Reliable and discriminating small, laboratory scale methods of study have been developed and used successfully in the critical evaluation and interpretation of the carbonization characteristics of a wide range of raw and prepared materials, the variable factors in the coking process, and' the mechanical properties of the carbonized products. The simple and highly economic technologies have been successfully and effectively integrated with detailed surface and subsurface geological exploration programmes (particularly in the coalfields of the .Central Bowen Basin of Queensland) as well as with quality and utilization studies of a nUII!ber of representative Australian and Japanese coals. Previously, only the results of comparatively large, laboratory scale studies have provided information reasonably indicative of those to be anticipated hi industrial practice, but these suffer serious disadvantages in terms of economy of material, time and resources; they have been difficult or even impossible to use as an essential part of any normal or comprehensive exploration programme. On the other hand, although previously developed smaller scale laboratory methods derive considerable advantage from their flexibility, amenity to critical control and inherent potential for speed and economy, they have hitherto permitted no effective or direct comparison with the results of industrial practice or full scale assessment. Comprehensive study results achieved through technologies developed recently at the University 'of Sydney demonstrate that carefully controlled small laboratory scale methods of evaluation quite suitable for use in exploration and, other programmes may be used to predict with considerable accuracy and reliability (in some cases exceedingthat of pilot scale study) the principal strength index of one of the established and internationally recognized full sc:ale tests-the Japanese Industrial-Standard Drum Test. It is probable that further study may establish satisfactory correlations with the results of other standard industrial procedures.

The observation of lower-than-predicted Fe/Cu ratios in the cementation of copper on iron in tests at elevated temperatures indicated that some other reaction was contributing to the reduction of cupric sulphate in addition to the reduction by elemental iron. Experiments showed that the copper sponge, which initially formed on the iron, subsequently reduced the cupric sulphate giving the products cuprous oxide and sulphuric acid.Tests were undertaken to determine the rate and equilibrium conditions of the reduction reaction with variations in the types of the reducing agent and solution parameters. The reaction first became apparent at temperatures above 50°C and as it ceased at pH 1·8 it was possible to induce further reaction by alkali addition.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Mae Moh coal mine is an open-cut coal mine in Thailand that produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually to generate 2400 MW of electricity. The surface mine pit covers is 4 km by 7 km with mining depths ranging up to 260 m. A large pit slope is formed with the progression of the mining operation. However, massive slides in the pit slope occur often due to the existence weak planes such as faults and bedding, and the weak mechanical properties of the rocks. Hence, 200 m to 300 m boundaries of rock block including coal seams are left in front of faults in order to prevent slides and maintain the stability of the pit slope. As a result, there are significant coal reserves beneath the abandoned area along the pit slope. Moreover, the mined coal seams are very thick and their thickness range from 15 to 30 m.This paper discusses the application of multi-slicing highwall mining system with stowing to this very thick coal seam left around large pit slopes by means of numerical analysis.

Trends in Test Filtration to Respond to Decreasing Sample Size There has been a steady decline in the quantity of samples available for testwork when developing new mining processes due to the maturing mining technology and the increasing costs of pilot testing. Larox, a supplier of filtration equipment and its co-operation partner Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) have been actively developing new equipment, testing methodologies and tools to plan test campaigns with the objective of being able to determine the optimum filtration technology and the parameters for sizing full scale equipment with a minimum sample size. With smaller sample sizes, the test scale diminishes from pilot scale to bench scale, and the small equipment size has implications for scale-up. Redesigning the equipment to simulate full scale equipment rather than to match filtration theory has led to some interesting developments. Comparisons between bench scale equipment and production units help identify the limitations of bench scale testing. The nature of filtration is such that it is unreliable to estimate filterability theoretically, and different testing methodologies have been investigated to be able to test the feasibility of filtration from samples as small as few grams. While not optimising the filtration technology, these methodologies provide an adequate level of accuracy for scoping studies. Together with improvements in equipment, a software tool has been developed to reduce the number of tests necessary to optimise filtration technology and parameters for sizing.

