Recent disasters such as the failure of the Mount Polley tailings embankment remind us of the risks that tailings facilities pose. It is widely recognised that dam-break assessments are a vital tool in identifying the consequences of the failure of a facility, which in turn can be used to develop emergency action plans. A typical assessment includes an estimation of breach parameters and outflow volume, followed by the preparation of an inundation map to illustrate potential flow extents and downstream impacts. This paper focuses on the estimation of outflow volumes, which is an area that the authors feel can be improved. Presently, many types of analyses assume that the volume of tailings released is only a function of the storage volume and dam height. After a review of several documented tailings failures, it has been found that the extent and depth of the supernatant pond needs to be considered as it is just as important, if not more so, as the storage volume and dam height. Tailings facilities with excess water storage have a higher risk of failure as they are more susceptible to overtopping, piping and liquefaction failures. In addition, they pose greater failure consequences as the saturated conditions will lead to more material being mobilised.This paper has reviewed available information on a number of tailings dam failures and proposes an alternative estimation of potential tailings release volumes as a function of supernatant water stored on the facility for use in dam-break analyses. In a broader sense, the paper seeks to shift the current risk paradigm from tailings dam heights to volumes of water stored and provides a basis for continuing research and discussion.CITATION:Rourke, H and Luppnow, D, 2015. The opportunities offered by an increasingly volatile world invite the international consultant or engineering services contractor to broaden attitudes, diversify interests, expand capabilities, retain and develop specialist skills and base judgements upon sound principles and solid experience. The wide-ranging scope of this review reflects such a change but the topics of discussion are not intended to be exhaustive or to detract from many other current developments.The subject of environmental protection, effluent control and pollution prevention is a primary consideration in the application of many mineral processing technologies but is not covered here. There is an array of developments relating to noxious gas emissions and toxic wastes and the paramount importance of this matter justifies comprehensive conferences dedicated solely to the application of suitable measures. This review concentrates therefore on the main stream processing techniques for the primary recovery of values.

The term geometallurgy (or geometallurgical) first appeared in the literature some 40 years ago and has a wide range of definitions and perspectives which increases the barriers of communication between practitioners and across functional groups and management levels within organisations. However the consistent theme running through the diversity of definitions and perspectives is the requirement for close collaboration between the relevant disciplines. This concept of geometallurgy arguably goes back to the earliest days of the exploitation of mineral deposits, through the mid-1500s to the beginning of the 20th century.This holistic and integrated view was diminished during the 20th century due to a number of factors which included the commencement and continuing upward trend of large-scale mining and the expansion in production, the rise of scientific and classical management theories and methodologies, increase in specialisation and the development of traditional project planning. The re-emergence of geometallurgy in the late 20th century required the relevant functional units and disciplines to collaborate as a team. This necessitates a common understanding that the geometallurgical program’s goals must be obtained, which requires clear and consistent communication, particularly with the modern trend of virtual teams.A multi-dimensional construct is proposed to assist in providing a consistent approach in the communication of the context and purpose of both general and specific geometallurgical programs, thus simplifying communication. This geometallurgical construct consists of the dimensions of process span, response knowledge, variability knowledge, spatial knowledge, application and project phase in relation to extraction process(es) applied to geological materials from a mineral deposit. These dimensions are then linked to the phase of mineral project development in which the geometallurgical program is being applied, which ranges from advanced exploration through to operational execution. This paper outlines the multi-dimensional construct with examples of how the context, purpose and scope of geometallurgical programs can be clearly delineated and communicated.

The marine portion of the Pacific Basin and Rim constitutes a significant part of the world's surface in which the mineral resources are virtually undeveloped. Indications of substantial resources have resulted in speculation and uncertainty with regard to their potential in the near term. The main issues are centered on the markets for the resource materials, the technology needs for their recovery, and the possible impacts of their development on the environment. While the governments of Japan, France, the Soviet Union, India, China, and Korea are financing new programs in deep ocean mining, the US is consolidating its early leadership by the continuation of NOAA's authority under the Deep Seabed Hard Mineral Resources Act and the Sea Grant Act, Interior's authority under the outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, and by the development of a new Marine Minerals Technology Center within the Department of Interior's mineral institutes program, managed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The Center has a Continental Shelf Division (CSD) located in Mississippi, and an Oceans Basin Division (OBD) located in Hawaii. Research and training in the divisions is directed toward the practical aspects of mineral recovery from the nearshore and deep ocean environments with a strong bias for the OBD toward industrial and international cooperative programs in the Pacific Basin and Rim. In terms of resource development, the marine minerals in the Pacific Basin may be favored in some cases, in competition with land sources, by political and environmental considerations.

