The results expected from a longwall face can best be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the effective operating hours, and the utilisation.The effective operating hours are determined by a number of scheduling factors which include the proportion of manned time to calendar time, the effective shift factor (effective time to manned time) and the move times.Analysis of the results achieved on the last 121 completed longwall panels in Australia (1984 onwards) shows a significant trend between 'actual tonnes/manned hour' and 'ideal production rate' (the measure of the capacity of the installation).Using 1982 'state of the art' longwall equipment, (the average in use in the seven year period), it should be possible to produce around 2.7M tonne/year ROM from a mine with one longwall. Few mines are achieving this.A review of production scheduling factors and general natural hazards affecting some mines suggests three things.1. Whilst some increase in average effective hours has followed the CIT decision, further improvement is possible at many installations.2. Many mines subject to general natural hazards, such as high gas make and high general stress, have found effective solutions and achieve the same utilisation as the overall average.3. A small number of faces within such mines have been severely affected, some less so. The most severe effects of natural hazards appear to be very site specific. This emphasises the need for detailed investigation of the causes, and development of means of predicting their presence. Only then can either satisfactory technical solutions be found to overcome the problems or prior decisions be chosen not to mine badly affected panels.

Incorporating industry best practice waste rock management methods can be a relatively straight forward task when preparing management documentation, such as an acid and metalliferous drainage management plan (AMDMP). However, a key difficulty is the incorporation of industry best practice methods that are practical and non-compromising on their purpose from a scientific standpoint. The second key difficulty is the implementation of these practical methods as various operational groups/departments are typically relied upon to execute and take ownership of different tasks or procedures.One approach to overcoming these difficulties is to develop an AMD Operations Manual (AMDOM) that:•Incorporates, where practicable and without compromising scientific merit, existing processes that those groups/departments ultimately responsible for the execution of the management action are familiar with; and•Provides standalone, simplistic, and easy to follow procedures for site personnel. The purpose of the standalone operations manual is to ensure site personnel who are responsible for undertaking specific procedures, have clear, step-by-step instructions for an individual procedure, without requiring interpretation and understanding of the more comprehensive AMDMP.In adopting a best practice approach to waste rock management for their iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Roy Hill developed an AMD Management System that is comprised of both an AMDMP and an AMDOM that are connected through adaptive management processes. This paper presents the results of the first part of a research project to study the effect of various inhibitors to reduce the spontaneous heating susceptibility of some highly susceptible Indian coal seams. In this investigation 11 inhibitors were chosen and applied at three, five and ten per cent of their concentrations in an aqueous solution for four coal samples collected from four different seams. The susceptibility of coal samples, before and after application of these inhibitors, was determined by carrying out crossing point temperature (CPT) analysis. The findings of this study have indicated that it is possible to retard the tendency of spontaneous heating of Indian coals to a considerable extent by the application of six of the inhibitors studied. Further, these inhibitors were tested in 1:1 combination to study their synergistic effect. Finally the economics of the application of these inhibitors has been analysed and four inhibitors are recommended for field use. These results have direct application to control fire and improve productivity and safety in coal mines.

At our Monkland Mine at Gympie, we operate a deep, narrow vein gold mine using hand held equipment, rail mounted haulage and narrow shafts. This is in many respects the old-fashioned way and is well suited most of the orebody geometry exposed to-date. We have also commenced some long hole stoping and we use alimaks for some jobs. The heart of our particular mining style is the employment and retention of experienced miners with remuneration based on productivity. We do our planning/monitoring/supervision down to the level of daily individual productivity. In focussing on cycles per se, we have chosen not to talk about drill and blast cycles or cycles for mine development, stope preparation or drawdown and haulage. Instead we have stepped right back from the operation as presently run and have adopted a very broad view of the mining cycle. We will in this presentation intertwine the ebb and flow of, exploration, project sponsorship, development, production and cash returns to owners. The time line considered spans both history and predicted future.

