The El Pe±on gold-silver deposit comprises four epithermal, low-sulfidation veins, which contain 2.9 million oz Au and 48 million oz Ag. Provisional data on alteration mineralogy, fluid inclusions, and vein textures constrain the chemistry and hydrology of the hydrothermal system responsible for ore mineralisation at El Pe±on. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, illite, smectite, calcite, chlorite, and pyrite. Alteration minerals suggest the existence of near neutral pH, low salinity hydrothermal fluids, which circulated over an area greater than 18 km2. Complex mineral zonation patterns result from variations in host rock permeability and composition, overprinting alteration possibly produced by thermal waters from surficial and peripheral parts of the hydrothermal system, and supergene weathering in the hyperarid environment. According to the temporal and spatial distribution of regional metallogenesis, thePacific Rim can be divided into four global metallogenetic systems. The Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt is the typical representative of intracontinental metallogenetic systems. This belt resulted from Mesozoic and partly pre-Mesozoic tectonic magmatism, mainly related to S-type granite of crustal source that was generated by collisional orogeny combined with oceanic subduction in intracontinental and continental margin settings. Based on the concept of metallogenetic series, there is a group of mineralised ore types showing a definite spatial and temporal distribution from endogenetic to exogenetic. These metallogenetic series are widely distributed in the Asia-Australia W-Sn metallogenetic belt, and are well developed in Southeast China. Five metallogenetic series and two petro-minerogenesis evolution models have been established according to their tectonic settings, various types of granitoids and metallogenetic evolution.

Since zinc was first deposited at Risdon in February, 1917, provision of the most economical cathode assembly has been a subject of extensive research, the major problems being corrosion and efficient use of power.From the corrosion viewpoint, a perfect cathode is one in which the life of the headbar and the deposition sheet are the same. However, corrosion usually concentrates in a narrow zone across the face- of the sheet, resulting in breakages which, before the advent of argon arc welding, meant a loss of a 'complete assembly.Attempts to extend sheet life included use of thicker sheets, multitudinous protective coatings applied with varying degrees of success, re-rolling, and for a time, aluminium consumption was reduced when broken sheets found re-use as protecting strips. This latter economy became impracticable when electrode spacing was reduced for greater efficiency in power utilization.As an integral part of the electrode, the headbar was modified accordingly. Copper headbars, although more corrosion resistant, were replaced by aluminium due to a possibility of dissolved, copper promoting deterioration.Thicker electrodes and regulated spacing reduced internal shorting, whilst provision of knife-edge type supports on both contact and insulator ends of headbars aided in electrode centralising and continuous electrical conduction.After much experimeIitation, an assembly has been evolved which, with the aid of argon arc welding and tbe use of minimum additional aluminium, permits comparable headbar and sheet lives, combined with good electrical conduction throughout the life of the cathode.INTRODUCTION Over 300 tons of zinc are produced daily at Risdon from a purified zinc sulphate solution by electrolysis, the zinc being deposited upon all-aluminium (except for copper contact) cathodes. It is stripped in 72-hour cycles from the cathodes, melted and cast into the customary rectangular slabs.

Longwall mining originated in the early 18th century in the county of Shropshire in England, where it was known as the longway method. Its name implies the extraction of the seam over a long continuous length or wall of exposed coal. Until the late 19608 and early 1970s the use of the longwall system with a few exceptions was confined to the United Kingdom and Europe. It was not until the early 19708 that the highly productive longwall faces we now know, were developed and the application of the longwall system extended to Australia, South Africa, United states of America and other parts of the world. The modern longwall face has three major components, namely: +         the machine to break and load the coal +         the face conveyor; +         and a system of roof support.   This paper reviews the development of longwall mining technology. The parameters directly influencing the production 'of a modern longwall face are considered, as are the possible constraints to the further development of the longwall system.

This paper reviews them and comments on the potential for further discoveries. Potential markets for these unusual industrial minerals are discussed.

This paper will discuss the issues associated with blasting in an urban mining environment that have been addressed by Winstone Aggregates at the Mt Wellington Quarry. These issues include - control of vibration and air overpressure, repeatability of shot performance, fragmentation on an extremely low maximum instantaneous charge, compliance with Territorial Authority regulations and perception. Over the last two years, in order to address these issues, Winstone Aggregates have undertaken a programme of continuous improvement, which has included; ò implementation of new technology; ò revising site procedures; ò conducting an investigation into the structural response of local buildings; ò investigating safe extrapolation; ò extensive public consultation; ò establishing credibility during the consent process; ò identification of perception issues; and ò building relationships and trust with neighbours. The issues addressed at the Mt Wellington Quarry have increasing significance for traditionally rural mining operations, as the input of the local community being urban or rural, increases. New and existing operations have the potential to adopt best practice now, building trust with the community and raising the profile of the industry.

