Modem occupational health practice can be described as the fitting of work to the individual and each individual to his job; perhaps a non-traditional way to view occupational health. This two-component description is achieved through the development of programs to implement and monitor specific job procedures, from the monitoring of unwanted exposures to contaminants to the auditing of mine sites. This paper is about such programs. Some attempt must be made to evaluate the effectiveness of the program and several performance indicators which are intended to measure the effectiveness of such a program are offered.

The overall mineral assemblage of the Broken Hill orebody is similar to that of a skarn. However unlike the classical skarns it does not represent contact metamorphism of pre-existing limestone beds. It is a stratiform accumulation of exhalative-sedimentary silica, sulphides, (Ca, Fe, Mn) silicates and carbonates, fluoride and phosphate that has later undergone regional metamorphism. The resulting development of coarse-grained quartz, sphalerite, galena, rhodonite, bustamite, mixed carbonates, fluorite, apatite and many minor phases has produced a sulphide-rich skarn- like mass that like many others of its kind, might best be referred to as a stratiform skarn. Recent investigations of occurrences of this type are showing that the incidence of concentrations of particular metamorphic minerals in and adjacent to such orebodies are closely related to bedding and to former sedimentary facies patterns. From this it appears that the mineral assemblages may be used to deduce not only the nature of the materials laid down in the beds, but also the physico-chemical conditions under which sedimentation took place. Several stratiform deposits, including Broken Hill, are used as examples to show that variations in these conditions may have a profound influence on the subsequent response of the rock to regional metamorphism and hence on the mineral assemblages that finally develop.

Laboratory scale simulation experiments show that the adsorption capacity of Au(CN)Z- on activated carbon in the presence of organic plant contaminants is dependent on the particle size of the carbon. This observation suggests that fine carbon in a CIP contactor can protect coarse CIP carbon from fouling in a dirty CIP plant. A preliminary test of this concept was made using fine lignite coal as the organic scavenger in the presence of the CIP carbon Calgon GRC22 in an alkaline cyanide solution containing Teric 401, sodium ethyl xanthate and kerosene.

The Republic of Kazakhstan has well developed mining and metallurgical complex. In modern conditions, when deposits of useful minerals are running thin, it is very important to find additional sources for obtaining necessary products. As our investigations showed different kinds of waste may be used for producing of different kinds of products, which are successfully applied in different branches of KazakhstanÆs economy. Analysis of ways for increasing of complex use of mineral raw materials of different deposits, widening raw mineral materials base and decreasing negative effects on the environment, are presented in this paper.

The outlook for suppliers of energy to the expanding economies of the Pacific Basin region is essentially positive, but particularly for exporters of high quality steam coal. This paper argues that economic growth in the Pacific Basin region has exceeded world economic growth for some years and that this will continue to be the case for the next decade at least. It looks briefly at the link between economic growth and energy demand and at the relationship between energy demand and the demand for electricity.Changing preferences in fuel mix for electrical generation in the region are noted and tentative forecasts made about variations in this mix. The pros and cons of various forms of fuel used to generate electricity are considered from the point of view of the consumer.

The paper describes a mineral potential mapping of gold and other base metals in Mahneshan area, Iran, using geographical information system (GIS), in which, the method of weights of evidence is used to combine spatial data obtained from different sources to make prediction for mineral potential. This is a quantitative tool for mineral resource mapping that can be used to delineate and predict favorable areas for further exploration by using the characteristics of known and similar mineral deposits. In accord with the descriptive model for gold and other base metal deposits, the spatial distribution of 20 known mineral occurrences was used. In addition, digital evidential maps were used in this study. The maps include maps of lithological units, faults and first derivative of total aeromagnetic data, remotely-sensing data of alteration and also geochemical evidential maps produced on the basis of the results of chemical analyses of samples taken from the stream sediments in the area, and analysed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Sb, As, Ag, Au, Ba and Hg elements. The binary maps were produced and then combined with the model of weights of evidence using 20 known mineral occurrences to obtain a final map of the favourable areas for further exploration of gold and other base metals in the study area. The final map is a predictive GIS model of the mineral deposits in the area. An interesting matter about the final predictive GIS model is that the faults are mainly located in favorable areas which possesses the most probability of mineralisation. Therefore, the faults in these areas have priority for further exploration of gold and others base metals.

Alluvial gold mining is thriving in the Yukon Territory and Alaska. The scale of many operations is similar to those in New Zealand but there is greater government support for research and test work. As a result a great deal of information on equipment for the recovery of alluvial gold has been obtained. This paper is a review of the information with the aim of making relevant data available in New Zealand.