Technological development is accelerating in the mining industry (Abrahamsson and Johansson, 2021) and in large parts of the world there is an increased environmental awareness (United Nations, 2015). This can mean both challenges and opportunities. The mining industry has long been criticized for its adverse environmental effects. However, there is now a lively discourse about the role of mining in facilitating the green transition towards sustainable development. Mining is increasingly recognised as a prerequisite for the green transition, by supplying key raw materials to enable, for example, digitisation and batteries for electric vehicles. The green transition not only amplifies the demand for metals and minerals but also intensifies pressure on the mining sector to assume greater responsibility for environmental and societal welfare (Dehaine et al, 2020). New technology, such as digitisation, automation, and remote control, play a crucial role in advancing towards more sustainable mining practices. Despite the expanding role of advanced technology, human involvement will remain important in the extraction process (Rogers et al, 2019), but new technology will change how miners do their work, which in turn will lead to changed competence requirements for miners (Herbert and Hidalgo, 2021) and increased need for further education. Given the significant shift towards sustainable mining, it is important to study how these changes may affect the work, competences, further education and skills of miners as human expertise will continue to be critical in the extraction process. Consequently, there is a need for proactive research to prepare for the inevitable changes and implement measures to support miners through this changeable period to ensure a smooth transition that protects miners’ safety and working environment. This extended abstract explores how new technology will affect the need for further education of miners in the future.

Many open cut mines extend to depths well below the natural water table level with constant dewatering required to maintain operations. When mining activities cease the groundwater starts to fill the void and pit lakes form. The resultant pit lake is directly connected to the surrounding water table and understanding the hydrological and chemical evolution of these lakes is important for minimising environmental impacts. In Western Australia alone there are currently 1800 mine voids and more than 150 mines operating below the water table (Johnson and Wright, 2003). In conjunction with BHP Billiton Iron Ore, CSIRO has been undertaking research to measure and model rates of evaporation from pit lakes in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Incidental to the progress of a geological survey of the Kalgoorlie goldfield during 1927 - 1928 a number of specimens of telluride minerals were obtained, chiefly with the help of Mr F G Brinsden, general manager of the South Kalgoorlie mine, and Mr Ernest Williams, general manager of the Boulder Perseverance mine. This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preserved from the Kalgoorlie mine by Mr A E Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection of MrS F C Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and 'weissite', muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.The announcement of the occurrence of tellurides at Kalgoorlie by A G Holroyd in the Kalgoorlie Mine on 29 May 1896, followed by their discovery in comparative abundance, stimulated the further study of these minerals. In this locality there is a general absence of well-formed crystals, and the knowledge gained has been confined to the record and description of previously known, but exceedingly rare, species.No new species has been recorded, but the intimate association of various species resulted in early description of two supposedly new species, kalgoorlite and coolgardite. These have been discredited since the investigation by L J Spencer in 1903, based on a collection of specimens donated to the British Museum.Spencer's list of species at Kalgoorlie comprises calaverite, sylvanite (or krennnerite), petzite, coloradoite, 'and altaite, and does not include hessite, previously mentioned by Krusch. In 1912 melonite and a copper telluride were added by J A Thomson and the presence of hessite confirmed. In 1912 there also appeared a full and detailed account by E S Simpson on behalf of the WA Geological Survey, which embraced his earlier notes on the tellurides, and which represents the state of our knowledge of the Kalgoorlie minerals, practically as far as can be attained without the use of the reflecting microscope.The position has been stationary for about 18 years, and it was thought. that the best use to which the present collection of tellurides could be devoted was an attempt by mineragraphic methods to study the mineral relationships, not only of the tellurides among themselves, but also to gold and other associated minerals. The precise mineral content and relationships become a factor of added importance with the development of flotation methods of treatment at Kalgoorlie.Moreover, the study would supplement the description of the ore deposits of the Boulder Belt that has recently been published.

Geographical constraints, including steep terrain and high rainfall, at the Ok Tedi copper-gold mine in PNG’s Western Province present Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) with significant challenges in mine waste management. Waste management includes discharge of tailings into the local river system and storage of waste rock from the mine pit in waste rock dumps which erode into the river system. Copper bearing skarn mineralisation is associated with a massive sulfide (mainly pyrite) deposit. Consequently, waste rock and tailings can contain significant amounts of pyrite. Without appropriate management, these waste streams represent a risk of producing acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) when discharged to the river system. Throughout the life of the project, OTML have developed evolving strategies to manage mine wastes and mitigate AMD.