A pilot steel ladle injection facility designed to assist in the production of high quality steels suitable for use in pipelines has been built and commissioned at the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant at Port Kembla Works.The plant design and the injection procedure are described.The performance of the unit and some metallurgical results are discussed in terms of the addition to the steel ladle of various quantities of calcium silicide and a lime based material. The effects of these additions on sulphur content and inclusion morphology and hence on steel ductility are also presented. The influence of ladle lining on desulphurisation is illustrated.On the basis of the experience gathered in the pilot plant a permanent and more sophisticated injection facility has been designed.

A field method combining solvent extraction and paper partition chromatography permits a simple and rapid semiquantitative estimation of gold in siliceous, argillaceous and sulphide ores. The method will facilitate the eyaluation of prospect samples in which the gold is too fine for separation by panning.Ethyl alcohol-hydrobromic acid mixtures are suitable for chromatographic development of the gold complex, and give clear reproducible definition of the gold zone. Substitution of commercial "methylated spirits" for the ethyl alcohol gives equally good definition, improving the potential of the method for field use.A batch of six samples in the range of 0·5 to 5·0 dwt/ton can be completed in two hours. The range may be extended by simple modification to higher or lower values.INTRODUCTIONIn a chromatographic method described previously (Lever 1958, Nevill and Lever 1959), gold from a standard volume of ore clamped between -plate glass was extracted by aqua regia on to the paper. After cautious drying the chromatogram was developed by an ethyl acetate-nitric acid-water mixture and gold was identified by spraying with stannous chloride solution. Sensitivity of the method in the low range was poor. The brown line obtained in the 1-3 dw/j ton range, caused by movement of gold in the reduced form, was not considered to be a satisfactory confirmation of the presence of gold. It was felt that the method would be improved by using a more elegant extraction and applying developing conditions which would produce a well defined purple line at all gold values. Gold mineralisation at Porgera is inferred to have been derived from a deep differentiated magmatic source which is capped by a series of (now tilted) inward dipping sills and stocks, which comprise the Porgera Intrusive Complex. An arc normal transfer structure provides a conduit, at tile intersection with an arc parallel structure, into which basic magma derived from tile deep melting of mantle material has been emplaced. Two phases of mineralisation display an association with late stage feldspar porphyry intrusives. Stage I carbonate-base metal-style gold mineralisation occurs as early quartz-sericite, then massive sulphide and late zoned Mn-Fe-Mg-Ca carbonate vein/breccias. Magmatic fluids derived from the deep magma source, are interpreted to have migrated along me margin of a feeder stock to the sills, and south to Waruwari. Stage II epithermal Au-Ag quartz-style gold mineralisation occurs as early fluidised breccias and carbonate veining, followed by zoned quartz-roscoelite-carbonate-gold vein/breccias, and late carbonate and/or sulphate open space infill. Magmatic fluids are interpreted to have utilised the same plumbing system as the late stage feldspar porphyry intrusive, and then migrated into the Roamane Fault which was dilated by; dextral rotation on elements of the transfer structure, normal faulting, and refraction around the competent footwall hornblende diorite. Bonanza gold is localised in a jog in the Roamane Fault, hangingwall splits and at intersections with cross structures. Bulk low grade Stage I gold has been deposited by the mixing of magmatic fluids with cool gas condensate waters, whereas high grade Stage II gold mineralisation resulted from the rapid quenching of mineralised magmatic fluids by oxygenated groundwaters.

