The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. Leading Article from "British Medical Journal," London, 4th, November, 1944.Assuming that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid, Denny, Robson, and Irwin thought that if the solubility of siliceous material retained in the lungs could be suffciently reduced the usual fibrotic response could be diminished or prevented. They discovered that aluminum powder rendered siliceous material insoluble in vitro by coating the silica particle with a thin film of gelatinous hydrated alumina, which on drying formed crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate. The presence of this adsorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was shown by staining it with aurin. That metallic aluminum dust produced no fibrosis in the lungs was demonstrated by dust-inhalation experiments on eight rabbits. Attempts were therefore made to prevent silicosis by mixing quartz with metallic aluminum dust.Animals exposed to quartz dust developed typical silicosis in about five months, but the addition of 1 per cent. aluminum powder prevented this even after exposure had been lengthened up to 22 months, provided the aluminum powder was of a particle size below 5. This year Crombie, Blaisdell and MacPherson have reported the treatment of 34 silicotic miners by the daily inhalation of fine aluminum powder freshly ground from small aluminum pellets in a specially constructed mill. Daily treatment began with five-minute inhalations, which were gradually increased to 30 minutes. Some of the men received 300 treatments, but the majority only 200. Out of the 34 cases thus treated clinical improvement was manifested by lessening or disappearance of shortness of breath, of cough, of pain in the chest, and of fatigue. In 15 cases the condition became stationary and remained so in spite of continuous employment in silica dust throughout the treatment. The progress of the disease was assessed by means of tests for respiratory function repeated at three-monthly intervals. Obviously this treatment cannot be regarded as a cure for silicosis, since it cannot restore lung tissue which has undergone fibrotic change; but Crombie and his colleagues believe that the inhalation of finely particulate aluminum powder offers every prospect of preventing the development of human silicosis.In view of these findings, it is surprising that repeated papers by Goralewski from Germany describe various types of lung disease attributed to aluminum dust, and press for them to be scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act in that country. Seven hundred workers were investigated. They were making, probably by a stamping process, aluminium powder containing about four milliards of particles of dust per grain, and are reported as complaining of dry cough with pain on breathing, shortness of breath, poor appetite, and gnawing abdominal pain. Mine planning is difficult. Even for small operations, it involves reasoning with complex variables and the practical difficulties of mining. It is also about predicting and planning the future in an unpredictable physical and economic environment. Yet we rely on a handful of individuals and their spreadsheets to tell us how to do it û planning the business and activities of mining to hopefully produce results that will please stakeholders. Does it work? Not as well as it could. Planning affects everyone in the organisation. Company executives are demanding more reliability and stability in cost and revenue forecasts from their operations. Management want to explore ways of being more cost effective. Miners and contractors want more useful plans and realistic targets. And the planners have to describe the method that will translate business objectives into implementable plans. Even with the use of computer technology a lot of effort is expended to produce plans that are largely qualified by the level of knowledge and experience of individuals. Better use of information and the application of Intelligent Technologies can improve the quality and reliability of mine plans and schedules. By capturing the knowledge within the organisation and speeding up the planning process, Intelligent Technologies allow more options to be considered more rigorously. But it is not just about technology. It is about how technology is implemented and embodied in the way the business is managed for performance. When this happens, the real benefits of better planning start to flow.

The mining industry is generally regarded as a high risk industry, mainly because of the difficulties in estimating the tonnage and grade of mineral resources, the fluctuations in metal prices, mining problems and other problems which occur with mining in offshore and remote locations, such as appropriation or disruption to supply. As a consequence, finance providers require a high reward from mining projects. In the past two decades, the development of "mega" projects has led to the packaging of the finance becoming more sophisticated. Some would see this move as a measure of the evolution of banking rather than an intrinsic facet of mining finance itself. Project financial managers now require a thorough knowledge of all the financial tools which are available and have to be aware of the funding options so that they can put together a finance package which minimises the cost of the financing with the risk spread adequately between the partners of the financing. The different sources and types of finance for mining projects are described herein along with the factors which determine their costs. To understand the ramifications of financing mining projects, it is essential to appreciate the fundamental difference between debt and equity, which illustrates the importance of gearing. Costs of finance are determined by the interaction of supply and demand forces. Bankers and other financiers have become more adept at isolating a wide selection of risk elements and have devised a formidable range of insurance mechanisms. There is still a lot of money looking for good project risks and if a good project is properly presented and structured, financing can be obtained in today's market.