X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is a non-destructive technique that allows the exploration of the internal structure of solid objects in 3D. Over the past ten years, the combination of XCT with more conventional 2D techniques and quantitative 3D image processing and analysis (commonly referred to as digital rocks) has allowed us to address some of the most challenging problems in ore deposit studies. The range of X-ray energies used in XCT allows the X-rays to be transmitted through complex and dense materials including iron ores (eg sinters, lumps, granules). Recent high-resolution XCT scanners have the ability to generate multiscale (25 down to 0.3 µm voxel size) imaging of a given sample enabling the characterisation of 3D textures across a range of scales. This paper will focus on the application of digital rocks to iron ore sinter particles (using filtered polychromatic X-ray beam). The paper is divided into three parts and includes: i) details on the methodologies including their benefits and limitations and the effect of spatial resolution; (ii) the quantification of pore network topology and pore characteristics (eg open versus closed pores, pore size distribution and pore morphologies; degree of connectivity of the pore network and its tortuosity); and (iii) the evaluation of the technique to characterise various phases within the material and quantify 3D mineral textures.CITATION:Godel, B, Ellis, B, O’Dea, D, Honeyands, T and Harvey, T, 2017. The Otago Schist is being subdivided on a regional scale into structurally, metamorphically and lithologically distinct blocks. Differences between blocks are subtle, and difficult to map in the field. Boundaries are late-metamorphic or immediately post-metamorphic in origin, and are different from later brittle faults which disrupt the schist. Mapping of late-post-metamorphic structural discontinuities has direct application for basic grassroots exploration in the Otago Schist. The mineralised (and currently mined) Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone forms a regional scale boundary between a block dominated by politic schist and a block with massive psammitic schist, pelitic schist, and minor greenschist and chert. The HMSZ forms a metamorphic discontinuity, with garnet and biotite in the underlying schist, and neither index minerals apparent in the overlying schist. The HMSZ is also a structural boundary between domains with differing lineation orientations. The HMSZ can not yet be traced along strike to the northwest to the Rock and Pillar Range, where the only major discontinuities recognised are the Caples-Torlesse boundary and a normal fault separating low grade from high grade schist. Structural and lithological discontinuities in the Dunstan Range break the range up into distinct structural blocks, two of which are separated by the gold-mineralised Rise and Shine Shear Zone.

The modern Golden Cross mine entered the production phase in January 1992. The project is designed to produce over 100 000 oz/yr of gold and over 300 000 oz/yr of silver during a mine life of eight years. An open pit and an underground mine are operated producing around 850 000 t/yr of ore, to feed a conventional carbon-in-leach processing plant. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited (80%) and Viking Mining Company Limited (20 %).   Since the start of production several major aspects of the design have altered. The underground mine began as a mechanised cut and fill operation. The cut and fill stoping progresses in 3.3 m flatback lifts with maximum stoping width of 6 m. Where the ore zone is wider than 6 m a post pillar cut and fill method is used. In 1993 a new bench mining plan was introduced between the 270 and 260 levels. Flatbacking continued in the footwall drives in anticipation of variability of the ore width and orientation. The development of levels below the main service 200 level has indicated a possibility of bulk mining the ore block rather than flatbacks. This could lower mining costs but also introduce higher dilution rates. Development is in the advanced stages for trialing this method.

Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! Channel iron deposits (CID) consist of ferruginous chemical sediments, and are an unusual subset of Phanerozoic ooidal ironstone deposits almost unique to the Pilbara, where they constitute around 19 per cent of the Pilbara’s iron ore exports. These deposits occupy many of the ancestral river channels of the Pilbara region, especially the Robe River palaeochannels, incising and meandering through the Precambrian banded iron formations (BIF) of the Hamersley Group and the underlying Fortescue Volcanics.This paper explores the factors underlying geochemical variation in CID, particularly the chemical properties of goethite. The selected deposits in the western Robe palaeochannel and its tributaries show little or no secondary reworking by later water tables. There is a total absence of aluminosilicate clays with all the deleterious elements such as aluminium and silica. Instead, these are associated with the goethite mineral lattice, either within or adsorbed to the cortices of pelletoids.A thickly vegetated environment, and the presence of the Maddina Volcanics as potential source rocks for these western Robe CID is offered as an explanation for relatively high aluminium in the deposits studied, and, in turn, as the reason most parts of the palaeochannel are preserved as inverted topography.CITATION:Beattie, E, Placzek, C and Blake, K, 2017. The presence of gold or tin in a particular place in payable quantities may be suspected from geological and prospE;cting reports. It behoves the engineer by judiciously spaced boreholes or pits to establish whether the place is exploitable with profit, and it is the purpose of this paper to set out the ways in which this is done. The various types of deposit to be considered occur in Malaya, Thafland and Borneo, in which countries the writer spent four years in estimating alluvials.The methods described were used in actual practice both by the writer and previous engineers for the same company. The subsequent exploitation of the alluvials evaluated by the methods given below shows that the recovery was as good as, and sometimes higher than, expected. No claims are made to the originality of the methods, but it is 'felt that they may be new to some engineers and< interesting to others contemplating alluvial testing.

Dry separation of iron ore fines and other heavy minerals has previously been achieved using one of two main approaches. The first is an inclined table with an upward airflow via small holes to help form an autogenous dense medium. The second is based on fluidised beds comprising a dense medium formed by fine particles suspended in an upward flow of air. In either case, vibration can be introduced. This paper describes recent findings using a novel system referred to as the Sink-Hole Fluidiser, which utilises elements of both these two former approaches. This device consists of a conventional gas-fluidised bed of fine medium with a 1 mm aperture mesh located at the surface. This mesh contains relatively large holes that act as sink-holes. The fluidised media flows upwards through the sink-holes and then falls back into the fluidised bed via the fine apertures in the mesh. The particles being separated, which are much larger than the fine media, pass over these sink-holes, where they either sink or float. The sink-holes offer a more precise balance of forces, applied on a single particle basis, resulting in robust density separation.Experiments have been performed using 2.0–4.0 mm tracer particles of density varying from 2.4 to 4.8 relative densities (RD) separated in a 200 mm diameter Sink-Hole Fluidiser with a single 13 mm diameter centrally-located sink-hole. In this preliminary semi-batch work, it was found that the Sink-Hole Fluidiser was able to achieve sharp separations (Ep as low as 0.20). During the extensive research which has been conducted in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne, into the properties of lead and its dilute alloys, the Brinell test has been used for the determination of hardness.The work described herein represents part of an investigation into the influence of various factors on such determinations, particularly when carried out on different qualities of "pure" lead. It is intended to publish the more theoretical and controversial aspects of this research elsewhere.MATERIALS USED AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR TESTINGThe tests to be reported have been conducted on a specially pure electrolytic lead, and several brands of commercially "pure" lead. The analyses of the samples upon which most of the work has been carried out are given in Table 1.Note: Oxygen was not determined, but from the work of H. W. Worner, in the Rosenhain Memorial Laboratory, it appears probable that it was approximately 0-0003% in all samples.

The need to hoist increasing loads from great depths is leading to the more general adoption of winders of the Koepe and Blair types. The trend has introduced a number of new problems in winding ropes, more particularly in the Koepe system where regular destructive tests during the life of a rope are not possible. Consequently, the importance of introducing non-destructive tests is much greater, especially so in the case of Koepe ropes used for deep winding where there are three major destructive fatiguing influences. These are rotational effects when a vertical rope is changed end-for- end each trip, the much greater range of stress to which the rope is subjected each trip as compared with drum winding, and the destructive effect of a high coefficient of friction between wheel and rope. A plea for a lower coefficient in the interest of better rope and tread life, substantiated by analysis, is made for Koepe winders operating at depth.Co-ordination of rope testing with general hoisting problems is stressed and the active participation of the Wire Rope Committee of the Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Ltd. in the promotion ofthe project is noted.The general introduction of a rope testing programme in Australia, personnel requirements and some local basic research in the subject to cope with future demands are considered.