The process of longwall coal extraction coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata and these fractures become pathways for gas released from adjacent coal seams to flow into the mine workings and contaminate the ventilation air. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the ventilation air, the gas concentration will increase and exceed the statutory limit resulting in production delays.All potential gas sources within the planned mining area, including coal seams located above and below the working seam, should be identified and sufficient gas data collected and used to determine the specific gas emission from each gas source. Gas reservoir and emission modelling is recommended to determine specific gas emission and changes in gas emission from individual sources over the planned mining area. Accurate gas reservoir and emission modelling provides the information required to accurately design gas drainage programs to effectively manage gas emissions and minimise the risk of ‘gas-outs’.Given the increasing occurrence of incidents of gas concentration in ventilation air exceeding the 2.0 per cent statutory limit and changes to mine plans to avoid ‘difficult-to-drain’ areas, it is apparent that many operations are not effectively utilising gas reservoir and emission modelling to identify high gas emission areas and are not completing sufficient gas drainage in advance of planned mining.The process of gas reservoir and emission modelling to support gas drainage design to control tailgate gas concentration and fugitive emissions is presented and discussed.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. A process was developed, on a laboratory scale, for the removal of iron oxides from Weipa pisolitic bauxite. The technique involves the chemical reduction ofthe iron oxides by carbon, followed by selective removal of the iron species by acid leaching or chlorination.To remove more than 90 per cent of the iron it is necessary to reduce the iron oxides substantially to iron metal by heating the bauxite, pre-calcined at 650-800°C, with reactive carbon at 1040-1100°C. Reduction proceeds via the intermediate formation of hercynite (FeO.Al2O3) and difficulties have been encountered in reducing hercynite formed under less favourable reduction conditions.Following reduction, efficient selective removal of iron species is readily effected by acid leaching using dilute hydrochloric acid at 100°C, or chlorination at 500-750°C using Cl2, Cl2/N2, or Cl2/N2/CO mixtures.After removal of unreacted carbon, the final products contain 0·5-1.0 per cent Fe203 and 87-92 per cent Al203.

Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these 'primary' components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

Water use and wastewater management is becoming a focus for many industries around Australia and the rest of the world. Good quality water is increasingly being recognised as a precious resource, and regulations on the bulk storage and discharge of waste streams is becoming more stringent in order to protect the environment, existing water reserves and the communities that use these resources. Components such as heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide, and sulfate from acid mine drainage are some that occur at mining and metallurgical processing sites. Removal of such components can allow safe re-use of these streams, reducing the new water requirements of the process, or else allowing acceptable discharge to the environment. Re-use or discharge of treated water eliminates or reduces the risk associated with storage of large volumes of contaminated water on site.Technologies where a contaminant is selectively precipitated and removed as a sludge are used for many of these treatments. Selection of the best treatment option for wastewater must depend on what is suitable to each site, and consider not only the nature of the contaminant, but also other aspects, including the location and situation of the site, local regulations, cost of reagents, the sensitivity of the local environment and waste sludge disposal options. SMC Resources Limited is implementing a selective mining approach at the Hadleigh Castle mine, formerly operated by Aurora Gold Limited. The main ore zone has a length of 250 metres and dips at 40 - 45¦ to the south. Gold mineralisation occurs in a variety of quartz-sulphide lodes in sericitised granodiorite. Shallow dips, alteration intensity and mineralisation style combine to make mining relatively difficult. Previously unworked, high-grade, shallow dipping (30 - 45¦), narrow quartz-sulphide lodes within the hanging-wall of the deposit are also being selectively exploited. Annual production of 35 000 oz Au is forecast from 185 000 tpa ore grading 6.5 g/t Au over a currently envisaged mine life of six years. Operations completed to-date include deepening the decline and access development of the first two levels beneath the previous workings. Longhole stoping operations have commenced in the main ore zone with air leg stoping also underway in the hanging wall lodes.

As far as is known at the present time, important ore occurrences at Mount Isa are restricted to the Urquhart Shale. These occur at Mount Isa itself, and some 13 miles north along strike at the Northern Leases.The primary silver-lead-zinc and copper orebodies occur as adjacent but discretc entities in lithologieally distinct host rocks. The copper orebodies occur in an envelope of "Silica Dolomite", whereas the silver-lead zinc orebodies occur in shale typical of the Urquhart Shale in general.At both Mount Isa and the Northern Leases, secondary lead orebodies occur at thc surface representing primary stratiform silver-lead-zinc sulphide accumulations in the fresh rocks at depth.Secondary copper orebodies are known only at Mount Isa, where they have formed in favourable environments, but unlike the secondary lead orebodies, not in the positions of the former primary mineralization that gave rise to them. The secondary copper is localized in shale remote from the point where the copper was released into solution by weathering. It was derived from very low grade fracture fillings and disseminations of chalcopyrite in the outcropping or suboutcropping crest of the "Silica Dolomite".Primary silver-lead-zinc orebodies arc oxidized without significant transport or secondary enrichment, but secondary copper orebodies arc characterized by considerable transport and extreme secondary enrichment.The original water table stood at approximately 1,150 ft (mine datum) and for the majority of the mine area controlled the base of complete oxidation fairly closely.An oxidized zone approximately 175 ft deep is general in the Urquhart Shale.Structures affecting ground conditions have influenced oxidation and leaching of the silver-lcad-zinc orebodies, and have had effects vital to the formation of secondary copper orebodies.
