The development of the Moura Coal Preparation Plant is described, commencing with the first'stage of the plant commissioned in 1963. The subsequent expansion stages are traced through to October, 1973. The plant has undergone frequent stages of expansion and modification and this process is continuing. The development programme for 1974 is described as proposed in late 1973. The characteristics of the Moura and Kianga field coal seams with respect to washability are summarised and some comment is made on the blending of these coals prior to washing, to ensure production of export grade coal within specification.

This paper describes preliminary research on the application of Markov Decision Processes (MDP) to Real Option Valuation (ROV) and the optimisation of mine scheduling. The MDP framework is a novel approach to option valuation and scheduling in mining operations. A learning agent is introduced into the valuation process of an open pit, where prices and block ore grades have probabilistic values. The prices are modelled using a mean reverting diffusion process and the block grades using sequential Gaussian simulation. The agent is asked to learn which production parameters should be used in order to maximise the overall value of the project. The introduction of the agent permits a real option approach to mine valuation, such that the value associated with the robustness of a design to uncertainty can be measured. A simulated example is used in which there are ten blocks to be extracted under conditions of grade and price uncertainty. Using policy iteration, an optimal policy is generated and the value of production options is found. The potential financial gains from applying MDPs to mine valuation and optimisation are substantial and warrant further investigation.

Plenary SpeechI have given considerable thought about what I might say to such a group of professionals, given that I am not an extractive metallurgist. It was immediately apparent that I would quickly be out of my depth if I tried to present some technical aspect of extractive metallurgy. So, instead I thought it might be useful to review the subject from the minerals business management point of view in order to improve understanding for the extractive metallurgist who some times finds it difficult to comprehend directions being given by management.

The effect of operating parameters of a shaking table on the separation of mixed quartz-magnetite artificial feed has been experimentally investigated by use of laboratory-scale shaking table. Based on a great number of experimental data collected, the multi-variate non-linear model of shaking table has been developed. The model allows for the calculation of the product grade and recovery. A computer model has been programmed, for inclusion in a software package for the simulation and optimisation of shaking table if the feed characteristics and the concentrate grade are given.

A system of decline mine entries and ore haulages has been designed for the Mt. Windarra mine. This choice was controlled by the nature of the ore- bodies, the mining method chosen and the capital cost of development re- quired for production. Mine entries are being driven 4 metres high and 5.5 metres wide and decline at 11%, to accommodate diesel haulage vehicles of 35 tonnes capacity. The.Mount Windarra haulage system and the design parameters used in its selection and design are discussed, and general design and selection parameters are proposed.

Data logged on mineral beneficiation processes during normal operation are analysed using time series (correlation and spectral) methods to identify the dynamics of the processes for on-line computer control. Recursive least squares estimation techniques are used to identify parametric models for a cassiterite flotation circuit and a coal washery. Identification problems such as the determination of model order, process time delays and the 'contamination' of the data by process recycle streams (feedback) are discussed. Typical results are presented in which optimised models are identified from data logged during normal operation.

Just what are the problems/issues of access to lands today? What is being done about them? What can be achieved? What is practical to achieve? North Stradbroke Island is a large sand mass offshore from south east Queensland. Dredging for mineral sands commenced there in 1956 and the rehabilitation discussed in this paper was commenced in 1967. The frontal dunes have a long history of instability, with little vegetation prior to mining. Re-establishment of the naturally stable contours is essential, and their rehab- ilitation is described. Vegetated high dunes present different problems requiring attention to regeneration of the native species. Methods developed over the past eight years are proving successful.,

