We offer these notes as a practical contribution. All the arguments we advance have been tested by practical experience.In its preparation we realised that our subject was one of such importance and covered so wide a field that, dealt with by one of us alone, it might easily have been too much for him, so we have endeavoured, by mutual criticism and advice and a pooling of ideas, to bring forward a few points that may be of advantage to members. If any of the paper is of benefit to mining on the "Golden Mile," or elsewhere, we shall feel amply repaid for our efforts.It is obvious to all that the longer the machine is working productively per shift the greater the return, to all concerned; the machine-man himself and the company. Furthermore, if a man commences a shift with a definite objective in view; for instance, to bore and fire a specific cut, which he recognizes will give him a good financial return, then that man will exercise all his capabilities to attain that objective.In this paper we hope to demonstrate the value to the machine-man of the knowledge of the capabilities of each hole he bores, so that he will be enabled to utilize his drilling time to the greatest advantage. Also, we hope to show that such drilling time can be advantageously extended.After the war, with the influx of new men to the industry, some education on the finer points of machine work may be desirable, and any instruction in this branch must stress the realization of the value of each hole.We realise that most of those present have a sound workable knowledge of machine-mining, and we are not trying to teach anyone the fundamentals of machine work, but we would like to bring to their attentIon some of the finer points which we believe are very important.The machine-man has control of gear of a capital value of over £150, and the use or misuse of that material has a direct bearing on working costs. Therefore it is imperative that the capital outlay is gainfully employed.A "bogger" in charge of a 5/- shovel engaged unproductively is bad enough. How much worse for £150 worth of gear to be not fully productive.Figs. 1 and 2 demonstrate angles of break, and the full realization of the importance of this angle is essential to our paper. Although these Sketches are two-dimensional, we hope they will be sufficient to demonstrate our meaning. We will pass over them as briefly as possible.Fig. 1 shows three holes asked to perform an identical task.(a) 7-ft. hole bored 2 ft. into solid ground-will not come out.(b) 4-ft. hole bored 1 ft. from solid ground-will come out easily.(c) 5-ft. hole bored to solid ground-the best that can be expected under general conditions encountered.The angle of break is a right-angle, normal to direction of hole.

The Bau Goldfield lies in the southwestern corner of Sarawak in East Malaysia. Evidence of past mining in the form of open pits and adits can be found over an area of 250 sq kin, centred on the township of Bau. Chinese were mining gold in the district as early as 1820. The Bau Goldfield so far has produced approximately two million ounces of gold, from alluvial deposits and over 50 hard rock mines. The largest single producer was the Tai Parit mine (700 000 oz) which was operated by the Borneo Company from 1898 to 1921 and by a local Malaysian family from 1991 to early-1997. Over the past ten years, gold resources totalling around one nullion ounces have been delineated through systematic exploration using modern techniques, with the bulk of the resource hosted in two deposits (Jugan and Pejiru).Triassic to Jurassic andesitic volcanics and coeval intrusives are the oldest rocks that crop out in the Bau Goldfield. These igneous basement rocks are unconformably overlain by 500 m of late Jurassic, massive, micritic limestone which in turn is overlain by a 1500 in thick flysch sequence, composed mainly of shale. Basement rocks and limestone are exposed along the hinge of a ENE-striking anticline that passes through the Bau district (Bau Anticline). A NNE-striking belt of Miocene granodiorite porphyry stocks and dykes also passes through the Bau Goldfield. All of the known gold deposits lie within 5 km of this zone of intnisives, with a concentration of deposits at the intersection of the intrusive hell with the Rau Anticline.