Western Mining Corporation (W.M.C.) operates a nickel refinery at Kwinana, 30 km south of Perth. The refinery commenced pro- duction in May 1970, with a rated capacity of 15 000 tpa of nickel metal. A hydrometallurgical route was chosen as the most expedient way to produce nickel metal at a time when world demand for nickel was outstripping the supply. Later events dictated that an increase in production from the refinery be achieved. To this end, matte produced from Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter, which was commissioned in 1972, was used in varying proportions as a complement to the concentrate initially utilised as input to the refinery. The effect of matte addition was to increase the capacity to 30 000 tonnes of nickel per annum. This was accompanied by other benefits which were 1. reduction in energy consumption per unit of nickel produced, 2. improved metal extraction, 3. improved precious metal recovery, 4. reduced production of ammonium sulphate by-product. Refinery operating results for the years 1970 to 1983 show how matte feed has improved refinery performance in these areas.

The paper describes the 209 in. single stage axial flow mine ventilating fan which commenced operation at The Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken'Hill, N.S.W., in January, 1954.This fan is used to ,ventilate the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited and, at the time of installation it was the largest fan of its type in the world. It has amaximum capacity of 900,000 c.f.m. at 4·2 in. watergauge and is equipped with adjustable pitch blades and a novel form of variable speed drive.The considerations which lead to the adoption of this particular design are outlined, and a full description of the contruction and installation of the fan and auxiliaries is given.Comprehensive acceptance tests were carried out on the completed installation and, the testing procedure is described in detail. The results of sound level measurements are also included. A brief report on the performance during the 12 month period from 1st July, 1954, to 30th June, 1955, is then given.SELECTION AND DESIGN OF FANGeneral ConsiderationsBecause of the economic advantages of joint ventilation of the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, it was decided, after a full review of the future ventilating requirements of both mines, to sink a 20 ft. diameter circular upcast airway on the common boundary of the two properties, to handle a maximum quantity of 900,000 c.f.m.The anticipated air requirements were at this stage estimated to be:(a) initially 700,000 c.f.m. through a mine equivalent orifice of 160 to 2'40 sq. ft. Stratabound/stratiform and remobilised mineralisation have been recognised as the two dominant styles of mineralisation which constitute the Broken Hill ore deposit. Recognition of prospective sites for accumulation of ore depends on understanding the heterogeneity of the ore environment and the distribution of the two styles of mineralisation. The internal stratigraphy of the Broken Hill ore deposit and its enveloping rocks, is described, and a generalised stratigraphic setting of the stratiform mineralisation is outlined. Fhiphasis is placed on the existence of closely-spaced sub-basins as potential sites for ore accumulation close to the Broken Hill ore deposit. The MIMDAS geophysical data acquisition system developed and tested by the former MIM Exploration Pty Ltd (MIMEX) is now commercially available worldwide through Geophysical Resources and Services Pty Ltd (GRS). The system implements several new features in its design that give it significant advantages over conventional systems and allows for new approaches to electrical exploration. In particular, the achievable signal to noise levels permit exploration to depths once thought beyond the range of electrical exploration. The flexible multi-channel configuration lends itself to truly 3D surveys in the style of modern seismic techniques. Each of these aspects is illustrated with a number of case histories from both Australia and South America.

Since the days of mandatory high cost pilot plant testing in 6 ft + 2 ft SAG mills autogenous griding/semi-autogenous grinding (AG/SAG), mill specific energy is now calculated by various empirical formulae and pilot testing carried out in small laboratory mills. Barratt (1989) described a method using Bond Indices than adding a single factor of 1.25 to arrive at the AG/SAG specific energy. In 1991 the Canadians developed the SAGPower Index (SPI), test using 2 kg of material in a 300 mm diameter mill. This test has been further developed by Starkey, Hindstrom and Orser (2006). This test now includes a Bond Ball mill work index test.The Macpherson test is still being offered by some testing facilities. This dry test requires at least 180 kg of material.Morrell (2004) formulated an AG/SAG specific energy generator based on a drop weight index Value (DWi). This DWi value is related to the Ab parameter and the material specific gravity. Morrell reconfigured the BondÆs Third Theory formula to cause extra power requirements to be inputed. This technique incorporates the material specific gravity (SG). The AG/SAG specific energy values produced using this method are susceptible to higher values of crushing and rod mill work indices.This paper offered describes a more simple method to generate AG/SAG specific energies. This programme incorporates Bond work indices, the JKMRC parameter Ab measuring impact breakage and the parameter ta measuring the abrasion rate, then employs a series of efficiency values nominated for each transition size (AG/SAG T80). These efficiency values have been compiled over the years from actual operating plants and documented reports.CITATION:Burgess, D, 2012. Both innovation and excellence are desirable attributes of education, as they are also markers in the progression of the human race, but how attainable are they? The interaction of minerals and humanity provides a special insight into the development of both criteria, from the discovery that chert cuts, through the Bronze Age and the first use of metal alloys for implements, to using coal, oil and uranium as sources of fuel. However, there have been many hiccups along the way, where excellence in one respect has meant disaster in another. Examples are in the exploitation of asbestos, and in traditionally poor work practices in mining, both contributing to the widespread public belief that minerals and mining are ecologically undesirable. Yet is this perception based on the unrealistic expectation of innovation and excellence being simultaneous qualities of any given process? Common sense born of experience indicates that the journey from one, to the other, is usually a long and often tedious process, with much trial and error before excellence is attained. In our time, the partnership between academia and industry is the usual pathway to achieve it. Even so, we should take care that innovation does not become overwhelmed by the pursuit of excellence: as history clearly demonstrates, humanity depends upon both.

