During periods of high metal prices and strong metal demand tailings retreatment can be economic. Most tailings retreatment operations are technically challenging, low margin operations, because the easily recovered mineral has already been removed, therefore, process improvements can potentially yield large economic benefits. The Hellyer tailings dam was owned by Intec Ltd and contained 10.9 million tonnes grading 2.8 per cent zinc, 3.0 per cent lead, 88 g/t of silver, 0.16 per cent copper and 2.6 g/t gold. In November 2006 the Polymetals Group, as operator, restarted the Hellyer plant to retreat these tailings. Within a few months the operation had stabilised and Polymetals was meeting budgeted targets of throughput, metal recovery and concentrate quality. Polymetals and Intec then investigated methods that would improve the metallurgical result for this difficult to treat tailings. Since the tailings are fine-grained with 80 per cent <45 ¦m, magnetic aggregation of the paramagnetic sphalerite was evaluated. Magnetic aggregation of an oxidised tailings feed has not been tested before, nor had the technology been available when Hellyer ore was originally processed. Extensive statistical test work showed magnetic aggregation of the sphalerite fines in the zinc cleaner circuit increased total zinc recovery. The increase in the mean zinc recovery with magnetic conditioning was 3.63 per cent, at a statistical level of confidence of 97.8 per cent, and at the same mean zinc concentrate grade.

The Northparkes copper-gold project is being developed in Central Western New South Wales approximately 30 km NNW of the town of Parkes and approximately 350 km west of Newcastle. The project is a joint venture between North Limited (80 per cent) and the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent). North is the manager. The basis of the project is three copper-gold orebodies, the northern two of which are being mined by conventional open cut methods with the third and largest orebody at the southern end of the lease to be mined by block caving. A fourth mineralised body has been identified in the centre of the lease. While further evaluation of this deposit is required it would appear to be amenable to block caving. Oxide caps of gold ore and copper-gold ore over-lie the two northern orebodies. Development commenced with the construction of a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant to treat the oxide gold ore. Construction of a flotation plant to treat oxide copper-gold ore and sulphide copper-gold ore is underway. When full-scale operation is achieved late in 1996 the plant will treat 5.0 million tonnes of ore per year of which 1.1 million tonnes will be open cut ore and 3.9 million tonnes will be block cave ore. In terms of annual ore tonnage the underground mine will be the largest metalliferous mine in New South Wales and the second largest in Australia.

Mine-groundwater interaction at the Pasminco Rosebery Mine (PRM), western Tasmania, deserves special attention due to the unique climate and mining environment present. High rainfall and low evapotranspiration result in an excess of water, an uncommon problem at Australian sulfide bearing mines. Research is being undertaken to delineate current subsurface fluid flows and predict future fluid flows in order to improve management after mine closure. Acid mine drainage generation is well developed in abandoned mines throughout the area. If acid mine drainage is not controlled after mine closure, significant environmental degradation could occur in the receiving waters of the Pieman River system. The study area encompasses the heavily forested Mount Black, and underlying PRM workings. Groundwater flows beneath Mount Black through a crystalline fractured rock aquifer with faults and underground mine workings observed to act as the major hydraulic conduits. Recharge is controlled by local precipitation, and the ultimate discharge is thought to be the Pieman River system, which forms the topographic low in the area. Slug tests have been used in conjunction with the mineÆs extensive geotechnical database to spatially evaluate variation in hydraulic conductivity. In fractured rock terrain associated with mining, rock quality designation data can be a useful tool in delineating areas of similar hydraulic conductivity when combined with conventional hydrogeological methods. A GIS, mine planning software, an environmental and a geological database are linked to form the input for groundwater modelling.

The key to successful flotation plant design, production planning and mine/mill optimisation is a solid understanding of the resource to be processed. As advocated by the authors of this paper, the main components of geometallurgical modelling of an orebody and its associated flotation plant are: an ore sampling program and subsequent laboratory testing of these samples in order to extract process model parameters; geostatistical distribution throughout the resource model of the process parameters; calibration of the plant via benchmarking (for existing operations); and plant simulation using a system of process models and the distributed metallurgical parameters (from step two) as the data set.It is important that the grinding and flotation models are linked. For example, a laboratory test conducted on a drill core sample, intended to represent a portion of the orebody, is conducted at a specific grind (represented by a P80). However, when that ore is actually processed through the plant it may well be (and in many cases most likely will be) at another P80. Additionally, the flotation plant residence time will often be determined solely by the grinding circuit capacity and feed slurry density. In the case of SAG mill û ball mill circuits, the fluctuations in tonnage and grind are known to be high. The modelling approach described in this paper allows for changes in the measured flotation kinetic parameters in order to reflect the expected grind as determined by the comminution process.

