The trend worldwide is for increasingly stringent control of sulphur dioxide emissions to the environment. It is therefore likely that Australian industry will be placed under increased pressure to restrict such emissions, and this will have implications for Australian smelters of mineral sulphide ores. Traditional outlets for sulphur dioxide emissions have been in sulphuric acid manufacture, but Australian demand for sulphuric acid has declined markedly in recent years. This paper examines the balance of supply and demand for sulphur and related products in Australia, the shifts occurring in that balance and the underlying causes of those trends.

The Bowen Basin of Central Queensland covers a total area of 3 200 000 ha. The Basin has proven reserves of about 24 000 000 tonnes of coking coal and steaming coal which constitutes about 70 percent of the known coal reserves in Queensland. Large scale open cut coal mining in the Bowen Basin commenced at Moura in 1959. There are now 16 open cut mines operating in the Basin and they collectively mine through about 3000 ha of land each year. Most of the land which has been mined has previously been used for extensive grazing. No mining has yet taken place on cropping land although coal reserves underlie land which has been cropped or has potential for cropping. The primary objectives of almost all of the mining companies operating in the Bowen Basin are to rehabilitate mined land to a stable and productive form which is compatible with surrounding land use which is dominantly grazing. The acceptability of these objectives is considered against the prospect of mining of cropping land and the qualified success of the return of rehabilitated land to grazing uses.

Grinding to sizes less than 80 per cent passing 20 ¦m in both primary and regrind circuits is becoming increasingly important in processing metalliferous ores, as many of the remaining orebodies are very fine-grained and refractory. The process of very fine grinding, however, is expensive, and neither the performance nor the design criteria are well understood. This paper presents some findings from a collaborative research program, one of the objectives of which has been to better understand and improve the performance of very fine grinding circuits. Data from surveys of an industrial tower mill grinding circuit are reviewed and analysed using the population balance models of the CS]RO and 7KMRC. The performance of both models with regard to changes in feed size distribution, ball load and feedrate is assessed using these data. From comparisons between pilot and full scale tower mill operation a prototype scaling methodology is also presented which shows promise in allowing the models to be used to predict the effect of changes in mill Design.

Basing upon many and long practical experiences of gas drainage from coal seam and results investigations on the gas flow through in si-tu coal seam using tracer gases,it became clear that solid coal itself is hardly gas permeable or has extremely low gas permeability. Almost all of gas flows from a coal seam into boreholes through fracture net- works intersecting with them.Primary and secondary fractures in coal seams differ in their size and continuity from place to place according to differences of the coal strength and the stress conditions. A lot of gas can be drained through boreholes which intersect with many and/or wide fractures. A mathematical model for gas flow from a coal seam to a borehole through a discoidal fracture is proposed. From the numerical analyses,the apparent radius of the discoidal fracture in this model is shown to be a good indication of the gas drainage ratio. In addition to this,an atempt to make fractures around a borehole using high velocity water jet(ca.lmm dia.,300-700atm., 100-200 1/min.) is introduced.

The Yinachang deposit in south-west China contains large amounts of Fe, Cu and rare earth elements (REEs). Apatite in this deposit records complex REE mineralisation and remobilisation processes.Fe-Cu-(REE) mineralisation at Yinachang occurred at ~1700 Ma, and three stages of alteration and mineralisation are identified: Na-(Fe) alteration, Fe-(REE) mineralisation and Cu-(REE) mineralisation. In the Fe-(REE) mineralisation stage, REE-rich apatite formed together with magnetite. In the Cu-(REE) mineralisation stage, fluids undersaturated with REEs interacted with early-formed REE-rich apatite, during which large proportions of REEs, especially light REEs (LREEs), were leached from apatite.At ~840 Ma, apatite experienced a second interaction with fluid. In that process, REEs were removed from the apatite structure but immediately reprecipitated into new phases within the apatite. Thus, numerous REE mineral inclusions including bastnaesite, monazite and minor Y-phosphate occur in the apatite. There are also a very small portion of LREEs that were transported out of the apatite, resulting in the growth of bastnaesite and monazite grains outside the apatite.This study demonstrates that REEs can be mobilised in multistage hydrothermal activities and highlights the significance of fluid compositions for REE transportation and deposition behaviours in hydrothermal systems.CITATION:Li, X and Zhou, M-F, 2015. The use of Non-Linear Programming to obtain improved schedules of future activity in two specific cases of mining and treatment of minerals is described. The two cases were (i) reclamation of gold, uranium and sulphur from old surface tailings dams and, (ii) underground mining of gold. The method used an augmented Lagrangian device to reduce a constrained Non-Linear Programme to a sequence of unconstrained hill- climbing procedures. The main advantages of the method appear to be those of (a)flexibility of modelling of industrial characteristics and constraints and, (b) reasonably modest computation times.