It is a great pleasure to accept the invitation to open this Joint Conference of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers. It is the second invita- tion to participate in the Conference that I have accepted. When it was being planned, the President wrote to me to invite me to be one of the speakers in one of the technical sessions. I wrote accepting the invitation, and when my present appointment was announced, there was a nice question about the earlier commitment. The upshot of it all is revealed by the present arrange-., ment: you get me as opener and the more sub- k stantial speech is to be given by Professor Rupert Myers, my friend and former colleague who will not only be able to contribute from the standpoint of an experienced University admini- strator, but will also speak from a professional training and experience much more closely relat- ed to the concerns of this Conference than I possess. Though it is a joint meeting and the speakers will include distinguished figures from North America, I hope that since the venue is Australia, I may be permitted to speak with an Australian emphasis. I have recently had a brief glimpse of part of the Australian mining industry. In the course of a journey through the Northern Terri- tory we-my wife and I-visited Gove, Groote Eylandt, and Tennant Creek. At Gove we saw the remarkable Nabalco development in bauxite and alumina and the very impressive town plan- ning development at Nhulunby, the major man- ganese enterprise at Groote Eylandt, and the gold mining activity at Tennant Creek. For lay people like us, a gold pour was arranged at Tennant Creek and that was a spectacular sight. On earlier occasions, and before my present appoint- ment, I had visited Mount Isa and the Utah fields, and Queensland Alumina at Gladstone. I have not seen the cradle of the modern mining industry, using cradle perhaps loosely, at Broken Hill, nor have I seen the great Pilbara develop- ment, nor Weipa. This is not for want of generous invitations and it is my hope that within the not too far distant future this will be rectified. Then there is the Australian petroleum industry and the great industries which make their products from the minerals mined which I have yet to See.

With the use of 36 rock drills of the jackhammer type at the West Lyell Open Cuts of the Mt Lyell Mining & Railway Co, it is of importance to determine the economic as well as the physical life of these machines. With this purpose in mind records have been kept of the footage bored and the cost of new parts placed in each machine, and the following procedure adopted.A graph is plotted for each machine showing the footage bored as a horizontal line and at each 5000 feet of boring the total cost of new parts is noted on this line (see Figure 1). Thus at a glance it is possible to see the amount of work done by each machine and the money spent on it in new parts. However, it is difficult to visualise from this graph the increase in the cost of new parts for each machine as its life advances. To obviate this clifficulty a curve is plotted with the cost of new parts as the vertical component and the distance bored as the horizontal component.As before the cost of new parts are taken at each 5000 feet bored (see Figure 2).

The CSIRO acid alumina employs the essential steps of digestion, hydrolysis and calcination to produce pure alumina from ores too high in silica or too low in grade for the Bayer process. The two latter stages have been described in some detail previously but the digestion stage requires separate dis-cussion since ores vary widely in composition and reactivity. Kaolinitic clays require. roasting to 8000C to render the alumina soluble in the 11 per cent sulphuric acid used in the process while some ferruginous laterites require roasting to reduce the reactivity of iron minerals. The iron content of pregnant solutions is kept at a low figure by digesting at temperatures where the solubilities of ferric oxide or basic ferric sulphates are small. A.two-stage, counter-current digestion is necessary to extract a high percentage of alumina from the ores and to pro-duce a basic pregnant liquor, with an S03:Al203 ratio of 1. 9 suitable for high temperature hydrolysis. The second stage of digestion, called the modification stage, treats slightly acid liquors with exces's of ore in the temperature range 1200- 1400C. The first stage operates at 1700-190 C to extract further alumina from modification residues, using recycled acid obtained from later steps of the process. Both temperature ranges are critical for economic operation and for proper con-trol of the iron content of solutions. In batch experiments, thirty minutes is regarded as a suitable retention time for digestion and modification; ores which require much longer than this are less suitable for the process. Impurities. such assilica, titanium and vanadium oxides are discarded in the residue along with iron oxide and do not contaminate the final product. Bivalent metallic sulphates such as MgSO4 can build up in the circuit to a very considerable degree without affecting. product purity.Comparison with other processes shows that the C. S. I. R. O. process is superior for control of contamination by iron, which is the major problem in acid processes. The pure intermediate product (3 A1203. 4 S03. 9 H2O) is also more convenient for cal-cination to alumina than the hydrated aluminium sulphate usually recovered in other processes. Detailed cost comparisons must await pilot-plant evaluation of the C. S. I. R. O. process.