To those who have been engaged in the construction of mining and metallurgical plants during the war and post-war periods, it is quite unnecessary to point out the large increases and violent fluctuations in prices of basic commodities and the steady and persistent rise in labour costs. It may, however, be of interest to present these facts in graphic form, and survey the relative heights of the various maxima and the lead and lag of individual waves. Since Descartes demonstrated for us moderns the analogy between geometric form and algebraic statements, the two-dimensional graph has found widespread application. Mathematicians have developed for our information, if not for our confusion, the triangular diagram and the solid three-dimensional figures, which have proved so useful, at least in the hands of the metallurgists at Port Pirie. The model (Plate 1.) which is exhibited here does not pretend however, to indicate the connection between any three inter-related variables, and it is not proposed to burden members with any abstruse mathematical expression for the irregular surface of the blocks. While time is an ordinate common to all sections of the model, each illustrates separately the variation in cost of some particular quantity between the years 1914 and 1922. It is an easy matter to record such individual variations, but it would be an impossible task to state any equation describing accurately the dependence ot the prices, say, of hardwood or of galvanized iron upon that of labour at any particular point of time. The cost of living curve, which has attained such prominence, if not notoriety, in the last few years, is the result of an attempt to show the mass-effect of the components. It is the difficulty found in "assigning the correct weight to the separate items which makes the aggregate curve somewhat misleading at times.Turning to the model, it will be noticed that each section consists of half a dozen pegs.. The first in each row,that coloured red, represents the cost of some particular quantity, such as bricks, timber or coal, at Broken Hill in 1914. Results are presented of the investigation of gas dynamics of the blast furnace process obtained on laboratory models and operating furnaces. Gas residence times were measured using a helium tracer technique developed for the purpose. Residence times were determined in furnaces of 1007 m3 and 1719 m3 and results used in the calculation of the burden parameters and to estimate the distribution of the gas flow along the furnace radius. The effect of tuyere injection of coal dust on gas distribution was also investigated and the advantage of continuous injection compared with intermittent injection is noted. The unevenness of gas distribution across the furnace area is found to correlate well with differences in the size analysis of the iron-bearing component of the burden. The mixing of the gas streams between the neighbouring raceways was studied. It is shown that in the central region of the furnace gases from every tuyere are mixed together, whilst in the peripheral regions mixing is more localised and includes only the sections consisting of five adjacent tuyeres. A solution is proposed to the problem of a theoretical evaluation of the critical gas velocity. A simple relationship between the Reynolds and the Archimedes numbers was obtained from which, after substitution of the burden size data and the gas parameters, it is -possible to evaluate the critical gas velocity. Conclusions include information relating to the optimisation of the gas distribution and views on reducing gas injection at elevated furnace levels.

A new porphyry copper gold district has been discovered at Goonumbla near Parkes in central New South Wales. Endeavour 26 North is the largest deposit known to date with a possible resource of 166.4 million tonnes at 0.74% copper, 0.12g/tonne gold and 1.7g/tonne silver, using a cut-off grade 0.3% copper. Mineralisation is primarily bornite in the higher grade zones and chalcopyrite in the peripheral lower grade zones. Most of the copper, gold mineralisation is associated with potassic alteration. Two mineralised quartz monzonite porphyry intrusive stages have been identified and these are related at depth to a large monz- onite stock which may have been the source of some of the mineralisation. On the basis of detailed paragenesis studies, the potassic zone can be divided into three symmetric subzones. The low grade inner potassium feldspar subzone is confined to the later intrusive porphyry. The outer potassium feldspar subzone is the most highly mineralised alteration halo due to the focussed superimposition of two hydrothermal cycles which have overprinted intrusive and volcanic rocks. The fringing biotite potassium feldspar subzone reveals alteration minerals which are developed early in the paragenesis. Fracture controlled quartz sericite alteration with low sulphide content, fringes and, in part overprints the potassic zone. The restricted pipe-like nature of the alteration zones and related mineralisation suggests that Endeavour 26 North is repres- entative of a multiphase focussed porphyry copper gold system.

The EnvIRONment process has been developed to treat steel works dust and organic wastes simultaneously. A pelletised feed is fed into a special DC electric furnace, the pellets becoming immersed in a molten slag above a carbon saturated bath. The iron oxide in the pellets is reduced and carburised whilst the organics are broken down to carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and water vapour. Volatile metals are vapourised and collected in the baghouse. Over two years of trials in a 100 kg DC electric are furnace has brought the process to the stage where it is ready for commercialisation.

Epicentres of recent shallow earthquakes in the region (3-12¦S, 126-150`E) were plotted to identify the various plate boundaries in the region, in particular the southernmost one marking the northern edge of the Australian plate. New and published fault plane solutions were examined to determine the style of faulting and state of stress along the Australian plate boundary. From east to west the boundary is first a subduction zone along the Solomon Islands, then a spreading centre across the Solomon Sea, a zone of compression and left lateral strike slip along the Papua Peninsula, almost pure thrusting across the centre of New Guinea and lastly left lateral strike silo through Irian Taya to the outer Banda Arc. The principal stress is very consistent, trending NW to NNW in a near horizontal plane, from the triple junction of the Pacific, Solomon Sea and Australian plates in the east to the Banda Sea in the west. Only along southern Solomon Sea plate margin which is a divergent boundary, is the stress different in type and direction.