Deposits of manganese oxides and silicates in the Tamworth area were re-examined. The major deposit at Danglemah consists chiefly of rhodonite and the rare silicate tephroite. It is considered that the manganese was deposited with the original sediments, the silicates being formed later during the intense folding and low-grade metamorphism of the enclosing rocks.INTRODUCTIONMany small deposits of manganese oxides and silicates occur along a belt of eastern New South Wales and Queensland.Some fifty occurrences, most of which have been subject to mining activity, were described by Lloyd (1943) and some of this information was summarized by Knight (1947). The ores have been mined on a small scale since 1884. Small supplies of battery grade ore were won from a number of deposits, while larger quantities of metallurgical grade were sold to the steel industry. Maximum production was in 1918, when 6,500 tons were mined.The siliceous nature of many of the ores and their occurrence in the neighbourhood of granite batholiths led earlier investigators to consider the deposits to be of hydrothermal origin, associated with the granite intrusions. The present work questions this viewpoint.In this investigation, three of the chief deposits in the Tamworth area were seen. These were at Danglemah, which is being mined at present, and Mount Jasper and Manganese Mountain, which were mined in the past. Ore in pillars constitutes a significant proportion of the ore reserve at PasmincoÆs Broken Hill Mine. Many of these pillars are narrow (5 -6 m) and high (16 û 35 m) vertical blocks. High-grade ore has been left between primary horizontal cut and fill stopes. These stopes were mined from the late-1960s until the early-1980s. Fill material is a variety of hydraulically stowed sand, sand-cement, and remnant timber support. Many pillar cut-throughs were made between the old stopes. In order to gain access for the current pillar recovery operations, it has been necessary to develop pillar drill drives through, and adjacent to, the hydraulic filled stopes. Whilst long hole recovery of vertical pillars is not new, some notable successes using innovative ideas have been achieved during 1997. These innovations include:The use of steel mesh reinforcing in shotcrete when mining through, or adjacent to, hydraulic fill. Construction of steel sets to support vent rises and haulage ways encountered in the cut-throughs. The use of ground movement monitoring equipment. Survey lasers with chain droppers and convergence monitors were installed in the 18 Pillar to detect any movement of the pillar block and decrease risk to personnel. The development of a three-dimensional computer model of primary stoping, using Vulcan software, to assist in the design of pillars. Maximisation of recovery using different drilling and firing practices.

Fluid inclusions and sulfur isotopic compositions were studied in a possible extension of the Toyoha polymetallic vein deposit. The objective of this work was to gain a better understanding of the ore depositional conditions, sources of ore constituents, and distribution of mineralizing fluid in the region. Fluid inclusions in sphalerite and quartz show that most homogenization temperatures range between 190¦ and 290¦C. Most salinities range from 0.0 to 3.4 wt per cent NaCl equiv. Sulfur isotopic compositions of ore minerals (pyrite, sphalerite and galena), determined by a conventional technique, range between 1.3 and 7.7 per mil. The mineralizing fluids were characterized by relatively low and various temperatures and low to moderate salinities compared to those at the southeast region of the main ore bodies (Izumo and Shinano veins) where rare elements such as tin, tungsten and indium occurred. Obtained temperatures and salinities were attributed to the mixing of hydrothermal fluids with groundwater. Sulfur isotopic data suggest sulfide sulfur was of magmatic origin. Isotopic temperatures, estimated from the isotopic fractionation factor between sphalerite and coexisting galena, are between 195¦ and 322¦C. The temperatures are only consistent with fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures in sphalerite or coexisting quartz when sphalerite was a honey-yellow coarse crystal lacking conspicuous colored growth bands. This suggests the detailed classification of mineral pairs growth textures will be necessary for precise in situ measurements to obtain reasonable eothermometric results.