The AusIMM/AMIC code for reporting Reserves seeks to improve the calibre of professional reporting on this subject. But have they gone far enough? Should the code appreciate that the degree of reliability of estimates required will vary with the type of mining planned? How does one "confirm continuity" as required by the code? The aim of optimum development drilling is to achieve appropriate ore zone definition for acceptable estimates of reserves and their economic extraction. Can this procedure be in conflict with the code? How does it affect finance decisions?

Although inherent mineral matter appears to have no effect of the reflectivity of inertinite in the reflecting light microscope, it has a marked effect on the grey levels resulting from the backscattered electron response in the scanning electron microscope. Inertinite with a high inherent mineral matter content has a high grey level response but not as high as that of mineral matter. The highest grey level response is with inertodetrinite which at times could be mistaken for mineral matter. Fusinite has a higher grey level response than semi-fusinite. The backscattered electron grey level response corresponds to average atomic number and hence approximately to density. If a porous structure develops and becomes filled with mineral matter such as S, Cl, Ca, Si, and Al the grey level will be higher. Micrinite has an unusual response in that it behaves like an exinite maceral in the SEM rather than an inertinite maceral. It either has a low grey level when relatively free of inherent mineral matter, or a low grey level background with high level granules corresponding to Si and Al dominantly. Similar structures have been found in exsudatinite and resinite. It is thought that micrinite results from the migration of hydrocarbons out of exinite giving a porous structure which usually accommodates inorganic matter.

With recent advances in machine learning, data-based automated decision-making has been proven successful with promising outcomes in many industries. Its application in the mining sector can be ground-breaking; particularly the data-driven analytics that can support decision-making in the mine and consequently enhance mine safety, efficiency and sustainability. However, the current data science applications in the mining industry are mostly noncomprehensive, especially inadequate in evaluations, thus often requiring further study to be potentially beneficial to operations. Furthermore, it was found that existing literature paid limited attention to understanding the role of such techniques. Hence, in this paper we aim to build an end-to-end machine learning powered data-driven framework for intelligent geo-hazard analytics to support decision-making for underground mining data management, where multiple types of data are managed in an integrated database to support the unified machine-learning model. Here we present the framework as data-driven workflow processes, including data gathering, data preparation, data processing and data presentation. In addition, we present an application scenario of the proposed framework, where falls of ground (FoG) is managed with the historical FoG investigation reports, related panel hazard ratings, compliance data and rock mass characteristics. A demonstration can be dynamic forecasting of high-risk areas for FoG based on both spatial and temporal factors, including a 3D data visualisation. Such a scenario shows the potential of the proposed framework to establish connections among various data fields across a diverse category of data. Furthermore, the results offer important insights for ground instability management and can potentially optimise the underground operation flow.

There is today widespread concern about the future of the mining industry. In attempting to understand the underlying causes the paper probes in some detail, the long term structural changes affecting growth of metal demand and the development of excess mineral supply capacity. This examination reveals an industry characterised by an unfavourable combination of high barriers to exit and low entry barriers. While rising entry barriers are expected to herald some improvement in the profitability of mining over the next decade, this adjustment is likely to be slow and will require a more economically rational assessment of the industry by corporations and governments Alike.

The management of waste from mining operations is a significant aspect of bringing a mineral commodity to final market. The ore beneficiation process and transport/disposal of waste involves significant consumption of costly resources. A number of options exist to dispose of mill waste on surface and as a backfill material. These range in complexity, risk, capital cost, operating cost and ultimately business performance. This paper discusses the value delivered to a business in using dewatering systems including paste as opposed to conventional slurry tailings disposals. This is illustrated through various case studies and serves to demonstrate how paste can add value and reduce risk to a successful business.