In the new refinery, at the works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Limited, situated at Port Pirie, South Australia, the refining routine is similar to that carried on in the old one in that bullion is progressively refined first for arsenic and antimony, then for copper and gold, then for silver, and finally for zinc. However, actual procedure differs in that each refining operation is now conducted continuously, whereas in the old refinery intermittent batch treatment was practised.The early experimental work was concerned solely with the development of the continuous desilverising process, which, in addition to continuous treatment, embraces the novel feature of conjugate solution formation with consequent production of a silver product relatively high in silver and low in lead.

Akita Zinc Refinery of Mitsubishi Metal Corporation (MMC) started operation in 1953 with a capacity of 560 tons of electrolytic zinc per month. Its capacity has been expanded gradually and reached 8,100 tons per month in 1973. However, present production level is about 6,500 tons per month due to the depressed zinc market. In 1963, newly developed sulphate roasting was incorporated for residue treatment. Since 1973, electric power from Ohnuma geothermal power station of MMC has been supplied in addition to hydroelectric power from Komata power station of MMC. At present, about 40% of power is supplied from our company's power station and the rest is from the power company. Recent customers' demands for zinc prod- ucts include various kinds of shape, weight and chemical composition of galvanizing zinc alloy. It is necessary for zinc producer not only to meet the requirements of customers but also to enhance the value of zinc product in order to expand the market of zinc.

A reciprocating plate column is described in which two sets of perforated plates are mounted alternately on two shafts and are reciprocated with a phase difference of 1800 between them. It is shown that such a column is mechanically superior to the previously proposed types: under practical operating conditions the pressure fluctuations at the base of the column are only a small fraction of the static head. Furthermore, mass transfer experiments with the system tributyl phosphate in kerosene- acid aqueous solutions of uranyl nitrate show that both high specific throughputs and reason- ably good efficiencies can be attained in this type of column. A comparison with the more conventional extraction equipment (mixer -settlers, pulsed columns) on the basis of residence time per equilibrium stage indicates the potential of reciprocating plate columns in hydrometallurg- ical application, especially in which the requirements of separation efficiency are modest while the scale of operation is large.

BHP BillitonÆs Yandi channel iron deposit has a large resource of approximately 1.3 billion tonnes. This is a bulk mining operation with a high degree of selectivity not being practical. In contrast the deposit geology is a complex interrelationship of primary channel facies, secondary enrichment of iron and a secondary redistribution of the major contaminants. These variations in geology and alteration can occur over ranges of hundreds of metres down to knife edge contacts. In addition, differences in primary facies and mobility during alteration often result in the iron and contaminants having different patterns of enrichment and depletion. Despite the scale of these operations, if the geological domaining is not optimal, significant errors in the resource estimate of grades and tonnage will occur. Getting the geology right has become a common clichT among mining professionals. However, in many situations, obtaining optimal geological domains for resource modelling is best achieved when there is input from geology, statistics and geostatistics. In this paper, moving window statistics are utilised to see through locally high variability to identify trends that assist in locating difficult to identify geological boundaries. After the creation of geological domains, univariate and multivariate statistics and principal component analysis assist in validating and characterising geological domains. Finally, variography and domain contact analysis are used to analyse the nature of the boundaries between geological domains. At the Yandi channel iron deposit, the inter-relationship between geological and geostatistical analysis has resulted in significant improvements to geological domaining and the treatment of domain boundaries during estimation of iron and contaminates.

Uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus values measured in the laboratory on NX diamond drill cores were examined statistically to bring out any significant differences between different locations in the mine which might require special treatment in subsequent photoelastic analyses of the mine layout. Correlations were sought between the strength and modulus and various other features of the rock. The estimated mineral content of the core correlated with the modulus of the core, but the range of modulus values was too limited to show any strong correlation with compressive strength.Strength in the vertical direction was found to be significantly higher than in the horizontal direction and the same pattern was followed by the moduli, but was less pronounced. It was concluded that, whilst the modulus variations were significant, they would not invalidate any photoelastic studies.

BHP Diamonds and their joint-venture participants DiaMet Minerals, Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are currently developing Canada's first commercial diamond mine in the arctic barren lands of the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level.