The gold treatment plant of Great Western Consolidated N.L. is at Bullfinch, Western Australia, 22 miles north of Southern Cross, which is 100 miles west of Kalgoorlie. A railway to Southern Cross connects the mine with the main Perth-Kalgoorlie line.The plant, which commenced operations on the 31st October, 1952, was, designed by Messrs. Alex: Stewart & Co. in consultation with the technical staff of Western Mining Corporation Ltd. to treat 1,000 long tons a day, made up of approximately equal parts of quarry oxidized ore and underground sulphide ore, by moderately coarse grinding (2-3 per cent plus 65 mesh Tyler) and straight cyanidation without straking. The design had to allow for future treatment of all sulphide ore at the rate of 40,000 tons per 28-day periodand to make provision for the possible later inclusion of preaeration treatment.The test work on .which design was based was done on representative development samples, the mine being divided into zones for this purpose, to check possible local variations from average treatment behaviour. Proposed mill feed mixtures were made up from time to time for complete ore dressing tests, which were conducted in the Western Mining Corporation laboratory at Kalgoorlie.The chief feature of the design was that the plant had to handle the extremes of very soft, poor settling and filtering oxidized ore and very hard, good settling and filtering sulphide ore. On one hand, crushers and mills had to be large enough to handle the sulphide ore and on the other, thickeners and filters had to be large enough to handle the oxidized ores.The design is marked by simplicity, the use of large units of equipment, and flexibility to cope with a variety of ores.

The role of chemical speciation in alkaline cyanide solutions is discussed by reference to recent experimental data from the authors' laboratories. It is shown that serious gaps exist in our present knowledge of the thermodynamics of cyanide complexes in solution. Nevertheless, using the available data and the JESS suite of computer programs it has been possible to develop a simplified chemical speciation model for alkaline cyanide solutions under conditions relevant to the gold extraction process. Some possible implications of the model for plant operations are Discussed.

In the current climate, there is a real need to bridge the gap between theory and the real world mining considerations, and develop viable, cost-effective, high performance thickeners. With a greater need to extract profits from both difficult-to-process ores and lower grade orebodies, coupled with the necessity to produce 'greener', less water intensive technologies, suppliers need to take current thickener designs to the next level and into the 21st century. The complexity of 'getting it right' within a thickenerÆs feedwell, the 'nerve centre' of the thickener, is no small task. Delivering dilution water and mixing this water with incoming feed slurry, addition of flocculant, maximising flocculant-slurry interaction to build aggregate size, minimising unabsorbed flocculant percentage, volume average of solids volume fraction, momentum dissipation ratio, dilution recycle ratio, volume average shear, maximum shear rate at exit, aggregate size on exit, uniform discharge profile and more ù all of these need to occur in the right order and in the right proportions within the feedwell. This paper discusses the genesis and evolution of a new feedwell design, the first major innovation in the thickening industry in over 15 years.

The mining industry represents a small part of the international economy. Comprising few large companies, the industry exhibits volatile returns and over the past 25 years has failed to produce a long-term return that meets its cost of capital. It is not surprising, therefore, that the minerals extraction and processing industry is under considerable pressure from the investment community to lift its game. Management and boards are responding to this pressure by implementing more exacting cost control measures, capital management programs and through the process of consolidation. However, the cost of capital to the industry appears to have increased in recent years and investor attention seems to be preoccupied with the ænewÆ economy. Both of these influences will conspire to raise the bar for acceptable industry economic performance. This paper provides a useful snapshot of the minerals and extraction industry as it enters the 21st century. It remains cautious about future performance other than to conclude that single digit returns are likely to prevail, albeit at higher levels than over the past 25 years.