The breaking of rock by explosives occurs so rapidly that the details of the phenomenon cannot he observed by the unaided eye. High resolution cameras and VCRs offer a means of slowing down the blasting action. A high resolution super video camera with digital zoom and a variable shutter speed was imported and used for the first time in India as a tool for blast optimisation studies at Malanjkhand Copper Project. Slow motion play-back revealed that the gases vented out through the fissures. The crest moved prior to the lower portion of the bench when initiated with detonating cord. The delay timing between the rows was not enough to provide sufficient relief and rock movement. This inadequate delay timing resulted in flyrock from the back rows. Stemming ejection was observed from practically all the holes. The muck profile was not satisfactory. A trial was carried out using 450 ms in hole delays and 25 nis surface delays. The front row holes were drilled based on the observations made from the laser profiling survey system. The video of the monitored blast showed that the rock started moving prior to the stemming ejection. It could be clearly seen that the entire block was completely initiated through the surface delays before the onset of the burden movement, thus eliminating any chance of misfires. Viewing blasts in high quality slow motion was useful to arrive at modified design parameters, resulting in uniform fragment size distribution and controlled rock movement.

This paper presents details of CRC MiningÆs work with waterjet assisted blasthole drilling. The objective of this work was to investigate techniques that reduce the cost and increase the productivity of blasthole drilling. The focus is on a technology that uses a high pressure waterjet to assist the conventional rotary rock cutting action of a tricone drill bit. The potential benefits of this technique are increased productivity, reduced drill bit wear and reduced hole deviation and hence improved quality of drilling. This paper describes the results of a laboratory based experimental program comparing conventional tri-cone drilling performance to the proposed waterjet assisted approach. Additionally, work has been completed looking at the more practical issues around the collection and sampling of drill cuttings and water recovery (recycling) when drilling with a waterjet. These studies have demonstrated that waterjet assisted drilling can significantly increase the rate of penetration over conventional rotary drilling. For the best-case experimental result, the relative improvement was over 40 per cent. More importantly, it is a starting point for examining alternative uses of the additional drill productivity obtained from waterjet assisted drilling. For example, increased drill productivity could be used to improve rock fragmentation by drilling a tighter blasthole pattern in the same time period. an existing drill fleet, then the drill fleet size could be reduced, or improved rock fragmentation could be achieved by drilling a tighter blasthole pattern within the same time period.

A key concern both in public perceptions of the environmental performance of the mining industry and in the development of policy relating to mining activities is the state in which the areas may be left at the completion of mining operations. There is, in effect, concern that the transient economic benefits of mining are enjoyed by the few, while the 'scars' may remain for all. While the techniques of mine rehabilitation have improved rapidly in recent years, an important set of economic issues has generally been neglected.In this paper, the economic and policy aspects of mine rehabilitation are examined. The key issue addressed is how to determine when expenditure on rehabilitation should stop. The answer to such a question requires consideration of the full range of social, as well as private, costs and benefits of rehabilitation at a particular site. Clearly these costs and benefits will vary between sites. From both an economic and policy perspective it is important to establish whether the additional gain from more rehabilitation would exceed the additional cost.It is concluded in the paper that the technical feasibility alone does not justify a paeticular level of rehabilitation activity and expenditure. While more rehabilitation at a particular site may be technically feasible, the additional expenditure incurred in undertaking that rehabilitation may result in little extra benefit. This conclusion has important implications for government policy, particularly with respect to establishing the goals for rehabilitation, criteria for successful rehabilitation and enforcement of rehabilitation objectives.

Mine planning is difficult. Even for small operations, it involves reasoning with complex variables and the practical difficulties of mining. It is also about predicting and planning the future in an unpredictable physical and economic environment. Yet we rely on a handful of individuals and their spreadsheets to tell us how to do it û planning the business and activities of mining to hopefully produce results that will please stakeholders. Does it work? Not as well as it could. Planning affects everyone in the organisation. Company executives are demanding more reliability and stability in cost and revenue forecasts from their operations. Management want to explore ways of being more cost effective. Miners and contractors want more useful plans and realistic targets. And the planners have to describe the method that will translate business objectives into implementable plans. Even with the use of computer technology a lot of effort is expended to produce plans that are largely qualified by the level of knowledge and experience of individuals. Better use of information and the application of Intelligent Technologies can improve the quality and reliability of mine plans and schedules. By capturing the knowledge within the organisation and speeding up the planning process, Intelligent Technologies allow more options to be considered more rigorously. But it is not just about technology. It is about how technology is implemented and embodied in the way the business is managed for performance. When this happens, the real benefits of better planning start to flow.

