At the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited, impurities toxic to the electrolytic production of zinc metal, notably arsenic and antimony, have traditionally been coprecipitated when precipitating iron as ferric hydroxide. With the development of a new lead/zinc mine at Elura, New South Wales, it was anticipated that the concentration of impurities, particularly arsenic, in the zinc sulphide concentrates treated at Risdon would increase. This suggested that an increase in the capacity of the iron purification step in the Risdon plant would be required to cope with the higher input of these impurities.Laboratory investigations showed that the additional capacity would be achieved, either by a large increase in the amount of iron used as the "collector" in the process, or by a two-stage process. The latter approach was preferred as a increase in the amount of iron precipitated would lead to much higher operating costs and overloading of the existing equipment.In the two stage procedure, acidic iron bearing solution is added to solution feeding the first stage and most of the arsenic removed from solution when iron is precipitated from solution by neutralisation with limestone. Mter separation of the precipitated solids, acidic iron bearing solution is added to the solution, and remaining arsenic removed almost completely following neutralisation by limestone.This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant results and the plant modifications required. Abrief account is also given of the operator training and acceptance in the use of the digital control facilities installed in the new plant.The new plant is working well and good solution purity is being maintained despite a substantial increase in the concentration of impurities in the raw materials.

The Ok Tedi copper and gold mining project is located in the headwaters of the Fly River system in western Papua New Guinea. The project's Feasibility Study was completed in 1979, and in- cluded a preliminary environmental assessment and an environ- mental management program. Construction commenced in 1981, an environmental impact study was completed in 1982, mining and treatment of gold ore commenced in 1984, staged construction of copper ore processing facilities took place during 1986-1988, and a further major environmental study was carried out for the operat- ing mine during 1986-1989. A very considerable data base of environmental information has been assembled by means of a comprehensive monitoring program. Environmental management criteria applied to the Project have reflected the stages and nature of development and operation. Criteria have been designed to regulate potential environmental impacts in the Fly River. An Acceptable Particulate Level of suspended sediment is the principal criterion. Compliance is con- ditional upon -a limited reduction in fish biomass, and upon dis- solved and particulate copper concentrations not exceeding predicted values at various locations throughout the river system. The criteria were established by the Government of Papua New Guinea following evaluation of environmental studies undertaken by the mining company. Compliance is checked by a detailed monitoring program, frequent reporting and statistical evaluation of monitoring results.

Improvements in technology do not necessarily lead to higher profits: the benefit of lower costs can be captured by coal buyers, governments and workforce rather than by the colliery operators. The economic impact of longwall mining in Australia has been critically assessed to provide lessons for the future. For a variety of reasons, companies investing in longwall equipment in the past five years have generally not achieved an adequate return on the funds invested. The effect of technological innovation must be examined in the light of competitive forces operating in the market. Projections of cost reduction trends in the coal industry have been applied to a world cost model to provide a picture of the coal industry in the year 2000.

THE method of stope surveying as practised at the Mount Lyell Company's mines has been evolved out of the exigencies created by special conditions. It presents some novel features, and has proved effective for all requirements. All stope measurement work is brought under one complete system, to which office methods are standardized. Before proceeding to deal with the subject a brief description of the physical characteristics of the ore-bodies of each mine and the method of stoping will serve to show, cause ,for departure from ordinary survey practice.NORTH LYELL MINEThe ore-bodies of this mine occur on or near the conglomerate schist contact, and, being probably the result of replacements of both rocks, they rarely present any definite walls. It is usual for the payable material to merge into the respective countryrocks, and the limit of the occurrence is defined rather by assay value than by any distinct natural boundaries. The general configuration of these ore-bodies, therefore, is highly erratic both in horizontal and vertical section, so that, in order to obtain an accurate record of any occurrence, the measurement of the actual contour at short vertical intervals is essential.Stoping is carried out on a modification of the "rill." system, perhaps more properly described as "arched back" or "dome" stoping. Mullock rises are placed in as convenient positions as the erratic configuration of each ore-body will allow, and aroundthese rises the back is kept well arched, both longitudinally and transversely. Long Shaft has traditionally been seen as one of the most challenging mines in the Kambalda area with operations having been suspended by the previous owners in 1999. When mining recommenced in October 2002, the current owners (Lightning Nickel) decided that a different approach was required for mining operations in such an aggressive geotechnical environment. This paper describes how Lightning Nickel has successfully and safely operated the Long Shaft complex on a traditional mining approach, which encompasses the key learnings of the previous owners.

