I HAVE to thank the members of the Institute most cordially for the honour conferred upon me in selecting me President, which position my poor services have prevented my filling adequately. I have, therefore only been able to stumble through my year of office under the guiding direction of our esteemed Secretary. I fully appreciate the honour done to me; and, now that it is over, I can look back with pride and pleasure at having occupied the chair; but I am told that it remains for me to fill one of the requirements of our Institute and present you with what has been dignified by the name of a presidential address. My relief in complying with this is in the knowledge of its freedom from the usual discussion which appertains to papers presented by our worthy members. It has been usual in the past for the subject chosen to be specially connected with the work immediately engaging the attention of your president, and on this occasion I would like to break away from this time-honoured custom and engage your attention for a brief space on what is equally dear to us all namely, Ideals of the Profession. The optimisation of slope angles, that is to say, increasing them, compared to the original design is always the subject of analysis of stability for geotechnical engineers and economic analysis for planning engineers. Questions to be answered include: What is the acceptable risk? What factor of safety? What probability of failure or reliability? The Rosario Open Pit has a history of failure, poor quality rocks and high pore pressures. It was decided to deepen the pit below the programmed design to test the practicality of different design approaches, which if successful, could be used to improve the economics of mining at Collahuasi. The revised slope design has factors of safety in the range of 1.0 to 1.2, probabilities of failure of ten to 38 per cent, and increased slope angles of between 3¦ and 5¦ with respect to the original design. The pit deepening with these design slopes will deliver an extra two million tonnes of ore which will have a significant positive impact on mining economics.

Grade control plays an essential role in the good running of a mine. The factors at play are many, starting from a good analysis of the geology and a correct sampling procedure. Once this is achieved (and it is an essential prerequisite), the problem is to adequately define what is ore and what is waste. This paper tries to show, through a small example, how simple geostatistical techniques (variography, and moving average or kriging), can help in accurately defining these limits in a geologically homogeneous zone, thus allowing optimal use of the available information.

The phenomena of nature cannot present themselves to any thinking wild without claiming from it some solution. The earth, as it has often been observed, is laid out like a well ordered cabinet, presenting to us, in measure, some means of judging how the laws of nature and the essential properties of matter have worked out all we see before us. "That there have been depositions of strata gradually laid down aud stocked with the remains of the living objects, vegetable and animal, that flourished when they were being imposed, is an universally acknowledged fact. It speaks of a constantly maintained series of operations whereby the globe has been brought to its present condition, and which are ever advancing it to stages that are still before it. That immeasurable ages have been consumed in effecting these developments is also conceded. We witness the very graduated rate of the existing advances and can see that the past action must have been conducted in the same slow deliberate manner. There are many questions, however, upon which inquirers are not agreed, hence they are still within the domains of fair discussion.What has led to those great climatic changes whereby the same portions of the earth have had at various times climates that were glacial, temperate, and tropical? What causes the constant contortions and dislocations of strata and the upheaval and depression of land levels, and that there is a tendency to alternation in the parallel areas undergoing opposite kinds of movement as if the sinking of one area balanced the rIsing of another? What is the reason that the centres of volcanic action are continually shifting, and that the line of greatest activity is always upon the rising areas? That portions of the earth have been subjected to intense alid long continued volcanic action, and again to long periods of repose, and that the periods of activity and repose are·recurrent at long intervals of time? What the mountain chains of the world are in broadly parallel bands? What has caused the stratified rocks to be tilted from their original?

The Theory of Sampling (TOS) has made remarkable strides and has witnessed a suite of achievements over its ~65-year history; especially in the last 15 years, since organised work began for the erstwhile fragmented sampling community (2003). Theory and practice have been very well exposed and disseminated, as witnessed in the successful series of the World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB) events and other dedicated sampling and mining conferences in Australia and South Africa. At this WCSB8 occasion we fittingly devote a section of our conference to celebrate the life and monumental achievement of Pierre Gy, the originator of the Theory of Sampling; a special issue of TOS Forum was recently published to the same purpose. But TOS is most emphatically not a finished work.Here I try to look into the future with a personal view: TOS – what’s next? Commensurate with this objective there is offered some out-of-the-box thinking. The purpose is to try to zoom in on probable additional future aspects of TOS and its application compared to the first 15 years of our common journey. There are bound to be lacunae here-and-there across the vast application horizon delineated, which is as it should be, as this lecture is meant to initiate a broad(er) debate – and readers may agree with all, parts, or none of the topics presented. The theme of the conference this year is diversification. One way to diversify is through acquisition. The principle underlying the winner's curse is that in competitive bidding situations where the value of the asset bid for is uncertain the winning bid will overstate the true value of the asset. The successful bidder is blessed with the winner's curse. What this paper will explore is to what extent this is true; how acquirers can avoid being blessed with the winners curse; and show how joint venture deal structures are used within the mining industry to avoid the winners curse.