The Tarnagulla Gold Project in Central Victoria, Australia, was developed and operated by Reef Mining NL between 1994 and early 2000, producing 53 000 ounces of gold from the Nick OÆTime Shoot, a single narrow vein shoot structure within part of the larger Poverty Reef, with a strike length ranging from 30 m to 60 m. The ore shoot was developed over a vertical interval of 190 m, using a small cross-section decline and small, mechanised equipment. Various stoping methods were employed including mechanised cut-and-fill with a single boom jumbo, hand-held mining using airleg drills and rope scrapers, and small uphole retreat stopes using a line of sight remote operated LHD to recover a crown pillar. Experience during stoping showed that airleg drilling and rope scrapers gave much better dilution control than diesel equipment. Innovations included a low-cost hydraulic fill system. Due to the small scale of the deposit, the feasibility studies, planning and permitting for the mine were based on very limited drilling information; however, the mine was brought into production within two years of the discovery. While the mine made an operating profit, it failed to fully repay capital at the low gold price then prevailing. Applying the lessons learned from the operation to optimise the access and stoping method, the project is re-examined at todayÆs gold price and operating costs. Central Victoria has the potential to host many similar small deposits. The authors were respectively Non-Executive Director and Resident Manager for Reef Mining NL when the mine was operating.

Over the past 75 years, the mining of platinum has predominantly focused on the Merensky Reef horizon in the western Bushveld region of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC) of South Africa (Figure 1). The orebody is relatively flat dipping at 10¦ to 25¦, narrow tabular in shape and has been mined to a maximum depth of some 1600 m within Anglo Platinum. This has resulted in the installation of up to four generations of shaft systems as mining progressed into reserves at greater depth. In recent years, with the improvement in processing technology and improved economics, in particular with the improved price of palladium, the mining of the UG2 Chromitite Reef is proving economically viable. The UG2 Chromitite Reef occurs below the Merensky Reef in the succession and the normal separation varies from 15 m to 400 m, with the largest separation between the reefs occurring in the eastern region of the BIC. The UG2 Chromitite Reef horizon is now being accessed from existing Merensky mining infrastructure by cross-cutting back through the stratigraphy where appropriate, or by establishing new decline cluster systems from surface, along the extensive strike length of the various mining properties. These declines are generally established utilising mechanised mining techniques. This paper gives an overview of the techno-economic approaches considered and evaluated for the selection of the optimum mining and shaft systems. More specifically, the paper reviews the design parameters used, techno-economics, conveyor versus haul alternatives, logistics simulations, capital costs, system performance, time to market or ramp-up success, important system differences and lessons learnt.

Evaluation of reserves on a production scale within a shear-hosted gold deposit is complicated by the nature of the mineralisation itself. The 'payable' ground seems to be confined to areas with intense shearing, while the remainder of the deposit is characterised by 'background' mineralisation at a very low level.

This report outlines the experience of Australian mining operators in dealing with large falls of roof in advance of longwall supports. Previous and present techniques used for face stabilisation have been described, together with an analysis of [actors which contributed to the roof falls, in each case. Attention has been focused on the stabilisation technique used at Angus Place Colliery, where the face coal was successfully reinforced by injecting chemical foam into Lite fractured areas. Although considered to be one of the worst roof falls in the history of Australian longwalls (60 m in length and up to 10 in in height), it was subsequently possible to resume cutting in Longwall 9 two weeks after the foam injection. A preliminary schedule of work involving the 'strata replacement' method, is also discussed. It has been based substantially on experience gained with cementitious supports, principally by ACIRL and Monier Resources.

This work aimed at evaluating the acid rock drainage (ARD) potential of five samples of a Brazilian gold sulfide mine in a decommissioning process. Three of the most traditional ARD prediction techniques, Standard Acid Base Accounting (Std ABA), Modified Acid Base Accounting (Modified ABA), as static methods, and humidity cells as a kinetic method were tested. Both the Std ABA and the Modified ABA results indicated an acid generation potential for some of the studied samples. In the other cases the results were inconclusive. The five samples were then submitted to humidity cell tests during 27 to 30 weeks. At the end of the period, the leachate pH was stabilised in a range from 3.4 - 4.1 (four samples) to 5 (one sample). The presence of relatively high levels of sulfate and dissolved metals was detected throughout the operation, specifically, Ni and Zn, and less frequently, As. These findings are discussed with the help of the samples mineralogy and Eh-pH diagrams. The results obtained in this investigation indicated potential environmental risks of this mining area. In this particular case, the kinetic tests were shown to be essential to the identification of the samples ARD potential.