The recent advances in digital imaging technology, specifically around photogrammetry, have facilitated precision measurement in the difficult conditions encountered in an underground development mining environment. With the recent downturn in the resources industry, many mining houses have begun to focus on cost reduction projects and driving efficiencies. The application of digital photogrammetry has allowed greater insight into the development mining cycle and supported a focus on areas where efficiencies and cost savings can be achieved. Data collation, via digital image capture, can be completed with minimal disruption to the development mining cycle with analyses taking a nominal time to process and interpret. The result can be a stark visual representation of the result of blasting and associated activities of the development mining cycle. Many millions of dollars of benefit can be derived from understanding the impact of each component of the development mining process, with some of the biggest savings associated with conformance to drill design and the minimisation of overbreak during blasting. This paper will explain the image capture process, analyses and instigated improvement opportunities that were undertaken at a number of mine sites to improve efficiencies and drive savings in their development mining processes.CITATION:Klaric, P, Swart, N and Barnes, S, 2017. In understanding the consequence of existing law, and the likely implications of its reform, it is necessary to comprehend the logic of the situation that the law provides individual decision makers and how that situation would be adjusted by reform. In particular, the way in which natural resources, including minerals, are used and managed is influenced by the definition and structure of property rights that the law provides. Property rights are enforceable claims to use or to benefit from resources. An example is a mining licence that allows its holder to extract minerals in a specified area. Property rights establish the structure of incentives, opportunities and constraints within which resource use decisions are made, ie the logic of the situation, and hence influence the use and management of resources. The extent and type of mining in New Zealand, for example, reflects the rights that miners have to extract minerals, and their rights to benefit from mining as against their duties to compensate landowners and pay royalties. This paper describes the characteristics of minerals that are relevant to the definition of property rights, analyses the implications of alternative property right arrangements and describes the existing situation.

Open pit blasting at Ernest Henry Mining has the potential to cause damage to nearby underground workings. This paper is a case study of the blast vibration management project that was conducted to ensure open pit blasting did not adversely affect the stability of upper production levels or cause damage to the underground primary fan units. The two upper levels of the underground mine surround the lower portion of the open pit mine. The remaining underground mine workings are directly below the open pit mine. This paper details the process developed to prevent open pit blasting causing excess vibration in the underground mine. Measurement of test blasts combined with historic blast monitoring data was used to determine site specific blast vibration parameters. Threshold vibration levels for blast-induced damage to underground drives and the fan chambers were developed from benchmarking and non-linear numerical modelling. A Monte Carlo simulation model was used to predict vibration levels in critical underground areas. Blasts predicted to exceed maximum vibration levels could then be redesigned to avoid damage.A scale distance law for determining peak particle velocity (PPV) from the distance and charge weight of blasts was developed. Underground observations were used to develop a site-specific relationship between PPV and ground support/rock mass damage. A Monte Carlo superposition prediction model was developed and compared to measured data to refine input parameters. Standards for redesigning open pit blasts in order to reduce blast vibrations whilst minimising impacts on productivity are described. Non-linear numerical modelling was used to establish the dynamic capacity of the fan chambers, and set a PPV of 250 mm/s as a threshold for damage. The numerical model captured the full dynamic behaviour of the fan chambers and installed support, including transient stresses, strains and induced damage, when subjected to a simulated open pit blast.This case study also outlines a procedure for monitoring and predicting blast vibrations at other mine sites where open pit blasting has the potential to impact on a nearby underground mine.

Legislative change has reformed the licensing process in Victoria. The Mineral Resources Development Act 1990 and the two stage system of licensing with the authority to commence work is discussed. A key part is the requirements of planning consent, being either an Environmental Effects Statement or the issue of a Planning Permit prior to the issue of an authority to commence work for mineral extraction. Examples of recent experience is discussed.

