The origins of instrument application in the Mineral Industry are discussed. Development of measurement techniques pertinent to the industry is described as is the early application of mini-computers. The current application of microprocessor based equipment and the benefits obtained from this range of equipment are discussed. A speculative opinion as to what future instrument development may offer the industry is outlined.

In-field sampling programs generally take time, equating to money, and unless you have an onsite laboratory, you have the issue of having to wait long periods for your data. Until recently, field portable X-ray fl uorescence (FPXRF) analysers, which can help provide instant indicative results, were not able to detect penalty elements, such as Al and Si, or do so reliably enough to act upon.The purpose then of this field test then was to show that the latest FPXRF devices are capable of producing reliable readings on field samples of variable grain size, in particular for Al and Si, such that the readings still correlate well with the assay for those samples and thus be reliable for an iron ore grade control application.We tested RC chip samples on-site in the Pilbara, Western Australia, with the Niton, analysing for a range of elements including Fe, Mn, Al and Si and then compared the results for those elements against assay data for the same. A strong correlation would tell us that the FPXRF results were reliable. Furthermore, to show the effect of simple sample preparation, we also analysed pulps of the same samples in the same way.The correlations were good for the all of the four elements of interest for the RC chip samples (R2 values between 0.82 and 0.9), and excellent for the pulps (R2 values between 0.89 and 0.998).The results also showed a direct correlation between sample preparation and improved quality of results with the FPXRF.The data showed allowed for two conclusions:1. the FPXRF can produce data from unprepared RC chips for Al and Si that, when compared with assay, is reliable for a fi eld application in drilling and grade control; and2. the greatest limitation to data quality is sample preparation.

For decades, organisations worldwide have been working to overcome challenges associated with new technology adoption while keeping up with rapid growth, development, and globalisation. In minerals processing, the challenges in developing and implementing solutions that contribute to the mining value chain are unique from other markets, as mining operations expect that world-class suppliers provide them solutions to gain a competitive advantage in their operation, production, performance as a financial asset, and as a long-term partner as we move into the future of mining. A simple shift in mindset is proven key to successful technology implementation. Change leaders must no longer think of their expertise in the area of application as their only responsibility; they must make a mental shift and see themselves in dual roles that strive to integrate the perspectives and needs of both developers and users. Successful change leaders must: (1) collaborate, seeking user involvement to ensure fit between product and operational needs, (2) demonstrate commitment to receive new technology, and (3) communicate to achieve an eventual shift of ownership from supplier to users that is seamless. Additionally, this strategy contributes to the mining value chain, as it allows developers and implementers to evaluate how change contributes to the asset’s position both within the company and in the commodities market. This paper will explain the shift in perspective for new technology implementation in detail and provide recommendations that operations can emulate, using examples of real challenges and lessons learned during a commissioning of the CYCLONEtrac™ Particle Size Tracking (PST) system at Cerro Verde’s C2 Concentrator. This concentrator has led technological change for plant optimisation, witnessed improved Net Metal Production (NMP), among other benefits with PST, the only technology in the market capable of providing real-time, online, and direct particle size measurement at the individual hydrocyclone level

