Indigenous brown coals, which provide a readily available primary energy source, have played a significant part in the industrial development of Victoria. The deposits located in the Latrobe Valley compare in extent with other major deposits of brown coal in the world. Smaller but valuable deposits occur at Stradbroke, Gelliondale, Anglesea and Bacchus Marsh. Extensive drilling, aided by geophysical surveys, and detailed analyses of coal samples, have enabled the extent and quality of these Tertiary deposits to be Defined.

Most world-class high-grade (60 - 67 wt per cent Fe) hematite iron ore deposits are the product of enrichment of Precambrian iron-formations but processes responsible for enrichment are still unclear. Different models, ranging from syngenetic and diagenetic (King, 1989), deep-seated hydrothermal (Powell et al, 1999; Barley et al, 1999; Taylor et al, 2001; Gutzmer et al, 2002) and ancient supergene (Morris, 1980; 1985; Van Schalkwyk and Beukes, 1986) to modern supergene (MacLeod, 1966) have been suggested. The high-grade hematite deposits stand in contrast to martiteûgoethite ores which are generally accepted to be the result of supergene enrichment of iron-formation because they are found along Cretaceous to Tertiary lateritic weathering profiles (Morris, 1980; Harmsworth et al, 1990). Uncertainties about the origin of the high-grade hematite ores appear largely due to the monomineralic composition of the ores. They are almost exclusively composed of hematite (as microcrystalline hematite and martite), a mineral with wide stability field and very simple chemical composition that reveals little about its origin. Second, many of the deposits have been overprinted by later deformation and chemical weathering obscuring primary ore characteristics and zonation (Taylor et al, 2001). Third, surprisingly few detailed geological studies have been undertaken on the deposits with the aim of unraveling ore genesis. Most studies focus on the present-day structure of orebodies and their general physical-chemical composition for mining and beneficiation purposes. A more thorough understanding of the origin of high-grade hematite iron ore deposits may be gained by combining available mining-orientated data with systematic petrographic-geochemical analyses of different ore generations and hematite phases. This paper presents a first summary of results of an ongoing study, started some two years ago, of high-grade iron ore deposits in South Africa, India and Brazil, including a comparison with the rather well studied deposits of the Hamersley Province in Australia.

Kambalda Nickel Mines (KNM) currently have eight operating underground mines, three on care and maintenance and other orebodies at various stages of development. Each operation differs greatly in scale, ore grade, milling characteristics and cost structure. The optimum number of mines operating at any one time and their level of production, within the constraints of mill blending requirements and overall mill capacity, is the key to maximising profit in a climate of fluctuating nickel price. Cost models are developed for each mining operation which relate ore tonnes mined to total cost per pound of nickel produced from that mine. Aggregating the mine cost models provides a composite cost model for the entire operation. The cost models provide the operating levels necessary for each of the mines and hence Kambalda as a whole, to operate at the lowest cost per pound of nickel produced. However, lowest operating cost does not necessarily lead to maximum profit. The level of nickel price above operating cost can dictate maximum profit positions which are contrary to the lowest cost position. In addition, the decision to temporarily shutdown mines or reopen mines in response to nickel price movements comes at a cost. In considering the optimum operating position, the price of production capacity flexibility needs to be taken into account. This paper describes the process used to assess all these factors in arriving at the optimum operating position for Kambalda Nickel Mines for varying nickel prices. The same methodology can be used by corporate management in managing multiple mine sites as well as mine management managing multiple orebodies or stoping blocks for maximum profit.

In recent years there have been significant developments in the tech- nology available for blast monitoring, analysis and simulation. Progress in these areas has been achieved through research conducted by explo- sives manufacturers and independent research groups from universities and mining companies. Miners are increasingly keen to exploit this tech- nology to help them design blasts which make optimum use of explo- sives to produce easily excavated muckpiles for the minimum possible cost. The art of blast design in the future will increasingly depend on an adequate understanding of the nature of the rock mass, the perfor- mance of explosives and the characteristics required of the muckpile to suit the chosen excavation machinery. Despite recent advances in blast simulation and the prediction of blasting performance, the best way to determine how a particular explosive will function relative to other explosives is to conduct properly designed and monitored field trials. This paper discusses recent work at Mount Thorley Colliery which demonstrates that field blasting trials can be monitored and analysed to provide quantitative data on the relative performance of bulk explosives. Techniques used in the trials included the sampling and analysis of explo- sives, insitu measurement of VOD, monitoring of near and far field vibra- tions, high speed and still photography and survey measurement of muckpiles. These techniques provided data for the analysis of throw, swell, fragmentation and burden movement together with data on the consistency and robustness of different explosive products. The blasting trials allowed both the shock and heave energy of various explosives to be observed in the field and led to the derivation of design rules for the use of differ- ent explosives at the mine.