Steelmakers are increasingly motivated to use iron ore resources with a wider range of grades and mineral types that were previously considered unsuitable or uneconomical for sintering. In this respect, specific issues, which now require further investigation and understanding, include the sintering of ore types with:- overall higher gangue content- elements that cause problems in the steel manufacturing operations- distinctive sintering performance compared with traditional hematite-rich iron ores. Laboratory-based investigations of the sintering performance and the behaviour of gangue impurities during sintering is an important step towards the successful utilisation of these resources in steelmaking.In terms of laboratory-based sintering investigations, there are two generally accepted experimental scales utilised prior to undertaking industrial-scale trials, which include: bench-scale tablet (compact) testing and pilot-scale pot testing. The former has the advantages of flexibility and more precise control of sintering conditions; but it is difficult to simulate the heterogeneity of a sinter bed. The latter, which is carried out in pots with diameters between 150–500 mm, simulate the commercial sintering process and conditions quite well, but is time-consuming and labour-intensive due to operational complexity. It is therefore desirable to establish a smaller scale pot testing facility that avoids the disadvantages of the normal sintering pot but can provide comparable information.To explore the feasibility of small-scale pot testing, a ‘millipot’ facility was established to examine the sintering performance of iron ores and other non-traditional ferrous materials. The millipot has a diameter of 53 mm and height of 400 mm. The facility has the capability to monitor the sintering temperature at a number of locations (axial, radial) within the sinter bed and to adjust the suction (‘windbox’) pressure. In open cut gold mining at Mt Magnet and Reedy, grade control sampling is done with inclined RC drilling using one metre samples. In the small open cuts at Rothsay blasthole sampling was successfully used. Underground sampling for gold and copper grades at Rothsay is done using chip sampling. At the Youanmi open pits both Ditchwitch Earthsawing and RC drilling are used.All assay data are interpreted on sections and plans using a customised SURPAC system. Reconciliations of the grade control predictions of tonnes and grade against initial ore reserves, mining production and milling results are carried out monthly.

Applications of chlorine metallurgy to the extraction of metals often result in the production of volatile metallic chlorides, most of which condense directly to a solid phase at 1 atm pressure. A stirred-bed condenser suitable for the recovery of these materials is described.The unit, developed from the concept of a fluid bed condenser, has the advantages of versatility of operation and ability to control fog and dust formation. Test work using aluminium chloride vapour (as an example of a volatile chloride) gave recoveries approaching 100 per cent. The yield was dependent upon halide content of the vapour, flowrate, and, to a lesser extent, upon coolant temperature. Analysis of the heat transfer dataindicated condensation side coefficients in the range 10 to 30 B.T.U./hr sq. ft. 0p.

The development and operation of three large open cut brown coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, requires a wide range of drilling techniques for coal resource evaluation and stratigraphic defi- nition, material property identification, open cut dewatering, and instal- lation of groundwater monitoring bores. This paper describes in detail the range of drilling techniques, equip- ment used and associated problems with drilling, in a deep sedimentary basin containing several major brown coal seams, multiple aquifer sys- tems of varying pressures and thin layers of hard materials including pyrite, siderite and basalt. Methods of rotary drilling include wireline core drilling, conventional core drilling, conventional flush drilling, diamond core drilling, reverse circulation air lift drilling and bucket auger drilling. Cable tool drilling is also used for strata definition and aquifer sampling.

Most types of nuclear power reactors use uranium dioxide fuel. Power reactors using natural uranium dioxide fuel are of special interest to countries such as Australia that have their own uranium supplies. A wide range of uranium dioxide powders can be fabricated and the ideal one flows readily, presses without the need for binders or lubricants, sinters to the required density and gives low reject rates at all fabrication stages. Sinterable uranium dioxide is usually produced via the ammonium diuranate route.The Australian Atomic Energy Commission is aiming to demonstrate production of nuclear grade uranium dioxide from Australian concentrates, improving technology where possible. Details are given of the dissolution, solvent extraction, precipitation, filtration, drying, and· calcination-reduction steps. Solvent extraction from sulphate media is also under study with a view to developing a process to produce a nuclear grade product at the mine treatment plant site.

In October 1993 it was decided to undertake the fourth phase of mining at Big Bell. This decision followed the exhaustion of open pit reserves in January 1993. Two stages of mining were proposed for the new underground mine. The initial stage would mine the remnant ore, consisting of the rib and crown pillars and lower grade ore on the hangingwall and footwall side of the old open stopes, which were mined from the 1930s to 1950s. Most of the old open stopes were backfilled with either deslimed mill tailings or development mullock, both of which were economic to recover. However, the mineable ore from this resource was difficult to evaluate. The second stage focused on mining ore outside the remnant areas and was initially proposed as a Core and Shell method under a caving hangingwall. This method has since been superseded with sublevel caving, in part due to the very high and deviatoric stress conditions encountered at Big Bell and the relatively long mining cycle required for open stoping. The problems and challenges discussed in this paper will cover the identification of remnant ore reserves, dewatering the old workings, and remnant mining.