THIS tunnel, which is an adit 7000 ft. long, was undertaken by the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company Limited to connect its treatment works with the North Lyell mine at depth, with a view to effecting economies in transport and drainage. The work was carried out at high pressure throughout from both ends, and although the ground in the mine end was intensely hard, good progress was made, and driving was completed in less than fifteen months.The Mount Lyell mining field is situated in the west of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland, the only means of access being the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company's 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway which connects with the Government railway system of the State at Strahan, on Macquarie Harbour. The region is mountainous, and presents many difficulties to the road and railway engineer. The West Coast range running north and south in a succession of bold prominences, which rise up to 4000 ft. above sea-level, forms the backbone of the district, and on its foothills the Mount Lyell mines are situated. Australia is presently the world's principal producer of rutile and zircon, and also provides a major share of the world's ilmenite. Since 1980, Australia's share of the world's output of these minerals has fallen. Exhaustion of known resources, together with the changing composition of new deposits, is expected to result in Australia's share of the rutile and zircon output continuing to decline. Its role as a major supplier of upgraded ilmenite, that is synthetic rutile, is expected to increase. In 1994, the Bureau of Resource Sciences assessed Australia's demonstrated resources of mineral sands as follows: rutile 14.4 Mt, ilmenite 132.5 Mt, and zircon 21.0 Mt. These resources are located along the coast of Queensland and New South Wales, in the Murray Basin of New South Wales and Victoria, in the southwest corner of Western Australia, and in the Eneabba region, north of Perth. However, some 45 per cent of rutile and zircon resources along the coast of Queensland and New South Wales are not available for mining because of environmental concerns. World demonstrated resources are estimated at 40 Mt (contained TiO2) for rutile, 50 Mt for zircon and approximately 312 Mt (contained T1O2) for ilmenite. Outside of Australia, the most important resources of rutile, ilmenite and zircon are in South Africa (rutile, zircon , and ilmenite in the form of titania slag), Sierra Leone (rutile), India (ilmenite, zircon and rutile), and Canada (hard rock ilmenite). Significant resources of ilmenite occur in Madagascar and Mozambique.

The Central Maratoto Valley in the Coromandel Peninsula contains a sequence of veins in pervasively altered dacite + andesites of the Waipupu Formation. We recognise at least eight different vein types: (1) pyrite stringers, (2) quartz + carbonate veins, (3) crystalline quartz veins, (4) carbonate veins, (5) chlorite + carbonate veins, (6) siderite veinlets, (7) siderite + carbonate veins and (8) carbonate + pyrite veins. The overall temporal trend of the veins is from early pyrite to quartz and then to late carbonate veins. Carbonate veins and pyrite stringers both form planar and irregular veins, whereas some carbonate veins have diffuse contacts with the wall rock. Gold and base metal sulphides are associated with some of the quartz + carbonate veins. Textures within the veins reflect open space filling and multi-phase reopening. A partial record of hydrothermal activity has been preserved by vein crosscutting relationships, hydrothermal alteration minerals and fluid inclusions. Hydrothermal alteration minerals display zonation from south to north. The alteration increases from unaltered to weak propylitic alteration of andesite in the south (MVRCDC1), to sericitic alteration of andesite and dacite in the north (MVRCDC3). The alteration assemblage is dominantly sericitic, with no adularia present, drawing parallels to the Thames region where there is no adularia.

IT has often been stated in the past that the materials known as inert fillers were merely adulterants nsed in the manufacture of paint, and that their purpose was to cheapen paints made from more expensive pigments, such as zinc oxide or white lead. In recent years, however, practical tests in various parts of the world have proved that many of the inert fillers, when used with wisdom, possess very definite and advantageous properties.Another oft-repeated statement which had a far-reaching effect in the past, and which is not without influence to-day, is that the very best paint must always be made from a pure pigment, without admixture with either a fellow pigment or an inert filler. Both or either of these statements may be true in a few isolated instances, but for the vast majority of ordinary painting conditions there is an abundance of experimental evidence to prove that neither is true.With the desire to further investigate these points and po 'determine the best combination of pigments and fillers for use as an outside white paint on plant buildings, a number of panels were prepared in the laboratory of this company.