Bulk cargoes, including iron ore fines, must be shipped according to the rules agreed by the member states of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). One critical safety measure is the transportable moisture limit (T?ML) required for Group A cargoes (cargoes that may liquefy). A number of shipping incidents involving iron ore fines from India, where liquefaction of the cargo was suspected to be the cause, have brought the issue of iron ore fines T?ML into the spotlight. Extensive research has been undertaken by the major iron ore producers from Australia and Brazil to support the IMO in developing regulations for the shipment of iron ore fines. To this end, iron ore companies sponsored the AMIRA P1097 project to establish a modified T?ML test approach specific to iron ore fines. The project was undertaken by TUNRA Bulk Solids, CSIRO’s Centre for Bulk Solids and Particulate Technology and the University of Auckland, with project leadership provided by Creative Process Innovation. Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), completed the restart of the Bloom Lake iron ore mine located in the heart of the Labrador Trough region of Northern Quebec, Canada in February 2018. Prior to its restart, the concentrator flow sheet underwent major upgrades which brought the iron recovery to the highest of all Labrador Trough operations. After two profitable years of production, QIO, supported by Soutex, started to look at technologies to improve its current performance and integrate into its expansion project flow sheet. From the lessons learned while optimising Phase 1, the addition of a scavenger-cleaner processing stage was identified as an improvement opportunity to increase recovery, produce a higher-grade product, and further improve the stability of concentrate quality. In 2019, the NI-43101 feasibility study for the Phase 2 expansion, aiming to double the production of high-grade iron ore concentrate, was published. Based on the metallurgical test work, the hydraulic classifier was selected to perform the scavenger-cleaning duty for its well-established performance and known behaviour at the cleaning step in the Phase 1 plant. To validate laboratory results, a pilot scavenger-cleaning hydraulic classifier was installed in Phase 1. Although the hydraulic classifier was selected for the feasibility study, metallurgical test work performed with the REFLUX® classifier showed interesting potential. It was thus decided to also install a pilot RC300 Reflux classifier at the scavenger-cleaning stage in Phase 1. Despite their apparent great similarities, the metallurgical performance was significantly different, and many dozens of sampling campaigns highlighted the different performance of both pieces of equipment considering the feed material particle size. This article presents the pilot plant results in terms of recovery, selectivity and stability for both the Reflux classifier and the hydraulic classifier operated in a scavenger-cleaner stage at the Bloom Lake iron ore concentrator.

The northern Bowen Basin has a very large resource of coalseam methane gas-in-place - 136 TCF(7ohnson and White, 1988). The gas is pipeline quality, being 98-99 per cent methane with traces of carbon dioxide and higher hydrocarbons. The largest resource of natural gas within the coalseams of the northern Bowen Basin is contained in the Moranbah Coal Measures (75 per cent). The next most important resource is in the combined upper Fort Cooper (16 per cent) and Rangal (nine per cent) Coal Measures. The far northern parts of the basin have low gas contents due to the combined effects of limited extent of the coal measures, shallow depth and low rank. Reserves per well are more than double that of the best coalseam methane wells in any basin in the United States. In some areas of the Moranbah Coal Measures, the gas-in-place estimates exceed 225 million cubic metres per well (80-acre spacing). A distinction is made between resource base, as determined from this basin assessment, and the deliverability potential. Parameters used to estimate gas-in-place (coal area, thickness, density, rank and depth) can be adequately extrapolated from areas of high- to low- data density. Parameters affecting methane production (permeability, gas depletion factor and critical desorption pressure) cannot be generalised. Exploration and development programs must rapidly develop a predictive capability for these factors, on a local scale, through geological modelling and confirmation drilling.

There is a significant amount of historical mining and exploration information available. This information is often distributed throughout a number of reports or plans, available from a variety of sources, and in many differing formats. The ability to capture paper-based historical information in a modem digital format provides mining and exploration companies with valuable information that can be used in a number of ways; for example, reassessments of exploration or mining work previously undertaken, or used in conjunction with current exploration information.   The purpose of this paper is threefold. Firstly, to present the paper-based historical information; highlighting some of the problems encountered, solutions to those problems, and any assumptions used. Secondly, to present the historical data in digital format, and demonstrate the tools available to analyse geological and associated information, and finally, to illustrate some of the potential future applications of the information, including mining optimisation, mine design and scheduling.   The Glenorchy scheelite/gold prospect has been used as an example. Within the overall prospect two smaller areas were selected. The Mount McIntosh and surrounding areas, focuses on exploration and surface excavation information. The Mount Judah area (State and Kelly-Taylor workings) focuses on underground mining and exploration information.

The valuation of resources companies is open to a huge amount of subjectivity. Not only are valuations subject to fast changing assumptions, such as commodity prices, exchange rates, ore grades, etc., but there is also no common agreement on the methodology to be used. To borrow from Malcolm Fraser, life wasn't meant to be easy for the resource company valuer. I will demonstrate three recent examples of valuations carried out but where the market or actual transactions done show very different results.

Operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions which are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them. From a technical perspective, the noise presents an opportunity to determine some details of the processes occurring inside the mills. The noise generated is not random and can be attributed to a range of events that occur inside these mills, consequently non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour provide powerful insights into the operation of primary comminution tumbling mills. To enable a logically coherent picture to be formed of the processes inside a mill, arrays of microphones have been used. This approach allows a clearer picture of the in-mill behaviour of the charge to be accessed. In contrast to single microphone approaches, usually located near the expected charge toe position, an array of microphones allows much more useful information to be obtained from grinding mill noise.This paper will discuss and present data obtained from microphone arrays positioned at the toe and shoulder locations of a mill, and how this information can then be used for the optimisation of grinding mills in real-time.CITATION:Pax, R A, 2012. In large coal strip mines, there are many different processes at work: stripping, overburden removal using trucks/shovels, cast blasting, slot dozer pushing, more fragmentation and further truck/shovel benches. A key component to each of these steps is the use of machines. In modern operations, most machine costs are tracked within Enterprise systems that transact costs and repair work order management. Similarly, in contemporary mines most machines are tracked using technology that provides precise performance measures for each key process. Such technologies include productivity monitors on draglines, dozers and drills and fleet management systems for trucks and shovels. Linking these two sources of seemingly disparate data û costs and performance by machine û would allow for the precise calculation of unit costs by specific machine. This is similar to an activity-based costing system, except in this machine-based system, calculations are made at an even finer granular level. There are many uses for such an integrated information system in mine planning and performance management, both in real-time and through historical analysis.A real-time fleet costs (FLC) measurement process was developed as part of a larger blending-related, multi-million dollar project centred on a centralised remote control room developed at the University of ArizonaÆs Mining Information Systems and Operations Management Mine Control Center. The FLC component of the overall blending system would allow a mine controller to manage the equipment fleet by viewing its cost in real time and, when mixed with other revenue-related components, the exact profit. For example, a mine controller may show high utilisation while still maintaining a production surplus. This could occur, for example, if the equipment is driven long distances. This might appear in traditional performance metrics as æhigh production performanceÆ, but in reality may prove less profitable. This paper discusses the technical development of the FLC, its deployment and its impact on controller performance, and compares mine profitability before and after its application.

Redpath Australia is using a unique mining method for the Australian underground coal industry at Kestrel Mine Extension in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland.The project involves completing two separate drifts from the surface for access to the German Creek Coal Seam located approximately 230 m below the existing surface. The scope of work is primarily the construction of two drifts; the first is 1577 m at 1 in 6 gradient and the second 1874 m at 1 in 8 gradient. Each drift has been developed by a Mitsui S200 roadheader with modifications to allow for a continuous tunnelling/mining cycle operation. A shotcrete boom has been fitted to the left hand side of the machine with the operators console located at ground level. Another operators console is elevated on the right hand side of the machine to allow operation of the rotary drill boom which is mounted on a slide rail to allow flexibility of positioning depending on the stage of the cycle. In support of the roadheader activities, an integrated conveyor system mounted on a sliding floor arrangement is able to be advanced as the mining face progresses. This sliding floor consists of four 1.5 m × 6 m sections that utilise hydraulic rams to ‘walk’ inbye, allowing room for installation of precast concrete floor panels for final floor completion. This method borrows from the tunnelling and construction industries to eliminate place-change delays in the mining cycle by enabling complete ground support installation without retreat of the primary development machine from the face. The aim is to reduce the project duration with the completion of final floor and services to within 30 m of the operating face as it advances.

The current climate in the mining industry is allowing mining companies to further broaden their views and investigate technologies to improve the safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of their operations. Furthermore, underground mine environments will become more demanding for mining equipment and personnel as orebodies become deeper in weaker ground conditions with more extreme environmental conditions. Loading and hauling can represent significant components of the production cycle of an underground mine and automation of these activities can offer considerable benefits. Sandvik has accumulated a long history and experience in loading and hauling automation in underground mining. Since the late 1980s Sandvik has actively participated in several major research and development automation programs leading to the commencement of the development of an integrated system for semiautomated loading in 1999. Development work was later conducted to expand the capabilities of the system for automated hauling during 2001 and the AutoMine« system became commercially available. The first delivery of the AutoMine« system was completed in August 2004 in South America, where the system continues to operate in a full-scale production environment and is being expanded as the production area enlarges. Further systems have been delivered and are operational in North America, Africa and Europe. This paper focuses on the AutoMine« system deployed in Block 4 at De Beers Finsch Mine in South Africa. An overview of the mine and the process used to acquire the system and the key drivers which led to the selection of an automated solution are described. An overview of the initial system installation, subsequent expansions and future plans are presented. This is followed by a summary of the implementation and operational experiences associated with automated underground operations. The paper concludes by summarising the benefits that have been realised.

