, instead of relying solely on merit-based decision-making.This paper takes the recommendations of ‘Rethinking Merit’ and applies them to the mining industry. It shows the relevance that rethinking merit has for the industry and why applying the recommendations can result in an increase in diversity, therefore enabling greater performance and sustainability of mining companies. While a per onnel location system is primarily used to check that nobody is left in the mine at firing time, it is also useful for contacting people, uch a foremen, shiftbosses and tradesmen, who travel over several mine levels during a shift. The system installed at The Zinc Corporation, Limited, Broken Hill, uses punched coded plastic identity tags, with "In" and "Out" tag readers on each level. When entering a level, the employee inserts his tag in the "In" reader, and when leaving, in the "Out" reader. Each reader is connected to a central computer which shows who is still in the mine and their location.The system has been used on 3 levels by 21 men for a trial period of 4 months. It ha proved reliable in an underground mining environment, and employee acceptance has been good.

The worldwide association of low-sulfidation epithermal gold mineralisation, bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism and rifting is confirmed in New Zealand. In the currently productive Coromandel epithermal-gold province reported Ar-Ar dating of adularia from low sulfidation deposits falls into two groups at 6 and 7 Ma. Bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism has been reported to be K-Ar dated at 9 to 7 Ma and 6 to 5.5 Ma. Epithermal gold mineralisation in Northland is spatially associated with bimodal basaltic-rhyolitic volcanism, with rifting cogenetic with that in the CVZ. The Taupo Volcanic zone (TVZ) is sufficiently young that the presence of a segmented rift with recent bimodal rhyolitic-basaltic volcanism can be genetically associated with epithermal gold mineralisation, which occurs as both fossil occurrences and in active geothermal fields. This reinforces the known potential prospectiveness of the Coromandel area and increases that of Northland and the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

The San Cristobal gold district is located 110 km east of the port of Antofagasta, Chile. It contains the San Cristobal gold mine, where Niugini Mining Ltd. commenced a heap leach operation, with initial reserves of 10.1 million tonnes grading 1.34 g/t An, in December, 1990. The San Cristobal district occurs within an upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary magmatic arc. The main mineralisation occurs within a northwest trending subvertical zone, 1km long and 70-100 m wide, which contains rhyolite porphyry and minor breccia, and is locally termed the "subvolcanic complex". At the San Cristobal mine, most gold mineralisation occurs in subvertical quartz-pyrite veins which were emplaced in dilational sections of an imbricate fault system. The bulk gold resource comprises four ore shoots which formed where the vein system intersects the subvolcanic complex. Gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins also occur at separate prospects, the Three Sisters and Sol prospects, west and south of the San Cristobal mine. Hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic and propylitic assemblages related to intrusion of the subvolcanic complex. This alteration is overprinted by a phyllic stage which is associated with the emplacement of the quartz-pyrite veins. The oxide zone is 180 m thick, and contains native gold, electrum, limonite, and manganocarbonates. The underlying hypogene zone contains pyrite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, bornite, chalcocite, and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit formed at approximately 270¦ C, and the mean salinity of the fluid was 4% NaCl equivalent. These observations enable the San Cristobal deposit to be classed as a porphyry-related, mesothermal quartz-vein system of the low sulphidation type.

Aurum Reef Resources is a provincially owned unlisted public company which holds a number of prospecting licences over Otago hard rock historically active minesites. The Bullendale Licence 31 1845 was applied for in 1985, granted 1991, including a DoC special condition allowing re-opening of the historic workings. The underground workings were commenced in 1862 and up to the mine's closure in 1906 some 40 000 ounces were produced at an average grade of 15.5 g Au/t. The purpose of the summer 1991 work programme was to enter the workings in an attempt to observe and sample the mullock between the lodes operated by the early miners. This objective was achieved on the third attempt. Samples were taken and subsequently a contract geologist resampled the workings and prepared a report indicating the Bullendale lode zone to be generally mineralised. Mullock interlode and schist foot-wall consistently returned assays over 0.5 g/t.

Traditionally, stratigraphic deposits have been represented by a large number of gridded surface and product analytical models, related to each other by naming convention. This approach, though suitable for structurally simple stratigraphic deposits, does not lend itself well to addressing the complex style of stratigraphic deposits which are becoming more prevalent. In addition, the sheer number of individual gridded models involved makes it very difficult to keep a consistent audit trail of the overall deposit model. Recently, a new enhanced block model structure known as Horizon Adaptive Rectangular Prism (HARP) models was introduced to address these issues. An HARP model is specifically designed to allow stratigraphic units to be represented with virtually no loss of structural integrity, by allowing the tops and bases of the individual HARP blocks to ‘bend’ in concert with the input surfaces. By bringing together the best of grid modelling, triangulation modelling, block modelling and grade estimation, the HARP model opens up many exciting new opportunities for the stratigraphic geologist or engineer to take their model further than was previously possible. Examples of improvements in modelling methodology using a HARP model include: the ability to represent complex normal, reverse and thrust faulting; the ability to store thousands of additional analytical, geotechnical or calculated variables in each individual block; advanced visualisation, manipulation and plotting capabilities; and the ability to calculate volumes and resources against complex, three-dimensional (3D) solid pit designs. Finally, several ‘real world’ scenarios, illustrating how this advancement in modelling technology can benefit a wide range of mining professionals are detailed. These examples demonstrate how productivity gains can be made in both long-term resource modelling and short-term ‘week by week’ geological modelling as an adjunct to mine planning.

This paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Ltd.The North Mine orebodies occur in knots of minor folds on a simple limb structure which is itself highly folded, giving rise to two distinct orebodies pitching N. at av. 42° down to 2,920-ft. level, where the pitch steepens to near vertical as a result of complementary shear movement on the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.The lack of adequate marker beds and top and bottom relations makes the resolving of the complex structural environment of the orebodies most difficult.To test the deeper ground of each side of the De Bavay Fault on the 2,600-ft. level the footwall drive was extended 3,556 feet and over 20,000 ft. of drilling completed from three transverse fans, only one of which intersected the orebodies due to steepening of pitch.The problem of locating the North Mine orebodies N. of the DeBavay Fault remains speculative because the exact position of them S. of the fault is still unknown. Exploration beyond the fault in the search for ore had two lines of mineralization to consider, an eastern one through Cosgroves-Round Hill, long regarded as the continuation of the main lode, and a western one passing through Silver Hill Silver Peak.From surface 45,000 ft. of drilling was completed in five sections, establishing that the structure was dominantly synclinal with a flatdipping E. limb, the W. limb and adjoining structures being involved in the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone. Mineralization, though weak, was remarkably persistent but the economic mineralization exposed at surface has not persisted with any continuity.Deep exploratory drilling below the bottom level (3,370 ft.) has established high-grade ore to a depth of 4,095 ft. and also has proved its existence within the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Limited from the inception of the Geological Department in 1941 until the end of 1955. The writer has drawn freely on departmental records for the period prior to 1947.

The ERMS Process was developed during four years of testwork by Austpac Gold NL to overcome the severe metallurgical problems of the ilmenite atWestport, in the South Island. These deposits have been known for about one hundred years. They were originally mined for gold, and only later attracted attention as a possible source of titanium minerals.   The resource is of world scale and may exceed 20 million tonnes of contained ilmenite. Similar deposits occur at Barrytown further south and together these areas would constitute an important opportunity for export-oriented mineral development, if a viable beneficiation technology were available. Further processing is essential, as the composition of the ilmenite is well below market specifications.

Building the Unified Comminution Model The Unified Comminution Model (UCM) was formulated with the vision of bringing all comminution models onto a common base. The structure of the model relies on knowledge of the mechanical environment in the comminution devices to predict the modes and rates of collision in a device. A detailed understanding of the breakage modes and an ability to correctly test these modes for the ores in question is then required to feed into the UCM. A model structure has been developed that has the capability of dealing with multiple modes of breakage, such as low energy impact surface damage, chipping, sliding abrasion, cumulative impact body breakage and the transition of rock between modes. A critical review is presented on the shortcomings and limitations of utilising the discrete element method (DEM) to provide the mechanical environments. The assumptions and applicability of utilising DEM in milling models are presented and proposed routes to building a realistic mechanistic model are proposed. Based on this more realistic measures of collision energy have been derived from the DEM simulations, which better mimic the real breakage tests. Generic forms of the collision energy distributions have been observed and developed into functional forms for use in the simulation environment. The method of application of this model to a pilot SAG mill is presented.

In responding to why some longwall roadway development rates are different among mines, the Roadway Development Task Group (RDTG) of Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has initiated a benchmarking study to survey each longwall mine to determine the correlation between roadway development practices and roadway development performances. This paper describes a web-based relational database system which has been developed purposely to monitor the performance of Australian longwall roadway developments aimed at assessing both the physical and operational factors which could influence roadway development practices and their performance indicators. Statistical analysis of an earlier survey suggested that continuous miner units that achieved more than 1750 m were units mining two-heading development.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Mae Moh coal mine is an open-cut coal mine in Thailand that produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually to generate 2400 MW of electricity. The surface mine pit covers is 4 km by 7 km with mining depths ranging up to 260 m. A large pit slope is formed with the progression of the mining operation. However, massive slides in the pit slope occur often due to the existence weak planes such as faults and bedding, and the weak mechanical properties of the rocks. Hence, 200 m to 300 m boundaries of rock block including coal seams are left in front of faults in order to prevent slides and maintain the stability of the pit slope. As a result, there are significant coal reserves beneath the abandoned area along the pit slope. Moreover, the mined coal seams are very thick and their thickness range from 15 to 30 m.This paper discusses the application of multi-slicing highwall mining system with stowing to this very thick coal seam left around large pit slopes by means of numerical analysis.

Calcination of samples from the Savage River region of Thsmania containing varying magnesite/dolomite ratios under conditions optimized for the magnesite component, followed by carbonic acid leaching at elevated pressures, leads to leachates of varying composition. For a 3 per cent solids slurry leached at 15.5°C and 700 k Pa carbon dioxide, the leachates have magnesium concentrations in the range 0.71 - 13.2 g/litre. The corresponding magnesium extraction data are 12.5 - 86.4 per cent. The variation in leachate composition would be unacceptable in terms of continuous processing, so that a feed of "constant" composition is essential. Selective mining and physical beneficiation to remove the bulk of the dolomite do not appear to be practical. It is concluded that the most appropriate method of feed preparation is to carry out extensive blending of the magnesite/dolomite ore and the resultant calcine.

Low tonnage quartz vein-hosted stibnite lodes are widely distributed in rocks of the Tasman Fold Belt System in eastern Queensland, with particular concentrations in the Hodgkinson - Broken River Fold Belt and to a lesser extent in the Gympie Province of the New England Fold Belt: Higher grade deposits have been worked intermittently on a small scale since 1873, resulting in the production of about 5500 tonnes of antimony ore/concentrate with an estimated grade of about 55% Sb. Future production of antimony may be as a by-product from deposits, currently being explored/mined for gold in the Hodgkinson/Mitchell River area and the Amanda Bel goldfield. Establishment of an antimony processing plant in Queensland using the Quelar Process would provide a more reliable market for small producers and could stimulate future exploration and production.