Golden Pig mine is in the central part of the Southern Cross greenstone belt within the Archaean Yilgarn craton. The mine has produced approximately 2.5 Mt of ore at 5.7 g/t Au to yield approximately 450 000 oz. The majority of gold mineralisation is hosted within extensively deformed and quartz-veined BIFÆs. In addition to the BIF-hosted mineralisation, an increasingly important part of the resource lies in the Taurus Lode, which is a N-NNW-trending amphibolite facies shear zone. The Taurus Lode lies within a continuous shear-zone that has a moderate to steeply WSW dipping foliation, and a mineral lineation of biotite, amphibole and pyrrhotite plunging consistently 10¦ S. Drive faces, subperpendicular to the foliation and lineation, consistently show evidence for syn-mineralisation reverse shear. Exposures parallel to the mineral lineation and perpendicular to the foliation reveal both sinistral and dextral asymmetries. These characteristics suggest that the vorticity axis of the Taurus Shear Zone is parallel to the mineral lineation, and that the simple shear sense is reverse. This geometry can arise when there is a major component of flattening across the shear zone, which may be due to interference between two adjacent granite domes. The BIF-hosted lodes plunge consistently 15¦ NNW coincident with the intersection of the axial planar cleavage of the regional folds and the Taurus Shear Zone. However, where the penetrative shear characteristics control the orientation and geometry of the mineralisation, oreshoots plunge SSW, parallel to the stretching and mineral lineations within the shear. The SSW plunge of strike extensive and laterally confined high-grade, economic ore shoots within the Taurus shear is fundamental to defining the economic mineralisation within this lode. Identifying the zones of maximum continuity and establishing the optimal position for future development will maximise ore extraction.

The countercurrent gas-solid heat transfer during the drying of brown coal briquettes in the pilot carbonization plant at Morwell has been analysed and theoretical gas and solid temperature distributions through the drier have been calculated. Although the calculations rest on several simplifying assumptions, the theoretical temperature distributions compare well with those observed in practical operation. Valuable conclusions are reached as to the effects of changes in drier operating conditions on the rate of drying of the briquettes which controls the strength of the char produced. The analysis shows why a limitation was reached in the improvement of char strength in the pilot plant in 1961 due to the performance of the drier and a prediction is made of a way in which the limitation could be overcome.

This iron ore mine site, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, commenced operations in 1998, with ore derived by mining of open-cut pits in Channel Iron Deposits (CIDs). A portion of the ore extracted at the mine is processed at wet processing plants that produce both ore saleable product and waste fines (i.e. tailings) slurry. The waste fines produced at the wet plants are presently stored within Waste Fines Cells (WFCs).Waste fines cells A (WFCA) and B (WFCB) are located within an Autonomous Haul System (AHS) area and consist of embankments that span the width of the pit in east-west alignments. Technical studies and design analyses were carried out to support embankment raises and ongoing development of the WFCs. During operation and development of the WFCs, a multitude of simultaneous activities took place to the immediate north and south of WFCA respectively. These activities included the construction of the embankment raises using the AHS fleet, mining of the CID to not only mine the ore but to also create future deposition space for WFCB, blasting next to the WFC embankments as part of the mining activities, seepage collection and dewatering of the pit in the vicinity of the WFC.This paper discusses the material characteristics, design approach, construction staging and equipment requirements, blasting near embankments, water management, facility consequence category and closure concept.CITATION:Boshoff, J J, 2018. Someone once said "Leadership is the ability to inflict pain and get away with it." The same can be said about successful management of equipment suppliers. Improved performance will not be achieved without some pain, but it should be evenly spread between both parties. In practically all mining situations there is a great deal of scope for improving performance and reducing maintenance costs on an extremely wide range of plant, but it requires co-operative effort. Most mine maintenance engineers attribute the main problems to the equipment suppliers, unsuitable designs, lack of spares, untrained servicemen, lack of standardisation, poor maintenance manuals, and so on. Conversely the suppliers' engineers are usually convinced that problems with their product are exclusively due to poor maintenance management, after all they never have the same problem elsewhere. Of course both are correct to some degree. My aim in this paper is to explore the opportunities for substituting collaboration for confrontation between the engineers of the mining and supplying companies. I will also propose that contrary to common belief, the mines rather than the suppliers, should be taking the management initiative needed to achieve a closer and more effective relationship, Many would argue that this initiative should remain solely with the supplier; after