The selective recovery of gold and silver from solutions containing other metals, such as copper, is possible using AuRIX«100 resin in conjunction with the Gekko Resin Column. Selectivity is driven by controlling the solution pH, which enables activities such as loading copper, gold and silver and then selectively stripping copper before gold and silver. Alternatively gold and silver can be loaded and the copper left in solution. The selective loading of gold while reducing the silver loading has also been demonstrated, opening the possibility of producing high grade gold dorT from high grade silver pregnant leach solutions. This paper reviews the AuRIX«100 resin and Gekko Resin Column Technologies, discusses the uses of AuRIX«100 in the recovery of gold and silver and the chemistry relating to several projects for which AuRIX«100 is being tested.

The implementation of the Mining Further Amendment) Act, 1970, and later the Coal Mining Act, 1973, placed a requirement on the Department of Mines to accept an initiative in relation to coal exploration and coal mine development which does not apply in the case of other minerals. It is necessary to consider the exploration of the total coal resources of the State when considering exploration rather than one individual basin or deposit. If the level of knowledge of the coal resources in these basins is considered in relation to their potential for development it is possible to allocate broad scale priorities to their assessment. Due to the enormity of the task which involves a conservative estimate of in excess of 400 000 m of drilling to reach a broad reconnaissance level of understanding the involvement of industry with the Department in the exploration programme is necessary. Major occurrences of platinum group minerals (PGM) are in crustally-contaminated, huge, layered igneous complexes (Bushveld and Stillwater) and gabbroic intrusions (Norilsk); relatively minor occurrences include arc-related æzoned Alaskan ultramaficsÆ. In terms of arc-related provenances, the recognition of alluvial PGM in river and beach deposits of southern South Island (Mitchell, 1995), in situ in the Longwoods (Cowden et al, 1990), and the ultramafic-mafic layered Greenhills Complex at Bluff (Spandler et al, 2000) raise the possibility that some economically-significant PGM deposits may exist in New Zealand. The Longwoods and Greenhills are in the Brook Street Terrane which is a remnant of a primitive intra-oceanic arc system of Late Permian-Early Triassic age. The Terrane comprises volcanogenic sequences containing plagioclase- and clinopyroxenephyric basalts, high-MgO ankaramite and dolerite dikes, trondhjemite plutons, and basaltic to andesitic volcaniclastic and sedimentary rocks. The cumulate complexes contain early-formed olivine- and clinopyroxene-rich ultramafic cumulates overlain by anorthite and hornblende-bearing gabbros. Primary (isoferroplatinum) and secondary (sperrylite) platinum group minerals are preserved in chrome-rich spinel pods in basal dunite of the Greenhills Complex. Saturation during early fractionation of primitive high-MgO magmas rather than magma mixing seems likely for the primary PGM. Together with correlative terranes in Queensland and New Caledonia, the Brooks Street Terrane is an exposed cross-section of an extensive Permo-Triassic island-arc system. Most parental magmas were primitive island-arc tholeiites, but other primary magma-types include high-MgO ankaramites and trondhjemites û the latter formed by partial melting of lower crustal clinopyroxene-rich cumulates and gabbros, respectively. The parental ankaramites fractionated to form mafic-ultramafic cumulates and primitive to evolved melts of high-Al basalt to andesite compositions (Takitimus). The Brook Street Terrane is an analogue for modern intra-oceanic islandarc systems and allows detailed study of subvolcanic arc processes.

