A challenge on many industrial flotation circuits is controlling concentrate mineral grades using measurements that are provided infrequently. The mineral grades in concentrate streams are a critical performance indicator in any industrial flotation circuit. Failure to achieve concentrate mineral grade targets has significant financial consequences on a flotation operation. A violation of gangue mineral grade limits by the concentrator may also result in significant penalties.Online grade analysers which can provide reliable real time grade measurements are essential for effective grade optimisation. The Blue Cube MQi analyser (by Blue Cube Systems) has recently come to prominence for its ability to rapidly determine mineral concentrate grades online and has the benefit of operating in-stream. This has provided excellent insight into the actual process dynamics in the flotation circuit, and hence enabled real-time control and optimisation of concentrate mineral grades.MintekÆs Measurement and Control division, specialising in advanced control solutions for mineral and metallurgical industries, has had the opportunity to link the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to the measurements provided by the Blue Cube system at the BCL nickel concentrator plant in Botswana. The project focused on stabilising the final concentrate grade while ensuring the final tailings are minimised, resulting in an improved nickel recovery. This site already had the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser for several years, but the original grade measurement device was unreliable and ultimately failed. The system was reactivated once the Blue Cube system was installed, replacing the old analyser. The Eyre Peninsula (EP) has been known for its iron ore for more than a century. Edward John Eyre noted the ironstone outcrop at what is now Iron Knob in the 19th century. Sir Douglas Mawson visited and reported on the geology of the lower EP in 1906, noting the widespread presence of iron stone and the likelihood of copper being associated with the iron stone. Despite this knowledge there has been only one successful iron ore mining region developed on the EP and that is Iron Knob and the Middleback Ranges which have been mined continuously since 1899. The Middleback Ranges can justly lay claim to be birth place of the Australian iron ore and steel industries.The discovery of large scale haematite resources in Western Australia meant that there was no need to seek out iron ore that needed benefi ciation. The low price of iron ore precluded further development of the EP and many other areas in Australia and overseas. This situation changed rapidly in the mid-2000s with the emergence of China as the world’s industrial power house and the soaring demand and price for many resources including iron ore. This triggered a flurry of activity across Australia and led to the rapid exploration and drives to develop the EP iron ore. A brief examination of the magnetic maps of the EP shows the wide spread presence of magnetite and associated smaller haematite deposits. A closer look reveals the magnetite deposits to vary in formation style and host rock lithology as well as being significantly altered by regional metamorphism. *This is an abstract only. Copper-Cobalt hydrometallurgy has seen a resurgence in recent years with the development of projects in Zambia and the DRC. Many of the flow sheets are unique in their use of hydrometallurgical techniques to improve performance compared to the older types in current use. The emphasis has moved from direct copper electrowinning/stripping, with multiple stages of precipitation for removal of impurities and concentration of cobalt, to innovative use of solvent extraction and ion exchange with higher cobalt recoveries to final product. The poor quality direct electro-won copper has been supplanted with solvent extraction-electrowinning; with consequent production of LME 'A' quality metal. Many of the precipitation steps in cobalt recovery and concentration, have been replaced with solvent extraction; while the remaining precipitation stages have been enhanced with use of oxidants to improve impurity removal. Operating experience from two of these circuits has shown the benefits of the new technologies and the improved overall recovery of both copper and cobalt into higher quality products.