To George Orwell the year of 1984 was the inspiration for a book. To most New Zealanders it was the year that the fourth Labour Government was elected to power. It was also the year that the review of mining legislation commenced. While Orwell's book and the election of Labour are clearly events of some historic note, one could be excused for classifying the review of minerals legislation somewhat differently in terms of its present achievements! Since the review began it has led a tortuous path through a rapidly evolving policy environment to a point three years hence where no major policies have been determined.

Autonomous systems are receiving a lot of 'press' - and rightly so, as they hold a potential for achieving quantum leaps in productivity and cost gains. Caterpillar feels that it is important that the infrastructure of on-board systems are understood and can be utilised more in the near term to `grow' a user up to the stage of autonomous operation.

The Fitzpatrick Orebody is a three and a half million tonne fault bounded portion of the early-middle Proterozoic Broken Hill Orebody.The Fitzpatrick Orebody was discovered in 1975 by diamond drilling from the 36 Level Exploratory Drive. This followed persistent geologically oriented exploration and a courageous decision by mine management to deepen No. 3 Shaft to provide exploratory development across the Globe Vauxhall Shear and allow effective drilling of the target area.The stratiforrn oebody consists of three lenses, the lead rich No. 2 and 3 Lenses and smaller zinc lode. They represent a down plunge extension and boudinaged, fault-bounded portion of the main Broken Hill ore lenses. The surrounding host rocks are extensively faulted and jointed due to complex history of movement on the bounding shears. This results in extremely poor ground conditions during mining. The ore was delineated for mining development using three dimensional fan drilling from exploratory and hanging wall drive drill sites.

The application of discreet event simulation has matured in modelling manufacturing systems for production analysis. This simulation tool was used in studying a number of mining operations, especially material handling processes. The study of truck-shovel operation including equipment matching, selection, and production estimation utilised the discrete event simulation for providing valuable decision-making information. The sophistication of the available simulation tools grew over times, and simulation driven animation was used to facilitate the validation and visualisation of the simulated system. This form of visualisation enhanced the simulation use greatly. First of all, it provided a communication medium to transfer information to the non-technical managerial personnel as a better decision-making tool. Moreover, the animated visualisation provided a validation tool to check the working of the simulated system and interaction among its components.

The introduction of large diameter drill holes and mass firings in underground metalliferous mines has led to an increase in the number of reported sulfide dust explosions in Australia and overseas. Adaptation of the coal mining technique of using limestone to inhibit or prevent dust explosions has not been entirely successful as the development and inhibition of a sulfide dust explosion is somewhat different from that of a coal dust explosion. Tests were carried out on two pyritic ore samples, sulfur contents of 41 and 36 per cent, in 8 and 20 litre explosion chambers to evaluate the effect of the addition of limestone on the maximum explosive pressures developed and rates of pressure rise. Significant values were obtained in both chambers with dusts containing 60 per cent ore and 40 per cent limestone. The percentages of limestone required to inhibit the pyritic dusts were considerably higher than those values generally accepted by the mining industry and the current methods used to inhibit sulfide dust explosions should be re-evaluated.

