The Permian coal in the Muja Coal Measures of Collie Basin of Western Australia has a subdued lustre because of the fine laminations of lithotypes, and the dominance of dull and dull banded lithotypes with minor bright, bright banded and fusinous types. The maceral composition of the coal is variable, however the macerals of vitrinite and inertinite groups dominate and the exinite and mineral matter contents are low. The lithotypes have low concentrations of trace elements and the boron concentration is between 10 - 100 ppm recorded only from the dull lithotypes. On the basis of organic petrology, the inter-seam sediments, flora and the very low concentration of boron, the depositional environment postulated for the coal is braided, fluvial and fluvio-lacustrine with marked fluctuations in the water table. The low water table in the environment accounts for fusain and inertodetrinite in the coal.

Stratiform lead-zinc mineralization in the Soldiers Cap Group and Kuridala Formation of the Mount Isa Inlier is closely associated with iron-rich sedimentary units or "iron formation", and has many similarities to the Broken Hill deposit in New South Wales. Both the Soldiers Cap Group and the Kuridala Formation have been intensively explored for deposits of this type since the early nineteen- seventies. A mineralized belt of at least eight significant prospects has been identified, of which the Pegmont deposit is the largest and best known example. In most cases the mineralized horizons contain banded galena and sphalerite within a gangue of predominantly quartz-garnet- pyroxene-amphibole rock, sometimes containing a variety of other metamorphic silicates, and apatite. Chemically, the mineralized horizons are distinguished by higher than usual levels of one or more of total Fe, MnO, CaO and P205. Interpretation of patterns of mineral- ization within the belt is based on the Pegmont deposit, where a model of base metal sulphide deposition within restricted basins of iron-rich chemical sediment has been developed (Stanton and Vaughan, 1979). Broadly, the model envisages the deposition of higher grade lead-rich mineralization in the basin centre position, lower grade zinc- rich mineralization in a basin intermediate position, and much weaker copper-rich mineralization in a basin edge position. These three positions reflect a laterally continuous arrangement of silicate microfacies within the original iron-rich sediment.

Systematic roof bolting in Australian coal mines began at Elrington Colliery in 19)49. Since that time the proportion of the roof supported by roof bolts has increased until, in 1970, 1.5 million were installed in Australian coal mines. This rapid growth of roof bolting has meant that the range and variety of roof bolting machines has altered also. The-number of machines now available both to bore holes and place roof bolts has increased. to the point where both rotary and per- cussive machines are used extensively. Generally, until the last four years, roof bolting machinery in Australia followed the practices in vogue in the United States. However, in -recent time the particular problems of Australian coal mining have necessitated the development of equipment primarily suitable to Australian conditions.

The economic feasibility of controlled district cross-cut recirculation is examined in this paper with particular reference to the most important mine ventilation network parameters. An algorithm is developed to express the annual cost of recirculation which is then compared to the annual cost of conventional ventilation using the University of Queensland Experimental Mine as a case study. The concepts of resistance ratio and volumetric efficiency ratio are introduced and used to analyse the economic feasibility of controlled recirculation within a mine ventilation network.

Four field test plots were constructed in 1998 on a sloped waste rock surface at the Myra Falls Operations of Boliden Westmin (Canada) Limited to evaluate hydraulic performance of alternate cover system designs. The field test plot cover systems were designed to control oxygen ingress and water infiltration to the underlying waste rock while providing a medium for a grass and legume vegetation cover. The test plots consisted of a bare waste rock surface (control plot), and three additional plots consisting of native compacted till placed directly on the waste rock surface, overlain by non-compacted till. Two of the test plots included a compacted till layer ameliorated with flyash and bentonite, respectively, to improve moisture retention and reduce permeability. The third test plot consisted of a compacted layer of native till overlain by non-compacted till. A performance monitoring system was installed in each test plot to evaluate net percolation and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock. In addition, each test plot has profiles of matric suction, water content, and temperature sensors installed at up-slope and down slope locations. A review of four years of monitoring data shows that the compacted till/bentonite cover system has been most successful in limiting the infiltration of meteoric waters and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock material. The compacted till/flyash and compacted till cover systems have produced similar net percolation results and neither have functioned well in maintaining an oxygen ingress layer throughout the year. The amelioration of bentonite with till to produce a compacted barrier layer shows promise in reducing water and oxygen ingress at the MFO site, while the incorporation of flyash with the till did not result in a significant increase in performance. The field performance data clearly demonstrates the need for developing field trials prior to full-scale construction, as opposed to relying solely on an un-calibrated numerical modelling to design the full-scale cover system.