Current models for the origin of banded iron-formation (BIF) derived in situ iron ore deposits assume that the typical chert and iron oxide banded BIF is the primary rock from which enriched iron ore deposits arise by the selective leaching of quartz and the residual accumulation of the iron oxides. Weathering extends to the base of all the hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province, which lie within the saprolitic weathering zone, as shown by the preservation of the primary textures, and are overlain by a hydrated goethite zone representing the solum. Since groundwater typically contains dissolved silica, derived from the hydrolysis of silicate minerals, greatly in excess of the saturation solubility of quartz, it is incapable of removing quartz from below the watertable, and quartz is preserved in all saprolites derived from quartz bearing rocks. Quartz may be dissolved in the solum due to the influx of meteoric water having little or no dissolved silica, but soil-forming processes that dissolve quartz likewise alter the oxides by hydration and transposition with consequent destruction of primary textures, and there is no suggestion of soil-forming processes having produced the deposits, which typically extend to considerable depths below the water-table. A characteristic feature of the typical hematite orebodies is the unaltered nature of the iron oxides in the ore compared to those in the adjacent cherty BIF. Although the solubility of ferric iron at >10 ppb is much less than quartz, any process capable of dissolving the huge volume of quartz must also affect the iron oxides, but evidence of this is completely lacking in most ore deposits. Hydrothermal alteration at Koolyanobbing in the Southern Cross Province affects both cherty BIF and ore, and clearly shows equal mobilisation and recrystallisation of hematite within quartz/hematite veins and in the surrounding cherty BIF, which shows no evidence for the selective leaching of quartz. Similarly, any metamorphic process capable of removing all quartz from BIF would leave characteristic evidence in the remaining oxides. However, a hydrothermal process may account for at least portions of certain ore deposits, in which the chert bands have been replaced by carbonates at comparatively low temperatures, to produce a quartz-free magnetite/ carbonate rock that is readily upgraded to high-grade ore by supergene dissolution of the carbonates. This process is interpreted to have formed high grade ore at Mt Gibson, Koolyanobbing æAÆ Deposit and Mt Tom Price North Deposit. In addition to carbonate replaced cherty BIF at Mt Gibson in the Murchison Province, there are extensive sequences of magnetite BIF without chert bands, and this chert-free facies of BIF is interpreted as the precursor to the majority of in situ hematite ore deposits, through oxidation and weathering of magnetite and iron silicate and carbonate minerals. The world-class martite/microplaty-hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province are a special case of BIF-derived iron ore deposits that were initiated during the Proterozoic era. Evidence from overlying Wyloo Group conglomeratic horizons containing clasts of Hamersley Group BIF indicates that microplaty-hematite formed within the clasts before deposition, and that Proterozoic subaerial oxidation and weathering of uplifted Hamersley Group formations produced the microplaty-hematite in both chert-free and cherty BIF.

THE irregularity of the Mount Morgan ore body presents problems other than those for mining only. For irregularity of outline is coupled with irregularity of grade, and the ore varies so rapidly from profitable to non-profitable, and from highly siliceous to highly pyritic, that the task of estimating quantities and values of ore reserves is manifestly rendered a difficult one, while the actual disposal Of the broken ore demands constant supervision.Four classes of ore are handled. The oxidized ore, cheaply mined and cheaply treated, is obtained by quarrying from the top of the mountain. Below the 315-ft. mine level (measured from the original summit) sulphide ore comes in, and this is divided into siliceous sulphide ore (too siliceous for economic smelting), sulphide ore suitable for smelting, and ore too poor either to be smelted or to be treated by wet process with the siliceous ore. A numerical model has been developed to simulate the effectiveness and costs of a number of conceptual remedial measures aimed at reducing acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and its tributaries near the Stockton Coal Mine, situated on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Stockton Coal Mine has been in operation over the past 100 years. During that time, seepage from waste rock dumps has contributed to elevated acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. The yearly mean rainfall at the mine site is 6000 mm. The model, developed using GoldSim software, simulates rainfall, run-off and stream discharge for 26 tributaries. It then calculates acidity and metal concentrations in the mine impacted tributaries and the dilution downstream from the mine. The model has been calibrated to measured flow and acidity and metal concentrations in the Ngakawau River and some of its tributaries. Acidity and metal loads are removed from the system in accordance with specified efficiencies and capacities of the respective conceptual remedial measures. The user can compare specific remedial measures, or a combination of conceptual remedial measures. The model predicts the acidity and metal concentrations at a number of monitoring stations for any remedial strategy selected by the user. It also calculates the capital and operational costs for that particular remedial strategy. This paper presents the development of the numerical model and describes how the end-user can use it to compare the efficiency and costs of various remedial strategies by running different æwhat ifÆ scenarios.