THE following paper is a description of the plant and operations of the above company in their recovery and treatment of the quartz tailings deposited as final residues by the various mining companies. at Waihi, Karangahake, and Waitekauri into theOhinemuri River. During the past few years the silting of the Ohinemuri River has increased to such an extent as to cause considerable interest and discussion, and has lately been the subject of a most extensive inquiry by a Royal Commission, to consider the best means of dealing with what is generally spoken of as a public nuisance.Ever since the commencement of mining in this district, which was opened as a goldfield in 1875, the various mines operating have been discharging their tailings into this river, it having been proclaimed a sludge channel in 1895. Up to the year 1900 the quantity of quartz crushed was not large, probably not exceeding 500,000 tons; but since that date the annual tonnages discharged have increased enormously, and at the present time would total from 550,000 to 600,000 tons per year. Records show that up to the end of 1910 at least 5,000,000 tons have been crushed, for an actual yield of bullion considerably exceeding £10,000,000 in value, and all the valuable tailings from...

Kobe is divided by the Rokko Mountains, runn- ing from east to west. The southern section of Kobe is highly developed in contrast with the northern section, but big, new residential pro- jects like the Hokusetsu New Town and Hokushin New Town are steadily being developed. To handle future traffic between the two sections of the city, the double-tracked Hokushin Line, now under construction, will connect the Shin Kobe Station of the Kobe Municipal Transit (Kobe's subway system) to the Tanigami Station of the Kobe Electric Railway. The locations of Kobe city and Hokushin Line are shown in Fig.-1 and Fig.-2 respectively.

Economies in cemented fill demand the utilisation of the full potential of the portland cement component of the mix. If declined tailings are used, it is desirable to establish the optimum particle size distribution. Pozzolic materials and slags are. very useful additions to increase the amount of cementitious material through reaction with calcium hydroxide produced by hydration of the cement. It is also essential to check out the presence of substances which may seriously affect the setting and hardening of the cement or the durability of the cement bond. The importance of quality control in the preparation of cemented fill cannot be over Emphasised.

During the post war era, the requirements of the "Third" World for modern civil works, energy and industry, coupled with an insistence that these capital installations are understood and controlled by indigenous people, have crea- ted a demand and flow of technology from those countries with well developed skills. Thus has grown a real trade in technology - an activity in which consultants play an important role. An indication of the magnitude of this trade is given, together with an outline of some of the special problems. Australia is shown to be dis- advantaged and has been slow to offer the incen- tives to consultants which other countries offer.

Dominion Mining Ltd. and the JKMRC have conducted a detailed investigation of the performance of two of Dominion Mining's gold treatment plants (Haveluck and Paddy's Flat). In terms of design each plant is considerably different. The Paddy's Flat plant uses a single stage SAG mill with recycle crusher, followed by single stage ball milling. The Haveluck plant uses the more traditional approach of multi-stage crushing and ball milling. The performance of these two plant designs in terms of energy efficiency and cost of comminution equipment, developed at the JKMRC, to accurately predict both power draw and size reduction characteristics at these plants is evaluated.

Technical applications of computers within the coal industry are expanding rapidly with an increase in the number of users and user locations. Collinsville Coal Company Pty Ltd is an example of a remote and growing user company which has a Telecom link to MIM's ICL mainframe computer in Brisbane. The Planning Department is one of the technical user departments at Collinsville, with a variety of VDU, plotting and screen graphics hardware supported by the MIM Computing network. Current applications involve the storage, retrieval and manipulation of borehole information, plan and map production, volume calculations from survey data and mine ventilation modelling for underground Operations.