In-situ experiments were performed in a tunnel built in loess soil with the displace- ment components of the tunnel lining and the acceleration components of the tracks measured during the passing of trains. The measured parameters were then studied by the spectral method. As a result, the dynamic forces of trains was simulated numerically and a deter- ministic dynamic nonlinear analysis was carried out by means of finite element method. The results obtained by two different approaches were in fair coincidence. Results of the study indicate, that the low and medium frequency components of the dynamic train loading would be crucial for the dynamic responses of the tunnel lining and surrounding mass, and their effects would increase with the speed of passing trains within a certain range.

The Argyle diamond mine is located in the East Kimberley area of Western Australia, some 100 km south of the town of Kununurra. The diamondiferous Argyle olivine-lamproite diatreme was discovered in August 1979. Production began in December 1985 at a planned throughput of 3 Mtpa to recover 25 million carats of diamonds. Presently, Argyle is the world's largest producer of natural diamonds and produced over 40 million carats in 1993 from seven million tonnes of lamproite ore treated. Two phases of evaluation have been carried out. The first in 1981-82 was designed to prove around 60 million tonnes of ore to justify the establishment of a mine with a minimum life of 20 years. The second phase, in 1989-90 involved drilling the orebody to greater depths to provide data on which to plan the final pit design. The final pit contained 120 million tonnes of ore at 5.3 carats per tonne (ct/t) grade. Mining of the planned pit will extend the mine life to around the year 2004, following which it is possible that a further cut-back could be mined. There is also the potential for future underground mining. A substantial amount of geotechnical work has been undertaken due to the fact that the pit will be nearly 500 m deep and is located in a mobile zone causing abnormally high residual stresses to occur in the pit walls. The occurrence of low strength rocks at depth in the pit walls further complicated the situation. Hydrogeological investigations were done to determine pit dewatering requirements and to assess the effect of dewatering on pit wall stability.

The occurrence of gold so finely divided as to be invisible under the microscope, even at magnificatioIl; of 1,200 to 2,000 diameters, is rare, but not unknow;n.. Burg (1930) has described an occurrence of such "invisible gold" from the 25/37 vein of the Bradisor mine at Brad in the Siebengeburgen district of Rumania (Transylvania), in which the pyrite contained up to 150 grams of gold per ton (approx. 5 oz. gold per ton). Hoffman (1931) has described an epithermal silver gold ore from the Titiribi district of Columbia (South America), in which "invisible gold" to the extent of 150 grams per ton occurred in the pyrite, arsenopyrite and zincblende; and Haycock (1937) has recorded it in pyrite from the Surf Point mine (Canada), which contained no visible gold, but yielded positive testsfor gold whenever samples drilled from polished surfaces of apparently homogeneous pyrite were tested spectrographically.The examination of a cyanided pyritic concentrate, together with a sample of the ore from which it' was prepared, from the Dolphin East lode at Vatukoula, Fiji, carried out as part of the programme of the Mineragraphic Section of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Australia, has established a further occurrence of "invisible gold" in pyrite and arsenopyrite. The Tom, East and West zone, stratiform Zn-Pb-Ag deposits at Macmillan Pass, Yukon, Canada were discovered by Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co Ltd prospectors in 1951. Further exploration, including two phases of underground exploration produced an HBM&S calculated reserve of 9.28 Mt of 7.5 per cent Pb, 6.2 per cent Zn and 69.4 g/T Ag for these zones. Cominco Ltd optioned the property in 1988. Deep, surface drilling extended the West and Southeast zones downward 200 - 300 m, indicating an additional potential resource of several million tonnes of good grade. The magnitude of the controlling syndepositional setting suggests that mineralisation continues to greater depth but with increased drilling and possibly mining costs. The 30 x 60 km Macmillan Fold belt trends WNW across the NW Selwyn Basin and Cordilleran trend. Within the fold belt, the Central Block - a complex, rift controlled basin of Devonian siliciclastics, hosts seven zones of Pb-Zn-Ag mineralisation clustered about four hydrothermal centres. The centres, distributed over 24 km, are coincident with small syndepositionally active structural sub-basins. The Tom deposits, in one such sub-basin, are localised by a third order structure consisting of two palaeobathymetric troughs flanking a syndepositional horst. This structure caused drastic facies and thickness changes over 600 metres of strata and focussed the venting of hydrothermal fluids through permeable conglomerates in the horst and its flanking growth faults. Mineral facies are zoned, with Pb-Ag contents rapidly diminishing outward from the vent resulting in restricted areas of high grade Pb-Zn-Ag-Ba ore within more extensive, sub-economic, Ba-Zn mineralisation. Widespread iron carbonate alteration of the footwall and high Si, B and Zn values in the hangingwall 'fingerprint' the deposit and along with the distinct facies variations provide aids to exploring the Tom and like deposits.