Froth flotation is the most commonly used separation technology in the mineral industries. Given the complexity of the pulp and froth phases as well as the multitude of operational parameters that influence flotation performance, purely fundamental models with strong predictive capacity are limited. As a result, accurately modelling modifications to an existing flotation circuit are challenging, particularly when using empirically-derived models from a different operating configuration. Despite these complexities, a recent publication by the authors (Huang et al, 2022) has shown that flotation rates can be accurately predicted from a first-principles model that incorporates hydrodynamic parameters (eg pulp density, superficial gas velocity, feed flow rates etc), surface chemistry parameters (eg contact angle, zeta potentials and surface tension), and size-by-class liberation data. Circuit simulations using this model were shown to be effective in predicting experimental graderecovery curves from the size-by-class mineral liberation matrix. Since the model is derived from fundamental characteristics of the flotation system, it can be used to simulate alternative circuit configurations with varying degrees of recycle. Conventional flotation circuits are operated in a closed-circuit configuration by routing the cleaner scavenger tails (CST) back to the rougher feed to provide an additional opportunity to recover the slow-floating particles. This widely-used flotation strategy has been under constant debate, and several researchers have provided evidence that open circuit configurations provide higher separation and better circuit control (Konigsman, 1985; Bulatovic et al, 1998; Thompson, 2016). Recently, Finch and Tan (2021), used linear circuit analysis to show that open circuit configurations have a fundamental advantage when stage recoveries are high. Given the limitations of these prior studies, the objective of the current work is to further evaluate the merits of the open circuit configuration through a detailed circuit analysis and simulation study incorporating the first principles model described above.

Iron ore mineralisation in the Paraburdoo environs is known to extend almost continuously over a strike length of 55 kilometres. Six formations of the Mount Bruce Supergroup con- tain high grade mineralisation in varying degrees of importance. Ore is currently being mined from the Joffre and Dales Gorge Members of the Brockman Iron Formation, with smaller, less significant amounts, occasionally taken from the lowermost units of the Weeli Wolli Formation and the upper parts of the Mount McRae Shale. Regional mapping has demonstrated the existance locally of a major unconformity at the base of the Wyloo Group sediments out- cropping south of the minesite. The basal con- glomerates at the unconformity are sometimes mineralised at Paraburdoo. A supergene enrich- ment process controlled by structure, strati- graphy and topography is the only one which can satisfactorily explain the disposition and chemistry of the Paraburdoo iron orebodies.

Mining of narrow vein mineralisation, invariably depending on the mining method selected, involves the extraction of both ore and waste rock. The level to which mining of waste rock can be minimised depends on numerous factors, but particularly the thickness and dip of the deposit. Resue mining is a method of mining that allows split face firing within stopes to allow waste and ore to be mined separately, allowing dilution to be minimised. This paper examines the technique of resue firing and its applicability to the mining of narrow vein deposits. Particular emphasis is placed on the conditions in which resue mining presents a suitable option for mining of narrow veins.

The preeipitation of dissolved lead from a strong brine by metallic iron is a chemically controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is sensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature. The precipitation of dissolved silver is a diffusion controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is insensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature.INTRODUCTIONLead and silver sulphates can be extracted from electrolytic zinc plant tailings, or residues, by leaching with strong brine solutions, the lead and silver going into solution as complex chlorides. One of the methods which can then be used to recover the dissolved lead and silver is to precipitate them with metallic iron. The deposition reactions which take place are of the type Pb++ Fe - Fe++ Pb............ (a)To fit such a method of precipitation successfully into a practical flowsheet it is necessary to have some knowledge of the kinetics of the various reactions, Le. to know how the precipitation rates vary with temperature, brine and metal concentrations, and so on. Reaction rates are also needed to design suitable precipitation vessels. However, when examining the possibility of using a brine leaching process to extract the lead and silver from the residue produced at the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, it was found that, although the use of metallic iron to recover lead and silver from the pregnant brine had been reported by Ralston (1924) and by TrumbulI, Hardiek and Lawford (1948), very little was known about the precipitation reactions. Underground metalliferous mining methods often result in the formation of vertical openings to facilitate the extraction of orebodies. These development and production techniques can result in the creation of vertical open voids, which include stopes, orepasses, ventilation raises and other excavations. There are risks associated with the use of mobile plant in the vicinity of these voids, especially during backfilling and when bunds are constructed at the edge of a stope or void. These voids can present unacceptable risks if not adequately managed.

Health and safety are the first priority for Australian minerals sector. Australia has a global reputation in the mining industry. However, accidents occur every year. Legislation and regulation are important to prevent the accident from occurring, so do the new technologies. It is sad to witness the collision incident persisting and the long called collision avoidance system (CAS) is still not widely used in underground mines. The main reason is that the existing systems are still not advanced enough. The current CASs utilise GPS, infrared, ultrasonic, RFID, Radar, electromagnetic etc have their limitations and disadvantages. For instance, GPS is widely used in a surface mine, but it cannot be applied in underground mine; Infrared and electromagnetic have the false positive problem.