The cost of water treatment is now more than ever a major consideration for maintaining an environmentally and economically sustainable mining operation. As an industry, we often have to consider water sources that are highly impure and difficult to treat. We are also discovering the value of our waste waters in this regard and using new and improved methods and technology to reclaim and reuse water. In many instances, the water or waste water to be treated is highly acidic and saturated in sparingly soluble salts. Conventional systems used to liberate this type of water typically involve high doses of lime with large volumes of waste sludge produced, and are comparatively complex to operate, to pretreat the water in order to reduce scaling tendency on the reverse osmosis stage. However, if the water is considered valuable for reuse, then why not avoid difficult and cumbersome pretreatment processes and treat the water at low pH to keep the sparingly soluble salts, metals and other dissolved species in solution. This paper describes a patented technology that uses and successfully proves this concept as a cost effective option for certain situations. Results from a treatability study on an Australian groundwater are discussed, along with an economic comparison to a conventional method and discussion on full-scale potential.

Silver and gold bearing ore from the Troy Resources NL Casposo Gold-Silver Project, located within the San Juan Province of Argentina contains a complex mix of gold, silver, electrum and silver sulphides in the ore. Casposo is a typical low sulphidation epithermal style gold–silver deposit where mineralisation is hosted within rhyolite – andesite flows and breccias. Veins are typically banded quartz–chalcedony colloform - crustiform banded with quartz - carbonate infill. Mineralisation is associated with an assemblage consisting of quartz, chalcedony, adularia, calcite, illite, sericite and trace sulphides. Gold and silver occur as electrum, native silver, sulfosalts and silver sulphides. This paper presents a case study that describes the process selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of gold and silver from this ore.The original feasibility study, modelling, metallurgical testwork and engineering studies are outlined. The final flowsheet was based on minimising capital cost, operability, recovery and minimising technical risk.The process flowsheet uses the traditional Merrill Crowe route because of the high silver to gold ratio in the feed and achieves maximum gold and silver recovery while providing a common facility for future ore body treatment.

Poorly judged or under-appreciated change plays a role in many major accidents. In particular, operational changes related to continuous improvement, maintenance and introduction of new technology can lead to unintended safety (and other) consequences. This paper provides an overview of the role of management of change in preventing unwanted impacts on safety, community relationships and the environment. It draws on a range of incidents covering mining, minerals processing, refining and smelting where inadequately assessed or ineffectively implemented change led to significant safety, environmental or community consequences. The paper will also highlight cases of well-managed complex change and the underlying model of decision-making in place to make those decisions. All these examples are drawn from Atturra’s experience in response to accidents or working with sites to improve their management systems. The paper will report on the challenges of applying conventional risk assessment approaches to complex or technically significant change. These typically result in either onerous and lengthy change procedures that are prone to workarounds or poor implementation. Conversely, ‘light touch’ or efficiency driven change processes present the risk of intended consequences by failing to bring appropriate expertise to bear in decision-making. Such balances can be resolved by considering the designation of ‘technical authority’ with appropriate expertise to consider the change and deconflict any production, cost or schedule trade-offs. Finally, the paper will reflect on the key components of management of change systems in the context of major accidents, highlighting good practice in how they are implemented. This will consider the integration of existing corporate processes, risk management and organisational structures into management of change systems, not just the content of change forms and procedures.

Landform evolution models (LEMs) can assess the effectiveness of landform designs applied to a rehabilitated landform by predicting where erosion may occur. Here, we compare erosion predictions produced by the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM with field observations from the rehabilitated Pit 1 landform of the Ranger uranium mine, based in the Northern Territory, Australia (Figure 1). The ability to predict long-term erosion at a catchment scale is important, as the final rehabilitated Ranger landform is required to physically isolate buried tailings material for at least 10 000 years. CAESAR-Lisflood has been extensively tested and calibrated using data collected from erosion plots (0.09 ha) on the Ranger trial landform (TLF) for multiple years (Lowry et al, 2020; Saynor, Lowry and Boyden, 2019). However, until recently, it was impossible to compare model predictions with field observations for areas larger than the TLF erosion plots. We can now compare model predictions of Life of Mine Conference 2023 | Brisbane, Australia | 2–4 August 2023 116 gully development with field observations from the newly rehabilitated, 40 ha surface of Pit 1 over two contiguous one-year periods: 2020–2021 and 2021–2022. The aim of this study was to assess whether the CAESAR-Lisflood model can successfully predict gully erosion at a larger spatial scale.