The mineralogy, textures, and genetic significance of a silver-rich siderite vein and an apparently co-genetic galena vein from the South mine, Broken Hill are discussed.Both veins cut sharply across the Main Lode Horizon and appear to be coeval with thc A.B.H. Consols lode.The minerals of thc siderite vein apparently result from the preferential leaching of silver from Main Lode Horizon ore with a demonstrable "breakdown series" commencing with tetrahedrite, passing through silver sulpho-salts, and ending with simple binary compounds or with elemental silver.The siderite vein has been deposited by metahydrothermal fluids along the lines of Schneiderhohn's "secondary hydrothermal" mineralization.

Dragline operations have played a major and successful role in coal mining around the world for more than 30 years. Because of this long history, many of the operating draglines are reaching an age where maintenance and downtime costs are prohibitive, and decisions need to be made to either replace or refurbish them.In the current economic climate, refurbishment is a popular choice and this usually involves major structural repairs above and below the roller circle, together with replacement of the roller circle components. Often, the dragline tub is also replaced by a completely new one.

The Kingsgate molybdenite pipes are considered on petrochemical data and field occurrence to be, possibly, epi-magmatic plutonic offshoots grading into hydrothermal bodies. There is reason to believe that the ore is derived from a highly acid granite of type similar to that of the tin bearing areas of northern New England. The mineralogy, microtextures and paragenesis of the ore are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Kingsgate Mining Field is situated in steep, heavily timbered terrain 18 miles E.N.E. of Glen Innes and 430 miles north of Sydney. Bismuth and molybdenum ores were discovered at Kingsgate (Yarrow Creek) in 1877. Subsequently some 50 pipes were developed yielding tonnages which at the peak of operations, 1905 to 1920, rivalled production from the rich deposits of northern Queensland.Attempts to revive the field have been made periodically and small parcels of ore have been forthcoming.' During World War II demand for piezioelectric quartz again focussed attention on Kingsgate but twinning and other imperfections of the quartz prevented all but a minor exploitation of the otherwise noteworthy crystals of this locality.There is reason to believe that the ore at Kingsgate is not exhausted through exploration and mining costs would probably be high due to the capricious nature of the pipes and to the irregular distribution of rich ore shoots within them.

A key issue in maintaining the mining industryÆs social contract to access community-owned resources, is the need to be able to demonstrate professional management of resource extraction and the risk associated with mining hazards. Significant failures such as disease relating to coal dust and asbestos and mine disasters such as Moura, Appin and Gretley have resulted in judicial and legislative interventions that respond to the community outcry but do not necessarily effectively manage the longer term risk in a sector driven by new technology. With the implementation of recent amendments to the Queensland Professional Engineers Act, senior engineers in all industries including the mining industry are required to be registered and to demonstrate that they have æmaintained competency in the practice of engineering in the area of engineering for which the (engineer) is ... registeredÆ. This may be facilitated through a report produced by an æAssessing EntityÆ. These entities are approved by the Minister on advice from the Board of Professional Engineers, Queensland. Engineers Australia and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) are the two professional bodies approved as æassessing entitiesÆ charged with facilitating successful implementation of the process established by the legislation. The scope of the legislation covers engineering enterprises in Queensland and engineering activities elsewhere that may have been designed in Queensland. There is currently a challenge to determine what the necessary health and safety competencies for the mining industry are and how the maintenance of these competencies will be assessed. The different approaches taken by the two assessing entities are compared and contrasted. At the legislative level, establishing an obligation to assess professional competency is simple, but at the level of the profession, it is new ground that warrants a substantial research and development input. The challenge is to develop criteria by which the quality of such system can be assessed. The comparison is made by considering such issues as equity, effectiveness, efficiency, objectiveness and transparency. These five indicators are considered in terms of how they are applied in other sectors and how they might be applied in the mining sector.