Social licence to operate is developed and kept through managing both operational impacts and the relationship between local community and company. However, CSIRO research has demonstrated that in determining how accepting community members are of a mining operation, relational factors, such as procedural fairness and trust, are much more important than operational impacts, such as impacts on employment and the environment (Moffat and Zhang, 2015). Companies seek to develop relational factors through their engagement with local community; such engagement has many aspects, including, initially identifying stakeholders and positioning the company as part of the local community (Lacey et al, in prep; Thomson and Boutlier, 2011). These relational factors involve the social identities of people living in the community. Social identities are a part of people that shape their beliefs, based on their connections with various groups in their lives (Hogg et al, 2004).An engagement process, intentionally or not, inevitably interacts with the social identities of stakeholders (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). For example, traditionally, at the very beginning of engagement processes, community members are assigned to categories using conventional stakeholder mapping and categorisation methods, often based on assumptions about stakeholders’ interests, which equates to assumptions about stakeholders’ social identities (Colvin, Witt and Lacey, 2016; International Council on Mining and Metals, 2012). Yet, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether such categories reflect the social identities of stakeholders and if there is a bearing on relational factors, including, the perceived fairness of consultations and trust in mining companies (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). Also at this time, companies commonly seek to create a presence in communities, for example, joining Chambers of Commerce and participating alongside community members. Again, there has been limited empirical inquiry into whether community members and companies identifying with the same overarching group and thus sharing aspects of social identity, influences relational factors (Crane and Ruebottom, 2011). In this study, we examined the effects of changing aspects of social identity by changing how stakeholders were identified and companies were positioned, on how stakeholders’ perceived a new mining operation, specifically how they perceived the procedural fairness of the proposed consultation process and trusted the company, two factors that underlie a company’s social licence to operate.CITATION:Carr-Cornish, S and Moffat, K, 2016. Large scale cut and fill mining in narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies began at Mount Isa in 1964. Initially each orebody was one stope and access was via raises from the level above. Upholing was the principal mining method, although flatbacking was employed where ground conditions were more difficult. Developments since have included access via footwall inclines and connection of all stopes with major crosscuts. Flatbacking is the principal method. The most recent cut and fill operation is now fully mechanised using drilling jumbos, rockbolting jumbos and load-haul-dump units. Improved ground support and drilling and blasting practices have enhanced safety, recovery and productivity in all cut and fill operations.

Rockbursts, as they occur in South African deep level gold mines, have a lot in common with natural earthquakes. Both violently release seismic energy and cause damage to underground and surface structures. Rockbursts are the main cause of fatalities in deep gold mines and the problem may increase in severity with future mining at greater depths. Although the emphasis in Rock mechanics is on the prevention of rockbursts, prediction would provide a partial solution to the rockburst problem. A research project was initiated in 1981 on Western Deep Levels to investigate the possibility of detecting and identifying precursive microseismic activity. This project has succeeded in locating potential sources of seismic events with reasonable confidence. The timing of these events may be estimated with less confidence, and an important parameter, namely the potential size of the rockburst, still cannot be determined. An example of a large seismic event and its associated precursive activity are discussed. Practical prediction systems will, at least for some time, involve subjective decision making which will place a new responsibility on the mine manager as well as the rockburst specialist. The moral pressure on the manager as the final decision maker will probably be greater than the fear of leqal prosecution.

The refractory industry in New Zealand is small, consisting of two main manufacturers - one at Huntly and the other at Kamo. Together these would have an annual refractory production of about 30 000 tonnes. The industries which use refractories include two steelworks, NewZealand Steel Limited and Pacific Steel Limited, the former is involved in continuous casting from sponge, iron and scrap steel and the latter is involved in ingot teaming from scrap steel and steel billets; One aluminium smelter, cement works, dairy companies, small foundries producing engineering requirements and many other small users. The New Zealand manufacturers produce refractories in thefire brick range, that is up to 50 per cent alumina content (ignited basis), based on indigenous raw materials and in the high alumina range up to 85 per cent alumina content (ignited basis) based on imported bauxites. All of the basic refractories high purity silica and high alumina low alkali refractories and many of the higher grade acid resisting refractories are imported.