Geostatistics is now widely used in the mining industry in the estimation of ore reserves and terms like kriging, variogram and estimation variance are becoming well known. Ordinary Kriging (OK) has been found by some practioners to be a superior tool compared with other ore reserve estimators. However, kriging hasn't been the ultimate solution to difficulties which may arise in ore reserve estimation. Several additional geostatistical techniques have been recently developed for more efficient ore reserve estimation in some deposits, especially gold and other precious metals. These include indicator kriging and probability kriging which are useful tools to work with in a selective mining operation.

Modem occupational health practice can be described as the fitting of work to the individual and each individual to his job; perhaps a non-traditional way to view occupational health. This two-component description is achieved through the development of programs to implement and monitor specific job procedures, from the monitoring of unwanted exposures to contaminants to the auditing of mine sites. This paper is about such programs. Some attempt must be made to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and several performance indicators which are intended to measure the effectiveness of such a program are offered.

The Yinachang deposit in south-west China contains large amounts of Fe, Cu and rare earth elements (REEs). Apatite in this deposit records complex REE mineralisation and remobilisation processes.Fe-Cu-(REE) mineralisation at Yinachang occurred at ~1700 Ma, and three stages of alteration and mineralisation are identified: Na-(Fe) alteration, Fe-(REE) mineralisation and Cu-(REE) mineralisation. In the Fe-(REE) mineralisation stage, REE-rich apatite formed together with magnetite. In the Cu-(REE) mineralisation stage, fluids undersaturated with REEs interacted with early-formed REE-rich apatite, during which large proportions of REEs, especially light REEs (LREEs), were leached from apatite.At ~840 Ma, apatite experienced a second interaction with fluid. In that process, REEs were removed from the apatite structure but immediately reprecipitated into new phases within the apatite. Thus, numerous REE mineral inclusions including bastnaesite, monazite and minor Y-phosphate occur in the apatite. There are also a very small portion of LREEs that were transported out of the apatite, resulting in the growth of bastnaesite and monazite grains outside the apatite.This study demonstrates that REEs can be mobilised in multistage hydrothermal activities and highlights the significance of fluid compositions for REE transportation and deposition behaviours in hydrothermal systems.CITATION:Li, X and Zhou, M-F, 2015. Shane is enjoying his new work. Six months ago, he was stocking shelves at his local supermarket and decided to make the big move to a job in mining with more challenge and, of course, more dollars. He's been through his inductions, received his training tickets and is now working in a crew of eight underground at a fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) operation. There are many more systems and processes here than in his retail job, and Shane's comfortable that his safety is being looked after. He is enjoying the continually changing work and conditions, it makes the job interesting. It's taking some time to get used to the roster and he is worn out by changeover, but he gets more time with friends and family during R & R.   Generally, the mining industry has a maturing safety culture and well developed systems. This sometimes lulls people into a false sense of security. Safety systems cannot anticipate every possible situation, nor can they replace people's perception, thinking and decision-making. To manage safety, it's critical to find the right balance between dependence on systems and a healthy fear and respect of risks we face.   As safety standards are raised, systems tend to get more thorough and complex. When a new person joins a mining crew, we induct and train them to provide the information they need. As labour availability again becomes short, and many new people join our industry, we shouldn't assume they know the fundamentals. We need to explain not only what they are expected to do, but why doing what we ask and expect will keep them safe. We must equip people to deal with both the routine and the unexpected.   This presentation explores the challenges of balancing a structured, systematic approach to safety with the need to also equip people to deal effectively with risks everyday in dynamic and extraordinary situations.   Session purpose Introduce participants to a way of looking at risk from a different perspective, as a force for change and progress, if managed well. Demonstrate that risk is something we need to engage with emotionally as well as physically, if we want our risk management efforts to be successful. This purpose will be achieved through an entertaining and engaging presentation, using photos and case studies. The session will initiate interest to explore new ways of thinking about risk and generate discussion about the balance between people and systems. What is the right balance and why getting it right enhances the safety culture, while getting it wrong can impact on safety, business performance and sustainability.