The Phoenix mine on the Mararoa Reef at Norseman, Western Australia, provides an outstanding: AUstralian instance of the recurrence of payable ore beneath the bottom of an abandoned mine, and an interesting and instructive example of the development ofideas with regard to ore recurrence in a particular district. The Mararoa Reef is the most productive of several hypothermal goldquartz vains in pre-Cambrian basic volc81olics which strike northsouth and dip on the average, 45 degrees east. The Phoenix minewas abandoned at 500 ft. vertical depth after producing 342,000 tons of 9.9 dwt. recovery grade (equivalent to nearly half of the total production of the Norseman field) from a 2,500 ft.. long, horizontally disposed oreshoot, which is reported to have had an ore outcrop only 30 ft. in length.Interest in the field was revived in 1933, and by 1941 new ore mined and developed on the Mararoa Reef by Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. amounted to approximately 700,000 tons of 6.7 dwt. recovery grade. In the same period another oreshoot of similar size and grade was developed by Norseman Gold Mines N.L., south of the old Mararoa company's site. As shown by the plans, the ore occurs in discontinuous shoots. The intervening area of shear is poor in quartz as well as in gold. Geological work on behalf of Western Mining Corporation Ltd., and Central Norseman Gold Corporation N.L. has been in progress in the mine and in the field more or less continuously from 1913 to 1941 and again since 1946. This paper describes the successive advances in the understanding of the exploratory problem up to late 1941, to which several investigators have contributed. Extensive use is made of a small scale computer (IBM 1130), in the calculations of ore reserves for Western Mining Corporation's nickel mine at Kambalda, W.A. All surface drilling data such as assays, density and location information, are stored on disk files at the Company's Technical Computing Centre at Perth, W.A. The computer is used to search through the data, select significant ore intersections, calculate the area of influence of each intersection and perform the necessary calculations to arrive at an estimate of the ore reserve. "The efficiency of the truck-shovel haulage system is significantly influenced by the truck fleet size. A discrete event simulation model with 3D animation has been developed to estimate the productivity of a truck-shovel network system, shovel efficiency, truck cycle time, truck utilisation and the optimal fleet size. The simulation model considers the dynamic variability of traffic conditions and also the truck as an individual entity. This study relates to the spongillite deposits from the region of Jopo Pinheiro, in the north-west of the State of Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. The deposits occur in shallow ponds (with a maximum depth of 3.5 m) on a karstic planation surface developed on rocks of the Spo Francisco Neoproterozoic Supergroup. Cenozoic detritic covers are associated with this surface. The field study of spongillite deposits from the Preguita and Avipo deposits revealed sedimentological and pedological similarities between the different deposits. They have a lenticular shape and contain different layers of sedimentary spicules intercalated with layers of quartz sand and clay minerals. Representative samples from the different layers investigated by X-ray diffraction, differential and gravimetric thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed a range from three to 80 per cent of amorphous silica (opal) corresponding mostly to the sponge spicules in the sediments. Optical microscopic investigation determined that the spicules predominantly belong to the sponge Metania spinata. This species is represented by smooth megascleres (alpha type), prickly megascleres (beta type) measuring 240 to 450 mm in length, as well as the spiny microscleres; whereby the smooth megascleres are larger and thinner. The morphological variation of the spicules as well as the presence of more fragmented spicules towards the base of the deposits, portray a variation in texture and in the state of their preservation along the profile, suggesting environmental variations at the time of their formation and deposition.

UNDER a contract relating to the sale of a Broken Hill concentrate, the differentiation between granular and slime concentrate is determined by the proportion of the material which will pass a 200-mesh (I.M.M. standard) screen, and this has led to considerable attention being devoted to the question of laboratory sizing tests with screens of this order.It was found that many of the screens turned out by the makers during the war, and also since its termination, did not conform with the I.M.M. specifications as closely as some supplied in pre-war days. A perfect screen is hardly to be expected, but when the above contract was framed the parties anticipated that, by special care being taken during manufacture, a screen at least as good as the best pre-war screens would be available. This, however, has not proved to be the case, and the large irregularities in screens recently supplied render them useless for sizing determinations under the contract. The four major contracts for the construction of Museum Station are: 1) Installation of Soldier Piles, 2) Structural Contract including the temporary support, 3) Architectural Finishes which include Electrical and Mechanical Services and 4) Supply and Installation of lifts and escalators. Specific areas of interest include the fabrication, installation and removal of temporary support steelwork, the monitoring of ground loading, and the interface between the structure and. the temporary support. The information collated during construction confirmed the design assumptions and criteria. No major changes'were required in the design of the construction methods. The open cut excavation and construction of this major structure in an inner city area was significant by any standard and was successfully completed with minimum disruption to the public and without damage to adjoining or surrounding property.

Particles of nickel flash furnace malle (45 per cent i) were oxidized in a dropping-particle furnace. The particles melted and the molten drops simulated those produced by the atomization of molten matte. The partly oxidized droplets were quenched and then reacted with silica flux to form high-grade matte (70 per cent i) and a fayalite slag. This paper describes the experimental equipment and deals with chemical aspects of the investigation such as volatile impurity distribution and thermodynamic considerations. The overall behaviour of minor elements such as Cu, Co, As and Pb was similar to that observed in conventional converting.