The microstructures exhibited by ilmenite in its association with other oxide minerals have been the subject of a number of papers, the most comprehensive of which is that by Ramdohr. The following observations in some degree extend his conclusions. They are based upon a study of about sixty specimens of "massive" ilmenite and titaniferous ores from a number of wIdely 'scattered Australian localities. Specimens of this character proved much rarer than was expected. The collection was gathered together through the generous aid of the University Geological Departments, Geological Surveys, and Natural History Museums of the several States of the Commonwealth, all of which contributed such specimens of local origin, as they possessed. Croesus Shaft is one of two operating shafts on North Kalgurli Mines Limited's Fimiston lease.At the cessation of gold mining in 1974, the workings at Croesus were allowed to flood. Large quantities of deslimed mill tailings used in filled stopes were washed into the shaft and surrounding drives, making re-access very difficult. The shaft has been desludged from the 9 level to the 15 level, and a loading pocket installed below the 14 level. A vacuum lift unit was installed underground to facilitate the removal of the slime and spillage.Stoping at Croesus was hampered by poor drainage, pumping, and shaft availability. These difficulties have been overcome by utilising an open stoping system for the relatively steep, narrow, high grade stopes. Open stoping has proved to be effective and economic.

How do you initiate closure planning for a mine site that is on the doorstep of a major community without generating the extremes of panic or complacency? That is the question that is faced by Australia's largest gold mine, the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Super Pit in Kalgoorlie-Boulder. KCGM's Community Relations Manager, Danielle van Kampen, will reveal the lengthy closure planning process that is in train to alert yet not alarm the community about the future of the Super Pit and to generate discussion on issues of importance. What will happen to the 'big hole' that generates both mining and tourism dollars for the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder as its anticipated closure date of 2021 comes closer? How do you communicate a constantly evolving closure date? Although the process may generate more questions than answers, the project will be discussed at length and with the added benefit of independent community recent research in the form of the public 2009 Closure Consultation and the KCGM 2010 Social Impact Assessment. Three major and two minor uranium deposits 'have been worked by open out mining since the discovery of ,the Rum Jungle field in 1949. Total production has been about 9679000 tons of uranium ore at 7;39 lb U308/ton and 4029000 tons of copper-uranium ore at 6.27 lb U308/ton and 2.7% Cu, with significant tonnages of base'metal ores. The deposits occur in or near black pyritic slates of the Lower Proterozoic Golden Dyke Formation, near the contact with the under- lying Coomalie Dolomite. The mineralization is probably younger than the grahite complexes in the area, and a structural-stratigraphic control of ore deposition is used as a basis for uranium exploration.\

THIS paper is not intended to be more than a mere outline of the economic geology of Tasmania. It is desired to present in a condensed form the present state of our knowledge in regard to the distribution of the ore, coal, and oil-shale deposits of Tasmania in time and space.Tasmania is exceptionally well endowed with mineral wealth, particularly in the north-western and western districts. In the enthusiasm resulting from the first discoveries of mineral deposits at a great number of localities in those districts, it became a generally accepted belief that the whole of that portion of Tasmania constituted a continuous metalliferous province. As geological research in these, areas has progressed, however, it has become increasingly clear that ore-deposition has been confined on an economic scale to definite well-defined areas or belts which have a genetic relationship to certain tectonic and petrologic phases of the general geology. Improvements in mining by the application of electronics necessitates analy-sis of the objectives and problems. A detailed analysis has shown that increased tunel-ling performance is one of the most important objectives. In mining, the environmental conditions for machines, their handling and servicing are very hard. Therefore a health monitoring system for tunnelling machines in hazardous areas has been developed. This system measures operational parameters, such as-flow, pressure, temperature, etc., de-rives forecasts of possible failures from these values, and assists maintenance person-nel. Important data are transmitted to a surface computer via telephone cables. Health monitoring is based on the cognition that slow deterioration of characteristic parame-ters, e.g. fluid loss, are symptoms of wear. Sudden changes of machine parameters indi-cate sudden destruction. Computer technology is very advanced, but transducer technolo-gy has not,been able to keep pace. Filling the yawning gap in the mining industry is a challenge to technology and requires special techniques. Machine monitoring and automa-tion in underground mining is still in its infancy. A lqt of development and research work is still necessary. The risks are great-The expected benefit due to increased min-ing performance (up to 5 %) justifies the risks in development.