IN previous discussions on the occurrence of gold in the Bendigo quartz reefs the opinion has been put forward that the gold shoots are primary concentrations in the quartz reefs during the period of vein-formation. The view has been based upon the constant features of the gold shoots in a large number of individual reefs, independent of their depth below the surface. These features include the mineral associations accompanying the gold, the appearance and association of the gold in the quartz, the similarity in all respects (excepting mineral content) between richly gold-bearing quartz and poor quartz, and the variations in mineral content in the reef apart from gold. The view has been supported by a relation of the gold shoots to faults, together with the dependence of the reefs on the existence of pre-mineral faulting. The secondary deposition of gold has only been observed in a few instances .associated with the younger monchiquite dykes, and is of no economic importance.

Gold recovery by the cyanidation process is often accompanied by the leaching of other species. This leads to the depletion of the level of free cyanide and oxygen available for gold cyanidation. The largest proportion of the consumed cyanide is diverted by the cyanicides (eg S, Cu, Zn, Fe, etc) into non-valuable complexes.COREMÆs Extractive Metallurgy team has been conducting a research program on the improvement of the gold cyanidation process. As a part of this program, the current study aims to investigate the effect of certain operating parameters on the reactions involved during preoxidation and cyanidation. Flotation tailings and single mineral samples such as pyrite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite, along with their different combinations, were analysed to highlight the influence of ore mineralogy on the operating conditions. The effects of different kinds of oxidants (oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, ferricyanide and ozone) and chemical additives (ammonium sulfate) were investigated.Experiments conducted in alkaline solutions reveal that mineralogy is a key parameter since pyrite, chalcopyrite and sphalerite react quite differently during preoxidation and cyanidation. A significant increase in sulfur dissolution, especially on pyrite, was observed by applying preoxidation. H2O2 preoxidation showed a positive effect on increasing sulfate formation, a desirable by-product from the cyanide consumption point of view. Preoxidation of synthetic ores with ferricyanide resulted in boosting thiosulfate formation. Tests conducted on flotation tailings from a polymetallic mine revealed that a short preoxidation increases the dissolution of the ore leading to higher gold recovery and lower cyanide consumption. Regarding the formation of thiocyanate, the most undesirable by-product of the cyanidation, ferricyanide and ozone were found particularly efficient to hinder their formation. Some attempts were made to recover uranium from aqueous systems by using various biosubstances including microbial biomass. Of hundreds species of microorganisms tested, extremely high uranium absorbing ability was found in Pseudomonas stutzeri, Neurospora sitophila, Streptomyces albus and Streptomyces viridochromogenes. In parallel to this research, various kinds of biomass and commercially available crude drugs were screened to measure their abilities to adsorb uranium. Of these biosubstances tested, high uranium adsorbing ability was observed in chestnut skin, Comi fructus, Geranii herba and Chaenomelis fructus. From these results it may be considered that the uranium adsorbing ability of these biosubstances is due to the following; the uranyl ion is co-ordinated by the polyphenolic compounds such as tannin existing in the biosubstances. Along with these fundamental researches, we have developed a new adsorbent, the immobilised persimmon tannin (kakishibu tannin), for uranium and thorium. This adsorbent can accumulate 1.71 g of uranium per gram of the adsorbent (14 mEq/g), and the uranium adsorbing capacity of this adsorbent exceeds by several times that of commercially available chelating resins (2 - 3 mEq/g). We attempted to recover uranium from uranium refining waste water by using the immobilised persimmon tannin. As a result, the immobilised persimmon tannin can recover trace amounts of uranium from uranium refining waste water containing 10 - 15 ppb uranium with high efficiency. Almost all of the uranium adsorbed onto the adsorbent can be desorbed by washing with 0.05 - 0.1 M HCl or H2SO4. Thus, the immobilised persimmon tannin can be used repeatedly in the adsorption-desorption Cycle.