The recovery of phosphate minerals from the Mt Weld deposit by froth flotation has been studied by many researchers. Most of the flotation experiments were carried out with a tall oil fatty acid as collector and sodium silicate as dispersant and gangue depressant at pH about 10. Several rougher stages and cleaner stages and, sometimes, a desliming stage were included. The major difficulty was to reduce the Fe2O3 impurities in the concentrate to the required level. We used QEM*SEM (Quantitative Evaluation of Materials by Scanning Electron Microscopy) to provide a comprehensive and accurate mineralogical analysis of the flotation products. The analysis indicated that the Fe2O3 impurities were mainly recovered in the second concentrate, owing partly to the incomplete depression of the liberated iron oxides by the sodium silicate and partly to composite particles containing iron oxides. The selective depressing action of sodium silicate was improved by adjusting the variables such as the modulus (SiO2/Na2O), pH and time of standing of the stock sodium silicate solutions or by adding some polyvalent metal salts into sodium silicate solution. The flotation process was optimised to produce a phosphate concentrate with the required grade and recovery (38.6 per cent P2O5, 2.67 per cent Fe2O3, 13.7 for P2O5/(Fe2O3 + A1203), at P2O5 recovery of 81.5 per cent). The possibility of recovering the rare-earth phosphate, monazite, from the Mt Weld deposit by flotation was also studied.

During the prefeasibility stage of the mining cycle for a gold deposit, an evaluation of the ore leaching characteristics from various defined areas is essential prior to plant design. There are a number of simple laboratory tests which have proven successful in establishing gold and silver leaching kinetics, carbon adsorption and fouling, as well as elution characteristics. A number of case studies of carbon-in-pulp (CIP) simulation are presented which show excellent agreement between calculated and assayed gold and silver grades in feed and adsorbed on carbon which validate the methods used.

Polarization phenomena associated with the use of an agitated bed of particles as an electrode for metal deposition were studied. The concentration polarization at this type of electrode is much smaller than that occurring at a fixed or moving electrode surface. Agitated particle electrodes can be used to electro-reduce copper from solutions over a wide range of concentration and at cur·rent densities up to 2000 AIsq. ft. of bed cross section.

The Intec Copper Process is an environmentally advantageous hydrometallurgical process for the production of high purity copper and associated precious metals from copper sulphide concentrates. The process uses a mixed chloride-bromide lixiviant in an elegant cyclic circuit to leach the copper into solution, rejecting the iron as stable hematite rather than as unstable jarosite. After purification of the pregnant liquor, copper is electrowon at London Metal Exchange Grade A purity, while the anodic energy of the cell is stored as the soluble species, HalexTM, for recycle as the regenerated lixiviant to the leach circuit. Both gold and silver are leached and recovered directly from this cyclic process without resorting to cyanide leaching of the residue. No liquid emissions result from the Intec Copper Process, whilst spent air and water vapour from the leach are released to the atmosphere. The sulphur in the minerals reports to the solids residue in elemental form, without the need for expensive handling of voluminous gaseous sulphur dioxide streams found in smelters. A significant difference to competing smelting and hydrometallurgical processes is that any mercury entering the process from the sulphide concentrate feed is recovered rather than reporting directly to waste or polluting the environment. Outside the process circuit itself, the Intec Copper Process has several notable environmental advantages over competing technologies: Flexibility of scale with low capital and operating costs allow operation directly at the mill head at production rates as low as 15 000 tpa, significantly reducing environmental impacts from concentrates transport. The ability to handle low-grade and dirty concentrates often allows greater recoveries in the mill, improving both the economics and environmental acceptability of a mine by reducing metal losses to tailings. A comparison of the total energy requirements of the Intec Copper Process with those of competing technologies shows that the Intec Copper Process has the lowest energy consumption of any of the known hydrometallurgical processes, as well as improving upon pyrometallurgy under appropriate conditions.

There is often a difference in opinion about the allocation of risk in the establishment of mine closure bonds or financial assurances. From the State’s perspective, protection is needed to ensure that the broader community is not left with the liability of properly closing a mine in the event of a default by the mine operator. Such a default might occur where an operator decides to abandon a site, perform incomplete rehabilitation, becomes insolvent or claims limited liability. On the other hand, mine operators who can demonstrate a strong financial position plus a record of social and environmental commitment and performance, argue that there should be some recognition of this in setting a bond that is less than the full cost of early closure. They argue that a mine rehabilitation bond based on the full cost of early closure is overly conservative and ignores the actual risk of the operator being in default.