Equipment wear is strongly related to the performance of grinding circuits. In particular, SAG mills are subjected to the wear of their shell liners and grates. Changes in lifter height and face angle impact mill performance, while classification at the mill discharge is also affected as grates wear out. Moreover, liner mass loss caused by wear affects how operators interpret readings of sensors such as load cells or bearings pressure. Automating and optimising grinding circuits under these constrain becomes challenging due to the nonlinear and dynamic nature of the system. The operation of SAG mill grinding circuits remains largely dependent on human intervention, which frequently results in inconsistencies in performance across shifts, reflecting the operator’s personal preferences, experience, and other human factors. The influence of human factors can be reduced by careful training of operators as well as by automation using advanced supervisory control. The latter approaches could benefit from the development of dynamic process models that consider the effects of wear on the performance of equipment over time. This paper presents detailed industrial data showing the effects of wear on SAG mill performance. Additionally, a dynamic SAG mill model that accounts for these phenomena is proposed and demonstrated in a simulated environment. This model is shown to mimic the effect of wear on the performance of industrial scale mills and the operational constraints they are subject to, thus extending traditional SAG mill models. Incorporating wear into modelling and simulation platforms can improve the understanding of the effects that wear can have on the performance of key assets in comminution circuits and may allow the development of more robust model-based advanced process control strategies.

The Mary Kathleen tailings storage facility (TSF) contains 7.1 Mt of uranium mill tailings. This waste repository was rehabilitated in the mid-1980s using a multibarrier dry cover. At the time of mine closure, it was predicted that acid mine drainage (AMD) generation would not eventuate and that uranium, heavy metals and radionuclides would be adsorbed within the tailings and not seep from the TSF into the environment. This study reports on the environmental status of the TSF. Gamma-ray measurements indicate an intact dry cover of the waste repository. However, seepage (~0.5 L s-1) of acid (pH 5.71), saline (0.31 per cent), high conductivity (8.8 mS cm-1), slightly oxygenated (DO 2.6 mg L-1), radioactive waters occurs from the toe of the tailings dam into the former evaporation ponds and local drainage system. Seepage waters are calcium-magnesium-sulfate rich with elevated Fe, Mn, Ni, U and Zn values. Oxygenation of tailings seepages causes the precipitation of Fe and coprecipitation and adsorption of other metals (Pb, U, Y), metalloids (As), rare earth elements (Ce, La) and radionuclides (U-235, U-238, Th-227). In contrast, Ba, Ni, Sr, Mn, P, S, Ca, Mg, Na and K as well as Ra nuclides (Ra-226 and Ra-228) remain in solution until pH neutralisation and evaporation lead to their precipitation in efflorescences and sulfate-rich evaporative sediments further downstream. Dry capping of Mary Kathleen uranium mill tailings has resulted in physical containment of the wastes. The dry cover shows no signs of erosion and radiation levels are within acceptable limits. However, the flow rate of surface seepage from the TSF occurs at a much higher rate than predicted. Also, the neutralising potential and adsorption capacity of the tailings and underlying aquifer were overestimated at the time of mine closure. AMD has developed mobilising metals, metalloids, rare earth elements, alkalis, radionuclides and sulfate from the waste repository into surface water seepages.

Higher bed height up to 680 mm, including 30 mm hearth layer of sized return sinter and high suction below the grate bars up to 1400 mm WG have resulted in increasing the productivity to a level of 33 t/m2/day and reduced coke rate to a level of 46 kg/tonne sinter. The ferro-wastes like blue dust, flue dust, mill scale, collection from dust catcher and gas cleaning plant, etc have been successfully added in charge mix to produce quality sinters. In this paper, brief description of the work done at Regional Research Laboratory (CSIR) in last few years and two case studies are discussed including the successful development of pan sintering units.