Nickel-bearing ores in North-east Dundas have been described by A. McIntosh Reid1 as occurring at the margins of narrow dykes of gabbro, norite, peridodite and pyroxenite, which are intrusive into the Dundas series of slates, quartzites and breccias. They occur chiefly in the neighbourhood of the Five Mile, near Zeehan, as small, narrow ore-bodies which are mostly less than 100 ft. in length.The ores are massive sulphides containing pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite and the nickel sulphide, pentlabdite.A less common nickel-bearing mineral, gersdorffite, has been recently found in an adit, which is marked on Reid's geological plan of Dundas as the Hecla mine, 30 chains south of the crossing of the North-east Dundas tramway, over the Great Northern Creek, and at an, elevation of about 350 ft. above the tramway. The occurrence is in a lode traversing the Dundas slates and quartzites, and is situated, according to Reid's plan, about 20 chains beyond the northern extremity of a narrow basic dyke which is continuous for a distance of two miles in a south-westerly direction.The mine eonsists of a prospecting adit following the course of a lode for about 275 ft. in a direction a little west of south. The low values of the lode are indicated by a bulk sample from a shallow winze about 100 ft. from the entrance which is reported by Reid to contain:

Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. The Ross Goldfield is a unique gold resource. From its discovery in 1865 there was a growing understanding of the geology of the deposit as mining moved from the surface at Jones Flat in the south to underground extraction at Ross Flat further north. Multiple layers of gold-bearing gravels were penetrated in deep shafts and six rich gold-bearing bottoms were worked. The ultimate bottom on the Old Man Group gravel surface has never been reached either at Jones Flat or at Ross Flat. Mining at Ross Flat was ultimately halted by uncontrollable flooding, by escalating costs and by a shortage of labour during the First World War. Mining at Jones Flat recommenced in the late 1980s and attention has once again been drawn to the potential magnitude of the resource at Ross Flat. Research of historic literature shows that there is potential for a bulk gold grade of 400 mg/m3 in a volume of 82 million cubic metres of gravels which lie in a basin between Jones Flat and north Ross.

On-stream determination of xanthate concentrations can be made by photometric measurements at 313 nm.A simple double-beam instrument was developed for this purpose. A mercury lamp is used as the light source and a composite filter of UGll glass and chromate solution is used to isolate the required spectral region. The light beam is split into two components of approximately equal intensity. One component is passed through a reference cell containing water to a photo detector; the other component is passed through the xanthate solution to a second photo detector. The reference signal controls amplifier gain to eliminate effects of lamp intensity changes and the amplified sample signal can then be used to measure xanthate concentration.Plant trials showed that provided a clear solution free of air bubbles was obtained from an on-stream filter, the instrument indicated the xanthate concentration and operated satisfactorily for long periods.

The Takasima Coal Mines comprise four islands near the entrance to Nagasaki Harbour, and are owned and worked by the Mitsu Bishi Company.There are several unusual features in the occurrence and working of these coal seams, the steep angle of "dip," the numerous seams of good coal separated by hundreds of feet of sedimentary rocks, the extensive faulting of the strata, and the way in which the coal is won, when so little surface is available for works, and where there is the ever present danger of subsidence of the roof and consequent flooding of the workings by the ocean. The author trusts that short notes on these few points will be of interest to members.The Islands are named respectively Hasima (Extreme Island), Nakanosima (Middle Island), Takasima (High Island), and Yokosima, and are situated about one mile from the main land.

Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process.
