Many of the large refrigeration plants used in, the cooling systems on deep South African gold mines are situated on surface where they are exposed to seasonally and diurnally varying climatic conditions, and to a diurnally varying demand for cooling made by the mine. It has been traditional to accommodate the seasonal variation in climate by manual control applied to the plants at appropriate times of the year, and the plants have normally been specified to conform passively to the diurnal variations. This paper introduces new strategies for the active automatic control of the plants on a diurnal cycle, and shows that attractive benefits in energy and chilled water resource management can be accrued through the use of these strategies. The results have been derived through the modelling and simulation of a representative refrigeration plant.

Mathematical modelling was carried out to determine the probable convergence and vertical stress patterns around a retreating longwall panel in an underground coal mine in New South Wales. An 'Electrical Resistance Analogue' and a program called 'THREED' based on the displacement discontinuity method were used for the modelling. Parts of the obtained results are presented here and compared with some measurements of convergence at the site. The modelled and measured data agree better qualitatively, than quantitatively.

The Mount Charlotte grinding circuit at KCGMÆs Fimiston mill was recently equipped with three 650 mm CAVEX cyclones in order to improve the overflow P80, reduce the fines bypass to the underflow and improve the underflow density/recovery of water to the overflow. After the first two sets of surveys were conducted air core boosters (ACBs) were installed on the 650 mm CAVEX cyclones in an attempt to further increase their performance. JKTech was approached to assist with the examination of the data obtained from the surveys; this data was intensively modelled to determine, to a high degree of confidence, the impact the changes to the cyclones had on the classification and the benefits to the plant. This paper outlines the outcomes of the trial and the methods used to determine those outcomes.

Since 1978, the nickel concentrator at Leinster has been subject to continuous change. In 1971 a significant nickel sulphide deposit was discovered on Leinster Downs Station, within three years the extent of the deposit was determined. In 1978 the Agnew Mining Company began production of nickel concentrate from the Perseverance Mine and continued to do so until production ceased in 1986. In 1988 WMC purchased the mothballed project and began the first phase of many expansion initiatives. Milestones in the life of Leinster have included:open cut mining of the Perseverance orebody and the discovery of the RockyÆs Reward orebody, as well as the metallurgical challenges in treating each of these; underground mining at both Perseverance and RockyÆs Reward; construction and commissioning of the WMC grinding and flotation circuits; variations in the reagent schemes, including the introduction of æliquidÆ reagents; development of mill linings to reduce maintenance; circuit re-configuration and simplification; development of Harmony open cut; strategies for increasing throughput at the drier; and changes to tailings facilities to cope with increased throughput. This paper outlines the steps which have been required to expand the Leinster Nickel Concentrator from 650 000 tpa to 2.5 Mtpa and those steps which will be required in the future.

The Kendenggaoer-Kuokuqueke region lies in the western part of Chinese North-western Tianshan. New laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry zircon U-Pb geochronology for five separate granitic plutons for this region reveal two distinct intrusive periods: late Devonian (367~361 Ma) and late Carboniferous (315~301 Ma). These intrusions all share an arc-like geochemical affinity (ie enrichment of large ion lithosphere elements and negative anomalies of Nb, Ta and Ti). In situ zircon Hf isotopic compositions further differentiate the magmatic cycle, with the late Devonian intrusions yielding more depleted eHf(t) (+1.47~+6.54) composition than the late Carboniferous intrusions (eHf(t) = +4.95~+9.79). These geochemical data suggest that they might be mainly derived from different source regions and the tectonic setting was transformed into post-collisional in the late Carboniferous. As in many significant porphyry-ore districts, this dramatic tectonic reconfiguration, combined with melting of an evolved crust, resulted in genesis of metal-bearing melts. Furthermore, we can show that Neoproterozoic mafic juvenile lower crust intruded by mantle-derived melts and/or partial melting of slab material generated hybrid primary magma during subduction of the Palaeo-Junggar oceanic crust in the late Devonian. High speed diamond cutting has extensive applications in civil and mining engineering. A project involving the diamond sawing of black granite is investigating the nature of the diamond cutting process. A sawing machine was devised to adjust the cutting load and measure cutting speed. Cuttings were collected for size distribution analysis. The surface produced by interaction between diamond. grits and the rock was subjected to microscopic investigation. Increasing load prompts the proportional increase in the cutting rate. But the mean size of cuttings shows little change. The photomicrographs of the cutting tracks indicate neither patterns of crack formation nor signs of the ductile behaviour of the rock. A diamond cutting model for hard rock is formulated on these observations. Diamond cutting is a process of surface failure, which advances in four stages. The polycrystalline characteristics of a hard rock and the action of high-speed diamond grits guarantee the creation of crack nuclei which develop into cracks in various directions. This network crisscrossing cracks enable the stripping of this surface layer from the rock.