Rock mass strength and brittleness generally have a significant impact on both cavability and fragmentation. Variability in these properties across a panel or block footprint is of particular interest because stronger units have the potential to significantly impact cave shape. This paper describes how FLAC3D™ was used to examine the impact of variability in rock mass properties on predicted cave performance to aid in assessing potential risks associated with the proposed design.A case study orebody was subdivided into a number of domains to reflect the heterogeneity of the rock mass at the scale of a proposed inclined cave. The results suggest that the presence of stronger units has the potential to impact cave shape significantly in the southern half of the cave footprint and could increase the potential for cave stalling at shallow depths. If this unit is stronger and less brittle than expected, an overhang is predicted to develop in the southern half of the inclined cave at depth. The effective hydraulic radius is significantly reduced due to the overhang in the south, and the cave could eventually stall at shallower depths in the north.CITATION:Garza-Cruz, T V and Pierce, M E, 2016. The areas of concern lay in the processing of, and the subsequent hearing into, Waihi Gold's resource consent applications to extend Martha Mine. The proposed amendments to the Resource Management Act 1991 might see the introduction of contestability in the processing of applications - which would have assisted Waihi Gold; and the use of commissioners to hear the applications, with a right of appeal to the Environment Court on points of law only. It is also proposed to have major applications heard directly by the Environment Court. If Waihi Gold's applications had been heard at first instance by the Court, the delays in time and associated costs would have been reduced. However a hearing by commissioners only would not have been satisfactory, there being no right of appeal against the conditions of consent, which if implemented as granted by the Councils would have had a significant impact on the costs associated with the extended project.

Ernest Henry mine (EHM) is a sub-level caving operation located in north-west Queensland, Australia. Located below a previously mined open pit, the underground operation ramped up production to 6.8Mt/a in 2017. The EHM ore body dips at 45 degrees to the South and therefore requires each level to “step out” from the level above as seen in Figure 1. Within this step out zone it is important to both maximise recovery and allow for efficient operation of the underground workings production to bring the level up to full production as quickly as possible. Throughout the step out design process, a combination of further defining the ore boundary, using lessons learnt from production performance on upper levels and the introduction of design improvements, has reduced the production ramp-up time, decreased costs and increased recovery for a single level at EHM. Current studies, and analysis of previouslypublished data, have lead to a re-evaluation of the inclusion of the North D'Aguilar block within the "Gympie Province" in southeast Queensland. The metamorphic rocks are part of a Late Devonian(?)-Early Carboniferous subduction accretionary complex and are unconformably overlain by volcanic and coarse-grained clastic rocks of probable Early or mid-Permian age, as well as by Early to middle Triassic rocks of the Esk Rift. Metamorphic fabrics in the basement rocks include not only those that can be related to convergence, but also younger fabrics that may have developed during Late Carboniferous or Permian uplift and unroofing of the accretionary rocks. A predominance of basic schists, some of which are blue amphibole-bearing, and associated fine-grained pelagic and hemipelagic sediments in the Northern D'Aguilar block contrast with the siliciclastic-dominated sediments of most of the accretionary complexes of the New England Orogen. However the similarity of structural style, and metamorphic and igneous history, with adjacent basement blocks, and with other blocks throughout the New England orogen, suggests that the North D'Aguilar block simply represents deeper, probably underplated, levels of the same subduction complex. Uplift and cooling may have been accomplished by extensional faulting during Permian inception of the Esk rift, which flanks the block on the west.

The history of mining is rightly proud of its achievements in improving productivity and cost improvements over the years. No matter what measure is used, tonnes per manhour, cost per tonne, etc vast improvements have been made over the last hundred years. In fact over the last ten years in Australian coal mines raw coal output per employee has increased by 60 per cent. When one examines why these improvements have taken place the principal reasons have been technological advancement in mining equipment, excavator and dump truck capacity increases, longwall and continuous miners continually improving in reliability and size. Of course all these improvements are correlated to an increase in capital cost. Even with the above-mentioned advances the pressure for increased performance is as strong as ever. The international mining and mineral-processing sector is currently operating in a recessive market with some traditional commodities, eg gold trading at 20 year lows. During recessive times senior management will demand greater returns on capital employed: the obvious choices being reducing costs or increasing throughput. In addition, head office environments will often place a capital freeze on operational management so the opportunity to take advantage of technological change is not available. The challenge is, therefore, to increase throughput and cut costs without the need for capital. The answer is to optimise the existing labour and plant. If done systematically a result in productivity improvement, in our experience, as high as 45 per cent can be achieved with the average across South East Asia and Australasia being 21 - 23 per cent. The intention of this paper is to present a systematic approach to labour and machine utilisation thereby gaining the greatest possible return on the existing capital base.