Commercial or potentially commercial deposits of coal occur in Australia in strata ranging in age from Permian to Tertiary. The coals of each period tend to show a community of petrographic character and significant differences as compared with coals of other ages. In particular- many of the Permian coals are unusually rich in inertinite whereas the Jurassic and Tertiary coals are typically very rich in vitrinite. The majority of the coals show evidence of deposition in environments subject to relatively minor marine influence. Except for some Tertiary and Permian coals the content of mineral matter tends to be high. Outcrops of coals of bituminous rank appear to be largely restricted to the eastern margin of the Australian continent. In this region vertical rank gradients are generally higher than in the other sedimentary basins and uplift and the removal of cover has occurred to a greater extent. To the west of the Tasman geosyncline, coal of bituminous rank generally occurs at considerable depths (usually in excess of 1 km and in some areas only at depths of over 2 kms), and in most areas coals at shallow depth are of sub-bituminous or brown coal rank. The controls of the distribution of coal type and rank have considerable economic significance and the unusual characteristics of Australian coals, especially with respect to coal type, make the direct application of overseas technology to Australian coals inappropriate.

This paper describes the requirements for concrete in this application, the required properties, the mix design, and transportation and placement systems. The mining industry views with the utmost concern, legislative or administrative action that inherently reduces the scope for exploration activity. Is there any basis for this concern in relation to Victoria? This paper will outline the role of the Department of Minerals and Energy and the main features of legislative provisions affecting exploration effort. The practical difficulties that confront the Department and explorers alike will be examined. The importance of industry representation to influence the direction that policy and legislative review might take, will be highlighted. Above all, the paper will establish that one essential duty of government is to ensure the provision of appropriate mining titles and security of tenure.

When it comes to sampling theory, a bad sampler is a bad sampler, no matter what, and a sampler is either bad or good. It also is of critical economic importance to tell and understand the difference, especially in a metallurgical plant. In this paper, the grand principles of Sampling Theory are first recalled, then the most popular types of sample cutters for plants are critically reviewed. It is concluded that the industry has a lot of progress to make in that direction, although improvements usually pay for themselves very quickly.

In large-scale mining, large-sized intermediate pillars, or block-pillars, are generated on the horizon or between closely located mines. These pillars are mined under high rock pressure that results from the stress concentration zones superposition from closely located working excavations. This problem becomes much more complicated if high tectonic stresses occur in the rock mass inducing a rock-burst risk situation. Mining experience gained in mining seven block-pillars at three Khibiny mines in Russia under the geomechanical situation like that described aboveÆ is discussed in detail. It has been shown how safe mine of block-pillars depends on their width, location relative to significant geological failures and uncaved rocks of the hanging wall, the order of pillar recovery, and application of special measures for rock mass stress relieving. Basing on the analysis of the mining experience and special scientific researches, the basic principles are worked-out for safe block-pillar mining under rock-burst prone conditions.

Precipitation of inorganic compounds or metals from aqueous solutions can either be physical (crystallisation) or chemical in nature. Chemical processes are varied; they may be due to hydrolytic action, due to ionic interaction, or due to reduction (ie transfer of electrons). Transfer of electrons in reduction processes may take place homogeneously or heterogeneously. In the first case it may be ionic or nonionic in nature. Heterogeneous processes may be electrochemical or electrolytic. Examples of interest to hydrometallurgy are given.