This paper discusses support requirements for the proposed monorail system to be used in decline development. The monorail drilling and loading systems are systems that move on the rail (monorail) installed in the roof of the decline and supported by roof bolts, suspension chains and steel supports. However, due to the weight of the components of the two systems, it is imperative that the force in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support capable of suspending the weight of the heaviest component is determined. Numerical models that relate the weight of the monorail drilling and loading components to the required strength in the support system have been developed. Using these developed models, numerical values of the forces in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support, required to suspend the weight of the heaviest component of the monorail drilling and loading systems are determined.

In backfill grouting for underground coalmines, the filling materials strengthen the caving rock and support the overlying strata to reduce surface subsidence. The broken roof strata fail and collapse during mining operations without appropriate supporting measures being taken. It is difficult to perform continuous backfill mining on the working face of such roofs using the existing mining technology. Therefore, in order to solve the above problems, fly ash and mine water are considered as filling materials, and flow characteristics of fly-ash slurry are investigated through laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses. Laws governing the diffusion of fly-ash slurry in the void of caving rock masses and in the void between a caving rock mass and a basic roof are obtained and verified. Based on the results obtained from the above analyses and field conditions at the Zhaoguan coalmine, Shandong Province, China, a cave backfill grouting system of the hauling pipeline is developed and successfully tested at the 1703 working face. The results demonstrate that a filling rate of 43.46 per cent is achieved, and the surface subsidence coefficient of the grouting process is found to be 0.475. Compared to the total caving method, the proposed system is found to achieve a reduction rate of 40.63 per cent. This effectively helps in lowering the value of the surface subsidence coefficient. Fly ash and mine water, considered as primary materials in this study, also play a significant role in improving the air quality and water environment.

The simultaneous presence of fuel, oxygen, and of an ignition source is necessary for an explosion to arise. If one of these conditions is missing an explosion cannot take place. A continuous reduction of oxygen, often applied as a protective measure in surface plants, is not to be considered for underground mining because of possible danger to persons. Therefore, measures for avoiding explosions can only be concerned with lowering methane and coal-dust concentrations to an undangerous level and avoiding ignition sources. As these measures alone are not sufficient, additional ones have to be taken to keep the effect of an explosion as low as possible. Measures for controlling and monitoring methane are essential. Although the formation of dangerous coal dust concentration cannot be avoided it can be reduced. Dust-binding by means of hygroscopic pastes and dusting with limestone dust are effective measures to pre vent explosions.

This project evaluated the performance of nine passive treatment methods by studying 137 treatment units in eight eastern states. Performance was normalised according to construction cost, projected service life and kilograms of acid load treated. Results were dimensioned as $/kg of acid load treated/year. These costs were then compared to those of chemical treatment. Sites that achieved acid load reductions at costs below those of chemical treatment were considered successful. In addition to evaluating the performance of the treatment methods, this paper describes the various passive treatment systems, their applications and performance data for individual treatment units.

The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit occurs in pervasively altered andesite of the Waipupu Formation and in the Waiharakeke Dacite. The unaltered, post-mineral Whakamoehau Andesite overlies these units. The Empire zone of the Golden Cross deposit contains a stockwork which is currently mined by open pit methods, and a series of veins that are mined underground. Alteration envelops both the underground and open pit mineralisation. The core of the alteration zone contains silicification, as quartz veins, and adularia. Shallow portions of the system contain illite-smectite and a thermally unstable chlorite, tentatively identified as corrensite, which pass downward into illite and chlorite, respectively. Replacement calcite occurs widely throughout the altered zone; pyrite is nearly ubiquitous. This alteration assemblage indicates formation from near-neutral alkali chloride waters. A late, post-mineralisation alteration assemblage of calcite, smectite, illitesmectite, kaolinite and siderite presumably formed from weakly acidic, steam-heated CO2-rich waters.   We have identified eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren.