The electrification of Australian mine sites will see a boom in the use of batteries of all chemistries. Lead acid batteries, a traditional mainstay of the mining industry, are expected to nearly double by 2030, however their use will be eclipsed by the explosive growth in lithium batteries. By 2030 the lithium battery market is forecast to be nearly four times the size of the lead acid battery market. Unfortunately, this will result in a corresponding avalanche of waste batteries to be disposed of. Barely a day goes by without battery generated fires being reported in the media and they have become an increasing nightmare for waste management companies and waste facilities. The safe recycling of batteries will also become increasingly important for mine sites to achieve their sustainability goals and reduce their environmental footprint. What are the risks posed by waste batteries, what are the regulatory requirements and how can you manage or eliminate these risks? What current practises does your mine site currently have for the safe management and disposal of batteries from your site? How prepared are you for the coming avalanche of waste batteries?

Consideration of the questions: (i) is it feasible to study groups of processes in a generalised way? (ii) to what extent does purpose affect the form of a process model? (iii) are there any significant, novel investig- ations which can be made by computer simulation? (iv) what long-term developments are desirable in extractive metallurgy? has led to some new broad objectives for research in hydrometallurgical process engineering. Propositions for grouping processes, developing models for different specific purposes, using a systems engineering approach and developing high technology processes are discussed, and the role of computer simulation indicated by reference to particular projects.

The theme i wish to develop in this talk is how we might make use of the scientific and technological knowledge we now have ofextraction metallurgy to meet the present-day needs of the production industry.Before doing so, I would like to say a few words in tribute to Dr. G.K. Williams since he was a past master at precisely what I wish to talk about. I knew G.K., as everybody called him, during the time he spent at Avonmouth in the late 40's and in the 50's. Later, when he was ostensibly retired, I had the pleasure several times of lunching with him when I was visiting Melbourne.When G.K. was at Avonmouth, the Imperial Smelting Process was in that capricious adolescent stage in between the pilot plant and the full-scale commercial unit. G.K. was a great collector of process plant data which hung in cascades from the walls of his office and-from his hand-operated desk calculator. What G.K. understood very well were the basic metallurgical and engineering principles of what was going on in the sinter machine, the shaft furnace and all their ancillaries.

I propose to outline the main social changes which are taking place and their impact on the Minerals Industry. Also the changing way we do business and what are the skills needed to manage that change and diversity. How are Associations and Institutes responding to this ever changing environment? More specifically, what is my Vision for the Institute to assist professionals to achieve greater and continuing professional excellence in their chosen professions?

Current attitudes by exploration companies towards working on another party's exploration permit or equivalent vary widely. That this is so is due to the virtual absence, on the one hand, of anything in the mining legislation in any jurisdiction that establishes what are the exclusive rights to explore, as opposed to apply for a mining tenement, that the grant of such an authority conveys on the holder, and on the other hand, of any code of ethics or set of guidelines to proper practise. By contrast, in most states and territories, if not all, it is an offence to enter onto a mining tenement, other than to cross it, without the consent of the holder, although until recently most field personnel would have been unaware of this and most explorers would have transgressed at one time or another. A similar vacuum exists where aerial surveys are concerned. There are in fact no guidelines. It has always been assumed that a party wishing to carry out such a survey was free to do so, without even an obligation to notify the holders of any tenements or permits in the area to be surveyed, let alone make available to them any data from the survey. Concepts of 'geophysical trespass' now being tested in the US also raise the possibility that data won from adjoining ground using geophysical techniques may be privileged. Attitudes now appear to be changing. In the absence of legislation or any code of practise, what does the industry regard as ethical behaviour? Do we need to define the rights and obligations of various parties more clearly, and if so, what should they be and to what extent will it be necessary to confirm them by legislation as opposed to adopting a code of practise? Will the existence of such a code in fact improve corporate practise?

It is a very great privilege for me to be able to address you tonight and I am deeply sensible of the honour which has been done me. I am equally sensible of the inadequacy of my training for the position of President of your Institute.May I say at once what a very great pleasure it is to have so many members from the mainland States visiting us here in Tasmania. We do hope that you will find pleasure and profit in your stay.Since the Annual Conference is always held in the vicinity of one or other of the great mining fields, it has become the practice for the Presidential address to review the history of the particular field and t(j) indicate its place in the economic structure of the country.I propose to follow this practice and to try and present to you a short picture of thÇ mineral industry as it has existed in Tasmania. None of the information is new it is available in diverse and remote geological reports and in publications such as Witham's Western Tasmania and the more recent Peaks of Lyell. The last composite approach was written twenty years ago by P. B. Nye and published as a Geological Survey Bulletin.I have enjoyed preparing this address because on occasion I find it refreshing to look back and see what was known and what was accomplished in the days when the going was a little tougher than it is now, and to speculate upon the reasons that drove men to do what they did. And it takes more than good organisation. You may read or heard this poignant reflection: We tried hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up in teams we would be reorganised. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by re-organising, and a wonderful method this is for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralisation This was written by the Roman Gaius Petronius in AD65. How much have things changed in nearly 2,000 years? What then does it take besides the fundamentals and good organisation to build a successful career in a successful organisation? I'm prepared to venture a list of what I'll'call Tips for Young Professionals. If you've got what it takes, and apply these, I think that you'll gain a great deal of satisfaction from your career, even if you don't reach the distant target each of you should have in mind now. So settle back in an advice-receiving mode, and please forgive me if I come across as a master of the bleedin' obvious, as Basil once accused his wife Sybil of being in the unforgettable Fawlty Towers.