The passive interception and in situ treatment of groundwater using permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) has, within the past decade, become an accepted remedial approach to the control of plumes containing dissolved organic and inorganic contaminants. Since the first applications of the technology in the early-1990s, there have been several field-scale PRBs that have provided excellent treatment of dissolved metals in groundwater. Additional commercial applications and demonstration projects continue to be developed. Three field-scale applications and supporting laboratory columns have shown that several thousands of milligrams per litre of sulfate, more than 1000 mg/L iron, and several tens of milligrams per litre of other metals can be removed from groundwater by PRBs that promote sulfate reduction. The reactive materials, which incorporate various forms of organic carbon, promote microbially mediated sulfate reduction, the generation of hydrogen sulfide, and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble iron and other metal sulfide minerals. Effective performance has been achieved by PRBs installed at a mine-tailings impoundment in 1995 (Sudbury, Ontario) and at an industrial facility (Vancouver, British Columbia). These PRBs have removed iron and other metals from groundwater. Similar materials were also used to create reactive layers within test cells directly in a tailings impoundment in 1999 (Timmins, Ontario) with the objective of removing iron and sulfate from the pore water before it migrates from the tailings impoundment. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been shown to provide excellent removal of chromium (VI) in a PRB, which was installed at the US Coast Guard facility in Elizabeth City in 1996, by reduction and precipitation reactions. Laboratory tests have also shown that ZVI reduces As(V) to As(III), which is subsequently removed from solution by co-precipitation with iron oxyhydroxides. In groundwater containing sulfate, ZVI and mixtures containing organic carbon can promote sulfate reduction and the subsequent precipitation of sparingly soluble arsenic and other metal sulfides. A trial PRB system was installed in 2001 and was shown to attenuate arsenic and other electroactive metals in groundwater at an industrial facility in northwestern Ontario. Basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag, a waste material generated by the steel industry, has shown excellent potential for the removal of phosphate, elements such as arsenic and water-borne pathogens from groundwater in field and laboratory tests.

The tertiary educational institut- ions are making a valuable contribution without formal financial support. The Australian Mineral Foundation is offering a programme of continuing education in the earth science and related disciplines both by direct initiative and by co-operation with existing tertiary educational institutions.

An empirical kinetic model is discussed that enables the number of stages in a carbon-in-pulp plant and the amount of carbon in each stage to be calculated for any desired metallurgical performance. It is shown that a knowledge of the kinetics of gold extraction by activated carbon in each stage assists plant operators in the important' areas of process control and optimization. Factors such as mixing efficiency, concentration and distribution of carbon through the plant, bypassing of pulp through a stage, and carbon poisoning are examined. The resin-in-pulp process for the extraction of gold cyanide is also discussed, and the chemistry of absorption and elution on strong- and weak-base resins is examined. In addition, operating results from a small-scale resin-in-pulp pilot plant are presented, and various applications in which resin-in-pulp may be preferable to carbon-in-pulp are discussed.

ITSL Technology group employs around 100 people at Mississauga in Canada. Its long and proud history as a driving force for the worldÆs nickel industry continues, progressively adapting to meet IncoÆs ongoing development needs. The nickel industry, unlike many others in the minerals processing world, has not evolved into one or two narrow technology paradigms. Rather, each process requires a degree of optimisation to meet the characteristics of the ore. Without a competent team to address this complexity, the uncertainties that arise can greatly increase the risk (and costs) associated with the nickel industry developments. The development work carried out at ITSL Technology ranges from milling and metallurgical processing of ores through to development of value added products for the battery and electronics industries. It covers routine evaluation of ores for exploration (mine planning and greenfield), and provides on the ground support to bring specialist technical perspectives to site-based projects. In recent years, ITSL Technology has had as its particular focus the process development and commissioning support for IncoÆs major projects. Over the next several years, Inco will commission its Goro laterite operation, design and construct the further processing facility for VoiseyÆs Bay, undertake major upgrades at Sudbury, Thompson and PT Inco, and bring forward some additional resources currently in the exploration stage. The appropriate mix of both internal and external resources to effectively manage this project portfolio will prove critical to success. The key to ITSL Technology meeting these development challenges has been in working closely with its internal customers to ensure alignment of the value proposition, to identify the critical issues to be managed, and to understand the deliverables required. This paper discusses examples to reinforce these principles in the definition and development for two different projects; processing of VoiseyÆs Bay ores and concentrates and resource optimisation at Thompson.