The'treatment of the South Alligator valley uranium ores passed through three phases dictated by economic circumstances during the years 1956- 640 In the first phase high grade ores were treated by hand sorting and wet gravity separation for recovery of high grade concentrate to meet a United States Atomic Energy Commission (U.S.A.E.C.) contract for plus 50 per cent pitchblende concentrates. Secondly tailings from the gravity plant and some high grade ores were trucked to Rum Jungle and sold to the Australian Atomic Energy Comm- ission (A.A.E.C.). Thirdly solvent extraction plants were built at Moline (previously Northern Hercules) by United Uranium N.L. (UOU.N.L.) and at the South Alligator River by South Alligator Uranium N.L. (SOA.U.N.L.). These were the first solvent extraction plants designed in Australia, as earlier plants used the ion exchange process for recovery of uranium oxide. The plants were small, indeed the S.A.U.N.L. 15 ton per day plant was possibly the smallest commercial plant known, but they operated efficiently with good recoveries, and were placed on a care and maintenance'òbasis when contracts were filled. Sulphuric acid was supplied in bulk to both plants by the A.A.E.C. from the 30 ton a day acid plant at Rum Jungle. Gold was recovered as a by product of uranium ore from the Moline plant.

The Lihir gold operation, located in the New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), approximately 900 km north of Port Moresby, was commissioned in 1997 under the management of the Lihir Management Company, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto. This management period ended in 2005 with Lihir Gold Limited (LGL) becoming self-managed. LGL is now the largest listed company in PNG and a top tier mining company in Australia. The focus of the operation since 2005 has been to take advantage of strong market conditions to increase cash flow while driving operating costs into the lowest quartile of gold producers. During this period production has increased through capital expansions, most notably with the addition of a flotation circuit, and through culture change and efficiency improvements. The next step forward for the Lihir operation is a major plant upgrade to increase production to an average of around one million ounces per annum by matching the ore processing rate to the ore mining rate. The key benefits of this project will be the addition of approximately 240 000 ounces per annum of gold production, the access to an additional one million ounces of gold and the ability to meet all stockpiling requirements. The Lihir operation has come out of the boom period in a strong position, is undertaking a major upgrade at a time when prices are low and labour is available, and will be positioned to take advantage of future opportunities as they arise.

The basic methods to remove material from underground mines are to: convey continuously, batch in trucks, or batch in a shaft hoisting system. A critical aspect in shaft hoisting is accurately batch loading the conveyance or skip. During the 20th century, the almost universally accepted method of loading was via a measuring flask. A measured quantity of material was filled into the flask as the conveyance traveled through the shaft and then, when the conveyance arrived at the loading position, it was ædumpedÆ into the skip for hoisting. Two skip loading conveyor systems have been developed in Australia: BHP BillitonÆs Cannington Hoisting System, installed in 1996, is believed to be the first conveyor loading system designed for two skips. Two parallel conveyors were installed with a two-way gate controlling feed onto each belt. Cannington was ideally suited to conveyor loading as the very high ore density and relatively low production rate required a relatively small volumetric storage capacity on the weighed belt. Newcrest MiningÆs Telfer Hoisting System, which is to be commissioned in 2005, consists of a single slewing conveyor loading each skip with 32 tonnes of ore. The development of this system eliminates the two-way transfer, improves the accessibility and minimises the excavation required. While every hoisting system must be considered on its merits, conveyor loading offers significant advantages to the Mining Industry in the 21st century.

In large companies with mining operations spread over multiple sites, it is essential that consistency between sites is maintained in preparing and classifying resource and reserve estimates. The endorsement by The AusLMM and AMIC of the "Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves" and the subsequent incorporation of reference to the code into the ASX listing rules for mining companies has provided a basis for the consistent classification of resources and reserves. However, compliance with other criteria more or less stringent than the Australasian Code can present some reporting difficulties. Examples include listing requirements for foreign stock exchanges, particular Acts of Parliament that may apply to individual leases, constraints imposed by individual companies on their own leases, and ultimately, reserves for short, medium and long term planning. Confusion can arise when any two or more sets of reserves for the same lease are compared.. To alleviate this confusion, a standardised procedure was developed for the calculation and classification of coal resources and reserves. The procedure which is geostatistically based incorporates a technique called "Irregular Block Kriging" where specific mining blocks are directly kriged. The procedure has enabled those engineers and geologists with only a basic understanding of geostatistics to apply the technique and not feel hampered by some of the complex mathematics which in the past has tended to inhibit and overcomplicate the use of geostatistics. The procedure has resulted in "cleaner" data bases and hence more reliable reserve estimates.