The increasing use of continuous miners in the extraction of high coal seams has amplified the need for enhanced ventilation systems in the headings. Owing to larger face dimensions and higher production rates, more ventilating air is required to effectively dilute liberated methane to acceptable concentrations. However, the increased air quantities raise and entrain greater amounts of dust, to which the operator is subjected. Various methods (eg sprayfans, on-board scrubbers and jet fans) are used in various configurations and combinations to ventilate the headings. These arrangements generally result in a complex air flow pattern, which complicates achieving an optimum balance between diluting methane and minimising dust capture. In order to cost effectively investigate and propose solutions to this problem for the South African coal mining industry, the Division of Mining Technology has embarked on an extensive work program to evaluate various ventilation methods presently in use. Four currently generic ventilation patterns in various heading scenarios have been simulated using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) computer program. Evaluating these outputs against a predetermined set of criteria allows the best system for a particular situation to be chosen. The program also facilitates fine-tuning of an adopted system without incurring the cost and inconvenience of doing such tests in situ. This process not only provides solutions at significantly reduced costs, but also yields deeper insights into the factors affecting heading ventilation than hitherto possible.

In the Mount Victor area of the Eastern Highlands Province, re- connaissance geological mapping and new micropalaeontological data have revealed the existence of at least three small thrust- bound windows exposing late Middle to Late Cretaceous (Late Aptian-Early Albian and Late Santonian-Maastrichtian) sedimen- tary rocks and pillow lavas, Latest Paleocene- Earliest Eocene pillow lavas, and Latest Paleocene-Earliest Eocene bathyal micrites. Late Middle Eocene to Late Eocene inner neritic bioclastic micrite units also occurs in thrust contact with Middle Miocene Yaveufa Formation volcanolithic conglomerates. The Cretaceous and Early Tertiary units appear to be thrust-bound and are best exposed in a window just south of Mount Victor, and in two smaller windows to the east. The inner neritic Eocene limestone occurs in a thrust-bound sliver within the Yaveufa For- mation near Obura. The windows occur within extensive out- crop of Early Miocene Omaura Formation and the Yaveufa For- mation. Thin-bedded grey mudstone, siltstone and sandstone, typical of much of the Chim Formation form only a small part of the exposure of Cretaceous rocks. Thick-bedded volcanolithic conglomerate, spilitic pillow basalts, and welded basic tuffs domi- nate the Cretaceous section. The stratigraphy and structure of the Mount Victor area is similar to the Menyamya area, the Aure Scarp, and perhaps the Tapini area. This study has raised the possibility of widespread thrust- ing in the Kainantu area, and suggests that the boundary between the Omaura and Yaveufa Formations is thrusted, at least locally.

The Telfer Underground sublevel cave (SLC) Operation is located approximately 850 m below surface. The cave was designed to propagate through an old decline which was initially used to monitor the cave. There was a requirement to install air blast plugs at two locations in the old decline in order to isolate any potential air-blasts from the active workings in the event of the rock mass collapsing into the cavity. There was a further requirement for an air-blast plug in another section of the mine where there was a risk of the cave intersecting an old workshop and providing an air-blast pathway through an abandoned incline. The design criteria for the plugs was that they should withstand the design air blast loading, be free draining, cost effective and easily constructed with the mining expertise available on site. A plug consisting of grouted mullock was considered robust and least challenging to construct. For the purpose of estimation of maximum air pressure on plugs, it is supposed as a worst case that the rock above a cave falls as an airtight piston onto the top of a muck pile, forcing air into it and also mine workings intersected by the cave. Airflow through the muck pile is governed by Ergun's equation for turbulent flow. In a time-stepping integration scheme, transient air pressures and velocities are calculated according to equations of thermodynamics, in the cave and at intervals along intersected drives by means of a finite difference spatial discretisation. The ability of plugs to withstand computed pressures is assessed by finite element elastoplastic analysis. This paper outlines the rationale for potential air blast loading, calculation of transient air pressures, plug design and analysis of plug behaviour. The plug construction method is also discussed.