The location of seismic events in mines is traditionally calculated based on the arrival times of P- and S-waves for a given velocity model (homogeneous or heterogeneous). This technique is successful when the sources of seismic events are sudden and localised (eg episodes of fracturing in solid rock or dynamic slip along a plane of weakness) and thus the radiated seismic waves have clear arrivals. In massive mining operations such as block caves, strong seismic signals often originate from the movement of loose rocks on the perimeter of the fracture zone. These signals are easily recordable but do not contain easily identifiable direct P- and S-waves, making the estimation of location through traditional methods more complicated. This problem has been approached by using a ‘brightness’ location method that estimates the origin of seismic waves based on travel times of envelopes of seismic energy. This tool is extended to be applicable in a heterogeneous velocity environment that now accounts for the presence of a cave or other strong velocity perturbations. Block modelling is a well-established method for modelling ore reserves as a basis for strategic mine planning and mine development. Off-Earth mining, particularly of asteroids, can benefit from block models; however, the significantly different characteristics of asteroids and their methods of mining require reconsideration of the geometry and annotations of block models. Terrestrial block models consist of rectangular prisms within Euclidean coordinate systems. Their labels and parameters typically include location within a mine-specific coordinate system, x, y and z dimensions, specific gravity, hardness, grades of metals of interest and so on.These data provide an input to mine design and strategic mine planning. Mining asteroids may require different coordinate systems (eg spherical, elliptical or cylindrical, rather that Euclidean) and attributes that vary from Earth-based block models. These include: variable gravitational vectors throughout the block modelrotational moment or accelerationrotation rates. Materials within asteroids may show different isotopic compositions. Asteroid mining has the unique characteristic of a mine being identical with an asteroid. The position of the asteroid/mine in space and its full orbital elements provide critical inputs to mission design and costing. Hence, the block model concept needs to be extended with this metadata. The orbital position and behaviour of the Earth must be included for active mine planning, and increasing automation of mine planning and operations needs to consider terrestrial weather and telecommunications infrastructure. Financial planning requires analysis of the net present value of extraterrestrial mining compared with terrestrial alternatives, so a fully automated mining enterprise should integrate terrestrial and extraterrestrial block models at different scales and resolutions. The Mining Act (1992) and the Petroleum Act (1980) provide for the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to take up equity holdings in mining and petroleum projects. The price the Government pays for its share is based on the historical cost of exploration and development on the project to the date of government equity acquisition. The equity level to be acquired is not fixed and ranges up to 30o for mining and up to 22.5s for petroleum at the discretion of the Government of the time.The objective of this paper is to examine the pros and cons of State equity holdings in PNG from the point of view of both the State and the developer. Using an economic model of the PNG mining taxation system an assessment is made of the effective return on investment received by the State from such equity holdings. The results are compared with government revenues from other taxation measures.

The paper reviews developments in general galvanising in Australia, including a brief history of the industry and its technology. The changes in galvanising process technology are covered, as well as developments in galvanising bath design, materials handling and pre-treatment. Developments in zinc management through the use of aluminium and nickel alloys are discussed. The paper addresses the cost components of general galvanising and relates this to the competitive position of general galvanising against other coatings used for protecting steel. The environmental aspects of the general galvanising industry in Australia are outlined with respect to the utilisation of process chemicals, problems associated with their disposal and developments in filtering and regeneration of process solutions. The current status of the industry is assessed in terms of zinc usage and usage trends. Likely changes in technology which may impact on the general galvanising industry in the future are reviewed.

Laboratory scale equipment was developed to recover zinc as oxide fume from granulated lead blast furnace slag. The cyclone furnace process is characterised by high treatment rates combined with continuous and independent operation.Results were sufficiently encouraging to warrant pilot plant scale trials being undertaken.INTRODUCTIONSince granulation of lead blast furnace slag started at Port Pirie in 1921 the stockpile of this material has increased to nearly 5 million tons which averages 17·5 per cent zinc by weight. Although a number of processes for recovering the zinc have been examined, economic considerations indicate that a slag fuming process is likely to be most suitable.In the conventional slag fuming process zinc is extracted by injecting pulverized coal and air into a molten slag bath. By maintaining a suitable air to coal ratio the oxidised zinc contained in the slag is reduced to metal. Volatilization of the zinc is followed by reoxidation in the gaseous phase with the addition of further air above the bath. The zinc oxide fume so produced is collected by normal gas cleaning methods.By examination of the thermodynamics of this process Bell, Turner, and Peters (1955) determined the zinc oxide activity of the slag over the duration of the fuming cycle.A combination of high temperature and high carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide ratio was found necessary for rapid zinc elimination.Since melting of the slag is an essential step in the slag fuming process, only two treatment methods appeared possible at Port Pirie until recently...

This paper presents a review of heat illness in mining, including reference to several recent investigations by the author. Heat illness is a collective term, covering the conditions of heat stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps and miliaria rubra. Heat stroke is life-threatening and is by far the most serious condition. It is rare in mining, if appropriate control measures are instituted. Heat exhaustion is primarily due to hypohydration, following prolonged sweating in hot conditions. Symptoms include fatigue, headaches, dizziness, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, or brief syncope. Confusion, ataxia, prolonged unconsciousness or convulsions are strongly suggestive of heat stroke. Heat cramps are painful involuntary contractions of skeletal muscle associated with work in hot conditions. The limbs are usually involved and the spasms typically last a few minutes, during which the affected part of the body is incapacitated. Heat cramps tend to occur in heat exhaustion, when hypohydration becomes marked. Miliaria rubra is a skin rash caused by extravasation of sweat into the skin, as a result of obstruction of the sweat glands. It occurs after prolonged and profuse sweating in hot environments. It can take three to four weeks of sedentary duties, in an air-conditioned surface environment, for the condition to resolve. Heat illness would be unlikely in underground mining, if the thermal environment was sufficiently well controlled by ventilation and refrigeration. This is however, often not practicable. Where engineering controls alone cannot provide sufficient control of risk, the residual risk can be assessed using an appropriate heat stress index. While procedural controls may further reduce the residual risk, it is important to remember that these are less reliable than engineering controls and cases of heat illness may still occur. Procedural controls include the application of heat stress limits, education, hydration, self-pacing, early symptom reporting, medical advice, acclimatisation procedures, air conditioned accommodation, support to achieve a healthy body mass index, and an effective emergency response capacity.