Concentration ranges are presented for 15 trace elements not previously reported in Australian bituminous coals. The results were obtained by instrumental neutron activation analysis, which has sufficiently high sensitivity to enable determination of many elements directly in coal at concentrations less than a few µg/g. The ranges found in Australian coal are similar to the ranges reported in North American bituminous coals.

Rock-breaker automation and remote operation improves the safety and efficiency of mining operations. This paper presents an overview of the Rocklogic rock-breaker automation system architecture that provides collision avoidance, automated parking and remote operation functionality. The system consists of a distributed computer control system that interfaces with sensors attached to the rock-breaker, the rock-breaker hydraulics and the site infrastructure. We present results of an automated Transmin rock-breaker installed in a production environment at an underground Australian mine site. The system has been in production use for over 900 days, during which there have been no reported collisions and 100 per cent adoption of the remote operation technology. As a result, Rocklogic has significantly improved the safety of rock-breaking operations and reduced the rock-breaking cycle time, thereby improving the site’s overall throughput.CITATION:Boeing, A and Douglas, E, 2014. The South Mine, property of Broken Hill South Limited, is situated at Broken Hill, NSW, Australia, towards the southern end of the main lode. The leases (MLs 7 and 8) cover a length of 2400 feet along the lode outcrop and the workings extend, at this date, to a depth of 1940 feet below the collar of the original main shaft and to 825 feet below sea level. Mining operations have been continuous for about 58 years and during this period nearly 12.5 million tons of ore have been mined. The monthly tonnage extracted approximates 30 000 tons in normal times.The ore is a mixed sulphide containing galena and marmatite; the gangue minerals are principally calcite, rhodonite, quartz and garnet. A typical assay for a monthly period is 14.4 per cent Ph, 5.6 ozs Ag, and 11.6 per cent Zn. The whole of the ore is concentrated on the property by combined gravity and flotation methods. The lead and zinc concentrates produced are railed to other centres for the extraction of the contained metals.

The proportion of coal production from underground operations in Queensland, is likely to increase in the future. A portion of this increase will come from mines working under farming areas. The degree of compatibility between underground coal mining operations and farming is examined. Two case histories are considered in detail. These relate to farming areas in the Moura and Emerald districts. Mining the Moura, area has been undertaken for the last two and half decades, while in the Emerald area, large scale underground coal mining is currently being planned. Interference to watercourses and water harvesting programmes, damage to crops, and ponding in cultivated areas have been experienced in mining areas. With expansion of underground mining in farming areas, the principle areas of likely conflict are the effects of surface subsidence on irrigation and erosion control structures. Other potential problems that may arise in particular circumstances include reduction in availability of water for harvesting, pollution, surface cracking and damage to surface structures. Finely textured soils and erratic and violent rainfall patterns make farming in central Queensland particularly vulnerable to severe soil erosion unless strict precautions are taken. Soil erosion control is an essential part of farming. Contour banks are used to ensure that runoff velocities are suitably low. Where steep slopes are encountered, grassing is the most effective way to prevent erosion.

The economic viability of base metal and gold production projects at Chillagoe, North Queensland has been elusive or difficult to achieve. Because of isolation and low grades metallurgical efficiency has always been essential. This paper, concentrates on the Chillagoe Railway and Mines Company's operations from 1898 to 1914 and Elders Resources Limited's current developmental operations at Red Dome. The technological methods of concentrating, smelting and refining the copper, silver, lead and zinc by the Chillagoe Company will be outlined as well as their understanding of the geological aspects of the ore bodies and the stock market speculation. The Chillagoe Company failed in its economic management but developed the region. Elders Resources have successfully redeveloped the region including fostering the tourist potential of the area through their expert financial, engineering and metallurgical strategies within the external economic parameters of the Pacific Region.

In 1979, a test operation of an experimental blast furnace was carried out to investigate the behavior of a sort of formed coke, which was used safely by 30% of total coke charge in No.2 B.F., Sakai works, NSC, in 1975". The Mashec-type formed coke of 60 x 60 x 40 mm in dimension was crushed and screened so that it had the same size range (1011,20 mm) as ordinary coke used in the base operation. Preceding to the operation, some experiments on the properties of the formed coke and the effects of crushing on them were performed.