Every person in an organisation has what could be called ‘a different take’ on what it means to be a safety leader. The directors will tell you they are ultimately responsible for everyone’s safety and that they can be imprisoned as a consequence of a workplace fatality. Managers, take more of a focused approach and would explain that they are totally responsible for the safety of their teams. And then there are front-line leaders. Those that not only have the responsibility (like directors and managers) but they also have the accountability, and the ability, to influence how safely their teams work. But it is not just physical safety that leaders should be concerned with.

A useful way to assess potential productivity of SLC mines is by quantifying tonnes/drawpoint/day to be extracted from the mine. However limited industry information has been published to help mines benchmark this number. This paper assesses industry data which can be used to support estimates of potential productivity from new mines based on tonnes/drawpoint/day. The information used has been extracted from historical production schedules which indicate what was achieved, rather than what was planned. It has been assessed using an algorithm created for the purpose and is presented with discussion of varying definitions of active drawpoints, analysis of the data and inquiry into some of the underlying contributing factors.

The foundation of effective leadership is communication. You can have all the leadership theories, models and training you want, but in the end it is all about leaders talking to, listening to and understanding the point of view of those below and above them.The foundation of effective safety is peoples’ behaviours. Every incident, every near miss and every safe act comes down to what one person does and how that affects themselves and others. We tend to focus these behavioural considerations on the people at the ‘coal face’, those most in harm’s way. But it is the individual behaviours of everyone in the organisation, particularly those at the top, which are just as (if not more) important. The foundation of effective safety leadership in the mining industry is that it starts at the top, with the individual behaviours of leaders. The behaviours of each and every leader will be reflected in their teams. And where their teams are made up of leaders, these leaders will pass these behaviours on to their teams and so on. It’s the sum total of what people see their leaders do and what they do as a result, that creates the ‘culture’ of the business – and it’s this culture that makes or breaks how safely people work.

Attractive mining workplaces are good, safe and healthy environments. They are also workplaces that the workforce of the future wants to work in. As skilled miners and engineers are already scarce, this is important both for today and for the future. However, the future of mining will also be subject to increased international competition. In attempting to become more competitive, many mining companies turn to rationalisation, looking to both rationalise their production and organisation as well as optimise their processes. Work organisation is important in both rationalisation and providing attractive mining work. As a result, this paper investigates a ‘lean production’ (LP) philosophy for the organisation of future mines. The aim of the paper is to investigate to what extent LP can be used to organise for attractive mining. It first defines what attractive mining work is and to what degree it can be influenced by work organisation. A short insight into the LP concept will be given as well as a review of how it is discussed and utilised in mining today. Most new engineers in the mining industry do not realise the importance of legal obligations. During investigations the first question you are asked is: Do you have any proof or evidence? The smallest detail in an underground notebook or a diary entry is able to be used as your proof and/or evidence. The importance of a paper trail is often undervalued and overlooked when you first enter the industry. As a new engineer, all too often your legal obligations, including your duty of care are not given enough consideration. Whose job is it to inform you of what your legal obligations are and when do they end? Everyone has legal obligations at every level of the industry, from graduate to mine manager. The level of these responsibilities varies depending on the position that you hold. When you first start in the industry you need to understand what your responsibilities are and how you are expected to discharge them, whether they are memos, databases or senior sign-offs, etc. In order to fulfil your obligations you must first discharge your own obligation, which in turn discharges those of your department and ultimately those of the mine. As a graduate engineer in the mining industry what I have learnt about my own legal obligations has come directly from my own experience, which will form the basis of this paper.

A gold mine in north-eastern Africa has expanded throughput from 5 to 10 Mt/y in recent years. The original carbon regeneration kiln was incapable of achieving required throughput or meeting process conditions to reactivate the carbon due to heavy fouling by high molecular weight frothers and collectors. A new high temperature kiln was required.The design criteria for the carbon reactivation kiln and associated equipment were revised, then implemented in close cooperation with a kiln vender who had previously supplied kilns operating successfully on highly fouled carbon. The result is a whole facility, holistically designed to achieve the technical criteria.The new carbon reactivation facility has been operating since 1 July 2014. What have we learned? What has performed to expectations? What could be done better?This paper presents lessons learnt regarding the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of the Ausenco Carbon Reactivation Kiln. ‘Lessons’ are associated with threats and opportunities (risks) that have that have been realised.