When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode amI across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. Coal mining in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the eastern United States, began in the late-1700s. Since that time numerous mining technologies have been used throughout the basin. Environmental concerns, particularly mine discharge quality, have only been considered since the early-1970s. During the last 20 years, many of the larger underground mines have closed and are now either flooding or already flooded. In order to understand the consequences and potential future effects of this flooding, mine mapping of the basin has been compiled utilising a geographic information system (GIS) with an emphasis on locating barrier pillars between mines. Mine flooding has been monitored at numerous sites utilising pressure transducers and data loggers. These data have been combined with historical data from mining companies and structure contour maps to yield chronological flooding maps of the basin from 1980 to present. Utilising these maps and the indicated flooding rates, future discharge locations have been identified along with estimates of when these discharges are likely to occur. Related work has identified barrier pillar hydraulic conductivities and vertical infiltration rates as a function of overburden thickness. All of this information has been integrated into a groundwater flow model that simulates mine flooding. This model is useful in defining mine to mine interactions as the various mines fill with water, and the testing of various flooding scenarios. The model will be used in evaluating mine discharge rates and evaluating the options for regional mine drainage treatment.

Covers on waste rock and tailings remain the primary choice for closure planning where the purpose is to create an environment where water ingress into reactive material can be controlled and/or prevented. In semi-arid and arid environments, dry cover systems are the preferred option with the design intention to absorb rainfall and to prevent deep drainage. Although the average amount of rain typical for semi-arid environments is relatively low and evaporative demand is high, the seasonal and annual distribution may vary greatly. Rocky substrates are often the only choice for the construction of covers due to economic constraints or availability of suitable materials. While the water holding capacity may be suitable for the application of a dry cover design in arid and semi-arid climates, some of these covers bear the risk of preferential water flow when rain events are intensive or occurring at high frequency. The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate the occurrence of preferential flow through rock containing dry cover systems. A regional classification for the applicability of dry covers is attempted to delineate those regions of Australia where the characteristic of the rainfall pattern increases the risk of failure for dry cover designs. In response to requests from the iron ore mining industry, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Division of Mineral Physics has developed a number of bulk analysis techniques in which analyses are obtained directly from ore samples weighing many kilograms or from ore located on conveyor belts.Because penetrating neutron and gamma radiation is used, measurements are obtained from a large volume of ore, which ensures thal the analyses are represelllative of the bulk.Two different gamma-ray techniques have been developed to measure iron ore grade. The first is based on backscallering of 60CO gamma rays, while the second involves measurement of the annihilation radiation which arises when the ore is irradiated wilh 226Ra gamma rays. Both techniques measure the iron concentration with an accuracy (1 s) of better than 0.4% Fe.A thermal-neutron irradiation technique using a 252Cf neutron source has been developed for the simultaneous determination of iron and the aluminium impurity (expressed as AI2O3) in iron ore fines on a conveyor bell. Because the conveyor speed must not exceed about 0.05 m/s, if good accuracy for AI2O3 is required, an auxiliary analysis bell is required Lo avoid inLerference with normal ore processing. Dynamic trials have demonstrated that accuracies of 0.6% Fe and 0.1% AI2O3 can be obtained.

Perhaps no aspect of the investigation of an ore-deposit is of greater importance to the mining geologist and engineer than a consideration of its geological structure. A thorough understanding of the type, size, shape, and arrangement of any ore-body is essential to the proper conduct of exploratory, developmental, and mining, operations. Significant as these remarks are' in relationship to ore-deposits in general, they become of paramount moment when a complex structure such as the Broken Hill Lode is in question. In this connection the use of the term "lode" as applied to the Broken Hill ore-bodies may terid to confusion of ideas among those not familiar with the field or with the literature pertaining thereto, by reason of the fact that it is generally understood that a "lode" is characterised by simple, tabular form, regular outline, defined walls, and persistent attitude.