The use of spectral data has traditionally been for obtaining mineral information and for mapping out alteration systems. The output from these data is typically in the form of mineral assemblages and data on relative proportions of minerals. However there is much more than just mineral information in the spectral data. Most importantly, the data allow the user to obtain vital information on mineral chemistry for some key alteration minerals. The mineral chemistry data allow the users to evaluate multiple phases of alteration of the same key mineral species, and to assess which phase is related to mineralisation. Mineral indices can be extracted from the spectral data and plotted to represent variations in the chemistry and relative proportions of key mineral phases as downhole, section and three-dimensional (3D) plots. These data can also be compared with the spatial distribution of the mineralisation by integration with geochemical and logging data. Through spatial and statistical evaluation the mineral information obtained using spectral analysis can provide vital information to assist in building alteration models and therefore improve targeting for further drilling and exploration.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Elaine Dorothy Cu-Au (REE-U) skarn deposit in the Mt Isa Inlier, Queensland, Australia is characterised by extensive metamorphic calc-silicate hornfels long before hydrothermal skarn and complicated deformation history. The deposit is hosted by the Corella Formation (1780–1740 Ma) and exhibits two phases of skarn formation in the study area – banded fine-grained diopsidic hornfels (Phase 1) and coarse-grain pyroxene skarn (Phase 2). Phase 1 skarn is predeformation and is interpreted to have been caused by the 1743–1734 Ma Burstall Magmatic Suites, whereas the coarse-grained pyroxene skarn (Phase 2 skarn) postdates the deformation and peak metamorphism events. Phase 2 skarn consists of prograde pyroxene, less garnet and titanite, retrograde epidote, REE-allanite, amphibole, biotite, and later sulfides, carbonate, quartz, anhydrite and chlorite. It hosts most of the copper mineralisation, with the REE elements occurring mostly in allanite. Titanite coexisting with allanite and Cu-Fe sulfides in Phase 2 skarn has been dated by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) at 1524 ± 9 Ma (207Pb/206Pb). The ages are similar to Williams-Naraku Batholiths, which outcrop approximately 40 km to the east in the Eastern Fold Belt. In Elaine Dorothy, the isotopic compositions for calcite cluster around 12.2‰ d18O and -3.7‰ d13C. It probably resulted from a mixing processes between marine sourced carbon-oxygen (ca 20‰ d18O and -0.5‰ d13C) and other distinct geochemical reservoirs, eg magmatic C-O. These features indicate that Phase 2 skarn and Cu-Au (REE-U) mineralisation may be related to unexposed intrusions at deeper levels.CITATION:Sha, P, Spandler, C and Chang, Z, 2015. Brand se Baai, on the North-Western Cape Coastline of Southern Africa, is the site of the Namakwa Sands Limited Heavy Mineral Sands Mining Operation. The mine is a 14 000 000 tonnes per annum open-cast strip-style mining operation using truck and excavators to mine the sand. The orebody consists of relatively unconsolidated sands reworked by fluvial, marine and aeolian mechanisms. The total orebody includes three primary ore types, namely the Red Aeolian Sands, the Dorbank (a hardcap layer) and the Orange Feldspathic Sands, which forms the bulk of the resource. Mine planning and scheduling is done using a 50 m + 50 m variable bench height system with three primary bench heights. The Aeolian and Dorbank each have a bench that varies with their thickness of up to a maximum eight metres and the Orange feldspathic sand, a standard bench height of eight metres. For a number of years Namakwa Sands used a complex 2D, Datamine Based, macro system to perform the resource evaluation and mine design. As the mining operations expanded it became clear that a complete system redesign was required to cope with the increasing operational pressures coming to bear on the old system. The biggest challenges facing any replacement system are the sheer scale of the mining operation (16 km long and 7 km wide resulting in a minimum of 30 000 individual 50 m + 50 m mining blocks), the size of the geological data files (up to one gigabyte) and representing the benching system accurately (as the benches follow the topography and are not horizontal). In addition to these large-scale issues, the ability to run multiple mine design scenarios was required, an aspect which the old system was unable to perform adequately. Based upon these primary difficulties, a new business process was developed which required a complete rethink of the mine design methodology as well as the creation of a new system to deplete the resource model, produce monthly reconciliation evaluations and create a ultimate pit limit based on the operations mining cost model. Using a system based on the Earthworks Mine2-4D Mine Design and Scheduling System (with its mine design and scheduling specific tools), as well as a small, customised program, massive time-savings have been made. It is now possible to run several life of mine scenarios in the same timeframe that a single life of mine run took under the old system. This paper will present the methodology and business decisions behind the new Namakwa Sands system, and detail the restructuring and development used to deal with the large data set sizes and long processing times inherent in the old system. Future enhancements to the system that will make it more generically applicable to open-cast mining scenarios will also be dealt with.