A key issue in maintaining the mining industryÆs social contract to access community-owned resources, is the need to be able to demonstrate professional management of resource extraction and the risk associated with mining hazards. Significant failures such as disease relating to coal dust and asbestos and mine disasters such as Moura, Appin and Gretley have resulted in judicial and legislative interventions that respond to the community outcry but do not necessarily effectively manage the longer term risk in a sector driven by new technology. With the implementation of recent amendments to the Queensland Professional Engineers Act, senior engineers in all industries including the mining industry are required to be registered and to demonstrate that they have æmaintained competency in the practice of engineering in the area of engineering for which the (engineer) is ... registeredÆ. This may be facilitated through a report produced by an æAssessing EntityÆ. These entities are approved by the Minister on advice from the Board of Professional Engineers, Queensland. Engineers Australia and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) are the two professional bodies approved as æassessing entitiesÆ charged with facilitating successful implementation of the process established by the legislation. The scope of the legislation covers engineering enterprises in Queensland and engineering activities elsewhere that may have been designed in Queensland. There is currently a challenge to determine what the necessary health and safety competencies for the mining industry are and how the maintenance of these competencies will be assessed. The different approaches taken by the two assessing entities are compared and contrasted. At the legislative level, establishing an obligation to assess professional competency is simple, but at the level of the profession, it is new ground that warrants a substantial research and development input. The challenge is to develop criteria by which the quality of such system can be assessed. The comparison is made by considering such issues as equity, effectiveness, efficiency, objectiveness and transparency. These five indicators are considered in terms of how they are applied in other sectors and how they might be applied in the mining sector.

Given the ongoing global crises of climate change and nature loss, with the World Economic Forum (WEF) identifying them as the top risks to global economies in terms of both likelihood and impact in the coming ten years (WEF, 2022), there is increasing, pressing demand for companies to demonstrate they understand their climate and nature related risks and look toward contributing genuine beneficial environmental outcomes. Within the mining industry, mine closure is the obvious field in which climate and nature positive strategy can be linked with operations. To do so, there is a need to challenge long-held assumptions around closure in the mining and regulatory context; particularly, to shift the focus from closing individual mines to considering regional opportunity generation and value creation.

Study on Basic Theory of the Grain Settlement in Fluidised Bed This paper takes thick goal grains (less than 1.5 cm) as research object. According to different densities and particle sizes, thick goal grains are divided into 20 kinds of narrow density and narrow size level average grains. Free settling and hindered settling tests are respectively carried out in ?100 fluidised bed thick goal separators. Hindered settlement includes hindered settling velocity test and measurements of suspension density. Results show follows. (1) Fluid state in separator belongs to transition region. Alien's law is the appropriate formula of thick coal particles free settlement terminal velocity. (2) The main factors affecting hindered settling velocity are the number of solid particles in medium and the structure feature of the particle group. The bigger volume fractions of solids ? is, the smaller decreasing velocity coefficient of particle hindered settlement ¯ becomes. In the organism from bottom to top, density of suspended particles in fluidised bed gradually decreases, but near the top of the suspended particles, the density increased slightly. With increase of density and size, suspension density reducing extent increases from bottom to top of separators.

Valuers will often intuitively express the probability that property value will exceed a certain amount . . . 'I think the chances that the value will exceed $50 million are excellent. The chances that they will exceed $80 million are poor'. This paper shows how it is possible to combine the uncertainties of the value of several key items to provide an estimate of the probability of a certain overall value being achieved. The valuation of a large copper/gold deposit was naturally influenced by uncertainties in the base assumptions of costs and metal prices. Potential acquisition of the property through share purchase raised the issue of what was a reasonable intrinsic value for the shares. Market considerations could be used to appropriately adjust the intrinsic value. After a range of possible metal prices and operating costs were determined, estimates were made of their probable distributions. By combining these probabilities in a random selection, a range of property values was calculated. Each value had its respective probability of occurrence. This allowed a most likely value of shares to be calculated. This paper demonstrates how the valuer's intuition is complemented by numerical analysis.