In order to realise seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) mining, the environmental baseline survey around targeted SMS mining areas and the creation of an environmental assessment technique suitable for quantifying the impacts of ocean floor mining are necessary. The targeted areas generally host large chemosynthetic communities in association with active hydrothermal venting. The ecosystem structure around the chemosynthetic communities has not been clarified yet in macro-scale or quantitatively. The systematic approach and plan for the baseline survey and the environmental assessmentÆs basic studies are introduced. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. There are many factors influencing the way in which a mining company disposes of tailings. Some of the more important factors include physical and chemical properties of tailings, cost, availability of dam wall construction materials, type of mining operation, topography and environmental constraints. As a result, the mining industry has seen a diverse and innovative range of disposal methods developed to satisfy the many conditions imposed at tailings disposal sites. This paper discusses a range of tailings disposal methods currently practiced in the mining industries in North America. These methods include various inpit disposal techniques, upstream, downstream and centreline dam construction and zoned earthfill or rockfill embankment construction. The thickened tailings disposal method and the disposal of fine clays are discussed. The importance of improving the depositional properties of tailings to enhance storage capacity, water reclaim, dam wall stability and final reclamation is stressed. It is important that mining companies are made aware of the full range of disposal methods and dam construction techniques available today. Such an awareness will help improve the planning, design and construction of safer and more efficient tailings disposal facilities in the future.

The need to prevent the sterilisation of coal stems directly from the fact that it is a non-renewable resource. In N.S.W. a vast amount of coal resource is located under major public utilities such as freeways, railways, stored waters, pipelines carrying gas, water and sewage, and transmission lines. Total extraction has occurred under freeways, transmission lines and pipelines with little or no damage. Where damage has resulted, the cost of restoration was only a small fraction of the value of the coal recovered. However, coal at present is being sterilised and perhaps lost for ever under stored waters and railways. If engineering solutions are available for mining under these improvements economically and with maximum safety, then coal should be extracted and utilised to the benefit of the State.

Vibration of surface caused by seismic quakes can make a risk to great mining costruction. We have to do with this risk in the Belchatow open cut mine where seismic quakes of various energy and range have occured since the end of 1970s. The seismic risk influence on the mine structure with the special attention to the slopes of an internal dump has been presented. Hydrogeological and geotechnical conditions of the lignite mining and internal dumping of overburden and ash from Belchatow power plant have been considered. Seismic activity in Belchatow open cut from 1979 to 2001 was described and the connection between mine working and seismicity of this area was investigated. The energy and approximate location of the quakes and seismological parameters of the strongest ones observed from 1995 to 2001 were presented. The mechanism of the quake focuses was determined by means of the primary-arriving wave method. Stability of the slopes was evaluated by means of the Fellenius method. It has been found that seismic events occured in Belchatow region may cause only local eboulements whereas there are not any safety risks to the stability of slopes of the internal dump in Belchatow open cut.

Gold mining in Waihi spans three centuries and five generations. Following the discovery of gold in 1878 the Martha Mine was developed and the town of Waihi grew up around it. Now, five generations later, descendents of many of the original settler families continue to live and work in Waihi. Many have returned to mining, in jobs far removed from those of their parents or grandparents.   Members of three local families were interviewed on video. This paper is a summary of some of the major themes and gives some insight into the role gold mining played in the development of the region and its continued its importance today.

Mining Engineering Degree programs have traditionally had a practical emphasis and have been highly vocational in nature. However, over the years, there has been an increasing attention to the more scientific aspects of the discipline. More recently, the professional institutions, the industry and the community at large have placed increasing emphasis on the broader aspects of the professions: management, finance, humanity, environment and social issues. Notwithstanding this, there has been a continuing emphasis on the practicalities, and most Mining Engineering programs are still strongly vocational in nature. But employers of new graduates complain about the graduatesÆ lack of practicality and readiness for employment æat the sharp endÆ on the mine site.This paper briefly describes some of the more recent developments in the Mining Engineering Degree program at the University of Queensland that attempt to address the problem. Particular attention is paid to alternative learning programs, including applications of virtual reality, practical experience at the University Experimental Mine (UQEM), and the Undergraduate Site Learning Program (USLP).
